Grump 2/17/2013 7:25:50 AM ReportGood morning all, time to drag your butts out of bed as the sun has burned a hole in the roof. Just sitting here pricing a job with my cup of tea and waiting for my gal to rise and cook my breakfast. See I'm no chauvanist I let her take her time. lol
DutchTouch 2/17/2013 7:30:48 AM ReportRise and shine everyone. A beautiful red sun is greeting us this morning.
Glad you're back Flyhawk. Take it easy Bud.
Wisenheimer 2/17/2013 8:05:35 AM ReportSpelly get out the list ... Look what Grumper
wrote!
skipper dave 2/17/2013 8:18:11 AM ReportGood morning sweet Soo!
Grump my dear man - It's -22 this fine morn and a question that has intrigued me. i'm an avowed weenie when it comes to the cold but have great admiration for those who work outside under these conditions. Do you get used to it, are there limits? And I'm sure you don't dress for fashion?
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 8:43:37 AM ReportI'm taking a break, Wisenheimer. I'm semi-retired. Perhaps I'll help Grump out though, with the word 'chauvinist'.
Wisenheimer 2/17/2013 8:46:51 AM ReportGot a Red- Bellied Wood Pecker in my back yard this a.m. Any birders out there familiar? Can stand a few wise remarks .. so shoot!
EricThe SHERIFF 2/17/2013 8:58:41 AM ReportWise,
I'm a bit of a birder. Still looking for a red-headed double breasted bed thrasher.
Grump 2/17/2013 9:02:55 AM ReportGood morning all again. Skipper I had more trouble adjusting to the heat in Saudi than to the cold here. I arrived in Saudi mid-summer and at 10.30 pm it was like stepping into a steam bath with no where to step out of it. It took me several years to become comfortable with it. I have survived 45 C and was at 60 below C once and at minus 45 C regularily working up north. I can't say if it's a matter of conditioning or no brain ,no pain. Either way I have managed to survive. Have a great one.
Grump 2/17/2013 9:05:18 AM ReportEric carefull those Thrashers are hard on the sheets and other things. lol
skipper dave 2/17/2013 9:05:49 AM ReportSpelly say it ain't so? I'm an inherently terrible speller and my grammar sucks - You have been personally responsible for making me aware just how bad I've slipped and there has been some improvement. Methinks you, like a good deal of us missed our calling. You are a gifted proof reader while I have always wanted to be a marine architect. Oh well, next life.
But there is hope, you said semi-retired? So now you don't drive trucks right?
skipper dave 2/17/2013 9:20:42 AM ReportOh here we go - Eric your thinking with the wrong head again, you know the one that drove you insane when you were seventeen.
When I was 21 my dear old Dad actually imparted a modicum of wisdom my way. I was dating a beautiful, drop dead gorgeous young lady and she was every seventeen year olds dream. Over endowed and stupid as a bag of hammers with short term memory loss to boot. I brought her home and introduced her to the family as the new Mrs. Right. After ten minutes of conversation with my Dad she moved on to my Mom. My Dad pulled me aside and tried to straighten me out but I was having none of it and knew he was jealous. After six months suicide was looking better as an option to escape my Klingon. What a god damn mess. So Eric make sure your thinking with the right head. I'm thinking some of the old goats on this site act as an advisory board for you.
EricThe SHERIFF 2/17/2013 9:35:10 AM ReportGrump & Skipper,
Thanks for the advice. I'm just repeating a joke I first heard in the 70's from a friend in Bruce Mines.
Thought I'd been blocked, but I had unchecked "accept cookies" so I could read some Ottawa rags.
DutchTouch 2/17/2013 10:02:00 AM ReportWisenheimer we have had a red bellied woodpecker at our feeder for several years......except this winter. Our bird must be lost and ended up at your place.
Please take good care of him.
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 10:03:02 AM ReportSpeaking of getting 'bumped/censored'...I read in the archives that while I was away some that SQ was banished for a while?
Whatever the case I'm glad to see that he is back.
Without his crazy perspective and a considerable amount of wisdom this site would be diminished.
