Breaking news!
All gas stations that were at $1.37.9 have reduced to $1.36.9. Careful when rushing out this morning to take advantage.
Wisenheimer 3/5/2013 6:47:40 AM Report

The federal Liberals have decided to speed up their headlong rush to oblivion by electing Justin (aka) the "Bieb" Trudeau as their leader.
Grump 3/5/2013 7:06:36 AM Report

Wisen you little maroon I'm still here but I do have a news flash for you " my computer works in Pembroke too". Now for Voice , Ace's twin on the IQ scale. Everson really works in a lab, what about you Pharm B.? LMAO. rw the Cajuns would have a know it all like you skinned and hung out to dry before day one was over. Now that the late posting swampers are dealt with. Good morning everyone, have a great day.
Grump 3/5/2013 7:14:13 AM Report

Wisen no need for Justin to take us anywhere but up. Harper has already taken us deep along the road to oblivion by running up the Federal debt to 800 Billion and Flaherty still telling us they will balance the books by 2015. You swampers are going to have to stop reading and believing in fairy tales. Then again maybe that is just part of growing up. LMAO.

"Just the facts" ma'am". Federal debt still below 1997 peak in real terms. Would be in surplus if not for the 2008-2009 stimulus spending. Guess who screamed bloody murder that the spending wasn't enough?

"The idea of daylight saving time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 during his stay in Paris. He published an essay titled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light” that proposed to economize the use of candles by rising earlier to make use of the morning sunlight."

LMAO....
I knew it, the Liberals were wacko even back then.
Saving candles???

Sounds like our modern day Suzuki with his energy light bulbs...can't see squat with them but lets do a feel good thing.

Good morning sweet Soo!
Four more sleeps and the fun begins! Winter summit. I informed the "one who must be obeyed" last night that I had booked a couple of hours on Saturday for a meet and greet at the Water Tower. She was not particularly impressed and told me to knock myself out and have fun! Guess that means I'm going by myself. Wonder if Stats is bringing Darlene?
I'll be running up to the SAH later on anybody need anything? Someone mentioned Robins as a harbinger of Spring - I've observed another sure sign. About three weeks before break-up the Seagulls reappear in the plant to claim a spot for nesting on some of the nice warm cozy roofs. One day nothing than the next the air is full of mother natures clean up specialists. I love gulls, I believe they are one of the few birds that fly for the love of soaring. When they used to attack my garbage bags I learned to use a spray bottle filled with bleach to repel the scavengers. Little bit of spray over the bags and voila, no mess.
JUSTANOTHERNAME 3/5/2013 10:10:20 AM Report

Voice you got Pharm B because I believe the Bozo designation not the other Wisen the stimulous spending upped the debt slightly but it has really been piled on the last few years so who will you blame for that? Come to think of it I don't know why I bother to respond to Ace's twin and one not much better. I run a very sucessfull business and I have more than enough work which is why I haven't advertised in years. That said you swampers keep making up fairly tales to match what you want to believe and don't let the truth interfere with your fantasies. Right Wing:
No thanks. It is nice to have that sunlight in the evening. That is what Daylight Saving Time is all about. I think Franklin must have been on something, as apposed to onto something, when he seemed to suggest there would be more sunlight in the morning. It is dark an hour longer in the morning during Daylight Saving Time and light for an hour later at night. The extra hour of daylight is especially welcomed by sports teams. I lived in Saskatchewan for a while and I think it gets away with Standard Time because, being so flat, the sun takes a long time to go down.

Brianne...

I do not doubt your sincerety regarding the situation in Syria, however as with most civil wars there are always atrocities committed by both sides. Why the west thinks that every country should have a democracy like the one we have I do not know, and I think that many do not always agree with the one we have, certainly not some sections of the people. Wether we like Assad or not is moot as he was the "elected" head of state of the Country of Syria, and if he was not supported by a lot of people this conflict would have been over a long time ago. One thing the leaders of the western countries do not seem to understand is, that this is a "secular" conflict, one branch of Islam against another. You get between them and both sides will turn on you, all you have to do is look at the countries that changed leadership in the so called "Arab Spring", Egypt's President doesn't like the result of the last election so have another one, Libya, well the folk in Benghazi wants to be separate from the leaders in Tripoli, and if you were the folks who aided in getting rid of Ghadafi, well we will kill you now.. I would give both sides aid in the way of food and medical supplies but as for arming the rebels, I don't think so, more guns mean more dead Syrians...

mallet: thoughtful and well-informed post. I agree that we tend to believe that if we foist democracy on tribal cultures that everything will be O.K. I had a long chat with a young man from Chad a few years ago and learned so much about how if tribes have been murdering each other for hundreds of years that is what makes the politics, not any political theories.

