Good morning sweet Soo!
MAJOR snow storm headed our way - Just for today wonder if we can tone down the end of the universe as we know it and appreciate the aesthetics of a soft white blanket covering all the dog poo and making all lawns equal. Let it snow.
itsky123 2/19/2013 6:27:33 AM Report

morning skipper

Don't mind the snow, gets me out of the house once and a while. The only real work out I get in the winter.
I just want it to stop for a while so what I shoveled will be noticed for a little while. lol
itsky123 2/19/2013 6:35:53 AM Report

Skipper
Going to have my morning cig, to get the coughing started, to see if the lungs are functioning, then my 2nd morning coffee with 3 sugar and milk, to get the blood pressure a test, then I'm off to shovel, I will see what shape I am in when I get done, or if you see a pile of snow out of place, thats me..lol..I died...lmao
Grump 2/19/2013 7:16:50 AM Report

Good morning all, Skipper I'm happy someone likes this damn snow. Itsky, knock off the smokes and sugar and in 6 months you will feel like Superman. I suspect you are about my age and there comes a time when that crap has to go. I was smoking 3 large a day when I quit and I can't think of anything that I wouldn't rather do than have to quit again. That said you start feeling better the longer you are off them. Have a great day everyone.

The City hasn't plowed my street in over a week so this new snow is filling in all of the frozen ruts making the driving smooth again. It sure would have been fun riding in an ambulance with an intovenous as our street had frozen ruts like you were driving off road with a 4 X 4. Worst snow plowing I've ever seen.
Mayor Deb wants to make the Soo Sr. friendly they can start by better plowing of sidewalks/roads.
flyhawk25 2/19/2013 8:37:55 AM Report

It looks pretty out there but if it freezes the PUC will have to raise my electricity rate again after they fix another problem.
And on my street the banks are so big it looks like the Alps. I wonder how Biggings Ave. - the narrowest street in town is doing?
FunMan 2/19/2013 8:48:15 AM Report

If our City Council didn't take a $ 2.5 million dividend from the PUC to balance their budget then the PUC would have funds set aside in a reserve to pay for future improvements for electricity and water. It's the typical case of pay me now or pay me later.
skipper dave 2/19/2013 8:48:39 AM Report

Quitting smoking for me was the toughest by far of any of my addictions that I have overcome. Quitting by my former spouse and I allowed us the method of financing our daughters university. What does it cost today to have two adults smoking in a household?
old-cat33 2/19/2013 9:06:49 AM Report

It's days like today that I'm glad that I bought a 4x4.
Just Curious 2/19/2013 9:13:24 AM Report

Skipper, quit in '91 when smokes were still 3 bucks a pack or less..At around 10 bucks a pack now I can't beleive people still smoke. When some one is bitching to me about being broke and not able to get by and they have a smoke in their hand, sympathy is on the short list..Took me 40 years to break the marriage habit tho, fell off the wagon 4 times..Cured now tho, didn't realizeow much cheaper dogs are to maintain..:)
right wing 2/19/2013 9:27:14 AM Report

Just Curious

Did you ever consider that having the propensity to compare a dog to a women was possibly the reason you were kicked off the wagon so many times.
itsky123 2/19/2013 9:39:33 AM Report

Grump,Sir

I hear ya, have cut down from 3 to 1 pack a day in the past year..trying.
In the summer I feel a lot better (working all the time ), winter time I have to be like the Canadian bear, and sleep until spring, get fatter, and like your name(grumpy)I only have 2 coffee per day, and the rest of the time I drink Tea(black),(trying) the weight loss thing,(no junk foods).
But thanks for the kick in the butt..lol, needed it...lol
Grump 2/19/2013 10:13:38 AM Report

Itsky as Skipper said it was also the hardest thing I have ever done but sure glad I beat it. I also quit when I was buying smokes in Saudi for 6.00 a carton. A son-in-law of mine went to the Doctor for help. He was a heavy smoker but the Doctor gave him a laser treatment on his eyebrow and one ear lobe. He said he didn't even have a craving for them. Me I was such a sweetheart that the fellows would walk around the office and come in the back rather than walk past my office. I'm a much nicer sweetheart these days .lol.
Just Curious 2/19/2013 10:17:35 AM Report

@rw

Naw,didn't learn really about the pet aspect until after the fourth relapse. It was her that wanted the dog,not me. Now she's gone and I still have the dog..Way more peaceful....:)
skipper dave 2/19/2013 11:17:28 AM Report

Just Curious - Sometimes we come to the table so gawd damn hungry that we settle for anything to eat. This time I drew up a wish list and it included more than just breathing.
- She must be financially independent (not a $25,000 visa bill on top of a maxed line of credit). Other words she has her own income.
-Non-smoker.
- Divorced as in married past tense. Papers signed all issues settled. Separation and Divorce are not the same word, ask Spelly.
- Intelligent, educated
- Caring and gentle with a sharp sense of humour.
- Sexy, I only pursued my wife when I saw her walking away from me.
Now if you are looking for someone to rescue then frequent the humane society.
Oh ya it's an important indicator that she has lots of friends.
And lastly how well we separate is the litmus test of how well we are doing as a couple. Don't want to be joined at the hip, too hard to breath.
Just Curious 2/19/2013 11:24:34 AM Report

Thanks Skipper, but have already learned those life lessons. Have no intentions of ever co-habitating with anyone or anything but my current pet ever again. I have now reached the point in life whereby I can admire a dish without needing to eat it. Early on in life when I was thinking with the other brain I will admit to some of the mistakes you mention..:)
Pink Peony 2/19/2013 11:26:36 AM Report

I had a doctor who would always tell me I should quit smoking...every single time I saw him despite the fact that I was very fit/healthy (I used to bike and hike a lot until my knees told me no). He had a great big fat belly. I got so fed up with his hypocritical lecturing one day that I pointed to his big fat belly and said to him, when you lose that big fat belly, then you can lecture me about smoking.

