just reviewed this weeks posts and all I can say is wow...some really need to find themselves a hobby or part time job....
it never ceases to amaze that the more profilic posters also seem to have a bit of an inflated ego...

....do some of you at least provide a shovel to go with the BS you so freely dispense?

Good morning sweet Soo!
Hey March break winding down and our company for the week returns to home base. My wife is exhausted, I don't know where she gets the energy. Unfortunately I get to sit on the side lines and watch. My time is taken up with half a day at SAH oncology unit then home for a short nap. My load is ever decreasing - I'm finished my thirty radiation treatments now wrapping up Chemo, should be finished in june with a full body Ct scan to see the results . I've asked for the results now but just get strange looks. Then back into O.R. to reverse my ileostomy. Ain't life great? I'll be glad to get back to work. The biggest challenge has been being confined to the house and trying not to live in my disease. I did a lot of apologizing to my loved ones for being difficult to live with in the beginning but hopefully have turned that around by coming to appreciate their support and not make it harder than it is on them. They have been great. I know that without them in my life I would not have been allowed to come home from the Barn. I can't imagine trying to handle this alone. So I leave my keyboard and sneak back to bed to snuggle beside the best kept secret in the Sweet Soo! her former spouse has turned out to be my best friend he just doesn't know it. Best step kids in the world (they actually like me) and best partner in the world, doesn't get much better than that.

I find it interesting that a couple of people on this site figure that the gun laws are for honest people and the criminals could careless. And they are right in that respect. However with a limited thought process such as that would dicate the direction of not having any laws at all. When you have people like right wing and voice posting their dribble labeling everything right and left when they cant even tell its their first cousin beside them in bed whilst scanning the internet to find the next all you can eat buffet with one hand and stroking their pm poster with the other...ah yes multi-tasking at it's creepiest! They fail to understand the basic difference between the US of nut jobs to the south and us in the north - owning a gun of any type in Canada is a privilage and not a right - and of course we have the usa. However they (voice and rw) seem to align themselves with the country to the south with phoney credentials and posturing lead many to beleive they are simply wanna-bes' or just simple.

skipper dave 3/15/2013 8:42:07 AM Report

Niigannis - My former spouse came over in a boat in the fifties, consequently my two daughters have dual citizenship and a love of all Irish. I've attended one irish wake and love how they celebrate the life of the dearly departed not the passing. Now the "curse of the drink" followed them over and I was more than pleased to try to drink up to their level - could not. Joke, Paddy is lying in state in the living room and Mary says Colleen how did he die. Colleen replies it was the drink that got him. Mary says why didn't you send him to AA. Colleen replies "Heavens no he wasn't that bad".
We would attend a St. Patrick days dance when at 1:00 am they would shoo off the non-irish than get down to serious drinking and singing IRA songs till it's time to go to a patriarch house for breakfast and more drinking. Another irish joke - Why did god invent alcohol - to prevent the irish from ruling the earth. Thank god I matured out of that insanity.

Fly what's the gun control legislature in Mexico stack up with ours. Seems to be no shortage of victims?
right wing 3/15/2013 9:19:56 AM Report

You can create all the gun laws you like.
It will never stop due to the following.
...and remember, Chicago has some of the strictest guns laws in the U.S.

"A breakdown of the Chicago killing fields shows that 83% of those murdered in Chicago last year had criminal records. In Philly, it’s 75%. In Milwaukee it’s 77% percent. In New Orleans, it’s 64%. In Baltimore, it’s 91%. Many were felons who had served time. And as many as 80% of the homicides were gang related.

Chicago’s problem isn’t guns; it’s gangs. Gun control efforts in Chicago or any other major city are doomed because gangs represent organized crime networks which stretch down to Mexico, and trying to cut off their gun supply will be as effective as trying to cut off their drug supply."
theprotector 3/15/2013 9:23:43 AM Report

that is the issue you twit! Sure point to chicago but ex post facto laws do not solve the problem by themselves. You think everything is black and white, left or right cant you form a rational thought on your own - you are clearly the dumbest person around! I sure hope you were never allowed to breed.

Good points RW but I want to throw into the mix that our law enforcement people are one of the two parties who adamantly do not want an end to the war on drugs (neither do the bad guys - too much money). So we have a gang of criminals who kill each other with guns and we are saying having any kind of legislation to control their instrument of delivery is futile than what? Reduce the gang = Legalize drugs and take the profit card out of the deck?

