Big Bad Bob 1/7/2014 2:11:44 AM Report

Good morning everyone,
We all have our hobby horses, I suppose. In keeping with one of mine, I would like to mention an article I enjoyed reading in the French press (in only one newspaper, that is, given the Worlds pervading atmosphere of political correctness whereby calling a spade a spade is tantamount to blasphemy.)
The Saudi Arabian government and wealthy private donors from that country wanted to finance the building of mosques in Norway to the tune of tens of millions of Euros. In accordance with Norwegian Law, it is permissible for foreign countries to support religious communities financially, but when very large amounts are involved, the Government must give its approval. Well, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not only refused to approve such financing, it also replied to an Islamic Centre in Norway that it would be Paradoxical and contrary to nature to accept such a donation coming from a country that does not accept religious freedom.
The Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister declared to the Norwegian Newspaper VG:
We could have simply said no, the Ministry does not approve. But we took advantage of the occasion to add that approval would be paradoxical as long as any wish to establish a Christian community in Saudi Arabia would be considered a crime in that country.

As indicated in Shakespeares play Hamlet, this is called hoisting somebody on his own petard. A cynic might say that the Saudis chose the wrong little country to try to buy off, because Norway has substantial North Sea oil resources of its own. To Hell with political correctness then and long live the Viking spirit!

soo would the NDP or Liberals handle it any different?
Just wondering!
Bobby Nerves 1/7/2014 7:11:03 AM Report

While I applaud the Norwegian decision and response, I'm also grateful of being part of a part of humanity where I can say a prayer and carry a religious symbol without fear of being punished for it and I say it in a reasonable way and without offending others people beliefs or superstitions.

This for now, therefore, enjoy it while it last.

Lately, Mr. Ovander Holyfield found himself in hot water for his religious opinions, but the press, as usual manipulating the information, reported that Mr. Holyfield found himself in hot water for his view on homosexuality and lesbianism.

Talking politically correctness.

That's an old story... (2009-2010 ?)

Norway has an ethnic purity thread that runs through them so this didn't surprise me.

You need only listen to Anders Breivik's manifesto regarding his slaughter of 77 young people in Oslo and Utoya island last year to understand. For murdering 77 people in his Islamophobic rage, he received a grand total of 21 YEARS in prison.

Not so fast there cowboy. (not that you are Jim said, the article is three years old....) It depends what spade you call a spade. While I agree with the Norwegian stand , political correctness has it's legitimate place! "Dumb talk" should be confronted and questioned.
As far as "blasphemy" goes, well, it's as redundant as the definition of it.

Good morning everyone. Is it just me or do the neo-cons seems to be getting testier these days with Steve's fortunes falling in the dumpster. Mallet obviously Chretien (Canadian Government) got screwed on those subs but everything is relative. Harper paid more for the design of his new ship than those four subs cost so who is the worst Prime Minister? Be careful Mallet you are starting to appear associated with brain trusts like Wisen, Steelworker and Learning and I know you are far brighter than that. Have a great day all.

Whether the Saudi Arabia / Norway story is new or old, I read it in the French press only two days ago. My opinion nevertheless remains the same. In my view there are similarities amongst Political Correctness, Nazism and Communism; i.e. a bunch of intolerant sexual intellectuals ( know-it-alls) who believe that they alone possess all the answers to everything and that nobody else is entitled to any opinion but theirs on any subject.

flyhawk25 1/7/2014 9:15:17 AM Report

The point was made yesterday that the local Tories picked Hayes as a replacement for our late mayor. I agree.
Lost in that are two points.
The first is that the other parties picked candidates who were weak and almost just mailed in a Conservative victory. The second is that John Rowswell had all the requisite traits of a good MP - experience, a passion for this area and a track record on a larger stage.
I still might not have voted for him because of Harper but ask yourself this - how much better would Mayor John have done than Hayes?
We got a third stringer and are paying the price.
Wisenheimer 1/7/2014 9:16:48 AM Report

According to Mort Zuckerman the "best politician of 2013". Ta Da .. "Stephen Harper, Canadian P.M." for keeping Canada'a economy strong, even as their biggest trading partner continues to flounder. Cites the E.U. trade deal as one of his biggest accomplishments.
Grump ... take a few deep breaths. Then call 911.

Wisenheimer 1/7/2014 9:25:43 AM Report

John Rowswell was vilified by lefties on council, and on here, for his views and his attempts to reach out to the rest of the world for business opportunities. He was told to stay home and mind the store, and stop those high highfalutin ideas.

Just getting back to you....

Harper signed the tentative deal in Brussels on Oct. 18 alongside European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso. The agreement still needs to be fine-tuned and full ratification most likely won't happen for another two years.

