THE BROWN BAG
Food for thought for the everyday and hardworking citizens of Sault Ste. Marie
Yes soowat, and if Rob Ford took a leave of absence to go into rehab to have the best chance to cure his addictions, there would be a... "Ford Fiesta"! :)
Thanks to the 27 people who took the time yesterday to contact me to provide their detailed feedback!
Of the 27 people who responded yesterday, there were only 2... VRoomers flyhawk25 and mallet... who got anywhere near wanting City Council to have us brown bagging taxpayers CONTINUE PAYING $1.1 Million dollars FOREVER for the FULLY PAID OFF Sault Area Hospital so that City Council can use our $1.1 Million dollars of "lunch money", every year going forward, on whatever THEY want.
Based on the barrage of feedback I received yesterday, I got the distinct impression that $179 Million dollars of our hard earned tax dollars is already plenty enough for City Council to use as they see fit.
Perhaps flyhawk25 and mallet would like to clarify their positions about what THEY WANT City Council to do? Or, maybe not.
As the feedback poured in, however, a third option emerged:
3) CONTINUE TO COLLECT the $1.1 Million each year, BUT LET THE CITIZENS DECIDE WHAT THE MONEY SHOULD BE USED FOR.
This third option was quite a popular option amongst people who later identified themselves as renters. Here's what the citizens who chose option 3) wanted the $1.1 Million dollars spent on:
2 VOTES - COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING:
"Parks and free stuff like the John Rowswell Hub Trail that my son and I can enjoy together"(1), and "Eliminate the street between the Station Mall and the Boardwalk (St. Mary's River Drive) to make a 'Market Area' with non-permanent vendors."(1)
6.5 VOTES - HEALTH RELATED SPENDING:
"Doctor Recruitment"(1.25), "More Hospital Testing Equipment so we don't have to go out of town for tests so much"(1.75), "Lasers for skin tags"(2), "Accessibility issues"(.25), "Mental Health"(.25), "Urology"(.5), "CONFIDENTIAL meeting rooms at the hospital"(.5)
2 VOTES - SIDE STREET REPLACEMENT SPENDING:
""What they should do with the extra money then, is use it to pay the sewage charges and save every home-owner and business 50 to 100 bucks a month!!!!!!"(1), "I'm not against taxes. A lot of the side streets are really bad. They should use the money to fix them."(1)
4.5 VOTES - AFFORDABLE HOUSING SPENDING:
"More low cost housing"(1), "More geared to income housing"(2), "More Interim Seniors Residence spaces while you wait to get in to a Long Term Care Facitily"(1.5)
At the end of the day, however, 10 VOTES were logged from feedback providing taxpayers who simply wanted City Council to STOP MAKING US PAY the extra $1.1 Million dollars every year towards a Hospital that we've already finished paying for.
Here are a couple of the STOP MAKING US PAY comments:
"I vote to stop paying the tax to the hospital fund ."
"Our principled reps at the Council table should rescind all by laws regarding further collection of hospital contribution thru our property taxation system."
This concludes my research on what citizens want City Council to do with respect to this 2014 Budget 'Hospital Tax' Line Item.
If you didn't get a chance to provide your feedback on this 'Hospital Tax' issue, and still want to, I'm happy to hear from you about it at your convenience. You can contact me by leaving a comment here in the VRoom, or you can email me at:
I will now attempt to get our City Council to listen to what us brown bagging taxpayers want on this 'Hospital Tax' issue.
Anyhow, I'll see you BROWN BAGGERS around the lunch room :)

