Felt sorry for the Chicago back up goalie,

Those of us who love language should read Conrad Black's National Post piece reprinted partially on the National News site.It is a perfect example of overwritten prose. It's so bombastic it's good.
Aside from the content being nonsense it is apparent that Black is in love with his own 'command' of language.
Obviously he never heard of the philosophy that less is more.
Either that or they pay by the word and he needs the money.

Good morning everyone, a bit more snow last night. Sheesh Mallet I read you response re government spending this a.m. and I want to make sure I understand your thinking. Now the first 50 Billion spent on infrastructure was the fault of the opposition and the remaining 200 Billion that Harper whizzed away was still the fault of the opposition because they didn't stop him? Most of this money was spent before anyone else even knew about it and Harper is such a reasonable and pliable man he of course would have agreed. Mallet you are always good at making excuses for Harper but this is pure unadulterated B.S. Have a great day all.
Grump 12/15/2013 8:12:12 AM Report

Good morning Fly. Now Conrad Black isn't he another fine upstanding Conservative who likes to preach to the rest of us? They are trying to impart their values on us, you know the ones they claim to have. That said actions do always speak louder than words, hence their masks slip. I truly have to wonder where all the old time Conservatives have gone. You certainly don't see anything but faint traces of them among this lot.

What a talented group of choristers and musicians! We enjoyed "The Messiah" last night at the Central United Church.
It was very good...very good...very, very good. Good, good, good...very good, very good. Good, good, good ... it was very, ery, ery, ery, ery, ery, ery (drum roll) gooood!
No thematic segue into "Stairway to Heaven" as an encore, though!
For those who wanted to point Percy at the porcelain at the intermission, I'm told the washroom facilities were woefully inadequate. "Hallelujah for Depends" was the whispered consensus of the mainly aging audience.

Get this.
Now Harper says that increasing CPP pension payments for seniors is 'a job discouraging payroll tax'.
Not only is that the wrong statement it is so hypocritical that it is beyond comment coming from him.
Grump 12/15/2013 9:13:50 AM Report

Fly maybe we can now get the neo-con chorus on here to support Harper's latest proof that he doesn't give a furry rat's butt about seniors or much else to do with taxpayers.

I Think I've solved the problem of these ever increasing deficits. It all started when some genius decided the country should go metric. The money was already decimal, so when the finance dept."went metric" all hell broke loose. They thought one pound = one kilo.
Thus 450 million bucks (450 grams =1 pound)became one billion bucks(1 kilo = 1ooo grams)
So the money coming in-taxes- was imperial measurement, and the money going out was metric.
That's why when Harper says He spent 450 million, it was actually one billion!!!!
Grump 12/15/2013 9:54:03 AM Report

I have to wonder where the two morons on here went who used to post every day or second day how glorious it would be to have another wonderful Harper majority in 2015. I suspect it wasn't because they suddenly grew a brain. I was just listing the groups that Harper has PO'd or is working on. The Military, The Veterans, The Poor, Seniors, The families of Seniors, The Scientists, The First Nations, even a good part of his own caucus and certainly a good part of the Senate that he hand stacked. The way he has handled Keystone the oil patch may not love him so much either.

I have a question . I read all the comments on line and the petition wanting people to sign. I am in full agreement with the sentence this woman got. I am a pet lover also. But pray tell me why no one ever takes up a petition about the way our Vets here turn pets away because they have been to a vet in USA or they have never seen the animal before. These people are pet DRS and they do this, and the pet dies. I think they are even worse for what they do then this woman. And yes I do think her sentence was lite.
Retreaded 12/15/2013 10:43:01 AM Report

What was the MAXIMUM this woman could have received?
Just Curious 12/15/2013 11:08:47 AM Report

Northern male, if you take your pet across the river for one thing ,take it over for everything..I take mine to a Vet on this side, always have ,always will. I have no problem at all, even get same day service if I call with a problem.. If you have a problem, take it over the river if that's where you choose to get everything else done..It seems to me you have way more concern for a buck than your pet...

