THE GOOD NEWS:
You may have noticed significantly more Disabled Parking Spaces around town recently.
This past summer ( okay, so I'm not as current as I'd like to be :( ) "Good [summer] students for sure", according to one member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee, made site visits to 568 of the approximately 2000 Sault businesses in order to ensure there was Ministry Approved Disabled Parking Signage at each business.
The site visits resulted in 132 notices, signed by the Police, giving each business 45 days to provide parking spaces with Ministry Approved Signage or be fined. This resulted in no fines being issued and a "really cool" increase in parking spaces and Ministry Approved Signage!
Thanks, business owners, summer students and AAC members, for helping to make the lives of physically challenged Saultites a little easier. After all...
We're all in this together!
TODAY'S PUBLIC INFORMATION AND INPUT OPPORTUNITY:
Gore Street and west Queen Street East Commercial District Open House
Wednesday October 30th, 2013 - TODAY
180 Gore Street (180 Projects)
5 – 8 PM
Purpose: The City of Sault Ste. Marie is hosting a public open house TONIGHT to initiate discussions amongst area business and property owners, interested citizens and City Planning Staff on a DRAFT City Planning Department / Downtown Association proposed Downtown revitalization strategy.
I encourage all of you to come down to 180 Gore Street between 5:00 and 8:00 PM TONIGHT to provide your input on safety and streetscape improvements that you would like to see on Queen and Gore Streets.
The open house will encourage public input on the proposed Downtown revitalization strategy and highlight proposed financial incentive programs and potential streetscape improvements that cultivate a “sense of place” which will hopefully instil a feeling of safety, age-friendliness, and promote opportunities for social gathering and interaction. This sense of place is proposed to be achieved through targeted investments in streetscape amenities such as boulevard improvements, furniture, plantings and waste receptacles.
I, Mark Brown, will be attending this Public Input Session and providing my input on the SAFTEY aspects of the proposed plan, and potential HOMELESS PERSON STREETSCAPE INFRASTRUCTURE additions to the proposed plan.
If you cannot attend the meeting and would like to provide input contact me, with your input, at firstname.lastname@example.org and I am happy to submit it for you. Also, please let me know if you would like to have your input provided anonymously.
The PROPOSED Plan:
Streetscape Design Guidelines:
Anyway, I'll see you BROWN BAGGERS around the lunch room :)

That's great Mark, now if this city would hire bi-law officers to enforce the usage of these parking spaces. Perhaps the people that like to park along the fire lane in front of stores because either them or their spouses are too lazy to park and walk an extra 20 feet can use a ticket or two for blocking a fire lane and creating a general hazzard.

Will Nigel Wright fight back, the latest victim of Harper's denials and passing the buck. Terrible leader (Harper)....everyone else, except for him, is responsible for this mess, according to him.
Now we hear the Senate is going to soften their attacks on the 3 Senators. Might as well; nothing else is working. Trying to salvage their upcoming convention.
Let's see what the Duffster's got up his sleeve today.

Mallet---Yes the Stelco Shareholders approved the sale---but before the sale to a foreign country could happen the Government has to approve it.
U.S. Steel promised to keep it operating and shortly after they bought they started shutting down portions of it-----and selling their Steel from Pittsburgh to Stelco customers.
In my opinion, it was a case of buying out the competition---similar to what Dofasco did to Algoma Steel years ago.
Of course I don't expect any Company to continue operating a losing cause but look at why Stelco became a losing cause and, in my opinion, U.S. Steel was the main cause of Stelco's decline.

The Conservatives are doing the best job of corralling their supporters. Current polls put the party around 35 per cent, suggesting about 78 per cent of Canadians who would consider voting Conservative are already giving them their support. The New Democrats currently have the support of only 57 per cent of those who might vote for them, while the Liberals have less than half.

MB...regarding the handicapped signage.I was on the forerunner of that committee and the biggest problem has always been 'the culture of ignorance'. Sadly, people who have not had a need for them touch their lives just don't give it much thought.
Generally once they understand for the need and compliance most folks are very good. It's been a slow process.
One example was city hall. They did not have braille signs in the elevators.Once it was pointed out to them they were quick to change.
In my opinion one of the worst parking set-ups is the new SAH.The next time you are in the parking lot look at the lack of handicapped spaces close to the door. In a hospital of all places.
Ironically Rome's is much easier.
And really look at Queen St. and the snow bank issue at meters. And then start checking on washrooms in public places. There are very specific rules and many owners just don't understand the need.
But with an aging population with improved technologies more people are able to be more independent. However all it takes is a few idiots in electric carts on public streets to undo much work and goodwill for the rest.
In time things will change as people become more aware.
right wing 10/30/2013 9:01:16 AM Report