This relates to the conversation the other day or so about "perceptions"
and how people make lemonade out of lemons when a political figure says something.
New book: Obama told aides that drones make him 'really good at killing people'
"It’s the kind of quote likely to make Obama supporters cringe or scramble for justifying explanations, perhaps by rationalizing the quote as either false or out of context"
flyhawk25 11/5/2013 7:21:51 AM Report
MB...my initial comment regarding the tax surcharge was just that it must stop. Completely. If not the politicos will find a way to spend it.
Bad enough that we got stuck with a new hospital but to keep pumping money into something that is badly designed and top heavy with suits plays on all our insecurities about good healthcare.
So - stop collecting it starting asap and then begin a process to determine our city's priorities. There were some great suggestions you collected.
Why not compile a Wish List to give the budget committee and let them put them in priority order. Then have council vote on it and live with the choices.
It seems to me that we have a need and an obligation to refresh and renew our old areas. It isn't as glamorous as cutting ribbons and building new but unless we want to look like Detroit we'd better move on it.
Hundreds of families are buying older places, remodeling and creating lovely areas in our city.Seniors are trying to stay in their homes and don't need or deserve to be surrounded with decay and crime.
It's time to look at our city as one whole extended family, not just a vision of how we want it to expand.
We are closing neighborhood schools and pandering to the bus mentality and SUV caravans picking kids up. If we build strong established renewed neighborhoods we can slow the sprawl and have a vibrant mature core.
Great cities are pods of distinct neighborhoods under one municipal umbrella.Suburbs are miles of cookie cutters and lousy public transit.
So let's step back and ask ourselves if we want more asphalt and malls or do we want revitalized neighborhoods and distinct communities of like-minded families.
We are sitting on some 'natural gifts' and must start looking at using what we have and rebuilding. There's a lot to be said for stately tree lined streets with people interacting. And that does not happen overnight in a subdivision.

The city has a bid in the paper to purchase a new asphalt paver. (they are expensive). The paver goes with their paving crew, not the same as the concrete crew, or the tree cutting crew or the snow plowing crew. Others in the city with asphalt pavers .. Positano's, Rainone's, Palmer's, Avery, Pioneer, Elwood Robinson etc. I wonder if they'll drive it up to Rome's every lunch hour with the rest of the equipment.

I think I'm beginning to understand mayor Rob Ford.
In the end I think he will be undone by two flaws - his vanity and his ego.
Now he's challenging council members to get back to the city's work and saying that the video - which he previously said did not exist - be made public.
For the low info acolytes that might seem to be real leadership.
But the council is intent on keeping the good ship Taranna afloat. And Ford knows the police chief can't disclose the tape during a criminal investigation.
Give the guy credit for nerve. Then take it away for judgment.

I'm no fan of Rob Ford the person; but like a lot of what he's done with the previous horrendous state of Toronto's finances.
On the video issue - considering the media has been pretty much stalking Ford prior to and since he was elected; considering that every I-phone or similar device is a camera, and they're everywhere.....it is completely feasible that Ford did not know of this video. After all, there are probably thousands of video and photos that have been taken of him, that he is just not aware of.

I don;t understand why there aren't more charges pending against the 73 year old driver involved in the death of the Garden River man. I am glad that the native leaders are looking into this. I don't care whether he turned himself in or not he should have been charged with hit and run. His actions or lack thereof caused a young man's death.

How do you USE crack cocaine without possessing some?
Bill_the_Cat 11/5/2013 7:13:25 PM Report
debo: I wouldn't know. Perhaps someone else held the pipe?
I imagine Parliament in all its wisdom did not want to blanket criminalise people who have drugs in their system.
Scenario: I am a drug user with heroin in my system; I fall and crack my head, taking to ER and a standard blood test reveals drug use.
Am I to be arrested and charged? Certainly would clog the system more than it already is.
And would go against the policy of some provinces offering shoot-up sites and needles.

Batchewana leadership outraged by lack of charges
This is a very sad situation for all parties involved. I am sure everyone is finding it difficult to deal with. No one deserves to loose a loved one this way and wanting someone punished is a natural reaction. Looking from the outside in maybe the driver wasn't really responsible for the young man's death. If the young man was on the highway it would be like a deer bolting out in front of you. I am sure if it was murder the police would have charged him with such. Yes the man should be charged with what he was charged with as he left the crime. It is possible the driver never saw the young man until it was too late. Accidents do happen with not so great endings. I feel for both parties and what they must be going through but the evidence shows the driver wasn't at fault for the death. The young man shouldn't have been on the highway. My sympathies go out to you.

