Toronto is getting the storm...missed us...it's a good morning!

I don't want to hear about low water levels in the future as every storm that misses us helps to lower the water table.

It's pink t-shirt day today. (anti bullying campaign)
I would suggest that the conversation remain civil even in the Blue Room...just for one day.
Having said that, I looked high and low for a pink t-shirt but I couldn't find anything so I decided to "borrow" a pink thong from Darlene. A wee bit tight but surprisingly comfortable. I actually like the feel.
Every once and again throughout the day I may have to....you know...."let the boys out for a walk"....but hey...it's for a good cause.
Have a splendid day everyone.

In the news that Canada-centric readers will ignore there is change coming in the US over gun control laws.
NY mayor Bloomberg is spending millions to support opponents of the NRA screwball defense of the 2nd Amendment.
Another win yesterday for disgraced Jesse Jackson old seat in Chicago.
Hizzoner has the money and means to cherry pick candidates who are opposed to the current laws on guns.
He knows how to win this battle - one seat at a time.
There is hope.
Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 10:43:55 AM Report

fly, so the fact that Chicago is already a gun free zone and leads the country in murders doesn't phase you in the least?
Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 10:47:31 AM Report

Plus, I'd like to see how Obama passes new legislation with a predominantly republican senate.
flyhawk25 2/27/2013 11:01:24 AM Report

VOR...that's what they're working on - changing the Senate one seat at a time over a hot issue.
Chicago is the poster city for what does not work.
But the heat is on Boehner's NRA fans and Tea Party iconoclasts.
Politicians may not know where their constituents live but they see voting trends.
The message is simple - tighten up gun controls or start looking for another job.
The NY mayor knows better than most what works - fear of losing an election.
Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 11:12:53 AM Report

Ah yes, how daft of me. Politicians will do anything for a vote. Carry on.
right wing 2/27/2013 11:13:53 AM Report

...change the 2nd amendment, O.K. good luck with that.

voiceofreason

"The fact that".....
Entirely true but good luck with facts on a lefty...you'd have more success with changing the 2nd amendment.

Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 11:20:03 AM Report

rw, I know. My posts yesterday did the trick in shutting some mouths, or should I say preventing a few keystrokes?
learningaswego 2/27/2013 11:25:34 AM Report

VoR - great points.
The fact that a city with the most restrictive gun laws still has one of the highest gun crime rates in the country - maybe in the western hemisphere - would be completely lost on lefty "logic".

Lefty logic is ruled by what "feels" good, or sounds or looks good - facts, evidence, what works, be damned.
right wing 2/27/2013 11:34:49 AM Report

There is a direct link to increased gun violence and poverty.
Since poverty is way up in the U.S. due to the economy could one not conclude that this increase in gun violence is Obama's fault due to his failure in leading his country to better economic times.
Now how is that for lefty logic.
It's all Obama's fault.

;)
Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 11:35:03 AM Report

Learning, thanks! It's sad that Canadians fell victim to this kind of mentality with the Firearms Act being proposed in 1995. I hope that the U.S. doesn't fall victim to the same ridiculous "feel good, sound good" type of legislation. Hopefully that's on the reverse with the demise of the long-gun registry and Vic Toews trying to loosen some nonsense restrictions.
flyhawk25 2/27/2013 11:42:35 AM Report

Even a minimal understanding of the 2nd amendment would reveal that its intent was for it to be coupled with a strong militia because there was no standing American army.
I have never suggested changing the amendment. Just viewing it in more than a Coles Notes context.
Most would agree that a world class military has taken the need for a strong militia.
But that kind of deductive reasoning appears to be lost on some.
Voiceofreason 2/27/2013 11:44:01 AM Report

fly, define a militia. It can be decentralized, as in the case of Switzerland. Every citizen can be called into action if government fails.
right wing 2/27/2013 11:49:48 AM Report

Trying to control gun violence perpetrated by violent people by increasing the "paperwork" needed for law abiding citizens to acquire a firearm is like trying to prevent an habitual impaired driver from driving by taking away his drivers license.

And also if you are not doing anything wrong why worry if the meetings are recorded?? Also when someone sits as chair of this committe, and at the time agreas to the building on wet lands, and has family is related to the builder is this not a conflict.. Just look at the way this person runs his council where he lives.. He likes to bully things his way.. Very sad for this committe to have allowed this, when they have stopped building in areas for a lot less.Maybe its time conflict was looked at here..

fly is absolutely correct. The Constitution need not be changed. There is such a thing as strict interpretation and loose interpretation of the Const. That is why it is to the benefit of the sitting gov't. to appoint Supreme Court Judges of their ilk. They will interpret according to their stripes.

Obviously, the interpretation of a well armed militia can be defined with a stricter interpretation.

White House, Republicans dig in ahead of budget talks
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Positions hardened on Wednesday between President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders over the budget crisis even as they arranged to hold last-ditch talks to prevent harsh automatic spending cuts beginning this week.

Looking resigned to the $85-billion in "sequestration" cuts starting on Friday, government agencies began reducing costs and spelling out to employees how furloughs will work.

Expectations were low that a White House meeting on Friday between Obama and congressional leaders, including Republican foes, would produce any deal to avoid the cuts.

We, as consumers, are getting taken to the cleaners again. There is no reason why gas should go up. It's just companies wanting to make record profits like the banks do.

Oldie Goldie 2/27/2013 6:08:07 PM Report

I don't care if you are a rightie or a leftie or inbetween you have to admit that Harper is going to defend his recent appointments to the Senate wherever they are.

That just makes Harper a stubborn old fool just like many of his Senators.

To make a claim that Mike Duffy is a resident of P.E.I.when he spends most of his time in his principal residence in Ottawa---carries an O.H.I.P. card and files his tax returns in Ontario is just a plain dumb statement.

Pamela Wallin has a Condo in Toronto and a Condo in New York but is a representative of Saskatchewan in the Senate is just another dumb statement by Harper that she is a resident of Saskatchewan. She also carries an O.H.I.P. card and files tax statements in Ontario.

The Senator representing Nunavut has rarely ever seen Nunavut.

One Senator a few years ago spent 9 months of the year in Mexico but that one can't be blamed on Harper because he is a Liberal.

How much more evidence do we need that these Senators are cheating Canadians and Harper defends them !

Harper campaigned on changing the Senate
He has a majority so we can't blame the Opposition now.

I don't believe that any Province would veto a Constitutional Amendment to change or abolish the Senate so let's go Harper---DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT !
AceOfBass 2/27/2013 6:22:40 PM Report

Doing more research I found this

section 242 A Municipality may,by bylaw or resolution, appoint a member of the council to act in place of the head of council or other member of council designated to preside at meetings in the municipality's procedure by law when the head of council or designated member is absent or refuses to act or the office is vacant, and while so acting such member has all the powers and duties of the head of council or designated member ,as the case maybe.

Rumors have been going around that the mayor has been missing in action since the election in 2010. This could explain why Councillors have brought up this issue.
right wing 2/27/2013 6:34:14 PM Report

Oldie Goldie

I agree that anybody on the Senate that has spent tax payers money in an inappropriate way should be called on it.
That being said...Harper has not defended any of them on this issue.
He did state that the travel expenses of Wallin looked to be in order and in line with others travel expenses, that was it.
Wallin is third in line behind two Liberal members of the Senate in travel expenses.
...and just for the record, I do agree that the Senate should be dismantled and was disappointed that Harper did not stick to this promise.
