The Year of the Zombies

So a whole year dedicated to Harper's family?
Grump 12/29/2013 7:47:27 AM Report

Good morning everyone and 2013 is almost at its end. rw to the best of my recollection you have been too busy trying to ram your opinion down someone else's throat to joke about anything. Are you still smarting about getting caught BSing about what you read on google. Now speaking of whiny little boys read your post little fellow. You said I would never apologize to sparks so add one more to your long list of things you have been wrong about. You certainly have a big pair because anyone else I know who has been wrong as often as you would be hiding in the dark. Now run along and go play the Grinch somewhere, we can discuss this after the holiday. Have a great day all.
Spellchecker 12/29/2013 8:05:04 AM Report

Theprotector, why don't you read it and find out? It could add a little mirth to your day. The exaggeration in it is really not required. The factual part of it is funny enough without the exaggeration.
Grump 12/29/2013 8:31:47 AM Report

Well talk about glad tidings of great joy from P.M. Harper. He recently said that CPP is an individual's responsibility. Flaherty said it could be a good thing at the right time . I guess that all the CPP paid by individuals and Employers has been spent by these incompetents it's back to being our problem. Harper went on to say that Canadian Seniors between their savings etc. and C.P.P were doing quite well. The article is on Yahoo for those with enough stomach to read it. The writer suggests that voters keep these things in mind at the next election

Vroom Vroom,

Last night after paring the hardpack off of my drive I went to the gasbar to get some homo milk for the better half.

Which words in the previous paragraph do you think are uniquely Canadian? Answer: http://geekmom.com/2013/12/55-canadianisms/

You'll probably notice that one VRoomer's moniker made the list :) Are there any uniquely Canadian words that you like?

Wild Turkey 12/29/2013 10:18:38 AM Report

Mark--how about chips instead of French fries?Once in the southern U S ,I ordered chips with my burger, and they brought me a bag of potatoe chips.
Another one is pop instead of soda.In the old days, pop was any bottled soft drink, and not all of it was carbonated. The non carbonated stuff had a short shelf life, and tasted pretty raunchy when it got old. There were no best before dates on that stuff.
If you were to order a case of beer over there they would bring you a box of 12.Over here of course, it means 24.
Mark Brown 12/29/2013 10:20:05 AM Report

@Grump, interesting CPP article.

So Harper thinks that any retirement money over the maximum $12,500 a year currently being paid out is the responsibility of each individual Canadian.

I wonder what Harper thinks the responsibility of the government is?
Wild Turkey 12/29/2013 10:25:10 AM Report

@Mark--Oh and what about "fag" instead of cigarette? Or is that term more commonly us in the U.K.?
Just Curious 12/29/2013 10:50:22 AM Report

Maybe it's just me but it seems like service here has gone to rot since Sootoday joined Local 2. 10:48 and this page still hasn't moved to the View Room... And yes I know it's the season but how long does it take for a couple of key strokes. I would have thought it would switch up automatically at 7:00 AM or something..:)
Mark Brown 12/29/2013 10:54:01 AM Report

@Wild Turkey, too funny... I remember my parents had some sort of carafe for uncarbonated pop that had a place for little green screw-in carbonation cartridges to carbonate the pop :)

P.S. The only fee-free bank account I could find was a PC (President's Choice) Bank account that only uses PC and CIBC ABMs. The lowest commercial bank fee I could find was $3.90 a month (CIBC)

Years ago I ran a pipeline crew, mostly experienced fellows from out west. When they wanted a burger they ordered a nip which came close to getting them swatted on occasion. Some of these lads must have had cast iron stomachs as several of them ate a jar of pickled herring with a pint of chocolate milk to get straightened up in the morning.

There's a class war on the horizon.

I agree Fly and I hope it spills over onto our heartless P.M.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 1:16:51 PM Report

Grump...and in Harper's case it is not just the policies and actions but the complete lack of transparency.
He can't keep the genie in the bottle forever.
Never mind using attack ads. Stand him up in public with his record of bad government and let the voters decide.
Present the facts and the people can choose if they want more of the same.
right wing 12/29/2013 1:23:44 PM Report

Great news for all the loving Harper Haters.
Stephen Harper has stated that he fully intends to lead the conservatives in the 2015 campaign.
This has to be huge for all you Harper Haters....intoxicating, an ultimate euphoria of hallucinogenic giddiness at the very prospect of knowing that you will have Harper and the conservatives as a full majority government to hate for another term.
steelworker 12/29/2013 1:31:06 PM Report

Grump and Flyhawk..

Should the voters say they want more of the same, will you be able to stop your sniping, or will it be just the same old refrain, Harper is bad, Harper is Satan, Harper is a dictator. Plus what will be your thoughts should Mr Trudeau jr run the national debt up a few extra billions, I know, it will be Harpers' fault, won't it? I have a great idea for the new year, Grump you will win every contract you bid on, and Flyhawk, all the students will be dumbed down to the level of the lowest, that way everyone will be equal...
Oh did you notice I did not call anyone names, just to be polite.
Wisenheimer 12/29/2013 1:34:28 PM Report

Fly does this mean that you and the Grumpster won't be voting P.C. in the next election ? I'll let Bryan know so he can try to get you onside by 2015.