And Oldie, if your wife can't get to the mailbox, then you go.. What did she marry you for??:). I realize there will be a few problems to be worked out but we , as a country, can't afford to keep supporting these money sucking institutions for the benefit of a few people that have a problem. Most new subdivisions have only the boxes and virtually all rural people have the same thing. I had them 12 yrs ago in Goulais when I lived there, and people had to drive several miles to get there. You just adapted and got your mail when you had reason to go by the boxes. There is nothing coming in the mail these days that can't wait for a day or two to get read. (threw Bryans Xmas card directly in the trash where it belonged.)..

Wild Turkey, if you figure maybe 35,000 mailouts every time at what is gonna be 85 cents a pop, that's a lot of bucks. We really need to get rid of some of this stuff. I,personally, have never looked at any of this crap regardless of which political side it came from. Such a waste... And at the risk of hurting Spelly's feelings, the only real requirement for postal carriers is the ability is to be able to read and walk at the same time, and judging by the amount of wrong mail I get, when I get any, I'm not at all sure that that is a requirement..:)..

just curious---Of course I would go if I had to--I also do all the shopping.
She stays home and does everything she can.

As for a few---as you call them---who can't get to a Community Box---since when have we ever ignored the minority by not paying for them.

I made several suggestions that Canada Post could consider---maybe you missed that Post.

When Canada Post reduces the Pensions that the Mail workers negotiated because they have not fully funded the Plan then the s--t will hit the Fan and the taxpayers will have to pick up the tab---so why not leave the Delivery as it is to those who depend on it and add that to the taxpayers tab as well because we are going to pay anyway so why cut off the Service ?

It will not be the only Service that minorities get in Canada.

By the way--if you are one of the posters who want to Privatize Canada Post--who is going to buy it with the huge deficit that they have in the Pension Fund ?

Might I suggest that you don't care until the problem becomes yours.
northernmale 12/15/2013 11:53:14 AM Report

Just Curious I think you may be missing the point, or maybe you just don't want to get it and your a Vet ,or a friend of. It should not matter where your pet has been taken, in an emergency they should have to see them. . They are getting paid no matter what. And if as you seem to think I love my money more then my pet your blowing smoke out of you no what. They way over charge over here for everything. In an emergency and they are being called out we would have to pay well anyway I am sure. Imagine if the Drs at the hospital felt that way.A Vet I am sure takes an oath just like a DR.Also my point was why is everyone down on this woman when the vet refuses not see your pet and they die what makes them any better? And the pet suffers. I do not see a whole lot of difference,

Well I may not be "better educated" as viewed by my "pal", flyhawk...but I followed this whole "man driven global warming" hoax from the start. I ain't no David Suzuki either...I don't own four homes or an island co-owned with an oil company and I don't tell others to give up their beer fridge while I jet around the world...but I did call this man driven warming due to carbon emissions a bunch of was not hard to do if you educated yourself and did not simply swallow the gospel according to Gore or did many others.
The best thing about these wild claims is time...and time is proving what is true...must be frustrating for the Gore's and Suzuki's of the world when the planet and the atmosphere does not behave like they want it to in order for it to back up their "science".
Of course this does not make the headlines like all the scary doom and gloom predictions you wonder why.

"A leaked copy of the world's most authoritative climate study reveals scientific forecasts of imminent doom were drastically wrong.

The Mail on Sunday has obtained the final draft of a report to be published later this month by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the ultimate watchdog whose massive, six-yearly 'assessments' are accepted by environmentalists, politicians and experts as the gospel of climate science.

They are cited worldwide to justify swingeing fossil fuel taxes and subsidies for 'renewable' energy.

Yet the leaked report makes the extraordinary concession that over the past 15 years, recorded world temperatures have increased at only a quarter of the rate of IPCC claimed when it published its last assessment in 2007"

Having dual British/Canadian citizenship has been legal since 1977. Suffice it to say that Jean Chretien did not like Conrad Black much, and used the obscure "1919 Nickle Resolution" to make sure that Black could not accept the "peerage" appointment recommended by P.M. Tony Blair and remain a Canadian citizen.
It was, and still is thought of as being a petty move, unbecoming of a Canadian Prime Minister.
Rule #1 of partisan political sniping.
Never let facts get in the way.
flyhawk25 12/15/2013 12:59:53 PM Report

"thought of was a petty political move" is an opinion. Not a fact.
The fact is that Black turned his back on Canada. His choice.