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 10:05:04 AM ReportSkipper, Eric is an older goat than me and he comes by his moniker fairly accurately.
EricThe SHERIFF 2/17/2013 10:23:45 AM ReportSpellchecker,
I "resemble" that remark.
I'm 75, this April. Still haven't figured out who you are yet.
I'm a daily reader of this site.
old-cat33 2/17/2013 10:58:37 AM ReportNo black birds this year around the feeder? There is the odd black squirrel that is about two seconds faster than my Poms and of course the sloppy pigeons.
mallet 2/17/2013 12:02:26 PM ReportDutch and Old Cat...
Got lots of chickidees and the odd blue jay, a few squirrels, but we also have a couple of eagles who do a fly past roughly every other day, no blackbirds or grackles yet, a bit cool for them..
Snobank 2/17/2013 12:07:36 PM ReportI went to high school with Spellchecker. As far as I know, I haven't laid eyes on him since. I know a couple of other identities as well but I won't break confidence. I will say that many of you are nicer people in person than you come across online. Now why would that be?
goldie 2/17/2013 12:09:09 PM ReportI have a Floridian woodpecker off of my deck. So many birds in the south lat
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 12:25:13 PM ReportSnobank, I had no idea. Any clues?
Mr. Poster 2/17/2013 12:25:31 PM ReportMY FEEDER IS STILL FULL. Are all these birds now eating someplace else? I have yet to see a bluejay and as far as those nice brown squirrels...they seem to have been run out of town by those cat sized black squirrels.
Snobank 2/17/2013 12:40:02 PM ReportSpelly, I assume you are asking about why some people are nicer in person than online. I think it's partially the online anonymity coupled with the time, effort and ability it takes to writing a nuanced reply to or about a position taken. Laziness in writing, or fatigue, can lead to staying rigid in a position. It is so much easier to debate in a friendly manner face to face than on line. If someone else changes your thinking a smidgen you can mention this without appearing to have totally abandoned your position. On line this is very rare. I could go on but I, like many others, am fatigued at trying to make a point imperfectly in writing, that I could express easily with eye contact and body language to support what I was speaking aloud.
Does that make any sense or am I off base?
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 12:57:48 PM ReportSounds good to me. Actually Snobank, I was looking for a clue to your identity. Collegiate or Tech, and how about initials?
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 12:58:38 PM ReportSnobank...makes perfect sense to me.
That is the rationale behind the summits.
For example - I have met Skipper Dave but neglected to get his e-mail address to my sorrow.
It is simple to e-mail Spellchecker but his service is from the last century. Hence the frequent jaunts to the Tiltin' Hilton.
Your analysis of the why of some comments resonates with me.
Wisenheimer 2/17/2013 1:11:26 PM ReportKeeping comments pithy and wise is the trick. More than one paragraph and the eyes glaze. Someone once opined "brevity is the soul of wit".
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 1:20:17 PM Report'Tis.
right wing 2/17/2013 1:23:28 PM Report...you went to high school with Spellchecker?
Was that the one room high school....
;)
Wisenheimer 2/17/2013 1:25:51 PM ReportT'aint!
nanag 2/17/2013 1:27:30 PM Reportmy mother went to Tech.. she grew up on Woodward Ave.
Snobank 2/17/2013 1:28:23 PM ReportSpelly, S C I is supreme, throughout the land. That's about all I want to say about that for now.
Fly, I'm pretty sure I have your identity narrowed down from clues you and former students have dropped. Of course I won't name names here.
Logically you guys have belied my argument by agreeing with it on line. A paradox or are you both just reasonable people?
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 1:30:33 PM ReportRight wing, I'll have you know I went to the world renowned Soo Collegiate Institute,
SCI is supreme
Throughout this land
Ever by SCI we promise that we'll stand
Striving the right to do we'll never shy
Ever by SCI we'll lift her banner, lift her banner high.
Labor Omnia Vincit Improbus
After flunking there, I took a 2 year hiatus and returned to the highly acclaimed Sault Ste. Marie Technical and Commercial High School.
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 1:32:23 PM ReportI hope that I am and have great affection and respect for Spelly.
