Grump 2/18/2013 7:04:32 AM Report

Good morning all, come on you lot this is a holiday not a sleep till noon day. Rise and shine, time is slipping by.
skipper dave 2/18/2013 8:36:37 AM Report

Good morning sweet Soo!
This is to be a clear fluids, little naps and a whole lot of listening to the collective wisdom of this group day!
Snobank 2/18/2013 8:38:09 AM Report

You're right, Grump, it sure does echo in here.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 8:38:30 AM Report

Dave or Grump: is your favourite mechanic located on Queen St?
BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 9:16:41 AM Report

Excellent mechanic. My car isn't in need of weekly attention, but I've had some things done and he is a detail guy. Had an oil change over Christmas break. Ended up with a new, necessary, fan belt and re-attached a heat shield around the catalytic converter that was rattling, all at the same time. You don't get that at an oil change shop.

You get the added bonus of a philosophy lecture while you wait!!
shakespeare 2/18/2013 9:23:38 AM Report

BB Thanks for the reference . I am thinking of moving away from the dealer, where I seem to be paying an arm and a leg. I just wasn't sure exactly where he is.
BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 9:28:44 AM Report

Get away from the dealer, for sure. especially if the warranty is up.

Don't know if he would appreciate me advertising his location. But, if you have fly's email, he'll know. Or he could give you mine.
Mr. Poster 2/18/2013 9:33:44 AM Report

These dealers put up some huge classy looking buildings and then we get hosed to help pay for them. My fav mechanic is on John Street..honest and reliable and a lot cheaper than the kingdom builders called dealers.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 9:34:20 AM Report

That's what I thought, but I don't have anyone's email. I know grump put his non-identifying email out once or twice.
flyhawk25 2/18/2013 9:36:06 AM Report

I had a bit of an epiphany yesterday.
I watched a documentary on 9/11 and Bush Lite.
It shed some light on my belief that he is a complete idiot. I came to the conclusion that he is not.
I don't think he is an intellectual heavyweight but he is compassionate and patriotic.
Granted he filled the message with cliches and sound-bytes but he is not an evil man.
I would describe him as being over his pay grade. He did his best to be a decisive leader. I also came away thinking he was being manipulated by his puppeteers - Rumsfeld, Rice and Cheney - to name three.
I ended up sympathizing with the guy. The Machine used him for eight years and than left him off future guest lists.
I could not help thinking that Romney would have been just another pawn in that whole charade He'd be president, look good, say the correct things and the real power brokers would get back to business as usual.
While I think Obama is an upgrade I am not convinced that as much as he aspires to greatness he won't get there.
So far the best chance America has to get back on track might be Chris Christie.
The question is whether or not he'll be anointed by the GOP machine.
BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 9:38:44 AM Report

Patched up my version of Darlene and, as any good service shop should do, gave her a test drive before releasing her back to me. Good as new!!

old-cat33 2/18/2013 9:42:17 AM Report

I still go to the dealer for an oil change and check over. Just watch for the specials on oil, lube and filter.
If there is something wrong with the ole girl all I do is order the parts and have my back yard mechanic put it on.It's still cheaper unless it's something major.
EricThe SHERIFF 2/18/2013 9:44:42 AM Report

Yesterday, someone mentioned the lack of blackbirds at their feeder.

I found them.

Well gotta get busy enjoy the Holiday everybody.

Shakey, without being too specific and from what I have gleaned from reading on here, he is located on Queen somewhere west of the bus terminal but before Gore St and on the north side; hope that helps.

Look out...a purple moon tonight.
I saw that also and pretty much agree with your take on it.
Presidents are at the mercy of those that surround them and supply them with information, advice, speech writing etc, some I believe are more influenced than others.
They all start out with the best of intentions.
It does make one wonder how Bush's presidency would have gone if 911 had not happened.
If there was ever a time for both parties to come together and work for the good of the country, this is it.
Each President has burdens to carry, I can't think of any occupation where you can actually watch them age 16 years in a period of 8.
B.B.B. should be posting shortly how we should mind our own business about our neighbour to the south.
Too bad for him if he does not understand that their business is ultimately our business.

BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 10:49:13 AM Report

If 9/11 hadn't happened, the Iraq war would have still happened. His presidency would still have been the same catastrophe it turned out to be!!

Dubya, Reagan and Senior, to a lesser extent, were all puppets. Hell, Reagan was, sadly, cursed with dementia for most of his second term. Who the hell do you think was calling the shots at that point?
BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 10:52:39 AM Report

Sorry Dutchie. It doesn't cover the fact that Dubya had no business at the helm. The Wizard of Oz had more say in the policies of the US.

Obama has had his own 9/11!! He inherited the Iraq mess, Afghanistan mess and an economic disaster of global proportions!!

He is trapped so far out in left field by his own crap conspiracy theories...consumed by an obsessive hatred of a U.S. president.

BIG BROTHER 2/18/2013 11:28:32 AM Report

No crystal ball required to see what already has happened. It's in the history books. Just a clear and open mind. A complete catastrophe.

I agree fly...Dubya looked like a deer in the headlights for 8 years, wondering what his next speech would be.

It has become the custom for the out-going president to leave a private letter on the desk in the White House for the new one.
I remember that first day when Obama stepped outside and he looked like he had seen a ghost.
I doubt if we will ever know the content of these letters but I suspect the enormity of the mess hit him.
I'd guess it might have read ...

Interesting link.

"if the pope did move permanently to another country, living in seclusion in a monastery in his native Germany, for example, the location might become a place of pilgrimage."

Mind boggling that hiding a person guilty of some of the worse cases of child abuse cover ups, people would make a place of pilgrimage.

