Good morning sweet Soo! Hey Mark Brown I find you fascinating.
time for story telling triggered by the anticipation of seeing Spelly's black VW beetle at lunch. Back in the seventies we had on our construction crew a very Germanic gentleman who wouldn't shut up about the engineering planning that went into the production of his VW beetles, yes he had two, a his and hers. We all stayed in the same compound and the rest of us got sick and tired of listening to the accolades. Every night on a rotational basis we all would take turns topping up his gas tank with a mason jar of petrol. he went strangely silent for about a week and no he was never enlightened.

So what do they focus on? Trudeau's stance on marijuana. Wow. The economy is in the tank, and Canadians are divided east to west like never before and they are worried about a school teacher who thinks grass is a non-issue.
Yup. Makes perfect sense - in their alternate universe.

What do you base your belief on that the Syrians will give up the chemical weapons.
Pretty much every weapons expert that has rang in on this has stated that even if there was not a civil war going on, which there is, that disposing of these weapons is a huge undertaking.
One that most certainly cannot be done during a civil war.
Chemical weapons are not just thrown into some trash cans and left at the curb.
That alone makes the Russians proposal a completely empty plan.
The Russians have supplied the Syrians with some very recent state of the art anti-aircraft technology along with some nifty targeting toys for navel ships.
The Russians had threatened the U.S. that if they struck at Syria they would further arm Syria.
Sorry shakey, we can certainly agree to disagree on this one.

Obama has quivered and I honestly don't believe that he had a strategic plan. However, for Putin to continue to be odorously appropriate, the chemical weapons must all go. My point is ( and I don't know if this is by chance or design) Obama seems to have done the right thing. If he had gone in gung-ho or even with pin-pricks, it would be seen as an act of aggression and Iran might have been brought in. I like to read and watch a lot on this, but what is clear to me is that, apart from the thick-headed unithinkers (the sources that Spelly subscribes to)there is a lot of complexity to the situation. Obama made this closing statement in his messy speech.
"What kind of world will we live in if the United States of America sees a dictator brazenly violate international law with poison gas and we choose to look the other way? ... Terrible things happen across the globe, and it is beyond our means to right every wrong. But when, with modest effort and risk, we can stop children from being gassed to death and thereby make our own children safer over the long run, I believe we should act. That's what makes America different. That's what makes us exceptional."
So what mades them exceptional, bowing out to Russia and Putin.
Obama is looking the other way, anyway he can to get out of his botched handling of this entire mess.
Putin used the New York times to state that Obama has no business thinking the U.S. is exceptional.
IMO even a pin prick strike would have been more effective in the long run.

To even think that the West can do anything to alleviate the situation, other than opening the flood gates to immigration, so that the people that have had enough of this crap can come and have a life here .
To intervene in Syria means we have to intervene in the Congo, the Sudan, Somalia, Burma, Saudi Arabia etc., all are countries were people are raped, killed, tortured.....it is the same thing as being killed by chemical weapons....actually...maybe even worse!

Well it's late and I'll give in to this cheap shot.
I have a tee-shirt that says 'I Invented the Swamp Before They Knew Their Toes Were Webbed'.
I'm thinking of sending one to my man Barack. Unfortunately he doesn't care what comes out of this place.

The ideals of democracy are so appealing to citizens around the world, that many have sacrificed their livelihoods, even their lives for it.
It is a good thing that your view of "do nothing cause it can't be fixed" is a pin prick of an ideology or all those countries throughout history that pulled themselves out of the pit would still be where they are.

fly: If there is no widening of the conflict...then the American people won't care. The middle east will say a quagmire. To quote Carville (who may be quoting someone else): 'It's the economy, stupid.' If Obamacare is anywhere near a success, Obama will go down as a great president.
I maintain that Obama is law-school smart, not realpolitik smart. As POTUS, I certainly hope his administration has many good days--bad days have a ripple effect throughout the West.
Putin's NYT OpEd was a resounding coup-de-grace politically--and completely unprecedented. He castrated US foreign policy quite effectively.