Rep. Sen., Rob Portman, has had a change of heart towards the issue of gay marriage.

What? Did the earth shift on it's axis? Did hell freeze over?

Nope, none of the above. Turns out his son is gay, has been forever and finally told Dad. Now Dad has taken the cure and changed his stance.

Dick 'The Dick' Cheney, whose daughter has a similar 'affliction', advised Portman to follow his heart. How sweet is that!!
right wing 3/15/2013 10:24:23 AM Report

skipper dave

I would agree somewhat on what you said about the drug war.
The bad guys definitely do not want it to end but I would not paint with such a wide brush on the law enforcement side.
Many laws enforcement officers that see the daily destruction of drugs are dedicated to do what they can.
Hitting these gangs hard, and I mean hard would certainly go a long way in helping.
Organized neighborhoods have been effective in pushing drugs and crime out.
Booting illegals the hell out of the country would be another good step.
As Canadians it does seem to us crazy for a private citizen to have a military style weapon.
They can ban them all tomorrow but it will not stop the murder rate linked to crime or the occasional nutcase from shooting up a place killing innocent people.
Each time this happens it's the same knee jerk reaction and they are not even getting to the root of the problem.
Get after the gangs. Gangs haven taken root in Canadian cities also.
Check out the body count in B.C. lately...all gang related.

rw,
Are you as stupid as you sound??

They may have changed their view, but they are members of a group who get their 'jollies' out of flogging anyone who may be different than what their worldview allows. Oh, then they are allowed to change their views when they are directly affected and everyone should just leave them alone.

Hmmm, I guess you are!!

Here's my perhaps over simplification of most crime today that is driven by addiction. Give them the god damn stuff and prevent the street walking, petty theft, breaking into cars, houses, fire half the police, close 75% of the prisons, you are going to have to they will be empty, now don't spend a cent on treating them, we don't spend it now and do something with the mega money of your tax dollars saved. Oh ya throw the towel in on the war on drugs it doesn't work and If like rw says legislation on guns doesn't work throw the towel in on that too - Find another solution hey maybe reduce the criminal element oh ya we've already covered that. By the way I am all for treating the addict but that's a whole separate issue that I can tackle when I can sleep in my own bed in safety.
BIG BROTHER 3/15/2013 10:38:47 AM Report

old-cat,
Interesting you mention the mall collapse. I'm wondering if the people who built the mall in Elliot Lake are the same crew who built the addition at the Station Mall that collapsed a few years ago. The ACR sure knows how to pick the engineers! Seems to me the Station Mall collapse was due to faulty welds in critical structural joints.

I don't know that Cheney ever reversed his view on gay marriage. He was always in favour of it. As I recall it was smarmy Democrats who 'outed' his daughter to the public in hopes of discrediting Republicans, forcing him to make a public statement.

They're not smarmy because they're Democrats, but rather their use of opponents' offspring to score political points (cf Palin's brood).

Just for you rw :)

"Psychologist Martha Stout documents how sociopaths will successfully put on an act of being charming and convincing while simultaneously waging war against the common sense of their victims through a constant barrage of lies and abuse, all the time claiming their innocence. This is a perfect description of how the mainstream media and the government operates in the United States today – habitually lying without recourse while denouncing anyone who challenges the lie as a “conspiracy theorist”.

A revolution has been launched against rationality and truth. Those who question authority are instantly derided as “conspiracy theorists” simply for coming to logical conclusions based on the evidence in front of them. The term “conspiracy theory” has been harnessed into a pejorative weapon with which to bludgeon free speech, healthy skepticism and independent thinking.

In reality, today’s “conspiracy theorist” is someone who has managed to retain some remnant of control over their own thought process and one who has successfully resisted becoming another victim of ‘gaslighting’ – an individual who knows when they are being lied to."

Generally, he doesn't come up with solid examples, just more rhetoric about the lame lefty.

Let's face it, there was no better TV than watching the windbag Limbaugh fall from grace. As for Sarah, well, politics is a blood sport. She was out of her league and over her head. Should "the voice" be threatened by any gun-toting miscreant, he need only stand tall, brandish his doctoral degree and say, " be off with you unlearned one". Any self-respecting thug would flee before such a brilliant riposte.

"As far as them being loaded? I have a push-button safe on my wall with a loaded gun and 2 spare 17 round mags. I won't be fast enough?"