Mallet and rw there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Harper will be the leader of anything when the next election is over. This fellow is 10 times worse than Mulroney and at least Brian had a personality unlike this dead fish who isn't even bright enough to pretend he likes the voters. Now here is the deal if Harper wins by some miracle I'll not say a bad word publically about him. In exchange for that when he gets trounced I want to hear from both of you what a dumb pair of "Fs" you two have been. Time to put up or shut up.

flyhawk25 12/29/2013 2:11:48 PM Report

mallet...I am criticizing. Not sniping.
If you want leaders who avoid public accountability, who take from seniors and treat the poor like second-class people then go for it.
If you think opening our resources to foreign owners, deregulating banks and not keeping commitments to provinces for transfer payments, redrawing electoral boundaries and pandering to corporations while frowning on unions is a good thing then vote for Harper again.
And do yourself a favor. Leave my former students out of the discussion. You could not carry my chalk. That has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.
right wing 12/29/2013 2:15:49 PM Report

Mallet

Watch you don't get a hernia trying carry that piece of chalk....
Talk about your goofy analogies.
right wing 12/29/2013 2:17:24 PM Report

Grump

Here is the deal.
Tell us who is going to "trounce" him.

I shall pour a single malt while I await your response...this is going to be pure entertainment.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 2:26:42 PM Report

And talk about sniping and once again offering nothing to a discussion between two others.
The issue is Harper's lack of leadership not a perception about teaching.
right wing 12/29/2013 2:30:59 PM Report

Stephen Harper's so called "lack of leadership" is your perception and has been backed by nothing more than your rant filled with your typical non-facts.

Now what was that you were mumbling about teaching....
Grump 12/29/2013 2:34:05 PM Report

Never mind Harper's character flaws, the Debt in now 662 billion dollars and the interest is at present 503 dollars per second. Every man ,woman and child in Canada now owes over 19,000.00 of this debt. This interest adds roughly 3/4 of a million dollars a day to our debt. Harper and Flaherty have bragged they will balance the budget in 2015 and have roughly a 3 billion dollar surplus. The interest alone by then works out to several hundred billion a year alone. If you fellows can swallow this much B.S. and even consider he will be re-elected you need to go give your heads a good shake. This is not really about Harper, this is about a heartless P.M. who is cutting everything the little guy can bear and is totally incompetent to boot and you still buy in to his lame brand of B.S.
right wing 12/29/2013 2:37:27 PM Report

Grump

Answer the question.
Who is going to "trounce" Harper and the conservatives?
Grump 12/29/2013 2:40:57 PM Report

Hey rw those are facts and they sure are where Harper has taken us and it isn't just my perception . Now you and Mallet get busy making up as many dumb assed excuses as you can think of to show that he isn't a heartless incompetent who has spent the Country into the poor house.
Grump 12/29/2013 2:42:16 PM Report

rw wake up Bozo the clown could beat him.
steelworker 12/29/2013 2:42:50 PM Report

I think Bong Boy has it all over Angry Tom but neither one is a match for Harper.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 2:46:13 PM Report

Well you wanted facts and Grump buried you in them. Given those facts either of the opposition parties could defeat him.
I still think he may bail before the next election. That's generally what bad leaders do - see McGuinty and Harris.
right wing 12/29/2013 2:54:19 PM Report

Grump

I agree with you, it is a fact that Canada has a deficit.
Now how about this fact.
Three Prime Ministers of Canada have put their energies into cleaning up the wreckage left by Pierre Trudeau.
They are Brian Mulroney, Jean Chretien and Stephen Harper.
The work has taken almost 30 years.
I don't expect any response from you on this other than your typical ill informed rant.
Name me another Prime Minister that has led Canada during an economy such as the one faced by the entire world.
Now tell us all how any other party would have done anything different that would have resulted in a declining or zero deficit.

Answer the question.

Who is going to "trounce" Harper and the conservatives.

right wing 12/29/2013 2:56:15 PM Report

Buried me in facts...
Now that is laughable.
Canada has a deficit, yes we all know that.
Now lets see if the mouth piece libs answer any of the real hard questions.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 2:56:48 PM Report

Why is it acceptable to pass the blame back three PMs ago but not acceptable to blame GWB's deficit left for Obama to clean up?
right wing 12/29/2013 3:00:51 PM Report

Oh here we go.
A favorite of the Libs...avoid the answer and deflect...something they regularly lecture about.
What a pile of hypocrites.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 3:08:11 PM Report

No - it is a response to your typical responses.
The point is that you can't suck and blow at the same time and use one criteria in one place and not in another.
Just ask McCain and Romney if the sins of the last president didn't stick to them.
Then apply the same rule to Harper.
right wing 12/29/2013 3:11:00 PM Report

Have fun on your sit and spin fly.

