Good morning everyone.

Bounder

I made a mistake, I didn`t realize I bought Maple Flavoured Bacon until I opened it.
So, I have half of regular bacon and the flavoured, I hope it doesn`t alter the taste too much.

Anyone one ever use maple flavoured bacon in their baked beans?

Gee, it`s cold out this morning.
celeste5 12/10/2013 8:41:49 AM Report

The last part of my post should`ve been first, LOL, as long as everyone understands it`s okay, right.
soowat 12/10/2013 8:53:32 AM Report

Don't know about you but momma puts brown sugar in her baked beans. If she uses maple flavoured bacon, she just reduces the amount of brown sugar a bit and the taste is pretty much the same. I asked her for a more precise measure but she is one of those scoop of this ,handful of that and a pinch of the other kind of cooks

Celeste: I just baked a batch of beans but I used salt pork, brown sugar and molasses, which is something of a Boston style. I don't think you can go wrong with maple bacon -- sort of Canadian style. In fact, in her Canadiana Cookbook, Mme. Jehane Benoit, has a recipe for maple syrup and rum baked beans. Be adventurous and enjoy!!

Good morning Celeste---if you use a recipe that calls for brown sugar, and have only maple bacon and no salt pork , then simply reduce the amount of brown sugar .Ihave seen ( and tried) a recipe that calls for just maple syrup, and no brown sugar at all. It's good to experiment, until you hit the very best combination. My Aunt Hilda made the very best baked beans. Her recipe is a closely guarded secret, which I haven't been able to pry out of my Cousins-YET.Be sure to keep track of all the ingredients, because you don't want to say to yourself--"Boy that was good--now what were the portions again"L.O.L.

Soowat

Thanks, My father cooked the same way.
I didn`t reduce the brown sugar, I hope it`s not too sweet.

Hello Y'All.

Crisp & nasty outside. Went for a walk to the store and froze - took longer because my bones were (seized) up!

Going to be there welcoming Brad & the boys into town 6 p.m. They are young still yet so, it's going to be good at Sochi. Lots of years left to these dudes. Plenty o'action

I make my beans in my slow cooker....

Have a great day - BE CAREFUL

Morning Folks..

Oh isn't it great when teacher makes a mistake... YEAH.

Kinda (of) brisk out there this AM, wind has dropped again for a while and I have to clean the porch out, lots of snow in there today. Will have to go clear the top of the driveway as well, the plow was not along until late yesterday..

We don't do much bottling any more, used to do fruit and veggies, but with only the two of us, takes too long to eat it all, and I am damned if I am going to make stuff and have to deliver it as well.

I had a call from Algoma power this Am, in response to my complaint regarding power outages, guess they do not like getting letters from the OEB, but when they tell me they are working in my area I expect them to be in the Goulais area, not Montreal River area, but thats the area for the Sault crews, North of the Sault to Montreal River and over to the Searchmont area.. I also reminded them that trees grow year after year, they do not stop because their forestry people have been along 4/5 years ago..

You all have a great day out there...

Good morning all, late, went across the ditch , absolutely great gas saving. 43 us gallons @ 3.36 = $ 143.56 haven't figured out yet but I would think more than a $ 60.00 saving, which I'd take any day.
Celest5 free baked beans are always good.

mallet 12/10/2013 5:02:34 PM Report

Bounder...

I did not know too many people at the steel plant, I met a few when some were draughted over to the Tube mill which is where I worked most of the time, except for a time in the General gang, when they laid off a lot of Maintainance(sp) people and sent them to the plant. You probably knew/know my brother Ken H, he was an Ironworker at the plant for 30 odd years. I was the last man on the list at the last layoff I was involved in, I had another job to go to, and they would not release me, tell me I had a job the next week, or give me leave of absence, so I quit. Took my pension out of ASI, spent 2 years in the bush at Magnicon, then 6 months up in the Artic at Nansivik, then nearly a year in North Africa, and finished off with 10 years at Inco, combnine that with my years in the UK and I was ready to retire, let some young guy take over and rest on my laurels so to speak...
bounder 12/10/2013 5:17:48 PM Report