Good Call BB

I followed the link suggested (even your first link posted gets you in if you hunt around the page).

The report is clear in its assessment of Global Warming ... and rw's credibility on the subject now ranks with that of the Ol B'ser (on many subjects).

That's what happens when a poster "selects" information piecemeal from a source ... to try bolster their "facts" ... and ignores the main thrust of the scientific information presented.
Just Curious 12/15/2013 1:03:27 PM Report

Northernmale; Sometimes I wonder if YOU ever read these posts on here...GOOD health?? GOOD health??? I am old, 71 in fact and my health is anything but GOOD... The difference is I don't sit around feeling sorry for myself about it. I don't have a pot to piss in but even if I did I would still do my stuff on this side of the border. People that keep running over there for everything and then bitch about the service and taxes and things on this side don't impress me much. It costs a lot more to operate in Canada for a lot of reasons but it's still OUR country and should be supported as much as possible..

And Oldie, granted there are some that will be inconvenienced by loss of carrier service but where do you draw the line to try to accommodate those that are? Would you have a truck run all over town dropping off mail to a few that may have trouble getting to the boxes? That would be self-defeating, to say the least. As with any changes to our normal way of life, there will be a lot of bitching and complaining but after a bit people adjust and life goes on. Don't forget, it wasn't that long ago you had mail delivery at your door no matter how far you lived out in the country. We lost that and people adjusted and life goes on, so it will with this...:)

Regarding "Mr."Black... didn't he willingly renounce his Canadian Citizenship so he could become a British peer? He valued the honor more than our citizenship.

And now, more to the point, isn't he ineligible for citizenship under sect.22 of the ACT?

It states that no person convicted of a crime outside of Canada, which would be considered an "indictable offense" under Canadian law, can be a candidate for Canadian Citizenship.

It takes 5 minutes or less to get the point of the report. And it is totally contrary to rw's viewpoint. I'm thinking he quoted something from Rush's page or some other whacko and took it as gospel. But the report, ironically, doesn't seem to support or even suggest anything rw said. And he's the one whom directed all of us to the link!! Goes to show how reliance on one source for info can cause credibility lapses.

Fly, sadly those who don't think cleaning up the environment makes good business sense can't seem to see past their noses. We (all of us) have a vested interest in the well being of the earth. Even if all of the scientific reports are bogus, at least we aren't accepting of the fact that we are willing to collectively live in a cesspool. Personally, I think the investment in sustainable energy programs are a good start at the long term thinking, so lacking in the business world. They (business') can't see past the bottom line and need to be encouraged (forced) to do the right thing.

I will give the IPCC credit for one thing...they are great a coming up with tittles for things that screw up their science.
Since temperatures have not risen according to their models they now say that they recognize the "global warming pause."
I mean you really gotta love that.
Things are not unfolding as they wanted them to so now global warming is simply on a pause.
Global warming has been active and pausing since this planet was created.

I'm certainly no expert or want to be on the environment but the terrible storms world wide seem to be a lot more frequent these days. I agree that green energy will one day be the norm, not an albatross to some as it is now. I also have to think that with the reduced cost of transmission lines it will work out comparable in time. It certainly doesn't have the huge price tags of nuclear and hydro . There also may be a small hope that now that our resident expert on everything has lost a chunk of credibility that we can have some reasonable discussions.

When he decides to call an election, you and your buddies and their pals will have the chance to say 'Times up, out you go" and then we shall see what sort of job they make of it. Stats: I only learned about the vinegar thing with poached eggs a couple of years ago. Vinegar has many uses that are non-culinary, I discovered, especially from price-conscious young ladies in my youth.

Disaster! I made a slow-cooker pork with mushrooms and wine with apples, celery, onions and broccoli. The slow-cooker must have gone haywire as I smelled burning and, sure enough, even on low, the stuff around the edge burned, which, of course, gave everything a burned taste. It is already over, as my MIL likes to eat early. My wife ate a bowl of porridge and the MIL and I gamely struggled on.

