Mr. Poster 3/18/2013 7:55:55 AM Report

More snow on the way...hope this is the last big one.
Budster 3/18/2013 8:10:36 AM Report

I don't want this one ... I'm all done with winter.... shoveling etc. I would like to get the golf clubs out soon... I've had enough cold for a while.
It might not help but makes me feel better... wish list????
right wing 3/18/2013 8:24:56 AM Report

Relax, lets count on the weather report for the area being wrong...again...and we get squat.
This snow can't go soon enough for me but this could be one of those into April winters.
Snobank 3/18/2013 9:48:20 AM Report

Does anybody remember that winter about 35 years ago when all the snow melted in early April, the trees began to bud and the teenagers were wearing shorts outside? Then around the 14th we were hit with a huge blizzard and the schools were closed. Around here you just never know.
Brianne 3/18/2013 10:11:20 AM Report

I always check 9 and 10 news for their weather forecasts ( doppler radar) and by the size of this weather system moving in......... yah, it can't miss us !

LMAO ! I don't know why you think i'm a "conspiracy theorist", just because i think outside of political "perception" and not being chained to a one thought process.

I think you need to separate your "chain of convention" for a while, and get yourself a new perspective on things !

right wing 3/18/2013 11:14:08 AM Report

Trust me Brianne, there are no "chains".
A lot of the stuff folks throw around on here are, I believe, "surface" material, fuel for the fire if you will.
Every once in a while an actual debate breaks out.
Brianne 3/18/2013 11:23:28 AM Report

So, March 29th, 2013, the federal government will no longer be testing emissions from plants ( smoke stacks, etc )and is eliminating the scientist team .

The Harper government’s budget cuts to scientific research at Environment Canada have compromised the department’s capacity to crack down on cancer-linked pollution and its mandate to enforce clean air regulations.

Brianne They have to cut somewhere or there will be another credit downgrade that might wake up his asleep at the wheel supporters. He also needs money to keep his expensive self advertising program going. rw I know you and your pal Voice are going to miss me but I'm off to Pembroke and Southern ON on business and to deliver a load of millwork. I think I'll take a laptop in case you are too lonesome. LMAO
right wing 3/18/2013 12:05:08 PM Report

Brianne,

The Federal government is eliminating repetition of services.
Each and every province has a ministry that protects air, land, water resources and ecosystems of that province.
The authors of that link are using fear mongering to justify their need for existence.
We all want the federal government to cut back on spending and downsize.
How do you suggest they accomplish this.
It's the "not in my backyard" mentality converted to "not my department" mentality.
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 12:05:48 PM Report

On April 6, 1979 there was a ferocious blizzard in Sault Ste. Marie. I was one of many who abandoned my car and began walking on the way to work because I couldn't see anything but blowing snow. I was lucky a far braver fellow with sharper eyes than I picked me up on the way in. The storm continued into the next day. So don't bank on the winter being over yet folks, there could be more to come.
everson 3/18/2013 12:14:00 PM Report

Not at all rw . There you go again with this downloading mantra. Environment is a whole country concern. The federal government is responsible for anything relating to out safe being.
they spend millions upon million there non action plan but care little on what is important to Canada and its citizens. What a scam of a government and the rumblings heard across Canada indicate this. We cannot have a patchwork of environmentals laws.

1.Am I better off today then I was before they were elected?
2.Is Canada better off now?
I vote:
1. No.
2. No.

I remember that year very well, it was my son`s birthday and only one man and his son show up for my son`s party, but we still had a good time, our street was closed for a few days, we lived in Bayview.
Grump 3/18/2013 12:43:31 PM Report

Fly very direct and plain truth. That said I'm sure we will either get some BS. or a google or a whole ramble that is anything but on topic. Hell I don't know but maybe it's more fun to live blissfully ignoring the truth. I guess I could ask the bobsy twins.
Brianne 3/18/2013 12:47:39 PM Report

Democracy is messy. Democracy is loud. Democracy is about hearing a wide ranges of voices and trying to build a path forward among them. It is not about shutting off debate or trying to rush things in through the back door.

