Good morning Spellchecker, and good morning all (ey,skipperdave),
A couple of things from the City Council Agenda which caught my eye:
1.) Did you know that you can get City Council to grant you permission to have a contractor go onto your neighbour's LAND to fix something on your property... even if your neighbour doesn't want you to? Well, they can. (see details below)
2.) Our City Council ( http://tinyurl.com/SSMCityCouncil ) will be embarking on an ambitious Downtown Community Improvement Plan to transform and revitalize the ENTIRE Downtown from the 'Canal District' right through to the old SAH which will cost us taxpayers $2.535 Million dollars PLUS untold millions in property tax rebates. It is a very good plan, IMHO, but I have a couple of specific concerns which I will bring up at the, yet to be announced, Public Input Session(s).
3.) Woohoo, the City's Engineering department will be doing the engineering work for... LONDON STREET!!! Finalmente!!!
4.) Ward 1 Councillors Christian and Butland have graciously put forward a Motion to investigate putting a, "splash park in one of our City parks". Very nice, gentlemen, but where were you between 2010 and 2012 when this group: https://www.facebook.com/SaultSteMarieSplashPad , was clamouring for a splash pad?
Oh, I forgot. 2014 is an election year.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
DETAILS of how you can get City Council to give you access to your neighbour's property so that you can fix something on your property:
"Attached to this report is Section 132(1) & (2) of the Municipal Act, 2001 which gives authority to City Council to authorize the owner or occupant of land to enter adjoining land, at reasonable times and under conditions that Council may consider advisable, for the purposes of maintaining a building or structure on the land of the owner or occupant. Section 132 specifically states that such entry onto adjoining land is only to the "extent necessary to carry out the repairs or alterations".
The concerns raised by Mr. Zielke are adequately addressed by Section 132 (I&) (2) of the Municipal Act, 2007. Specifically, the Contractor would only be permitted to enter upon the adjoining land only "to the extent necessary to carry out the repairs or alterations" and therefore the Contractor is not permitted access to the entirety of the adjoining land. In this case, the Contractor has requested access to a distance of ten (10') feet from the property line onto the Zielke Property to complete the maintenance. Further, the City may impose time frames for completion of the work undertaken by the Contractor. The Contractor estimates that it will take one (1) day to complete the maintenance of the retaining wall. Given various contingencies that may arise in construction (ie. weather, illness, construction materials, time) the by-law for consideration by Council provides the Contractor with two (2) weeks from the date of passing of the by-law to complete the requested maintenance. This time limit ends upon the completion of the requested work.
Further, Section 132(2)(5) requires Mr. and Mrs. Renault to restore the Zielke Property to its original condition and provide compensation for any damages caused by the entry onto the adjoining lands. This is outlined in the by-law presented to Council."

Yes "they" can't have it both ways.
A recent Bloomberg survey found that 40 percent blame the GOP for what’s wrong in Washington, while 38 percent blame the president and congressional Democrats. Back in February, Obama had a nine-point edge over Republicans and independents were evenly divided over who was responsible. Now, 42 percent of independents fault with Obama and his allies in Congress, while 34 percent blame Republicans on Capitol Hill.
The latest CNN poll found a similar trend, with the percentage who blame congressional Republicans for a government shutdown down five points and the percent who blame Obama up three points.

Polls aside, since it's 2 years until the next election, why not just wait and see who caves on this.
If you notice, Boehner and friends have now switched gears on their attack.
Now that it's obvious that the president isn't moving on healthcare they have to find a new song sheet.
In the meantime real people are suffering real hardships over the federal shut down.
Will they and their families and friends blame President Obama or the Republicans?
So I'll make a prediction.
In the next election the Republican reps will get steamrolled and in two years after that when the dust settles from another GOP finally wades through the clown parade of candidates and picks a nominee the Dems will win again.
Voters aren't stupid but they are myopic. If the Republicans don't run a moderate they will never beat whoever the Dems nominate.
And John Boehner will join their last speaker Newt Gingrich as a talking head on Fox News.

Comments regarding OLG Privatization by city official
Dodds says Sault Ste. Marie initially tried to make the best of OLG’s urge to privatize. Boosters pointed out the advantages of keeping a full-scale head office — whether public or private — in the city.
But over time, he says, the Soo side realized that the real problem it faced was privatization itself. Wynne has promised that the gambling authority’s head office of record will stay in Sault Ste. Marie. But neither she nor anyone else in government has been willing to say how many real head-office jobs will remain

DE GUSTIBUS NON EST DISPUTANDUM.
What qualifies as news is obviously a question of personal taste. Take Jaqueline Kennedy, who was constantly pursued by paperazzi during the presidential tenure of her husband.
On one occasion when she was out riding her horse, she attempted to have him leap over a small obstacle and was thrown by him. A photographer on the spot recorded this historic event for posterity, Jaqueline was furious, and telephoned her husband to complain. The President , who was in the midst of a Cabinet meeting, heard her out politely and remarked “Look at it this way, Jackie. If the First Lady falls on her ass, that’s news!”

He believes he will be home in a week or so. We had a great gab and he says he will now keep those lunch dates when he is home. The better half and the kids showed up so I left so they can have a visit. He made me promise to bring Suzie and come back tomorrow which we will try to do. He was very moved when I told him everyone was rooting for him. He was also happy to hear his boat was on dry land for the winter.

reality: Many departments are 'furloughed'--that means still being paid. Just not doing anything....well less than they normally do. (Think no emails). As always, it is the lowest tier per hour worker (parks workers, concessions, etc...) that get screwed. The salaried employees are largely immune.
All of my US counterparts are working, and getting paid.
Although, as I said before, you'd be amazed at what is classed 'essential service'.

Prometheus 10/5/2013 1:02:36 PM Report
Personnel furloughed under the US government shutdown are not being paid, nor are they working. They had to come into their place of employment to sign furlough appears and were then sent home.
Essential personnel are working but are not being paid either.
The main difference is that by existing law, essential workers will get back pay once a budget bill or a continuing resolution is passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President.
Furloughed workers will only receive back pay if special legislation is passed and signed into law. In previous cases of government shutdown, Congress has passed the legislation necessary to provide back pay to furloughed workers. Both houses of Congress are working on the required legislation now in the event a settlement to the standoff is reached.
While lack of a pay cheque adversely affects the public sector workers, they at least have a light at the end of tunnel. The people being hurt the most by the intransigence of both political parties are not the civil service but private sector workers that rely on government funded activities for their income. Think of people like National Park concessionaires, or workers that operate coffee shops in government buildings, etc.

"reality: Many departments are 'furloughed'--that means still being paid. Just not doing anything....well less than they normally do."
From the following below, which is from the Washington Post, it doesn't seem that being furloughed means you continue to get paid. Otherwise why would this bill have to be passed? The story goes on to say that the president and Senate will approve the bill.
Jeff Simon 12:36 PM ET
The Republican-run House unanimously approves a measure to give 800,000 furloughed workers retroactive pay once the government shutdown is over.