A three meal bulk-cooking is going in the garbage. That is the first time that something like that has happened.
At least the food at Great Northern Retirement will taste a little better to the MIL.

"I discovered, especially from price-conscious young ladies in my youth."

Tell me more....I am dying to know!

Slow cookers suck! They are for lazy people and lefties!
Serves you right!

Food is something we put in our mouths every day.

Food is intimate and needs to be treated like sex. Carefully and with a modicum of consideration.
A slowcooker is like going to a's ok but the whole experience lacks depth.
Don't do it again!

A prostitute is okay if you can keep her on low all day and don't singe her around the edges.

rw: as an unscientific artsy-fartsy type, I have read loads including whole books from Lovelock, Flannery and others. Amid this world of over-information, I have made a point of reading the detractors, too. To cut a long story short, I agree with Stats that it is a combination of natural and man-made, but the jury is out on the percentage. I do not hug trees, but I believe that we should do our best to do our best for the environment. I had a conversation with a really good friend in the U.K., part of our reunion, who is a world expert on discovering oil and a former VP of BP. Remember, he discovers oil, but doesn't set up rigs. He discovered oil for Nova Scotia. He claims that fracking, done right, is fine and that people don't understand the science.
It's hard to separate the politics from the science.
Google Matt (our name for him)Luheshi if you are interested in seeing a video that certainly sends me to sleep.

You know how to hit a man when he's down, stats. The burnt sloppy mess is not even in the garbage bag and you're rubbing salt (kosher) in the wound. I don't do the slow cooker often, but it is easy, a kind of proletariat necessity in these hard times. A chef friend also poo-pood the slow cooker thing. I am bloodied but unbowed. When you hear a MIL, with no taste buds left, say that it was "really O.K." you know there's hope.
shakespeare 12/15/2013 7:18:05 PM Report

I should point out that the oil for Nova Scotia is under the sea. His comment on fracking referred to a variety of places in the world.

"singe around the edges"?

I need more info on that one.

What edges and what needs to not be it were...

And had it coming....I will kick even if you're down when it comes to food preparation.
The mere possession of a slow cooker is as abhorrent as pineapple or pepperoni on pizza!
It's not only indecent but immoral!

Does anyone know what happened on Second Line between People's Rd and Farwell Terrace; traffic re-routed, lots of big trucks, flashing lights...was coming out of the Market Mall (around 4:30 p.m.) but turned and went down Korah Rd to avoid the traffic congestion.

With all that about the slow cooker I can't begin to imagine where I, and my pressure cooker, fit in to the picture.

I am afraid steels is right!

A pressure cooker is the equivalent as dating your sister.

Ah...burning hair eh steels?

I get the visuals now....mildly upsetting but strangely erotic.....

Thank you!

I don't know what the hell you're talking about. (It's what you should do when deciding what side of the fence you wish to stand on.
Yes it is "the gospel" of those that want to buy into that doctrine and listen to their preaching, of course they believe it lock stock and barrel.)But I think Shakey hit it on the head. Your dancing on hot coals.

The 'they' you are referring to are world class scientists, from countries all over the world. I'll reiterate...I'll take the word of world class, peer reviewed scientists
over your's, Rush's or some right wing/left wing hack who is likely on the payroll of the Koch brothers or big oil. That's the side of the fence I'll go with. You are the closed minded, shallow thinker, buyer of the crap, lock, stock and barrel.

Re your 5:20 post, many years ago I was taught the difference between a boiled egg and a raw egg, before opening it, give it a spin on the table, if it spins,it is cooked, if it just flops ,it is raw.

We've both been around long enough to know the type. You could come down off the mountain with those results chiseled in stone and you'd get the same response.
We both read the different scientific opinions from many sources.
This type of shallow reasoning and specious argument are all over the internet.
Neither one of us will ever enlighten a light bulb that does not work.
I find it best to limit discussions with this group to simple opinions.

Any more complex thoughts just muddies the swamp water.