On the gull issue, my son in law once told me that if you soak pieces of bread in Pepto-Bismol and leave it outside, the gulls will eat it and subsequently explode. I haven't tried it but maybe Dr Sunshine can help. In any case, Skipper Dave's solution seems a little more humane.

Before the response rooms were divided into the 'blue room' and 'red room', there would be up to 500 posts a day, the bulk of them coming for on-shift working employees of the local call centres. There were a few problems with the attitude on here and call centre management were alerted to the situation which they started to monitor. In about a week, their computers were disabled and thus they could no longer "multi-task" using Sootoday as their venue.

Another thing to add for our quick witted friend (yes, Grump, that's you); All of the pharmacists at SAH are able and fully allowed to text message and use their cell phones while working. If your niece's husband doesn't then good for him, but technology doesn't have to just be used to entertain us folk. I was interested to read about so many pundits, including our own "nice" Wisen, discussing how, if the Libs do choose Trudeau as their leader, it will jettison the Libs into oblivion.
I don't get the logic.
First the Libs have garnered an astonishing number of new members, many of whom are on the Trudeau wagon'
Second, regardless of what some say, there is a real distaste with Harper and his (V of R) type personality.
Third, Trudeau has charm and can admit when he makes a mistake.
Fourth, from what I read he has surrounded himself with a serious group of advisors
Fifth, voters vote not always according to reason

I am not "sold" on Trudeau but find some of the negative press naive.

I believe that Harper is dead meat and ,if they don't find a more palatable solution, it'll be, in a couple of years, the usual conservative whimperings of "Poor frigging Canada"

How be you neo-cons read the article re Hayes not responding to questions about the Feds shutting down the Experimental Lakes Area research facility at a cost of 50 million when they can operate it for 2 million a year. It makes you wonder how anyone can continue to support this government. The article is on this site's local news. We sure elected a winner.

The fact that Canada has more fresh water lakes than the rest of the world combined seems to escape these morons. The truth about polution from the oil sands must be inconvenient for the Tories.

You rant about the conservatives spending money and then you rant about reining in government spending.
You know nothing about this facility but what has been put into a self serving news release.
Get used to it, government cutbacks to put this country on the right track are just starting.
Long time coming I say.

I am getting rid of a computer. It is going to the recycle place on Wilson. Is it safe to recycle such a thing? What about the personal information on it? I don't know anything about this stuff? Do I need to do anything with it?

I know I should know this type of thing

Grump..

With regards to the ELA, which to be honest I had never heard of, why would it cost $50 mil to close it down? Is the site of this place so polluted that there will have to be remedial work done. Or is this the cost of terminating contracts with the employees? or is this a case of a government make work project that has run its course and it is found to be just repeating itself? I do not know, but I am sure the bean counters have looked at it, and found the value for money is no longer there, after all you can only repeat the same experiment so many time with the same result before someone notices!!

Rickford is an astute politician, and would comment if there were something to comment about. Hayes lives or dies by getting (1) Bridge Plaza, and/or (2) Deep water port. He would be an idiot to comment on something which could put him in bad graces with the money-wallahs in Ottawa--all the moreso because it doesn't affect his riding. The people of that riding elected an NDP turned Independent MP. That's his job to raise hell.

Another hit-piece by sootoday. Neither Hughes, nor any of the Northern Ontario NDP caucus has raised this issue publically. Ask them why they don't support their former colleague?

BIG BROTHER 3/5/2013 10:49:25 PM Report

Bridge Plaza....done deal. Tony Martin's baby.

Deep Water Port...if Essar wants it, they'll get it. Hayes will be nothing but a door opener at the meeting.