Each of us adopts a personna on here but I doubt that is much insight into what we really think.
Most of the time I treat this as a pleasant diversion.
Spellchecker 2/17/2013 1:33:22 PM ReportSnobank, thanks for the clue.
Snobank 2/17/2013 2:18:05 PM ReportSpelly, you're welcome.
Fly, I agree.
RW, about what years did you attend SCI?
Did you know that some people that atended SCI are still on the site?
BIG BROTHER 2/17/2013 2:32:22 PM ReportSnobank,
You are correct about the patience required online, as opposed to in person, face-to-face talk. The nuances and facial expressions are lost on-line and therefore, sometimes a person is mis-interpreted on-line. Each of us has a different timeline to meet, in our daily activities. I sometimes feel I'm being unfair, since I don't have the time to spend explaining every detail of what I may have stated.
mallet 2/17/2013 2:36:43 PM ReportSpellchecker....
I was browsing the BBC news and came across a word I had not seen, or cannot remember seeing .. "PROSELYTISING".. seems this is now an offence in one of those ARAB SPRING DEMOCRATIC countries so greatly thought of by the western powers that be. Maybe we should in Canada set up a preventive office to make sure our democracy is not being subjected to outside influences,Eh!
Budster 2/17/2013 2:48:53 PM ReportYes there are a fews of us old SCI'ers left, and every once in a while I see them around town.
Had a nice chat last Mon. with a former Sci'er the likes I haven't chatted with since my kids left the school he taught at. Great fond memories we shared.
itsky123 2/17/2013 2:57:00 PM ReportGood afternoon all
Had to go to the doctor on friday, he gave me a prescription to get filled out, so off I went to get it filled.
Boy was I embarassed when I received it.
( singing ) I'm a big kid now .
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 2:57:15 PM ReportAt St. Mary's College as a kid SCI athletics was the gold standard we aspired to.
They beat our brains out for many years. Years later many of us all became friends but in the late fifties and early sixties it was terrible to be part of the athletic slaughter.
Now of course SCI is gone and SMC's original site is scheduled for demolition.
Sic transit gloria mundi...
right wing 2/17/2013 3:25:59 PM ReportSnobank
I was a West End boy...Korah Collegiate, early 70's...I am much younger than you fellas.
;)
Grump 2/17/2013 3:40:38 PM ReportGood Lord you old foggies sure go back a long way. Both my wife and I were finished there in the mid-fifties but hadn't met at that point. One of our daughters graduated the last year, somewhere around 1978 I believe
shakespeare 2/17/2013 4:42:40 PM ReportMy high school (grammar school) dates back to 685 AD (5th oldest in the U.K.). Just found out that they began accepting girls (yuck) in 2002.
Oldie Goldie 2/17/2013 4:55:17 PM ReportGive a cheer--give a cheer for the boys who drink the beer in the cellars of old S.C.I.
With a guzzle--guzzle--guzzle as they pour it down their muzzle
Stand up and holler out " More Beer "
Anyone else besides me remember that one ?
mallet 2/17/2013 5:00:10 PM ReportShakespeare....
You got me beat there. My school only dates from the 11th century, was closed and reformed in the 16th century, and is still going strong. Of course there is a strong religious leaning but it has this peculiar idea that as your parents are paying for your education then you shall be educated, however painful that maybe.
flyhawk25 2/17/2013 6:09:19 PM ReportSQ...if that does not get you banned pal...God bless you.
Nothing like pushing the limits of free speech.
I am not offended but that is just silly.
nanag 2/17/2013 6:33:47 PM Reportvery visual type description :)
skipper dave 2/17/2013 7:16:23 PM ReportShakey - Did your grammar school have some really big stones set around it?
theprotector 2/17/2013 7:18:22 PM Reportim about due for another banning....
right wing 2/17/2013 7:32:01 PM Report...lucky 7 ?

Pink Peony 2/17/2013 9:57:19 PM Reportshakespeare, LOL! No! He is handsome though, don't ya think? He looks Really Healthy and Content, Happy to me. He's Beautiful!!! He's a result of compassion, empathy...
