I see signs on the highway telling me that it is against the law to transport wood from one place to the next.Yet I look around and I see trainloads and logging trucks transporting logs from the bush to god knows where.
What is a guy with a fireplace supposed to do? Grow his firewood in the back yard maybe?

Good morning all,
Yesterday I was telling a sight-impaired taxi patron about the Public Library Board meeting about the soon to be announced "downloadable music for library card holders", and the "Food for Fines" program that will be running during Library Week (Oct. 20-26) which allows library card holders to wipe out their fines by donating cans of food to local food banks, and she seemed unimpressed.
But my patron had a concern with the Library that she asked me to write down and pass on to the Library Board.
Before I do, I'm wondering what you folks think.
Here's what she asked me to write down:
"1. Can we please get more DAISY BOOK PLAYERS for blind and visually impaired persons [because the ones the library does have are always signed out, and some people cannot afford DAISY BOOK PLAYERS of their own].
2. Can you please get a 'Screen Reader' for 'Jaws' to make computers [in the library] accessible. There was one available before [but it is no longer available for some reason]."
What are your thoughts people?

Good morning, everyone.
Today I pick up Sault Ste. Marie's newest citizens at the airport. My two sons arrive from Myanmar/Thailand today to begin their new life as Canadians.
They have a very full plate. I don't think we realize how much of a culture shock it is for non-europeans to immigrate here.
Consider this .....
These particular boys...
.....had never sat in a chair or eaten at a table.
.....had never been in a car.
..... never slept in a bed.
.....never watched TV
..... never used a computer.
...... never used a phone.
...... never used a stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer , dryer.
....... never used indoor plumbing or running water.
It is my wife and myself's job and privilege to start them on their Canadian journey.
I can't wait to see the look on the face of the b*t*h at ServiceOntario when I apply for their Health cards. Last year, when she saw my African son's name, she commented "What kind of name is that !?!" and proceeded to deny his health card application "...until he got a normal name". Needless to say, her supervisor was called and the mess straightened out.
People from Myanmar don't have last names, so she should have a similar tantrum this year.
Anyways, please wish us luck. Pray for us or at least send some good vibes in our general direction.

That is what some posters here beleive and have posted about....hence my current negative opinion of them and my current vemomous battle. Attitudes like they have are the seeds of hatred and evil, yet they rationalize and justify their position and they even muster support of others that feel comment like their's are harmless. Big Brother---This area WAS designated as one needing French Language Services from the Provincial Government under the Act. So much for your reading of the Act.
The Act also stated that any Municipality could decide whether they would give Services in French or English or both.
Our City Council chose to give Services in English only. Well within the rules of the Act.
Several other Municipalities in Ontario also opted to give Services in English only---we were not the only ones as some people in Ontario were led to believe by the Media.
You can use the rules of the Act any way you want but our Council acted appropriately under the rules of the Act and could, legally, refuse to change even when the Courts decided against them.
The Court ruling had no teeth because it did not force any Municipality to change any Resolutions.
If any damage to our reputation was done, as you stated, it was short lived.
We just had a Football Team from Montreal gladly come to the Soo to play for the Northern Football Championship and they were welcomed with open arms---and they beat the Soo also.
Several Teams willingly came here from Quebec last year to play in the C.A.R.H.A. Hockey Tournament and they were welcomed with open arms and they said that they enjoyed their stay here for a week.
Now, maybe, you should " cease and desist "

There was no mandate placed on SSM to provide services in French. There was also no groups asking for such services. This whole petition 'thing' was brought to you by SAPLER, a well known, anti french, group of bigots. If the Provincial Government of the day required SSM to provide said services, they would be there now. The Municipal Government does not have the power nor the mandate to tell the Provincials what they are going to do.
Look a little deeper. There were some very self-serving people pushing this populist 'petition' for their own political vendetta. You, sir, were duped. You expressed very bigoted opinions in signing that petition, whether you want to believe it or not. SSM paid a dear price, in terms of 'one more hokey' decision. Big Brother===I NEVER said that the Sault was being forced to provide Services in French--I said that this area was designated as an area for the Ontario Government to supply Services in French and English.
Every Municipality had the option to supply their Services in French or English or both under the French Language Services Act---Our City decided to supply their Services in English only and so our City Council was given a Petition signed by 25,000 legitimate voters to supply City Services in English only and they passed a Resolution saying that.
The Resolution did not violate the French Language Services Act of Ontario and was not illegal either.
Whether it was necessary or not to pass that Resolution is in the mind of the beholder. Our Council did it and so did several other Municipalities in Ontario.
In my opinion this issue was blown completely out of proportion by the Media and some people in this area who thought it was a terrible thing to do and who claimed that SAPLER were a bunch of Bigots.
Do you believe that 25,000 voters in our City were a bunch of Bigots ? or did they simply ask Council to choose to supply the City's Services in English only as the Ontario French Language Services Act allowed each Municipal Council to choose what they would do.
The French Language Services Act passed by the Ontario Liberal Government prompted Municipalities to make a response if they chose to do so.
In my opinion, the Ontario Government was wrong to even ask Municipalities what to do as part of the Act.
They have to carry some responsibility for bringing forth the issue.
It would be quite a statement if anyone were to call 25,000 Citizens Bigots !

