hey where are all the armchair generals, must be still sleeping,

Man rw what a piece of work you are, I'm surprised you didn't suggest throwing that gramma under the bus.

You sir are a chip off of the old headed harper block....squared head and all, must of been a really chore for your mom when you were born getting those sharp points of your big head out.

I feel for any kids you may have had.. because you are just one hateful old bast@@d just like your hero herr harper. Yaavolt herr commandant...

pretty soon he and you will want everyone jackbooting to your tune..sad state this once beautiful and proud country is in with the likes of you two spewing your hatred and intolerance...hope you have a crappy day and never need compassion from anyone because IMO you do not deserve it....

Wow rw I think you have p****D the Lefties off. Speaking of your hero Steve, I see he has dropped all his law and order crap and his Senate reform. Now he is not kicking in the Fed's portion for highways through town. That is a little hard to take after the Billions they dump into the general fund from gas tax revenue that was put on to build and maintain highways. Now we are deeper in debt than ever before, our credit rating is down but I still hear that old neo-con rah, rah , rah. I wish one of you faithfull would explain how electing a stump and being with the ruling party makes us winners. By the way he is still spending many millions of dollars of taxpayer's money on self advertising

The Feds have a mandate to bring us back to surplus. The Ontario Liberals, not so much, as they have racked 15 billion in debt assuaging the needs of their supporters. To not wind up like Greece and Detroit the Province and our fair city need to deal with over spending on non-essentials. One man's essential is another man's entitlement.

Sheesh now the right wingers are crying because someone hurt their feelings. Hell here I thought they didn't have any. Wisen what part of economics don't you understand? Harper has run up so much debt and mismanaged the economy so badly that he now has to cut back on his pet project "Law and Order". The Canadian Bond market has been downgraded so the interest will be climbing. If he set out to screw things up he has suceeded wonderfully. This fellow is making Mulroney look good. LMAO.

right wing You asked why is the Pope's ring destroyed? His ring has the symbol of St. Peter the fisherman and his name around the circumference of the ring. When a Pope dies, or in this case resigns, his ring is destroyed in front of all the cardinals in order to prevent his ring from being used to stamp older documents.
Try and google "Pope's ring"
statusquo 3/2/2013 1:34:52 PM Report

Grump,

Give up already. They'll never get it.

Out of the past 30 fiscal years, the governments of Canada have run a surplus for only 11 years with all of them (except two) under Paul Martin as either Minister of Finance under Chretien or Prime Minister.
The best year was in 2000 - 2001 when we had a 20 billion surplus.
In comparison the worst was 09-10, approx 60 billion in the hole! A deficit achieved in record time.
The notion that conservative governments are fiscally astute is a myth that refuses to die.
Canada under Harper is being sold out and this current government is damaging Canada in ways we will have to deal with for decades to come.
It may be a "majority" government but the fact remains that the "majority" of Canadians never voted those morons in.
flyhawk25 3/2/2013 2:20:07 PM Report

SQ...most Canadians don't parse the political landscape much.
However just ask the average person if they are better or worse off since Harper and McGuinty took office.
We are seeing the reality of fiscal stupidity both at the federal and provincial levels.
Government spending is out of control. But that mirrors the personal habits of most of us.
The attitude is - enjoy it now and worry about it later.
Well later is here.
It doesn't take a political scientist to follow the money trail.
If there are votes in it spend money to keep the power.
Sadly we got what we deserved.
Now we have to figure out which of the lesser evils we want.
Jimssm 3/2/2013 3:08:28 PM Report

I do give Paul Martin credit for pulling Canada's bacon out of the fire. I also recall his Liberal roadies screaming bloody murder at the medicine required.
Currently he is shuttling back and forth to the U.K. advising them on how he did it. A much better Finance Minister than P.M. So it goes.
learningaswego 3/2/2013 3:49:07 PM Report

I was a fan of Paul Martin as Finance Minister too; but to judge any government or their budgets, you have to consider the context.
In 2000-01 the economy was booming, just about everywhere, and had been for a few years. So just about any Finance Minister could deliver good numbers under those conditions.
In 2008-09 we had just experienced -, with most of the rest of the world - THE worst financial meltdown since the Great Depression. We had a minority government, and the opposition DEMANDING "economic stimulus" (read: the government spends money it doesn't have). I remember the Lying Liar Jack Layton spouting on tv he was demanding stimulus spending of $40 Billion or so.
All Is Well 3/2/2013 4:18:17 PM Report

Weisen, Ontario deficit is at $11.3B, not the $18B you mentioned a couple of days ago, nor the $15B which you posted today.
Voiceofreason 3/2/2013 4:18:36 PM Report

Learning, this is a conspiracy according to Liberals everywhere. When they were in power, they had a surplus because they did their job better than the Conservatives could. That why we now have a deficit, right?