And now, more than ever, I think you shoul be on City Council fly!
flyhawk25 10/30/2013 9:48:30 AM Report
No apology on my part.
If someone in an electric cart/wheelchair is driving on the road they are idiots.
I'm not talking about crossing at lights or corners. I refer to riding on the road instead of the sidewalk. They are not licensed and are breaking the law.
Do you realize how much time, expense and effort it took to put ramps at all curbs on corners?
I do. My wife was in an electric wheelchair for nine years and I know the drill.
But the few fools who do not comply should not ruin it for the rest.
And as for braille on drive-thrus? Simple answer. It makes no economical sense to make two kinds. If you have sight just ignore the braille. And don't forget the folks who have visual problems and find it easier to sometimes access bank machines in non-traditional places.
Spellchecker 10/30/2013 10:00:10 AM Report
You don't necessarily drive up to a drive thru banking machine. They are accessible on foot and I use one that way quite often.

But it does speak to that ignorance of which I spoke. No bad intentions - many folks just don't understand.
I can tell you from experience. I tried occasionally to manipulate my wife's chair when she was in bed or whatever. Damn near killed myself. But she could make that thing dance. In fact she sometimes did at weddings. I suppose I would have learned eventually but so far I've never had to.
Out of curiosity. Has anyone criticized you for walking up to a drive-thru?
gcubed 10/30/2013 10:19:43 AM Report
Fly: Some vehicles are not the correct height for the drive-through ATMs. When I had my larger van, I would have to park and walk over to the machine. I am referring to those machines that are not at a place where there is another inside, such as Tim Horton's at Pine & McNabb.
Spellchecker 10/30/2013 10:34:10 AM Report

Where are the shop owners supposed to put the snow, if they "clear away the snow banks" in front of their shop?
The options are either to put it back on the road, push it in to parking spots, or push it in front of the stores beside you. Or, I guess, carry it by the shovel full through the shop and dump it out the back somewhere.
I see shop owners all the time cleaning the area in front of there stores, but the places to put it are very limited. Thus, snow banks.

I think there were a few more reasons than buying out the competition, my memory plays tricks at time but I think that both companies, (Stelco and Dofasco) wanted to rebuild or build new blast furnaces and there was no room to build new and at the time it would have meant a long period of downtime for a rebuild of the ones they had. I am not going to dispute that there was an ulterior motive for U S Steel to buy out the competition but I think the government got some money out of the deal and a lot of the people working got reasonable compensation too, of course there are always those that any amount is not enough. As for Dofasco buying ASC I think at the time they needed the extra capacity and ran ASC into the ground and then flogged it off for as much as they could get for it, as I said the memory plays trick but didn't it go to an employee buyout and loans from the province etcetc..

cathyh 10/30/2013 11:23:10 AM Report
I can think of a couple of ways to get rid of the snow. The city installed the parking meters and they could make them accessible by shoveling the snow out and using a payloader to dump it into a truck. When the shop owner sees it is becoming a problem they could shovel it themselves and then call the city to haul the snow away just like the owner of the Man Store on Queen does.

Tom Spears, a journalist with the Ottawa Citizen, called the National Research Council for some basic information about a joint Canada/U.S. study on snowfall patterns. While he was able to speak with a NASA scientist and get the information he needed in 15 minutes, the response from Canada came a day after his deadline because it was delayed by 11 employees sending over 50 emails discussing whether they should give him an interview and what the “tone” of his request was;
Canadian scientists at the International Polar Year 2012 conference were told, if approached by journalists, to “ask them for their business card and tell them you will get back to them with a time for [an] interview.” Media relations employees also followed Canadian government scientists to monitor and record their conversations;
David Tarasick was prevented from speaking about his research titled “Unprecedented Arctic ozone loss in 2011″ for two weeks after the report was released;
Scientists attending the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry 32nd annual meeting were given a “Q&A Package” containing 20 expected questions and the answers to be given by designated spokespersons as well as directions to respond to some questions with “I am a scientist. I’m not in a position to answer that question, but I’d be happy to refer you to the appropriate spokesperson.”

I am particularly fond of that one.....
"Media relations employees also followed Canadian government scientists to monitor and record their conversations;"
Does that sound a bit like North Korea?

I'm loving it!
I've got stats googling....and he came up with a bunch of old crap that has more stink on it than what he claims Harper has.
Little bit harder than making up road kill recipes and trashing God eh stats...muzzling scientists...care to try again.

Headline in that Liberal rag,the Toronto Sun
"House of the whopper: PM has spun such a web of deceit he should resign or be dismissed"
Seems you are a dyeing breed--a Harper sycophant

Care tor try again?
Why do I need to?
You're out of your element rw. You're not dealing with eversons or TP.
right wing 10/30/2013 9:05:29 PM Report
Well that's that then, John Robson said so....yes it not great that the Toronto Sun allows for views on both sides of the fence and has Liberal commentators.

stats...I'm trembling at your intellect, I know you are a legend in your own mind.