But if you haven;t figured out that this topic, du jour is no longer relevant to our reality not to mention dead, dead, dead the only ones keeping the discrimination and bigotry are posting on this site. If this topic still stirs emotion take a cold shower and get over it!!
If you are still horned up and the water doesn't shrink your shmenkl why don't you post about the CAO affair...you may have some place to hang your towel!!!
My advise....no one really gives a crap about that either! Both topics are flat out crapped out! Move on!

"Do you believe that 25,000 voters in our City were a bunch of Bigots ? or did they simply ask Council to choose to supply the City's Services in English only as the Ontario French Language Services Act allowed each Municipal Council to choose what they would do."
Many were bigots, many were stupid, many just signed the petition without reading it, many didn't have a clue what it was about, some signed several times, some signed for others. You obviously were in favour. Good for you. Wear the title proudly. But it remains it was an unnecessary resolution that made our community look bad across the nation. Thunder Bay, a town near Kingston and Tarbutt and Tarbutt Additional in this area were the others that passed such a resolution. I believe Tarbutt was either first or second. The Sault was the first major centre to do so. Thunder Bay followed. SAPELR is the acronym for the Sault Ste. Marie Association for the Preservation of English Language Rights. Municipalities were excluded from Bill 8, which all three parties in the legislature supported.

You sure have your knickers in a knot. Been a rough day on the blog eh?!!
Like you and many others have stated Gracie...if you don't like the topic, scroll on by. In the meantime, get off your high horse. You are a one trick pony with a cheer-leading squad of one. Your opinions are simplistic; laced with lefty-righty crap, sorely lacking in substance. As a matter of fact, I think you've finally hit on something of substance to say.

The English language resolution was unnecessary and accomplished exactly zero, zip, nada, dick, squat, nuttin. All it did was hurt a lot of people. For what??So, right on and amen BB for your posts at 7:28 and 7:34
Did anybody see how in recent days, after 128 years or so,the bell of Batoche, dubbed the "Marie Antoinette" has finally been returned to it's rightful home.A truly remarkable and heart warming story IMO.But I bet it would just drive the SAPLER types more around the bend than they already are.
Tried and hung for treason.

Grace, get a job...or a hobby. But your life is wasting away, whilst you defend Harper, slam the pretty one and attempt to control who can say what on 'your' blog!! Sadly, you think you're funny. RW will now enter and congratulate you and that will complete the circle. Still lacking substance though.

Does ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ mean the same in French as it does in English?
BIG BROTHER 9/18/2013 9:40:40 PM Report
According to some, it's an old story. I recall hearing in grade 3 Social Studies how Louis Riel was a wild man...half native and half french. I find out later, when the history books are written without a slant, that he was highly educated and was actually beating Sir John A. at his own game.
Interesting story about the Bell of Batoche.

Reality Check---Wow--If I ever need someone to read my mind I will call you---You think that you can read the minds of 25,000 people---Why do you waste your time posting on here when you could make about $ 400,000 a year as a Psychiatrist.
Many who signed the Petition knew exactly what they were doing and they were not stupid as you say they were and they were not Bigots.
Were all the Councillors and the Mayor all stupid bigots too ?
You are sorry case if that is what you believe about many of your friends and neighbours.
However I must bow to your superior insight in to 25,000 people's thoughts.
By the way, you will never know if I signed or not so you can't read my mind.

sparks7 9/18/2013 11:31:35 PM Report
After your last post I have to tell you this.I signed that damn petition.A neighbor came over with it.It was a knee jerk reaction on my part to bill 101 which had recently been passed in Quebec and which I thought was wrong at the time.I had no idea of what the ramifications might be of what I was signing. And he was such a nice neighbor! All I can say now is that it was a terrible mistake on my part to have signed that piece of garbage and it was not long after that I regretted it deeply.Good friendships became strained as a result of that fiasco.
