Good morning all, take heart as it's going to warm up again and the weekend is upon us. Learning by the time the election is called the stink will be so bad from the Senate that Harper couldn't get elected door man at a skunk convention. LMAO. Have a great say everyone. (even the swampers)
Mr. Poster 8/16/2013 6:51:44 AM Report
It was mentioned in last nights late news that they have decided to look at all senators spending. I suspect we will see more senators repaying us taxpayers AND STILL KEEPING THEIR REVERED POSITIONS.
Oldie Goldie 8/16/2013 8:09:02 AM Report
In my opinion--If I steal from my employer and even if I paid it back I would not get my job back with that same employer unless he is an absolute fool.
Only in government positions are they allowed to do that---and with taxpayers money !
Time for the taxpayers to change the System !
Mr. Poster 8/16/2013 8:30:31 AM Report
How can one be an honourable senator after stealing from taxpayers ? Paying it back is not enough.

Good morning...Wonder how much bigger the dog and pony show at the senate will get as the net begins to spread.
My prediction Libs and Cons may have something in common.

Sadly it is human nature that when we are placed in an elevated position like the Senate with little or no checks and balances bad things happen.
Like most Canadians I have no idea what they do.All we ever saw was short snippets of them behaving badly in the chamber.
When they even bother to attend.
They live in an isolated and insulated world of privilege where they start to believe their own bullshit.
Small wonder then that they succumb to their base natures.
The Senate is an archaic idea in a parliamentary system that itself is dysfunctional and ripe for abuse.
There are good and decent people there - but too few.
learningaswego 8/16/2013 10:08:45 AM Report
Ha ha - more lefty wisdom, eh?
Have no idea what they do in the Senate, but are absolutely sure that parliamentary body must be abolished, and that our whole system of parliament is dysfunctional.
As the lefty armchair experts pontificate on what a disaster our Canadian parliamententary system is - meanwhile, year after year and continually growing - hundreds of thousands of people from around the world, are literally chomping at the bit, lining up to get in to this great country; and our parliamentary system most certainly plays a big role in that.
Yah, it's that bad, eh!

Once upon a time our democratic way of thinking used to work quite well.
Times have changed and now I'm not so sure. It's most noble values have been so corrupted and watered down that we aren't sure who we can trust any longer.
I don't have the answer but I think we could start with honesty in those who govern us. That's just my opinion and I didn't check with Snopes in case I get thrashed again.

Dutch Touch: IMHO honesty has never gone out of style. IMHO the senators that have cheated should be fired. I know several people who have lost their jobs for stealing from their employer. They were not allowed to pay back what they stole. Some were quietly shown the door others were brought to court and dealt with by the justice system. Democracy is still the best of the many ways to govern. Democracy only works correctly if the public gets out and votes.

More silt from the swamp.
No insights offered, no explanations and no opinion other than 'it's a wonderful country'.
That is not the issue. So let me try again.
Do we need a Senate? As a consumer/tax payer am I getting value for my money?
We need to ask questions to keep from becoming more like sheep than we already are.
Unless you like to eat grass and crap on your food source. Must be a swamp thing.
DutchTouch 8/16/2013 11:13:55 AM Report
cathyh... Problems with our senators are just a symptom of what is going wrong with our parliamentary system.
Most of our federal and provincial programs are in trouble one way or the other. Nothing seems to be working the way it was meant to.
As for voting......even that is a mess.
Robocalls, payoffs by big business, secrecy within parties are all reasons why many people feel voting to be an exercise in futility.
cathyh 8/16/2013 11:51:27 AM Report
DutchTouch: I have voted in every election in which I was eligible to do so. I have never felt that my vote didn't count. IMHO the theory and actual process of how our country works should be taught as early as grade four on in our education system. Quite a few posters on this forum have stated that they don't know what the senate does and then they put it down. How can they slam something they don't understand? Those comments alone should tell them that they should bone up on how our democracy works and then get out and vote.

At least we can't blame the New Democrats or the Green Party for the problems in the Senate---They don't get to appoint any Senators.
Only the Cons and the Fiberals can take the blame for all these problems in the Senate.
Everybody likes to find fault with the U.S.A. Political System but their Senators are all picked by the voters.
We still cling to the archaic British System.

Yah that must be why we're consistently ranked as one of the best countries in the world to live, and why people are lined up at our borders to come and live here - because our parliamentary system is such a failure.
Lefties are chronic whiners and complainers - mainly because their "pick" is rarely chosen to run the show. On the rare occasion they are, they don't usually last long, because the rest of Canada - the rational thinking part, usually throws them out after one term.
Some people just don't know how good they have it, eh? If only some people could venture outside the country or past Echo Bay for a few weeks, they might better understand how good it is.

Oldie Goldie and Flyhawk...
But the system has worked up to now, it is only in the last 20 years or so that the people appointed has started to unravel the senate, by being dishonest or taking advantage of its' lax administration. I would like to see the people in there elected, yes, but not to completely abolish it, no, it is a fairly good example of the checks and balances of the political system. No democracy is completely without its' crooks, see the US's Jesse Jackson Jr, now serving time for fraud, the UK's MPs who got caught for upgrading their houses at taxpayers expense. No systems of government is completely without corruption, even dictatorships have it but when caught the punishment is usually rather harsh!!!

KENNEDY919 8/16/2013 3:33:18 PM Report
The Senate is basically in place to provide second thought on the work done by the House of Commons. Senate seats are distributed evenly in that the Maritimes,Quebec,Ontario and the West have 24 Senators .Newfoundland/Labrador have six senators while the three territories have one each for a total of 105 Senators in total.
The real current problem with the Senate is that the real power and driver of legislation is the Prime Minister's Office(PMO).It is the Prime Minister who appoints the Senators and not the people of Canada. How can you get objective decision making from senators who have strong partisan ties to the Prime Minister? At least in the USA Senators are elected (two per state)and they can be thrown out by the people if they do not do their job.
Senate Reform in Canada is desperately needed. If the senators have to be accountable and be voted in every four years they at least would have to earn their next term in office.

This is an observation made by an American but it also applies here since our system of law and theirs had the same base, usually unmentionable on this site without being considered insane.
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
John Adams quotes (American 2nd US President (1797-1801), 1735-1826)
mallet 8/16/2013 8:30:20 PM Report
I am not sure about the religious part, look at how religion is tearing apart both Syria and now again Egypt, all in the name of a religion. I think that morals are a little more important, for without morals you have no conscience and without a conscience you have no idea of right or wrong, no idea of right or wrong means you have no morals. Kind of a circular arguement, which comes back to religion, which is where you find the basis for morals, and having gone to secular schools, I lost my taste for the religious part but strived to keep the moral part...
Spellchecker 8/16/2013 9:25:57 PM Report
Mallet, the truth lies in your third last line. This is what Adams was getting at. Without the basis, everyone does what is right in his own eyes, hence the inevitable demise of a democratic form of government as the people move away from that base and make their own decisions of right and wrong.

Senate appointments are the reason that it's sooooo dangerous to elect cold, calculating people like Harper to the office of Prime Minister for long periods of time.
Because cold, calculating PM Harper has appointed soooo many Senators (58 of the 105) during his seven year reign as PM, HIS PEOPLE (in the Senate) will be affecting Canadian Legislation for GENERATIONS to come.
G-d help us all.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