Well, now that you've just let us know where it is........

Your chances of being killed are now 2.7% higher for having a loaded gun in your house..... like really ? Seriously, what are you thinking ?
Voiceofreason 3/15/2013 4:35:27 PM Report

Brianne, tell that to everyone in Texas, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, New Hampshire... need me to keep going?

Guess what Brianne? You drive everyday so that makes you 11.236% more likely to get in a car accident everyday! Are you going to stop driving?
Voiceofreason 3/15/2013 4:43:44 PM Report

I'll even add in that in Arizona and Alaska, you don't need a concealed carry permit. Any law abiding adult citizen can carry a concealed firearm legally. Does that scare you? It makes me feel more comfortable.
Brianne 3/15/2013 4:52:38 PM Report

I haven't had a vehicle in 3 years :P So, therefore, I don't drive.

Voiceofreason 3/15/2013 5:45:37 PM Report

Brianne, that's the thing. I'm not trying to get people mad. I can't help it that people respond with emotion, skepticism and derisive comments because they think they know better.

All I can say is, to each his own. Some people want more than their own.

bb: Never a Palin fan, but the abuse heaped on her disabled kid over at Huffpo (and its Canadian cousin Rabble) was a bit over the top. This type of media abuse and microscope investigations of one's life keeps the best candidates from being politicians. I do believe that. Bloodsport or not, most Democratic candidates' children do not get that kind of abuse. (The Bush kids did it to themselves, though.)

We all fall for that splinter-plank-eye thing. It's good to be called on it. The world is grey, not black and white, nor Us and Them. It can be at times b&w, but usually not. Governments and media like to portray it as so. Easier to control the message.

VoR: never a big fan of pistols as home defence. Under adrenaline, it's too hard to put rounds downrange on target. Cops are no better than others at this. That's been my experience at any rate. A small bore shotgun is more ideal. A 20 with buckshot is easy enough for the lady/older children of the house to handle, and is easier to aim.
Niigaanis 3/15/2013 5:52:14 PM Report

good thing VoR is not in Canada since it is illiegal to have a loaded handgun in a home in Ontario...more chances of an accidental shooting hence the increased chance of someone such as a child been hurt or killed...seem to recall a police officer in the US whose child was killed because he'd left his loaded revolver in the night stand beside his bed.....
Voiceofreason 3/15/2013 5:52:37 PM Report

Bill, thanks for the recommendation. I actually have my name on the list for a Kel Tec KSG, but everyone seems to be fresh out.
Niigaanis 3/15/2013 5:54:00 PM Report

oh and good morning all
Voiceofreason 3/15/2013 6:00:44 PM Report

Niigaanis, mine is locked in a small safe, mounted into wall studs. Electric push-button combination to get in. That's a bit different than having a loaded gun in a drawer.

In Canada, the police use an 18 gauge steel box manufactured by Protocan which stores the ammo and firearm in the same case. To comply with the law, this box has to have a divider in the middle. When padlocked, the gun and ammo are separate, but upon opening, both are available. The public can buy this safe and mount it using an adaptor place also made by Protocan. If you se this box, you are following the law no better or worse than the police. The police have to comply with the same laws as average citizens when not on duty. No, they do not get to take their duty pistols home. They are required to buy an additional pistol outside of work and need a P.A.L. to do so just like any other Canadian. I have a friend who recently became a Canadian police officer and this is exactly what he told me.

You are correct, it has to be unloaded. But the magazines can be stores loaded in the same box as long as it's locked and separated with a divider.

BIG BROTHER 3/15/2013 6:48:25 PM Report

Bill,
Apparently you haven't heard of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. Now there's a couple of winners whose support doesn't come from the tooth fairy. The Huff Post is child's play compared to those two.

And yes, I get pleasure out of watching the politicians, especially the righteous ones, change their stance on an issue because some personal life situation causes them to all of a sudden see the errors of their ways. For some reason or another, it seems more prevalent on the right side of the coin, because for them the world is so black and white.

One of my all time favorite karma issues was Richard Nixon screaming into his White House tapes 'what an asshole f'in commie Trudeau'was. A couple of years later he became the victim of his own sword....the Oval Office tapes.

Bill_the_Cat 3/15/2013 7:13:36 PM Report

BB: I've seen that intolerance on both sides of the political spectrum. That's part of the problem. We fall back on the I-Thou dichotomy.