I think diesel fuel and all vehicles that run on diesel should be banned. While I was shoveling the end of my driveway (it's like lifting cement today), every time a diesel would go by, It made me cough and it stunk so bad. I never cough over a smoke like that!

As far as bad marriages go, it takes two to tango.

Grump, J C, et al..

This is one conversation I shall not join in. I met my better half while serving, she worked in the armory, and can field strip a 303 as quick as anyone. I was in my 30's when we got married and that's 40 odd years ago. I was told I could look but musn't touch. I really have no use for a third eye, thank you...
mallet 2/19/2013 11:45:07 AM Report

Skipper Dave and J C...

I quit smoking about 15 years ago, went cold turkey, hardest thing I think I have ever done in my life, but walking up some of the drifts underground and climbing the ladders got to me. Also Dr Gould got to me, having that little probe stuck up through the groin and being told that something wasn't quite right was also a great inspiration, two tests and two balloons later, was more than enough encouragement, plus of course the cost. I feel I support the government enough in other ways...

Budster 2/19/2013 12:10:25 PM Report

I smoked my last cigarette 2:45 pm Nov. 22, 1992 and I still have a craving for them occasionally. Like everyone else it was really hard and still is. Since I quit would you believe I now have 2 daughters that smoke ... go figure ... I occasionally remind them of the hastle they gave me when I still smoked. If ya don't start ya don't hafta quit. he he he
skipper dave 2/19/2013 12:25:22 PM Report

Hey, power back on in the west end! Nothing like a little power outage to remind us of how thin our veneer of modern civilization is. Knowing a little about electrical did you know that major substations can be taken out with a single shot 22 - Try ordering one of those off the shelf? They cost as much as a new corporate office building.
Just Curious 2/19/2013 1:05:29 PM Report

Mallet, that was funny. You're right, a third eye is definitely not attractive..:) And PP,it wasn't the dancing,it was the intermissions that caused the problems...:)Still talk to all my exes that are still alive...well,one can't talk without a lot of swearing, but still....

Budster... I started smoking as my mother was struggling to quit, herself. You'd have thought I would have learned from watching her, but at 20 we're invincible, right?

Fortunately I saw the light, and quit smoking -- three times! The third time for good... it's been 25 years, for me.

As for the discussion on snow removal, while I have driven down some very rough streets, overall I can only applaud our BoW for their snow removal efforts. Main roads have been kept nearly bare all winter, and bank removal has been ongoing.

To truly appreciate how good we have it, however, you have to have lived elsewhere, where snow "removal" doesn't happen.

In many cities - such as Hamilton - only main thoroughfares and bus routes get plowed; everything else is simply ignored. Yes, their snow typically melts within a week, but its a long week if you live 5 streets in from a main artery.

Other cities simply lay a blanket of salt down and hope for the best... which means lots of salty slush to wade through.

Really, we have it pretty darn good, here!

I thought this was the news room. I guess you guys can't see the news for the snow. Southwestern Ontario: my lawn has a few sparse patches of leftover snow but mostly yellowish grass, and yes I can see the dog poo. Leafs got second straight shutout last night with backup goalie. Would that be considered news?
Wicket 2/19/2013 1:52:37 PM Report

Shakey (and not our lovely Shakespeare - two different people although we often refer to the full name person as Shakey in a loving way - lol) as long as it is a topic of interest - it is news. And, if you could see what is going on in the Soo today, it is the MAIN news for the area. Keeps the criminals off the streets, the police have nothing to report and hey, thank goodness no one is talking about blah, blah, blah, blah politics.
You enjoy your day now - hear.
T-rat 2/19/2013 1:58:11 PM Report

The smoking issue is extremely important. I too kicked the habit after almost 50 years and it was one of the most difficult challenges but it is winnable. While butting out completely is the most important, we are human and most will have to try, try and try again. So, the 2nd most important thing is not to quit quitting. A couple of weeks back I mentioned a video clip on YouTube called 23 and 1/2 hours (a little exercise and adding years to life). Yes, on day one I broke the 20 minute mile (barely) on the treadmill but now I routinely do it in under 16 minutes and then add a 2nd mile just because I can.

I just got in out of this mess.
The major east/west streets are plowed as are those north/south.
That's pretty much it.
There's simply too much snow falling too fast to keep up.
Most folks are being careful but there are still clowns driving as if it's summer.
All the forecasts call for falling temperatures and high winds.
Conclusion?
Stay home unless you absolutely must go out.
In a few days this will be just another story to tell in the warm weather.
Left Winger 2/19/2013 2:53:14 PM Report

Where the he@@ are the plows - cars stuck on side streets, a-holes parkig on an already narrow roadway - saw one plow truck running around with its blade up....man, what a joke our city street cleaners are - anything to save a buck when I'm already taxed out the waazoo. The best is they are pouring the sllat and sand to it and there is over 6 inches of snow on the road...lmfao

Wasn't there any monies left over from the last two previous mild and light sonw winters?

I've just got in and I agree that the snow removal guys are keeping the main roads in great shape. Out on Third Line West there were some blizzard like conditions on occasions. The MIL's driveway out there has been done 3 times today, twice by me. I've done ours once and will hunker down in the the P patch and not bother doing it again until the plough goes by. Many people are navigating the sidestreets sideways as they believe that the deeper the snow, the heavier the foot on the gas.