Signed is signed....
flyhawk25 1/7/2014 9:42:51 AM Report

I see the Harper apologists are lining up. Peachy.
To respond to the 'lefty' generalization about Rowswell - I thought he was a bumbling goof when he was first elected. But over the years I thought he grew and matured and did some very good things.
As for cities of similar size blah, blah.
It is not my job nor my wont to compare cities of our size, demographics and elected members to compare to us.
That is a narrow reference that ignores political realities. Not that I'd expect the nit picking neo-cons to understand that.
Everything north and west of Barrie in Ontario must be considered as one large pot of electors who are currently languishing under both the feds and the province.Simply stated we just aren't worth the effort or expense to court.
I believed John Rowswell could develop a coalition of those areas with his bigger vision.
As a stand-alone area we will never get in on the gravy train.
Jimssm 1/7/2014 9:49:33 AM Report

If you're talking about the Mclaughlin Group... Mort gave Harper an 'honourable mention', not Politician of the Year.

He gave Politician of the year to Hillary Clinton.

"MR. ZUCKERMAN: Hillary Clinton, who kept herself out of the dispute of "Obamacare," and therefore preserved all that she needs for the next presidential campaign."

Nice try though.

An opinion.
It is based on a wish list to avoid the inevitable desire by Canadians to restore balance and integrity to our country.
I have no idea if either opposition party's leader can succeed but my opinion is that the 'average Canadian' is fed up with government that they see as out of touch with all but special interest groups.
If it takes 'a newby' just remember - you elected one here federally. I think that turned out badly but neither Trudeau nor Mulcair is as limited as Hayes.

Mr. Poster 1/7/2014 11:03:53 AM Report

It seems in every election it gets tougher and tougher to find quality candidates willing to put themselves out there. Perhaps they are really turned off by folks who look for things to be critical of. Not every candidate is a good fit but the people speak by voting. I can see why possible contenders are tuned off. they are expected to solve all local issues in the first term...brig jobs that are not available anywhere to SSm....give up their family life...give up a good job....spend days away from home...for what? Even that super pension is not enough to drag many into "the race".
right wing 1/7/2014 11:04:18 AM Report

This is the reason the term man driven global warming was changed to "Climate Change".
It definitely covers it all and I guess when a group is trying to desperately prop up a failed theory everything thrown into the mix works.
Perhaps they can explain the warming trend to the Russians.....

Russia is enduring its harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures plunging as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Dozens of people have already died, and almost 150 have been hospitalized.

The country has not witnessed such a long cold spell since 1938, meteorologists said, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia.

Across the country, 45 people have died due to the cold, and 266 have been taken to hospitals. In total, 542 people were injured due to the freezing temperatures, RIA Novosti reported.

The Moscow region saw temperatures of -17 to -18 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, and the record cold temperatures are expected to linger for at least three more days. Thermometers in Siberia touched -50 degrees Celsius, which is also abnormal for December.
Jimssm 1/7/2014 11:06:53 AM Report

Unlike you, I don't think Canadians are stupid. Many won't bother reading it. Some will. The point is, it should be available for those that want, OR NEED, to know what the government has negotiated ON OUR BEHALF.

Watching the year end interview with Mitt Romney, I'm sure there is a lot of buyer's remorse, going on to the south of us.
A classy gentleman with business acumen and experience. Something the U.S. has sorely lacked over the past 5 years.
While the stock market has soared the job market has languished. A real president would have brought in the entities that have done well with the fed's policies, and encouraged them to get the show on the road. The punting of the Keystone XL pipeline is a classic example of what a rookie Obama is. He would rather have 26 year old males at home covered under Mommy and Daddies health plan, that getting their butts to N.Dakota and pick up a truck driving job for $90,000.00 to start. 3 more years of this and then Hillary. So, have kinda formulated an answer to my own question about politics yesterday. Grump was the only one to respond to me, so where does that leave the rest of you on how you decide who to vote for.
Based on his performance and not even knowing what party he was or would have been affiliated with, my vote would have gone to John Roswell, he was no different from others in that he also had a big ego and far too often thought his way was the only way. BUT, the big difference, was that he was PASSIONATE about the city of Sault Ste. Marie and the constituents. Hands down, he cared more about us and the Soo, more than any other politician since John Rhodes, Russ Ramsay, Ron Irwn, etc.

Also, Mr Roswell had a very solid record of achievement, both in his business life, as well as in the political arena for the Sault.

IMHO, every person who runs for any political office, should have to post their resumes on a public site, for all the public to see, as part of running.

Just like they are applying for a job.

This way, the public can get to see, and consider it as part of their voting process if they wish, and distinguish between those that "talk", and those that actually "achieve". Politics, especially on the left, draws a lot of fancy "talkers", who have a pretty slim resume on actually "doing" or achieving.
People that vote left, don't seem to care, they'll fall for the "talkers" over achievers anyday, which is why the left-leaning parties attract more "talkers" than achievers.

Perspective is an interesting thing.
Obama has a legal healthcare plan with a flawed system of delivery. It is being fixed but slowly.