Grump

I'll ask you an easier one (perhaps)for you.
Are Government deficits better for the private sector or are surpluses.
You are a player in the private sector you should know this.
Now run along and google....
Retreaded 12/29/2013 3:13:59 PM Report

Due to a lack of any credible opposition from the NDP and the LIBERALS...I see Harper winning a minority government in 2015. Heaven help us then.
K.Wynne is set to also win a minority government...people like her despite her party affiliation. If she ran for the PC's she would have a majority. HUDAK CANNOT WIN and HORVATH will pay the price for propping up the Liberals. My crystal ball is working overtime.
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 3:16:26 PM Report

rw...just answer the question before you hit more single malt.
Why should there be a double standard?
Grump 12/29/2013 3:16:59 PM Report

rw Again part fact with a good deal of B.S. thrown in. Have you ever heard the old saying, "do me once shame on you", "do me twice shame on me". Well sunshine this is three times now and apparently you still like it. Yes Trudeau spent it up, then so did Mulroney, then Mike Harris and finally Stephen Harper who set new records for spending and running up the debt. These frugal Conservatives are anything but and are actually the big time spenders of the lot. Harper was busy blowing the surplus left to him going into the recession and didn't even know he was already in one. Harper will not be re-elected because you lot think he is the best of a lot of poor choices. There just aren't enough of you die hards left. But not to worry these folks have their own nests well feathered.
right wing 12/29/2013 3:18:18 PM Report

Here's another one for you Grump.

During rough world wide economic times should a government pay more attention to the economy, balancing a budget, reigning in spending and then tackle a deficit or should it tackle a deficit first.
right wing 12/29/2013 3:20:06 PM Report

...again the two from the apple dumpling gang deflect and avoid.

...and fly lets not talk about who has more of what.
right wing 12/29/2013 3:22:34 PM Report

Retreaded

That's not such bad crystal balling.
I will disagree on the federal level and say the conservatives will return with a majority.
Once the debates start and the opposition have to actually answer hard questions the voters will respond in kind like they did during the last federal election.
right wing 12/29/2013 3:23:51 PM Report

Grump

You actually got done once.
Good for you old chap.
Miracles do happen....
flyhawk25 12/29/2013 3:29:32 PM Report

So if Harper's deficit is okay then so must Obama's.
Right?
Grump 12/29/2013 3:30:14 PM Report

Retreaded, If the NDP members had any brains they would vote for Wynne. If Hudak by some chance got in he would bring right to work legislation into ON. destroying the Middle class. Harper has already made big inroads on this and we sure as hell don't need to become another part of the third world like the U.S. states that have adopted right to work. I don't think you would like it much either rw, scraping for work at 15 or 20 buck an hour.

Flyhawk..

I am just saying what a lot of Universities have been saying for some time that the level of the students applying has dropped over the years. Which means that either they are not being taught or the level has dropped. Now most of the teachers I know do their level best to teach the people in front of them, which means the level required has been dropped, so that those who are not quite up to standard can be passed, which in my day was known as dumbing down rather than leveling up. Now if you take offence at that I am sorry, in fact I did not think teachers used chalk anymore, but if I am wrong I would be delighted to carry your Ipad!
Grump 12/29/2013 4:25:31 PM Report

Retreaded tell your crystal ball to take a history lesson. When Mulroney figured out he wasn't going to make it he travelled the world on the Canadian taxpayer's dime and left Kim holding the bag. He was not as hated as Harper but once you PO the majority you are dead in the water. Harper has been getting his trips in so I believe there is a pattern. rw your question is moot as Harper didn't do any of the above as I have said repeatedly he is an incompetent. Now don't you be getting gun shy on me as I expect a healthy wager from you when the time comes as my Children's charity could use some of your cold ,hard dinero. LMAO.

mallet...good stuff.
Of course back in my day we actually had chalk. And pencil sharpeners.
I can't say how good or bad it is now but knew that when I left and they introduced 'standards' there would be a general lowering of actually teaching and it would be replaced by training kids to do standardized tests.
As I've often said - I would not last a week in today's schools.
Nor would I want to try.

After 52 years, I use overhead projectors, document cameras and computers with power point presentations in some classes. However, the most effective delivery in a mathematics class is still chalk and talk so yes, chalk is still in use ...at least in my classroom.
redranger 12/29/2013 8:52:55 PM Report

flyhawk25 12/29/2013 9:26:22 PM Report

RR...the best math teacher I ever knew was Tom Harrington who taught a class in math methodology in teachers' college.
He did a lesson on geometry using just a meat skewer.
He stuck it point up in front of us and said - this is a point. When I remove it the point will still be there. Now I am going to stretch it right and left to infinity. Now I'm going to cut it right here and here and that is a line segment.
Now I'm going to push it towards you and that is a plane.
I ducked and he had me.
He went on from there but you get the idea. No props. Just a stick to start.
If he could teach me math he could teach a walrus how to tap dance.
Over fifty years later and I can still see it in wonder.
Amazing what a gifted teacher can do with very little.