David Spewzuki is claiming that Harper is flying by his house in the Batplane and shooting lasers at his tinfoil hat.

I wish I could train you to think clearly, like one trains a dog but I am quickly coming to the realization that if you were a dog I would have to take you to the Humane Society.
Harper is lying !!....if you cannot see that then I see no use discussing anything further.
ALL politicians lie!! Left...right...communists, fascists, democrats, republicans, liberals, conservatives.
It's in their genetic make up, if they weren't liars then they would never be elected!!
The difference is what are they lying about and to what end....the end often times (not always) does indeed justify the means...ask Machiavelli, he knew a thing or two about politics.
In this instance Harper lied to further his own personal vision of Canada and it is not my vision along with 60% of my fellow Canadian compatriots!
statusquo 10/30/2013 9:11:18 PM Report
Steelworker's last comment proves, beyond a doubt, that something is sorely amiss in the conservative mindset .
Sorry, amiss in the set, as the mind does not appear to play a role.
right wing 10/30/2013 9:12:33 PM Report
Why do you need to.
You don't stats, you can do like all the other Libs on here.
Throw out bullshit statements, never back anything up and walk away feeling absolutely brilliant.
Whatever floats your boat.
Have a great evening...I have to go and do something Liberal like look through a kaleidoscope and paint some pictures of unicorns....
right wing 10/30/2013 9:15:53 PM Report
...one last thing stats.
When it is proven by solid evidence, not liberal low information ranting posters (like yourself) on this site, or the MSM Harper haters...but by a completed investigation that PROVES these allegations than I will be the first to agree with you.

Now you're starting to sound like Harper. I backed EVERything up!
You're just lost and confused and throw around your usual righy lefty bullshit ad nauseam because you're out of ammunition and you know it. Give up while your slightly behind.
You don't have nothing to back you up and the help from "steelworker" is like somebody throwing you a brick while you're drowning!

Soon you are going to be alone on the deck proclaiming the sanctity of Stevie Your final words will be "Glub,Glub" as the rotted scow sinks below the waves of the Fake Lake that Harpo built for the G-20 summit

BIG BROTHER 10/30/2013 9:30:57 PM Report
Nothing has been proven re. the 3 Senators, but you are quite ready to throw them under the bus to help Stevie out.
Harper is in this over his head, but denial is a very strong compulsion.
right wing 10/30/2013 9:31:39 PM Report
I keep hearing how the true conservatives are jumping ship yet all polls show that a very high percentage of the base will vote conservative again.
Going to be a real bummer for the libs when they get re-elected...with or without Harper.
right wing 10/30/2013 9:33:31 PM Report
Really...I've actually said very little about the three Senators.
...but that's O.K. B.B., like a true lib you can just throw out the "truth" like a game of twister.
BIG BROTHER 10/30/2013 9:39:49 PM Report
Very little doesn't equate to 'nada'...you've said plenty about the dastardly trio. (There's that denial, kicking in again)
The statement about the base is true, so keep up the good work, follow the crowd and you can say 'I stayed loyal' to the bitter end.
statusquo 10/30/2013 10:02:21 PM Report
"very high percentage of the base will vote conservative again."
A very high percentage shop at Walmart, think that Miley Cirus is talented and believe in God....what does that tell you?
Hunter101 10/30/2013 10:25:25 PM Report
It tells me that since they like shopping at walmart, probably poor and lack class or standards. Likewise if they listen to Miley. That also tells me most of those people will more than likely vote NDP.
Hunter101 10/30/2013 10:27:14 PM Report
And if you wanted to know, I parttake in none of these three and I will vote Conservative.
Grump 10/30/2013 10:33:05 PM Report
Sheesh I just read the last posts for the evening. Harper is such a manager that he can't even keep a couple of his own made up stories straight. Steely is a grade A moron (probably drools) but you rw I sure as hell have no idea what the hell your problem is but you certainly have one. Hang in there because when Harper does go down you will certainly look like one of the largest fools of all time and it is your choice. Carry on pal.
Mr. Poster 10/30/2013 11:19:00 PM Report
The Harper cons have to go. It is pretty sad when our 3 disgraced senators have managed to so far work a deal where they can keep their benefits..both Wallin and Duffy have health issues. They should have though of that before they stole FROM US.At the same time the govt is given out discharge papers to those soldiers who served us and are nearing their 10 years. If they release them before they hit 10 years they do not have to pay benefits. TRULY DISGUSTING TACTICS..bye bye HARPER.
