Received this in my email today..

Friend,

Doing the right thing isn't always easy.

When Prime Minister Stephen Harper became Prime Minister, he declared that it would no longer be good enough for Canada to"go along to get along" on the world stage.
For too long, Canada stayed silent when we should have spoken up.

Consider Israel. Israel is one of our closest friends. They believe in basic human rights. And they are the only democracy in the most violent part of the world.
But for years Canada stood by while Israel was attacked from all sides by academic elites, by the UN, and sometimes even by rockets.
But no more. Under our leadership, Canada is doing the right thing. In January, Prime Minister Harper will travel to the Holy Land for the first time. We are standing shoulder to shoulder with countries and governments that share Canadian values.
Doing the right thing isnt always easy. But neither is being Prime Minister.
Thats why we must make sure Justin Trudeau is never elected to that office.
So will you do the right thing and donate to our Party today?

Thankful for not getting the ice-storm here! Relatives say pretty bad down there.
David Poluck 12/23/2013 6:35:03 AM Report

Sorry I must have missed something...how are these things connected?

Prometheus,
Good link. Checked it out and looks like it would work for Nanag.

What a beautiful tool....the internet.
theprotector 12/23/2013 7:13:48 AM Report

wow thats one pathetic e-mail you got - I would tell him to go piss up a rope with that garbage!
soowat 12/23/2013 7:29:26 AM Report

David Poluck;

Prime Minister Harper could better spend his time on something other than trying to put us on the world stage. Thanks to Doug Ford the "putting Canada on the world stage ship"has already sailed.
Bobby Nerves 12/23/2013 7:39:25 AM Report

Good morning all.

Thank you Grump and for your family and yourself as well.

Positive thoughts for the people in TO and the GTA, and Quebec that are affected for the storm.

Well, my beloved Toronto was on fire for few days and had to cool down a bit, but not that much; but they know how to walk out of it with a smile.

We have a reader/writer from Scarborough and would be nice to have news from her.

Wicket, you may have heard something, let us know... and if you organize something down Jan or Feb, I'm in for it.

BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 7:43:59 AM Report

soowat....very true.
David Poluck 12/23/2013 7:56:55 AM Report

soo..Just had a similar conversation with a friend in T.O.
He figures just the advertising alone would have cost millions..Now everybody knows about Toronto!
Zing 12/23/2013 8:28:47 AM Report

David Poluck

I think Rob Ford has already cracked the 'make Toronto famous' code in one of his drunken stupors.

Yes but he apologized.
flyhawk25 12/23/2013 8:48:09 AM Report

My thoughts are with everyone traveling this holiday. My family spent the first ten years we lived here getting back to Chicago for Christmas by train.Lovely memory. But now it's my son and daughter in law who will be driving to S. Ontario for a few days to visit with her family.I won't exhale until they're back.
Spellchecker 12/23/2013 8:57:02 AM Report

Great post there, David Poluck. I don't vote for any of them but Harper's sure got that one right.

DP...interesting note from the Tories.
In NA if you want to win elections you come out for Israel.
Simply stared there are more Jews over here than Palestinians. And I support Israel as well - peacefully.

FOURTH or FIFTH (not sure) ANNUAL CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR get together -
It will be on FRIDAY, December 27th at 1 p.m. at my house. (this is a change of date/day due to personal commitments).
It is a social for Summit (news/view/blue room) and Social (red room); spouses welcome.
Please e-mail me at wicket_60@hotmail.com if you plan on or hope to attend.
Thanks
BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 9:31:45 AM Report

Rob Ford is quite concerned about downed 'live wires'. Apology to follow!
flyhawk25 12/23/2013 9:40:55 AM Report

Wicket...thank you for your kind and very generous offer.
Unfortunately I too have family things that need attending.
While part of my family is away I still have a daughter here and we have a date.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well as the attendees.
Zing 12/23/2013 10:00:06 AM Report

The Christmas Summit is **cancelled*** due to lack of attendees.
BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 10:09:16 AM Report

Zing, I think the date was changed.

Thank you also, to Wicket, for the gracious invite. I'm not going to be available either. I will be touring Havana, visiting Hemingway's Bar and having a 'sit down' with Fidel.
flyhawk25 12/23/2013 10:11:09 AM Report

Hope you packed your 'Che beret'.
Adios.
BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 10:18:27 AM Report

Nice prop, eh fly.

Nah, the Che beret was appropriate for the 'summit' though. I take it on my jaunts to visit friends in Michigan. Most of them don't quite understand their own governments attitude towards Cuba.