How about this scenario:
A person is shown smoking a crack pipe in a video. He eventually acknowledges his substance abuse as the facts are made clear.
He is not found out by some unrelated event or even necessary medical procedure. So he is the person who admits to possessing the drug.
BUT more to the point you have either not read my previous posts on this matter or chose to misinterpret them.
My "beef" was with the posters who attempted to trash the reporters of the event. The two reporters seemingly have done their jobs (as I previously stated) ... and reported what they saw. They reported truthfully and some of the "swampers" were at great pains to prove (WIDE use of the word here) otherwise and lacking proof they chose to attack. Whether they work for the Star or not the writers reported facts.
If you check you'll see that I never called for Mayor Ford's head (or any other part of his anatomy). But I did object to the attempt of some to pass off the event by smearing the messengers.

Are you kidding straw man, twenty seven people.
Straw polls provide dialogue among movements within large groups. In meetings subject to rules of order, impromptu straw polls often are taken to see if there is enough support for an idea to devote more meeting time to it, and (when not a secret ballot) for the attendees to see who is on which side of a question. However, Robert's Rules of Order prohibits straw polls, calling them "meaningless and dilatory" because they subvert the deliberative charge of deliberative bodies.

Funny, but Ford reminds me of every bully with power and money who ever pushed anyyone around. If you look at today's interviews he is a textbook case of that spoiled rich kid in school we all knew who picked on those smaller and weaker.
What I find really disconcerting is that so many people in Toronto still support him.
He is only a symptom of a larger malaise in our society.
He gets away with this bullshit because a whole pile of people live with the same sort of twisted moral compass that he follows.
Hunter101 11/5/2013 9:00:31 PM Report
fly, it's Toronto. People in that city are morons to begin with. He's a bada**, fly. People love that kinda stuff.
But let's play the devil's advocate here. Just because he has smoked a couple rocks here and there, doesn't mean he can't manage a city properly. It was the same with Clinton, except none of you lefties are talking about that one now. A guy cheats on his wife... he's an a**hole. Does that mean he is any better or worse at his job? Leave the social life out of it and look at what really counts. We've already established politicians have little moral character other than selling out for a vote. I would even go as far as saying Ford has more moral character than the rest.
Hmmmm, let's see, in order for someone to be in possession of crack, they have to have it on them when you arrest them. Otherwise it is heresy. Does that clear that up?
Hunter101 11/5/2013 9:04:06 PM Report

Obviously you meant "hearsay" not "heresy" . Learn to spell..it detracts from your brilliant exposition.
Hunter101 11/5/2013 9:57:37 PM Report
redranger, heresy has to do with believing. Look up the definition. I know what I posted. Saying he was in possession of crack is a belief, it cannot be proven.

redranger... i.e. that was not a spelling mistake. It's and actual word. Hope this helps as I can usually hear the grinding of those gears in your head from across town.

redranger 11/5/2013 10:19:12 PM Report
are you trying to claim that you actually meant heresy ..you meant hearsay. Which letter did you type incorrectly if it was a typo. No my friend ... either you spelled hearsay incorrectly or simply did not know what the heck it meant and thought heresy was the word you wanted. That would be even worse. Now go back and pick on someone you can handle.

redranger, my "typo" was referring to where I had typed "and" instead of "an."
And heresy refers to beliefs. It has several meanings, but here is one which applies.
heresy: an opinion, doctrine, or practice contrary to the truth or to generally accepted beliefs or standards.
Considering that I have read your posts and rudimentary errors such as forgetting to capitalize where necessary are littered throughout. You get a big fat "F" and you have to relinquish your privilege to criticize. You clearly don't know what you're talking about when it comes to grammar, comprehension, or composition.

All good ... no foul. I tended to believe the story for 2 reasons:
- Despite the obvious animus between the To Star and Mayor Ford ... the two reporters involved seemed credible ... and it would have been an insane risk on their part to manufacture it.
-Gawker though more of a splash media-type didn't have a dog in the fight and no reason to malign Ford.

I don't sweat punctuation or caps ( like e.e. cummings) but I spell correctly and use correct grammar. Also, my vocabulary is such that I do have to resort to outside sources and I use the appropriate word. If you look back, you will see that I was commending you on your posting with the caveat that the incorrect word marred it. However you took umbrage and away we went. No harm, no foul.