“The government is trying to give the impression they are acquiescing to the opposition’s request for a more detailed scrutiny of the budget implementation bill, but they are doing it in such a way that, in reality, it’s not going to happen in a way that can have any kind of impact,” he said. “It’s all a charade, it’s all a game. It’s unfortunate because it leaves Canadians with the impression that this government is being transparent and accountable, but the reality is they are not. By having control of all the committees, through their majority vote, they are able to manipulate this process in such a way that it looks like something good is being done, but in reality it’s not really happening, which is sort of the trademark of this government, isn’t it,” Mr. Christopherson said.

Spellchecker...

Are you sure it was the 6Th?... I seem to remember it being the 17th, I was doing nightshift at the Tube Mill, however I have been mistaken before, nightshifts tend to do that to me, well did back then when I did them...
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 1:18:12 PM Report

Almost definitely the 6th, mallet. I remember it blowing into my wife's birthday on the 7th.
everson 3/18/2013 1:18:49 PM Report

I know we are worse off. The Feds spend to their liking then download off to provinces. What has Harper done to improve Canada as a whole? He cloaks himself on being a PM of austerity, but if so why aren't the books open and why no transparency? Thr right wing wing nuts will defend him till we really get a democratic majority, one that is of, for And by Canada and its citizens
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 1:26:09 PM Report

Good luck on that everson. All governments are for their own special interests, not of, by, and for their constituents. They are for the contributors to their election campaigns.
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 1:29:36 PM Report

And they are of, and by, predominately lawyers and bankers.
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 1:31:54 PM Report

The of, by, and for the people thing died a long time ago.
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 1:36:15 PM Report

Oh yes, and for the paid lobbyists of the special interests. They have their inroads to the politicians of their choice.
flyhawk25 3/18/2013 1:49:43 PM Report

Retreaded...no.
I am asking two questions and giving two answers.
I will let other people draw whatever conclusions they wish.
What do you think?
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 2:27:43 PM Report

I think I would rather not depend on government to make me better off. I think the more they are out of my life the better off I'll be.
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 2:29:20 PM Report

That was the answer to question 1. I think the answer to question 2 is yes, and I think flyhawk knew what my answers would be.
mamma 3/18/2013 2:42:21 PM Report

Skipper?.... No comments?
flyhawk25 3/18/2013 2:45:57 PM Report

Spelly...the first question also relates to things like national defense, environmental protection, transportation and safety, energy, pensions and federal transfers to provinces for health care.
With that in mind, what do you answer to No. 1?
mallet 3/18/2013 2:54:23 PM Report

Spellchecker...

I will bend to your better memory... as for the two questions asked, I tend to agree with you... Something I heard, not sure where it was, but went something like " government is not in the position to make jobs, it is to make the situation to encourage employment" or something like that. All government jobs are a drain on the taxpayer.... that should raise the ire of fly, everson, brianne and grump....
flyhawk25 3/18/2013 3:09:13 PM Report

mallet...and your response to the two questions would be?
Government jobs by their nature are paid for the taxpayer.
So before they are 'drained' should the federal government privatize air traffic controllers? CSIS? Border patrol and customs and immigration agencies?
Spellchecker 3/18/2013 3:19:54 PM Report

Flyhawk, my answer remains the same except for national defense, which was the reason for North American government in the first place. The rest of the things are products of socialism which is now dragging us down to the level of other countries that have adopted, and been destroyed by socialistic principles.
Voiceofreason 3/18/2013 3:44:31 PM Report

fly, ask yourself this; Were we any better off for each 4 year term regardless of government. The answer is no on every single one. Answer otherwise and people here will know you're full of sh*t.
everson 3/18/2013 4:22:47 PM Report

VOR.= rude
mallet 3/18/2013 4:44:59 PM Report

Flyhawk...