Water is a federal responsibility. It has no boundaries Retread.

OOpps...Bill.
Bill_the_Cat 3/5/2013 10:56:44 PM Report

bb: I'm no fan of Hayes; I just don't see a reason for him to comment on an obscure project in northwestern ontario. They don't elect him, and nobody here will care come election season.

I can't speak to the plaza. The Dippers may claim credit, but the sitting MP and MPP will get the media (and thus the credit). Between Hayes and Orazietti, I can guess who wins in that media scrum.

Hayes' silence on the Federal job losses locally however, is deafening. All those positions moved to Sudbury and Toronto with nary a peep. Unbelievable.
Bill_the_Cat 3/5/2013 10:58:22 PM Report

bb: given Hayes' apparent allergy to local politics, I doubt he'll be around to collect a pension.
Bill_the_Cat 3/5/2013 10:59:24 PM Report

bb: yeah, I know the plaza is Federal--it just seems DO takes credit for everything locally.
BIG BROTHER 3/5/2013 11:02:27 PM Report

Bill.....agreed as to who'll get credit. But the Bridge Plaza was well under way pre-Hayes. And I'm not even NDP.

Water flows across electoral boundaries. We should be screaming to keep a watchdog on the job to protect/oversee the water quality. It is a more valuable commodity than oil. It's not just about jobs.
Bill_the_Cat 3/5/2013 11:02:42 PM Report

jimssm: thanks for the info. I have a growing collection of parts that need recycling!
BIG BROTHER 3/5/2013 11:05:15 PM Report

Bill, it took some local arm wrestling to get the property together to make the Bridge Plaza happen. Harper made it a political issue, not wanting Tony to get credit. DO will be there shaking hands, kissing babies and leading the parade.
Bill_the_Cat 3/5/2013 11:05:35 PM Report

bb: agreed with water. I have friends (biology researcher types) who bemoan the state of the cross border committees that govern water management.
Voiceofreason 3/5/2013 11:13:20 PM Report

Big Brother, Tony Martin was and still is a bum who hasn't learned to iron his suit yet. If you think that he deserves credit for the bridge plaza you need to give your head a shake. Harper came here on his own accord to check the place out for himself and decided the dump needed fixing.

And Jim, I'd rather be an arrogant prick who tells the truth and is good at his job rather than a nice person who can't make proper decisions when it comes to their job. Take the emotion out of it and it becomes a lot easier to get through the nonsense and give people the healthcare they deserve. We're talking empathy, not sympathy. The last thing this world needs is another bleeding heart.

"Canada has the third largest proven oil reserves in the world, but the province of Alberta is planning to cut education and health care spending this year, and Canada's national debt stands at a whopping $600 billion (CAD).

How can that be? With so many people calling our massive tar sands reserves the "Saudi Arabia of the North," how can we be so cash-strapped? How can the Alberta government be planning to cut funding to schools, education and health care if the province is so oil rich? "

We are in an economic recession Brianne. If the businesses are doing bad, the government does too. Things don't get cheaper. Raw resources only account for so much of the picture. Calling us the Saudi Arabia of the North my be a bit extreme.
sparks7 3/6/2013 2:14:49 AM Report

Brianne

Tar sands oil is very costly to produce and get to market at this time. Oil that is just north of $90 just doesn't cut it for a lot of folks in Alberta and things are slowing down out there. That said, a lower oil cost is good for just about everybody else.

Voice

" We are in an economic recession"

Sure, there are a lot of reasons/indicators that would have people thinking that way and I am glad there are.The old wall of worry thingy. But,just look at the other stuff.Corporate profits through the roof while they sit on a mountain of cash that will have to be deployed at some time one way or the other.Dow Jones at record high today/wealth effect.Housing in US on the mend.Bernake and Japan telling us they are going to print ,print, and print till all is well forcing people into into stocks.A zillion people who feel they have missed out over the last few years and will now foolishly buy.Precious metals falling and US $ rising. We are in one hell of a sweet spot and I think it has legs for year or 18 months yet barring the inevitable correction in the spring. After that,I am outta there, tempted to bail now!

There is no doubt it is still a recession in many ways. The middle class has just been pummeled over the last decade and I sure feel for young folks just coming up.
