THE BROWN BAG
Food for thought for the everyday and hardworking citizens of Sault Ste. Marie
Every year the CAO recommends a change to City Council about what he and his direct subordinates, our City's Senior Staff, think they require to keep the City of Sault Ste. Marie running smoothly for the next year.
The change that the CAO has recommended on behalf of Senior City Staff has always been an increase.
In 2014 the $1.1 Million dollars that we taxpayers have been paying towards the New Hospital will only require about $600,000 dollars to fulfil that commitment, so there will be approximately $500,000 that the CAO should recommend NOT BE COLLECTED from us taxpayers because the New Hospital Commitment will have been fulfilled.
What I need to know from you, my fellow BROWN BAGGING citizens of Sault Ste. Marie, is:
Is the $500,000 that WILL BE COLLECTED and spent by City Council if CAO Fratesi doesn't recommend anything about the return of that $500,000 to us citizens in 2014, and $1.1 Million dollars in 2015, and 2016, and ...
Is that worth mentioning that we want that New Hospital Collection of taxes STOPPED the second the New Hospital commitment is fulfilled around the middle of 2014?
Yes or No my fellow BROWN BAGGING taxpayers of SSM?
So far it's Yes-0 and No-1.
Let me know here in the View Room, or in the Cab, or at firstname.lastname@example.org
In any case, I'll see you BROWN BAGGERS around the Lunch Room :)

Ooops... Ignore my Yes or No vote above... it should actually have read the other way around.
Instead, consider this question:
Do you want to have City Council make us STOP PAYING for the new hospital once the commitment has been fulfilled in the middle of 2014, or do you want to CONTINE PAYING for the New Hospital after we have fulfilled our commitment?
So far it's STOP PAYING - 1, CONTINUE PAYING - 0

As for the Canada/EU deal recently tabled in the House of Commons, I still haven’t seen or heard a peep about it over here, although I’ll admit that I haven’t been carrying out what I would call a scientific study on the subject.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but was not the monies from the casino supposed to go toward the hospital funding, or has that money just disappeared into the "pot". I have had this discussion many times with people, the original idea was to refurbish the old hospital on site and the cost was about 45 mill then some bright spark came up with hows about a whole new hospital and the govt will fund more than the 70% it does for refurbishing. So they went with that idea at around 186 mill, but as time went by the cost was up to 250 and increasing, so they went to the new idea of lease to buy private/govt and the cost went to nearly 500mill, ah but that includes maintenance and I believe the final figure is nealy a billion at the end of the deal. And we still have, IMHO, once of the worst designed places you can imagine, unless of course you are in prime condition to walk the lengths of those corridors, especially if you are getting long in the tooth and distance walking is not your forte..

Harper's Senate scandal
I think Wisenheimer has finally got it. This whole thing is Harper's fault. When Harper was elected he was all piss and vinegar in going to reform the senate. He was going to see to it that individuals would only become senators after they had been elected in a provincial election. Pretty principled stuff. I think most of us wouldn't have a problem with that. Well it became a slog and after some early success the whole election thing got battered by some sticky wicket provinces who didn't want to play that game. Senate started to get a little rambunctious and got in the way of some legislation and Mr. Harper got impatient and needed to bolster the Conservative strength in the upper house. Out went the principles and in came the likes of Duffy and Wallin. It wasn't lost on Duffy that, since he didn't live in PEI, not a lot of weight was being given to those pesky "rules". Had Harper stuck to his principles he would not have made it possible to appoint senators whose primary residence was elsewhere than in the province they were appointed to represent. So, Wisenheimer, you are absolutely right, I'll repeat it,the whole thing is Harper's fault. Problem, Harper thinks it's everybody's fault but his own. That's leadership?

In the end Harris is gone and so will Ford be turfed.
Sadly the voters thought McGuinty was the anointed one.My friends in attendance at the Liberal convention called it on his shortcomings even before the election - but he was 'electable'. So we'll shuffle the deck chairs and try again.

That one was from P.E.I. and the other from the Prairies seemed apropos. Now that they may be really headed for the "big house' it turns out that they, like so many others in the political/media sphere, are presumptuous, elitists, that can't possibly survive without first class seating, and gold plated health care. Harper's choices could not have been worse. Serves him right for picking Senators from such a low branch.

Thanks for asking about the 'New Hospital Levy'. It is just that... a Levy that taxpayers have had to pay each and every year since it's introduction for the sole purpose of paying our property taxpayer, Liberal Party of Ontario MANDATED $30 Million dollar contribution to the New Sault Area Hospital, and...
The 'New Hospital Levy' will be coming to an end in the middle of 2014 because we will have paid the FULL $30 Million!
If you don't believe me, just ask the Sault Star because in 2010 they said:
"The key, he said, is to face this year's expenses and look beyond a one-year budget to the positives and negatives in the future... That includes a future end to the $1.1-million annual hospital levy"
Unless, and until, City Staff recommends that the 'New Hospital Levy' come to an end, City Council will use the $500,000 EXTRA that shouldn't be collected from taxpayers in 2014 for whatever vote-buying thing City Council wants to use it for.
So, what do you think mallet?
A) Should City Council STOP MAKING US PAY FOR A HOSPITAL THAT'S ALREADY PAID FOR in the middle of 2014, or
B) Should we taxpayers just keep on forking out $1.1 Million every year FOREVER for a hospital that's been fully paid for?
An answer would be nice.
You can even email your answer to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