Your two questions...

Am I (me) better off... I have to say yes.

Is the country better off... depends on your point of view... in mine Yes.

As for the Government services... ATC CSIS CBS and C & I..

The Air traffic controlers.. As long as they are trained and competent, they could work for the airport concerned.

CSIS CBS AND C & I.. I suppose they should be under a government control, however maybe they should come under the Ministry of Agriculture. Why? you may ask. Well those people can find a cow with BSE and trace it back to when it was born, what farm, what stall, when its mother was inseminated, and who held the tube, whereas the other acromyns couldn't find their arse in the dark!!

For those who may be interested in hearing about the effects the Residential School's had on the children forced to attend, there is a show on APTN Tuesday MArch 19th, 2013 at 9:00 pm called "We Were Children"...

here's a link to the a couple of trailers for the show

Everson...

Why on earth would you say that, Niigannis is only giving some information on a TV programme. For those that are interested on the subject, they will welcome the information, those that are not won't care. Why anyone should get jumped on for that I have no idea!
Pink Peony 3/18/2013 6:03:04 PM Report

Niigaanis, I'm planning on watching that. I think after the movie, they will be talking with 3 people who were in residential schools. APTN is a good station.
Pink Peony 3/18/2013 6:14:12 PM Report

CRTC wants to allow providers to remove APTN from basic cable. If that happens and Shaw removes it from basic cable, I've decided that I'll remove basic cable from my home. That'll be the last straw for me with regards to Shaw cable.
everson 3/18/2013 6:18:38 PM Report

No one is jumping but working people, our First Nations people are fodder for the so called Neo cons. Meanwhile they have no solution on how solve any problem.

BIG BROTHER 3/18/2013 8:23:20 PM Report

If you would like a first hand account of the Residential School experience, The Keeper n Me, written by Richard Wagamese, is an excellent source. Very well written, funny in the appropriate places and a lighthearted description of a very sensitive topic. The main character (narrator) is an adult going back to his roots after 'surviving' life in Toronto, post Residential School experience.

I am now reading Indian Horse, another novel by the same author. Touches on the same experience, but at a different time in the process of the white government 'stealing' the children from their families and plunking them in the Residential Schools in order to 'whiten' them.

Keep in mind, these events weren't happening 100 or more years ago. They were happening as recently as the 1960's!!
Voiceofreason 3/18/2013 9:39:33 PM Report

everson, I'll be the first to admit that I'm rude. Sometimes that's what it takes for people to get it though. I want you to tell me that we were better off before Harper. List reasons, please. I will gladly agree if it makes sense.
Zing 3/18/2013 11:59:18 PM Report

That's a good reason to be rude VOR, NOT!
everson 3/19/2013 12:51:48 PM Report

We were better off before Harper, our clean, beautiful, Canadian pride, our children's future was put aside to feed the greed and what does every Canadian who is hard working get? The Nordic countries put us to shame. Harper has sold us out in a veil of secrecy all in the name of austerity. What austerity?

Niigaanis,

I have been out in the bush for the last couple of weeks and am now just going through the archives here. The link you posted on March 18th was very moving and powerful and thank you for putting it up.I just got through watching the movie "We Were Children".

One of the victims as a child asked..What kind of god is this that they believe in?? Good question.

And Mallet

Everson made a valid observation about how the right might have been jumping on Niigaanis over that posting.I have had conversations in the past with extreme rightists who actually tried to justify the residential school system.I have a nephew that works drilling rigs out of Alberta. He tells me that a lot of the people out there are of the view that the residential school system was wrong but it was brought on by the natives themselves!Somehow their fault it all happened.I like to think those people are fringe and will be gone from the political landscape soon.

I went to a catholic separate school in the early sixties. It was nowhere near as bad as the residentials but still pretty bad and in the same vein.I see a priest these days and I just shudder, run, and get the fu@k out of the area ,fast as I can.