She's smart, so I asked her "What does Prime Minister Day mean?".

I was waiting for something about Chretien or Martin, etc.

She replied, "Prime Minister Day is when Prime Minister Harper steps out of the Prime Minister Mansion, and if he sees his shadow, we have 4 more years of Bull Shit."

I've got to admire your evasions techniques, RW. Do you think they will work?
Brianne 2/18/2013 6:26:25 PM Report

rw,so, you condone job loss and service loss ? I knew you'd be the first to think that this is ok.

This isn't about the Postal service services, it's the JOB LOSSES . So quit trying to turn it around.

Thousands will lose their jobs........ where the heck else are they going to work ? Minimum wage jobs are the going thing, lots of them. Now there will be none cause that's the only place everyone will be working at......... so much for the young people , right ! Wrong, so very very wrong.

This is "our" money and "our" services this guy is messing with....... and we should be voting on whether or not we want good paying job losses in Ontario.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 6:58:46 PM Report

Oh no!! Brianne, I think I'm going to find myself on this issue on the same side as the arch-demon. Sure we want jobs, but they need to be relevant jobs. We no longer have blacksmiths, milk delivery and a myriad other jobs that were etched in our civilized society. I can say that 75% ... no make that 90% of my mail is junk. Most do their banking and bill-paying online and most communicate through email or twitter. Sure Aunt Maud from Manchester might still write a letter but it's not going to matter if it's a couple of days delayed. History has shown that you cannot hold onto jobs just for the sake of giving people employment (except the Senate).
Brianne 2/18/2013 7:06:10 PM Report

Shakey.. jobs are not plentiful like they used to be, and any job loss will hurt the economy.

How do you tell someone that's made a half decent living, sorry, but your no going to be working anymore. This is the only job you've had for 20 some odd years....... now what.........ei can only assist for so long...... then what.......... flipping burgers ?

I see it more and more each day...... the older generation ( 1960 babies) now working minimum wage jobs just to get by, barely. All the while, these are supposed to be young people's jobs ( kids in high school) it's sad.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 7:13:05 PM Report

Brianne: it can be sad or it can be an opportunity to get into something new. If you really look at mail delivery and compare its importance today to 20 years ago, the change is phenomenal. I know that it is often said to college students that when they enter a program that the job that they will get has not been invented yet. My son-in-law is an absolute example of that. I retired four years ago and the job that I had has morphed into something else.
Brianne 2/18/2013 7:16:13 PM Report

It will affect a lot of business that do shipping, mine for one. I have an online knitting and crocheting business, where items can be shipped daily from online purchases.
If I can't ship when customers order they aren't going to be happy waiting an extra 3 or 4 days from my end to ship. AS well as how long the delay in shipping will be to their end. This will make for a poor customer experience and no longer will make sales.

Trickle down effect. It will hurt a lot of people and businesses. Sure I could ship through another company, but people don't want to pay the high prices.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 7:16:37 PM Report

As an example, can you really think that a great job as travel agent 20 years ago makes any sense in today's world to a youngster, when the majority of people, myself included, can do a better job online?
shakespeare 2/18/2013 7:20:48 PM Report

I see your point Brianne, but I wouldn't mind waiting a couple of extra days for my knitted "willy warmer".
Off to watch a movie with my sweetie.
Have a nice evening, all.
Brianne 2/18/2013 7:20:59 PM Report

A travel agent is not a necessity. Mail service is a necessity for business.
shakespeare 2/18/2013 7:31:01 PM Report

all right, creative thinking, before I go ... maybe Canada Post could change their system to accommodate people like you and avoid daily service to people like me who are indifferent. Maybe you could register yourself and get the service you need (without extra cost), as Canada Post will be saving on people like me.
flyhawk25 2/18/2013 8:07:14 PM Report

In the 7+ years I have lived in this building I have not had 5 day postal service.
Nor has anyone else.
We usually get four days with regular service, one day of nothing for anyone and then dumped on one day.
The 'slow' day is usually either Friday or Monday.
When Canada Post delivers a box I get a notice to the effect that I was 'not home'. Baloney.
They deliver notices, I have to pick the article up at a 'Postal Centre' and that's it.
Now the outlet at Rome's is closed.
And postage keeps going up.
Do the math.
We cannot afford to pay people for five days who essentially walk and read.
Especially when they carry air for one of those.
I agree with shakespeare.
theprotector 2/18/2013 8:18:55 PM Report

thanks right wing for making fun of my disabillity yet again. We have been down this road before, you insist on attacking when you really dont have a position or are able to support your hatred for others who disagree with you.

I see you were unable to provide an answer. Although I fight daily with my disability I am highly educated and find it pathetic that you take a position on so many topics yet know little to nothing about them. An uneducated, limited opinion is a truly sorriful pathetic exsistance.
mallet 2/18/2013 8:23:53 PM Report

Canada Post at this time puts mail into the community boxes 5 days a week, not everybody drives the 30/40 km round trip everyday to collect it, so cutting down to twice a week would not hurt that much and parcels and registered mail has to be collect from the sub post office anyways, they just leave a form for you to collect it. If you have a business then they could service you on a daily basis on what they would be saving on cutting back on others.

The Protector...

What has harper done that helps us, Okay.

TFSA allows us to put savings into accounts that won't be hit with taxes. Do not forget that RRSP's when taken out are not TAX FREE just TAX DEFERRED, and althrough will be changed to RRIF"s when to that age, you have to take out 10% per year which can put you into another tax bracket...

INCOME SPLITTING, allows you to split your income with your spouse and allow you to save on paying some taxes.

Both of these help retirees, which we shall all become sooner or later, unless another government says thats unfair and changes back again.

You asked, and those are two things that they have done..
