THE GOOD NEWS:
The prioritized feedback of the approximately 60 citizens (almost entirely comprised of business and building owners of the west side of Queen Street East and Gore Street) at the City Downtown Revitalization Open House hosted by Anna and Devon at their beautiful, clean and spacious Gallery/Meeting/Gathering Place at 180 Gore Street was:
Priority #1 - More Parking!!!
Priority #2 - Demolish the area and start from scratch!
Priority #3 - Make it a more pedestrian and bike friendly area by potentially adding a bike lane and widening the sidewalks.
Priority #4 - The media should stop making this area out to be such a crime infested place... it is actually a very quiet, calm and safe place to be twenty-four hours a day! We know, we live and work here.
Priority #5 - Shut up and drive (slowly) :)
Other very good news was that Planning Director McConnell was writing down all the feedback he received, for the consideration of City Council I hope, and Councillors Frank Fata, Rick Niro, and Lou Turco showed up to interact with the interested citizens and business and property owners, and the reason for the great turnout was because Planner Steven Turco went around to each west Queen Street and Gore Street businesses and hand delivered an invitation to the Managers of the businesses (according to Planning Diector McConnell).
I do have some controversial news, hard hitting questions and responses by Planning Staff to the priorities of the Open House feedbackers, but that will have 'till later because I don't want to be late for work.
Anyway, we'll see you BROWN BAGGERS around the lunchroom.

Harper has little to do with the scandal within the Senate. This has been brewing for a long time and he is the guy at the top when it exploded. Instead of going after the Harper government during this we as voters and taxpayers should be fighting to either abolish the senate or at the very least make them be elected. This has shown the corruption that happens when someone's job is pretty much guaranteed until the retire.
The big difference now with Harper is that his government has been caught in the cover up. I wonder how Martin, Trudeau Mulroney and the rest dealt with rogue senators during their time as Prime Minister.

I am not saying what he is accused of doing is false. My point is if he did what he is accused of doing or knowing, it is symptomatic of the bigger problem that is our senate. It is corrupt from the get go. A sitting PM appoints cronies that will vote with him instead of against him. How is that democratic or not going down a trail of corruption. Regardless of the party it is corrupt. And I would be willing to bet that PMO's throughout time have covered up bad choices and bad practices of "their" senators since the beginning of time. Not doing so would be foolish unfortunately, as having "their" senators being kicked out would not help "their" mandate being passed.

Bye, bye "Halloween"...say hello to "Black and Orange Day"
Some school boards in Ontario have decided that in order not to offend some groups, cultures, religions or a variety of "others" , that it would be appropriate to re-name and otherwise, neuter a tradition that has been with us for as long as I can remember.
Some schools are not allowing Halloween costumes in the classroom. The year's second-most anticipated holiday for the kiddies has been replaced by a non-offensive , made-up event.
The Toronto District School Board has a "resource" book on hot topics and issues that lists the reasons why Halloween should be universally shunned, although it is up to individual schools to make the call. Here are the reasons:
1. Halloween is offensive to Wiccans
2. Halloween peer and social pressure marginalizes some children
3. Halloween imagery is at odds with some religious practices
4. Halloween food products can conflict with family diets
5. Halloween symbols of violence can inflict trauma on children
6. Students new to Canada have no cultural knowledge of trick-or-treating
All of this seems silly and not worth getting upset about....but!
Nobody ever cared about "wiccans" or "Jehova's Witnesses" or "family diets" or what have you in the past.
But now we somehow must have to walk on eggshells around certain (CERTAIN) groups in order to not offend them!
God help us if we inadvertently say "Merry Christmas" on Christmas....I know ,I know...I am an atheist, so why should I care?
But I care because little by little our culture , our traditions are replaced, and renamed by some douchebag, granola eating, PC bureaucrat that thinks that any and all cultures should have their way as long as it is not European or otherwise a Western tradition.
Some women of a particular "faith" are allowed to walk around all year long in a Halloween costume, or are given a "women only swim at the "Y", but God help us if our kiddies want to dress up as Batman and stuff themselves with candy once a year!
I am all for inclusion to a certain degree, but "inclusion" should work both ways.
Some may say this is a non-event and that may be so, but we have gotten rid of the "God's Prayer" in our schools , as it should be, yet we have special rooms set up for Muslims in some Toronto schools .
Something "ain't" right here.

You are a true lefty...low information, throw out a statment and treat it as fact.
Regarding your 1.6 billion dollar claim.
Fact. Janssen president Chris Halyk, who also chairs the Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies, which represents more than 50 brand-name drug companies, believes there’s no evidence to show that’s the case.
“Canada has some tightly controlled pricing regimes as it relates to drug products, and subsequently as time moves forward, there should be no reason as to why drug prices would increase from the levels that we currently are at,” Halyk said in an interview.
Fact. The EU free trade agreement calls for extended patent protection of up to two years, if a particular drug faced regulatory and government approval delays. If drugs don’t face such delays, then the patent extension rule would not apply.
Fact. European pharmaceutical companies had sought longer patent protection, such as five years, but only got two years. As well, they didn’t get the extended data exclusivity they had sought — from the current eight years up to 11 years — which would have delayed generic companies from beginning work on replacement drugs.
Fact. The patent extension clause will only apply to new medicines approved after the trade agreement comes into force. Consumers likely won’t see any impact for eight to 10 years.
Fact. Prime Minister Stephen Harper acknowledged that concern when he announced the trade deal in Brussels on Friday, adding compensation to provinces may be considered.
Aidan Hollis, an economics professor at the University of Calgary, believes the EU trade deal will force provinces to get tougher in negotiations with drug companies, noting that many prescription drugs are cheaper in certain European countries.
“Provinces will negotiate hard, but some products may be excluded (from coverage),” Hollis said. Drug companies may be willing to negotiate on price over fears a certain medication won’t be covered at all, he added.
Halyk, of the brand-name drug companies, believes the trade agreement will pave the way for more innovation here.
“This is good for Canada. It enables us to become much more competitive with other countries around the world that currently have better intellectual property regimes,” he said.
That could mean a drug company based in Canada can draw more investment and research money from a global head office, he said.