Harper has a free trade deal that he has signed but is still two years from ratification.I don't remember him asking for our pre-approval or a yes vote from parliament.Nor do I remember it being debated in Ottawa.
But - Obama is bad and Harper is good?
I suppose it depends on your perspective.
From my perspective it appears our leader has one foot in the dictator bucket.

Making it easier for trade items to go in and out of a country yes, but not the jobs that produce them. I would like to see the draft CETA agreement, written in language that anyone can understand rather than the legalese so preferred by governments and companies. Just as the NAFTA agreement, who, other than a lawyer could understand what that was all about, free trade, does not make for free at the border when you pay taxes on it in the country of origin and then have the taxes of this country added on...Like I have said in the past, Free for WHOM..

John was taken too early but had he survived I can see him loosing stomach with Harper and walking across the house in fairly short order. John was a Conservative but he sure as hell wasn't a rose coloured glasses neo-con who would buy into Harper signing a deal, saying trust me when he is the only one who knows what's in it or what isn't. That said isn't Harper the same hero who promised open government when he was running the Liberals down.
flyhawk25 1/7/2014 3:00:19 PM Report

I'm still not convinced Harper has the backbone to stick in for one more election.I hope I'm wrong and he gets his butt handed to him.
But if not him some other Campbell or Eves or a replacement.
His 'best before' date has expired.
A guy like Mulcair will barbecue him in a live debate.
right wing 1/7/2014 3:01:34 PM Report

Doesn't this sound familiar...all the "disaster" predictions that came with the last free trade agreement....once again much-a-do-about-nothing.

...and if was anybody but Harper that had done this deal it would be the best thing since sliced bread according to our bongo playing lefties.

...yes Harper should have consulted with all Canadians like Trudeau did and Chretien did....LMFAO.

Hey Jimssm

Here is some reading for you.

Check out the fact and myth section.
I your world it will all be suspect due to Harper's involvement.

You are welcome.
Jimssm 1/7/2014 3:16:34 PM Report

rw...nice try

I already read that one (the SUMMARY) ... in October.

Where's the actual document ? All I see is a sales brochure from the government.

And by the way, we ALL had access to NAFTA before it was ratified.

Go back to Googling to try to find it... maybe call Bryan's office like I did... he still hasn't got back to me.
Jimssm 1/7/2014 3:18:05 PM Report

For all of you crowing about the fabulous Canadian economy compared to the USA....

Easy guys.
All this piling on of right wing while he's laughing his backside off might result in him calling his pal Hayes for help.On their secret decoder rings...because he apparently does not chat off the cuff without a script.

Here's their email address....

So, you pro-CETA cheerleaders.... time to put up or shut up... email the CETA people and ask for a copy of the current draft as SIGNED by our PM. See how far you get.
flyhawk25 1/7/2014 3:29:59 PM Report

Jimssm...stop it!
You're killing them with facts. And calling them on it.
Let them revel in their rants while they can.
On the other hand - don't stop. I'm laughing my ass off.
right wing 1/7/2014 3:39:17 PM Report

Exactly Jim....before it was ratified.
Thus far CETA is a signed preliminary copy and the details are several years from being finalized but like a true pinko lefty you will bitch about anything that has Harper's name on it...plain, simple and so transparent of you.
I know that when the final copy is ready you will get one and read it, right! a pigs eye.
Yes how stupid of Harper to open the doors of half the worlds economy to Canada.
Like I's a good thing the Conservatives have a majority and will retain one in 2015.
shakespeare 1/7/2014 3:43:10 PM Report

Guess which one is rw!
right wing 1/7/2014 3:43:57 PM Report

Yes stop killing us with facts.

Fact: Harper and conservatives have a majority.

Fact: Canada is doing great in the world economy.

Fact: Harper has started the wheels on the CETA agreement.

Fact: It will be a great economic boost to Canada.

Fact: The lefties can hate it all they want but can do squat about it.

Fact: All of the above is great!

It's interesting that these evaluations are based on portions of CETA leaked from some member nations of the EU, NOT from the Canadian government, who has stubbornly refused to release any portion of the document other than the Actionplan summary.

I believe that the European Union said that Canada could have got a better deal
had their Negotiators done a better job.

Wow ! That is tantamount to saying that the European Union got the best of the deal with Canada.
Talk about calling it like it is !

I believe that Harper was so anxious to do something spectacular that he signed a Tentative deal that was better for the E.U. than for Canada.

Wait and see what he gives to Quebec to compensate them for their losses in the Can.-E.U. Deal.
BIG BROTHER 1/7/2014 5:56:45 PM Report

I agree with you on that. Harper was up to his neck in a scandal and was desperate to appear as if it was 'business as usual'. He was not well equipped to be signing major deals with other countries, as he didn't have the trust of Parliament or the People, at the time of negotiating.

I recall hearing the same statement from the Leader of the EU.