The fact that one of the worst recessions of the century hit us recently has nothing to do with it ;)

Anyone who needs more explanation than that needs to take a long walk on a short plank.
Wisenheimer 3/2/2013 4:21:42 PM Report

"As finance minister Martin made huge cuts scaling down the government to 1951 levels. His policy of cuts endangered the provinces ability to pay for social programs, health care and public infrastructure. In 1998 Martin introduced a balanced budget, an event that occurred twice in 36 years before 1997. In 2002 Moody's restored debt ratings to AAA. Martin was responsible for lowering Canada's debt to GDP ratio from 70% to less than 50. Martin is lauded in business and finance circles for the tough stances which made Canada a leader in the G7". The U.S. should ring him up!

statusquo 3/2/2013 4:31:49 PM Report

Politics aside for a second,

The global financial situation is without a doubt a mess!
If we think that as Canadians we are somewhat shielded from the inevitable fall out then we are delusional.
What I would advise ordinary folks to do is to get out of debt as fast as possible. And by that I mean all debt, consumer and mortgage debt. Use the opportunity now with the current low interest rates. Forget about RRSP contributions if you have any sort of debt.
Unless you're a savvy investor bank rates and mutual fund returns on your RRSP's will be negated or even eaten away by inflation.
Do with less and be prepared to work way past 65 as the times when government will take care of you is quickly coming to an end.
This situation was inevitable due to globalization and the zeal to de regulate everything .
It is what it is and to think that voting in some party will make things better is a pipe dream. Rare is the politician with a social conscience and the few that have it are being viciously sabotaged by various interest groups (see Obama).
There is a documentary called "A place At The Table" that chronicles the plight of millions of American kids that are under-nourished.
That a country as powerful as the U.S has folks going hungry shows how the so-called free market economy has not worked and will never work!
Surely, they can't all be lazy. Surely they can't all be solely responsible for their plight. Not on this scale.
The current economic disaster was not caused by free loading lazy asses, petty criminals or "lefties" or "righties" for that matter.
It was a disaster waiting to happen due to irresponsible and greedy financial institutions, playing with money they don't own and gambling without any regard of the consequences . An unregulated orgy of derivatives, hedge funds and sub prime mortgages.
Over the last 30 or so years the chasm between the really rich and the really poor has widened exponentially and the middle class has been decimated.
Something is off....really off!
And rather than finding a solution, partisan politics are the soup de jour, in here, our own little microcosm of arm chair know-it-alls and in Ottawa and, more seriously and with far reaching consequences, in Washington.
If I wasn't in this show, I'd be greatly enetertained watching it on TV as a new reality show called "F_cked"!

Voiceofreason 3/2/2013 4:36:01 PM Report

Want to hear a Liberal scream? Talk about how you want to privatize provincial liquor sales.

Of course, they'll tell you the LCBO employees are very responsible with checking ID. Privatizing liquor sales would have a detrimental impact on the public because private liquor stores won't identify people who are not of age (because, you know, they wouldn't be subject to the same laws regarding liquor sales to minors).

But it has nothing to do with the 100% tax markup the government hauls in on each liquor sale. That would be preposterous.

In a novel called L'Etranger (the Stranger) by Albert Camus, a man without any real feelings and who is sentenced to death for shooting a man on a beach without really knowing why, has his epiphany at the end when he looks forward to being greeted with shouts of hatred as he goes to his execution. It means that his life has meaning. There may be posters on here who have that same existential urge: "I am despised; therefore I am"

Status Quo...

I read your discourse and admire and agree with it mostly, it is a fine piece of analytical work. Plus I like the conclusion. The only bit I have a little bit of a problem with is taking advantage of the low bank rates, forgive me for being a bit of a devils advocate here, but as soon as the BoC and chartered banks see this type of trend they will be jacking up the interest rates as soon and as quick as they can. I can remember, back in the 80's when mortgage rates were in the 20% plus range, which was great if you had money to invest or lots of RRSP's. Now reducing personal debt is great and I whole heartedly agree with you, however most people are in debt for consumer items, which if not being bought will slow the economy, which in turn leads to more unemployment, and on and on and on. Also you have to remember that if people use their savings/RRSP's to pay off debts then they are vulnerable to not having sufficient for their retirement, which means they will work longer and then take/keep jobs from the next generation. As simple as it sounds to pay off all your debts, it can have a devastating effect on the countrys economy, banks will not have the money to lend out to people starting businesses, or companies wishing to expand, or home buyers, and this is the ripple effect. I know the BoC can print more money but you are then devaluing you currency, and this too can have an adverse effect. I wish I had a real answer to the financial situation that countries have got themselves into, but the only real answer is for the general population not to ask/want/demand services of government which have been provided in abundance. Now which have to be cut, (apart from the Senate which should go) what next? It is your choice if you want a government balanced budget!!!
Grump 3/2/2013 9:22:16 PM Report

Mallet how about cutting the millions that Harper is spending on self advertising for starters. Also how about cutting Civil Servants, the 375,000. whose average wage of 114,000 per annum that the Canadian taxpayers are coughing up for. Seriously though there are not many programmes that the various governments run that can be dropped without huge squeals from one lobby group or another, we have come to depend way to much on governments to do what we should be doing for ourselves, we have all come to rely on government to do vitually everything for us, and until that changes there is very little hope that any government will live within its budget...