That's the strange thing: most of the American people I know, aren't thrilled with their government either; but they quickly point out just how much they love their country.
BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 10:35:56 AM Report

I visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan mostly. The people there have very similar concerns to us Canucks; seemingly more in common with us than, say, the Duck Bros. After viewing 5 minutes of that show, you begin to understand how someone like Dubya could actually become president. He talked their talk and sort of walked their walk....literally. The 'ones' who believe they could elect a guinea pig and the country would thrive.

flyhawk25 12/23/2013 10:39:18 AM Report

BB...American patriotism is amazing and buffers government from big internal problems.
I find it best to not get too incensed over most of it because as a group they really are nice folks.
But you know that.
Zing 12/23/2013 10:58:27 AM Report

BIG BROTHER

The date was changed, then the event was cancelled. There were only two people wishing to attend.

:~)
Wicket 12/23/2013 11:11:31 AM Report

Zing, there were only two people AVAILABLE to attend. It seems that this is the year to travel. Several are visiting family in far away places and even to Southern Ontario; others have to work; others have out-of-town company and plans already made. It is always fun to have a lunch date at the Canadian and we will arrange something in the New Year for that and perhaps there will be around 15-20 of us attending.

Have a very Merry Christmas and holiday celebration everyone.
flyhawk25 12/23/2013 11:13:07 AM Report

Thanks again Wicket.
Christmas blessings to you.
Zing 12/23/2013 12:16:07 PM Report

Thanks Wicket.
Grump 12/23/2013 12:18:35 PM Report

Harper is getting desperate, he and his government ran a 2.5 Billion deficit in Oct. adding that to our debt. These are the incompetents that are going to balance the budget????. Also he is far from the first Canadian Prime Minister to support Israel. Wicket I always enjoy attending but it was not possible at this time of year no matter how I tried to shift things around. Glad you will have it later as there are a number of new posters I would enjoy meeting and of course seeing the ones I have met again. Have a Very Merry Christmas and don't forget to really spoil that guy of yours. lol
BIG BROTHER 12/23/2013 12:31:08 PM Report

Thanks Zing.
mallet 12/23/2013 12:47:30 PM Report

I guess that old saying that one is a tragedy and a 100thousand is just a statistic. Listening to the news this lunch time I had images of mass destruction in Southern Ontario, instead of a large power outage and tree branches making for difficult driving. In Northern Ontario this is just a normal winter, power outages and blocked roads, due to accidents and downed power lines and trees and snow, but I seldom if ever see it making the national or even the local news. Very little happens north of the French River to warrant a reporter moving far from their office it seems...
So Merry Christmas to all those without power and a Happy new year when it is restored...
flyhawk25 12/23/2013 1:43:36 PM Report

mallet...you nailed it.Poor reporting with a GTA bias has a tendency to exaggerate their problems.
It is still difficult to feel too much sympathy for a culture dependent on fossil fuels without some of the redundancy safeguards many of us have here.
And I have friends and family affected by this but think back a few years to the post war up here and how we somehow managed
And of course well before that the FN folks did not rely on the technologies that have become the cornerstone of our 'progress'.
old-cat33 12/23/2013 2:15:58 PM Report

mallet: How come the weather people don't name the winter storms like they do the hurricanes?...LOL.
mallet 12/23/2013 2:24:26 PM Report

Old Cat...

Simple really, there are only so many names that people recognise as christian names, and after the hurricanes and typhons, not many left over for snow/ice storms, and if you numbered them, then it would be hard for some to go past twenty without dropping their pants or taking their tops off.... LMAO..
Wild Turkey 12/23/2013 2:27:22 PM Report

Good afternoon, all.Does anyone remember that whackie Canadian show " Red Green",and possum lodge?Well it's a stretch but it WAS a little bit like The Duck Guys. They used to show it on P.B.S. from Detroit, and they (Red Green and friends) had a huge following in Wisconsin and Michigan.
When C.B.C. dropped Jeopardy!!!CHCH T.V. in Hamilton picked it up, and they are doing quite well with it.If The Duck guys are stuck for a "home", then maybe Hamilton would be interested? They could beam it back to The States, and would do quite well.
All of you travellers----take care and drive safely ---look out for the other guy and leave yourselves lots of time.
Merry Christmas to all, and have a Happy New year.

The Weather Channel does name winter storms, at least for the US.

Here is the list for this year

Just a thought,
I watch a lot of hunting on the tube, enjoy it very much. They advertise scent blockers ,you know the stuff so deer and wild animals can't smell you.
The deer have 3 to 1 better smell than dogs, they use dogs to detect drugs. If the scent blocker is so good , why haven't the smugglers picked up on this fantastic item.
old-cat33 12/23/2013 5:40:23 PM Report

Prometheus: LOL ,I was just joking around but thanks for the info. I checked it out and they name the storms in the states.
I think here in Canada we should name our winter storms that cause a lot of damage and cost a lot of money like that ice storm in Toronto.
And being it's Mother Nature causing the storms they should have all women names!!.......LOL.