Whilst I tend to the moderate right on the spectrum, I detest ideologues. I am forbidden from being political in public, so I watch with bemusement the professional party apparatchicks and their machinations. Lots of people looking for their turn at the trough. More similar than different.

Up too late with a cranky toddler last night. Perhaps I'm just too tired to fight today.

Moderation of course is the answer.
But we all learn from those first teachers - our parents.
In a 'Leave it to Beaver' world life was as black and white as the picture.
That is not the case today.
Our species in NA especially is manipulated by so many external factors who become our new mentors that we are more vulnerable to more external influences than any time since we stepped away from those tribal fires.
Bill_the_Cat 3/15/2013 8:05:37 PM Report

fly: I am not certain that the 'Leave it to Beaver' world ever existed but on TV. Women trapped in marriages; physical and sexual abuse of children unacknowledged. A whole generation of vets returned carrying their baggage with them. We never saw those stories. We know ptsd rates now, and its associated costs--double those rates at least for a conscripted army. Just as in WW1, swept under the rug, drowned in alcohol, and never spoken of.

In some way, these people looked to their parents....and produced the ME generation.

I guess we as parents always try to correct our parents' failings, rather than identify our own.

The lefties are very scared of us "swamp people."
They don't like to go in there, cause the truth dwells within and they get swamped by it.

Big Bro said today.

"And yes, I get pleasure out of watching the politicians, especially the righteous ones, change their stance on an issue because some personal life situation causes them to all of a sudden see the errors of their ways. For some reason or another, it seems more prevalent on the right side of the coin, because for them the world is so black and white."

...and Big Bro is correct I am always at the watch for glaring hypocrisies.
I enjoy pointing Big Bro's and all the lefties oversights and hypocrisy out.
It is why I lure them into "the swamp."

How about those that change their stance for political gain...no personal life situation, they were just opposed to gay marriage.

1996: President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, -- which defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman. The law denies federal benefits to same-sex couples in the nine states where gay marriage is legal. Clinton said he signed it because it would have tamped down calls for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Only 81 out of 535 members of Congress opposed DOMA. Fast-forward seventeen years to March 2013, when Clinton urged the Supreme Court to overturn DOMA. He explained: "As the president who signed the act into law, I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and, in fact, incompatible with our Constitution."

In a June 1996 interview in the gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate, Clinton said, "I remain opposed to same-sex marriage. I believe marriage is an institution for the union of a man and a woman. This has been my long-standing position, and it is not being reviewed or reconsidered." He did not mention the issue in his 2004 autobiography. (no of course he didn't)

The majority of Democratic Senators voted for the bill, (with Pryor of Arkansas absent), and a majority of Democratic Representatives voted for it.

Fear the swamp people......
Grump 3/15/2013 8:56:16 PM Report

Swampers more to be pitied than feared. I oppose gay marriage in principal. That is my opinion but that is not to say that I would deny any that right. The same as I don't believe in abortion but what right have I to deny some woman that right. It is rabid neo-cons that think they have right to impose their beliefs on everyone.

Gosh.
I think that any politician who changes a position might just be adjusting his paradigm.
I cannot know whether it is for personal or political reasons.
I quite admire the Republican who just changed his stance when he found out his son was gay.
I admire Dick Cheney's support of his gay daughter.
Unlike our resident expert I don't think that life is either linear or absolute. People change.
I have believed in a pro-life position whether it is abortion, death penalties and war.
But when my wife was dying of a terminal illness I was quite prepared to help her to choose her own exit had it been necessary.

mallet 3/15/2013 9:29:00 PM Report

Grump..

While I would not deny the relationships for Gays and Lesbians it does not mean I have to approve of said union being called a marriage. For the last 2000 years that has meant a union of a man and a woman and to procreate, and I am not sorry if I offend anyone if I continue to believe that is what marriage is supposed to be. The GLTB has become a very powerful lobby, and it would take really strong person to go against "popular" sentiments. Prehaps it would be good for a lot of politicians/lawmakers to have a few lessons in democracy, like the basic idea of the majority ruling and not giving into every whim of a minority. I know I am out of step with modern society, I believe schools should teach the basic 3R's, right and wrong, law and order, and of course the old "do unto others, as you wish to be done to". I also remember that men and women fought and died so that I can have the right to voice that opinion!!