My daughter just graduated from a local high school... in her 14 years (JK thru 12) her school has NEVER allowed Halloween costumes... not to be PC, not to be 'inclusive'. For most schools Halloween is just classroom time wasted.

Id like to see the Government try and close down both of these traditions and tell big stores like Walmart etc. not to sell these traditional wares, lol,, Of course they wouldn"t do that.. they would lose way too much tax $$ if they did. Sure are a greedy bunch!! Do i believe in Halloween now that i"m a Christian? No.. but i sure had fun with it when i was a kid and i"m not going to be the Grinch that would steal it from the wee ones now.... And i think,, just for kicks, I"m going to put up my Christmas tree this evening while i"m handing out candy!!

Halloween isn't disappearing, how can it? October 31st doesn't disappear. What's disappearing is the kids. When I was a kid every friend of mine had at least 3 siblings and some way more. Now families are smaller ergo less kids. It is not clear if Halloween is a festivity based on Christian belief to remember the deceased or a celtic celebration for the end of summer harvest. Most societies dating back millenia have celebrations for the end of harvest which include some mystic beliefs.

"topical news items, are largely ignored by a goodly number of the regular opiners. It's not that they are stupid but just ignorant. Ignorance is "lacking knowledge". "
There are some that just don't know what they don't know. Take, for instance, someone who, when putting a few bucks into the stock market, would believe that they are somehow creating jobs and otherwise stimulating the economy. Or how about this- "when TD splits shortly, buy a bunch from the co. through your IA or broker or website and catch the action on the TSX." When asked "what company?", no answer. Is it the "company store"? You remember " my eyes are dim I can not see, I have not brought my specs with me". Must be that company store. Like Bounder I don't appreciate name calling, it's not necessary. I have to say though, I loved your "divy". Too cute.

Bounder---Essar did not take anything away from you---that was Algoma Steel in 2001 with the vote of the majority of the workers who retired pre-2001.
If a lot of people vote no to Essar's Pension Relief # 2 a lot of people are going to lose a lot more than you did.
You will lose 50 % of your W.R.A.P. Plan but those who retired after 2001 and those who have yet to retire will lose 35 % of their total Pension--that could be as much as $ 1000 per month each for them.
Is that what you want because you are mad at the old Algoma Steel ?
Use a little reasoning in your decision.
Voting NO could bankrupt Essar but not voting at all is a YES vote and could help Essar to continue operating and nobody loses anything.

Christmas will always be Christmas.
At least for me.
'Happy Holidays' is a phrase used by idiot PC retailers and PC bureaucrats afraid that someone may get offended. No one is getting offended, no one has demanded Christmas 'go away'.
It is still Christmas. You can't change the day or pretend it isn't happening. Why would another religion 'get offended' at the phrase ? The only offence would happen if they were somehow forced to celebrate it, which they are not.
My Jewish and Muslim and Hindu friends have absolutely no problem calling me and wishing me Merry Christmas. It is, in fact, Christmas; just like Hanukkah is Hanukkah and Ramadhan is Ramadhan. They come to my house, break bread with us, and even exchange gifts.
It drives me nuts that the same retailers that must use 'Happy Holidays' freely bastardize Christmas and turn it into a shopping free-for-all in order to stuff their corporate pockets.

As of November 1, 2013 the character known as the Tooth Fairy will no longer be referred to by that nomenclature. In response to certain behavioral minorities who feel they are being unfairly targetted all beings placing a tooth under pillows hoping an exterior entity will exchange it for a monetary reward are directed to refer to said entity as Tooth Collector or some other acceptable label. Proper alternate suggestions are welcomed.

Unfortunately "Christmas" is now just another consumer driven day off. The original idea was perhaps good, but has now devolved into a period which many retailers depend on for the profits for the year. As some have already posted times have changed and the simple things which were of the norm for presents has now changed from a few pennies into the hundreds of dollars that are spent for "technical toys" many of which are broken or discarded in a few days or weeks. I know, I yearn for the simplier times, when life was not so fast, which is perhaps why I live way out in the boonies..

Here's an idea.
On Halloween adults should not be allowed to put on costumes and adopt another personna. And adults would be identified as anyone with external body hair other than what's on their head. If you get caught doing that you will be charged as a potential felon but instead of clogging up the courts and jails you must spend two days a week in a transgender outfit in a biker bar until next Halloween.
Back when I was growing up in the last century adults put their kids in costumes, kicked them out the door and gave out treats to neighbor kids. No one dressed up.
When you came home dad got first dibs on the good stuff guided by mother. Then you brushed your teeth, washed, said your prayers and tried not to puke.
Any adult dressing in a costume was considered goofy and they were to be avoided.
Now apparently weird is good, adults dress in all sorts and manners of costumes and the social order is in the toilet.
Join the move back to real family values, turn in weird adults and let kids be kids.
And adults can act like adults.

You do recall your comments at the time and your general slagging of the Toronto Star???
Apparently the reporters described what they saw TRUTHFULLY ... and they stood by their reporting. I think that's called integrity.
As I was catching up on the postings from the last couple of days I have to give you some CREDIT Oldie G ... you don't seem to be eagerly embracing our PM's version of the events surrounding the Senate imbroglio or trying to paint it as a leftist media plot. Only time and facts will enlighten us to the PM's involvement or non-involvement.
