Bad Dawg 2/16/2013 9:00:58 AM ReportHarper says it's "perfectly reasonable" that Canadian tax payers pay this much for senators travel expenses..
"The cost of Wallin's travel — she billed taxpayers $142,190.26 for trips between March 1, 2011 and Feb. 29, 2012 — is perfectly reasonable, Harper said during another barrage of House of Commons questions about Senate conduct.
Curiously, only $10,551.99 of Wallin's travel expenses were declared as travel between Ottawa and Saskatchewan. The remaining $131,638.27 was filed under "Other."
nanag 2/16/2013 9:07:55 AM ReportGood Morning Everyone
Pardon while I whine
I had to take the weekend off cuz I've hurt my back. Went to Chiro yesterday..it hurt so much I actually teared up. He said I'm a mess. Can't sit much, can't stand much, laying down is okay for a bit but getting back up is brutal. I'm a hurting unit.
Living alone is ,for me , usually great. But when you have nobody to whine to, you have to do for yourself..and that sucks. "Pam, Pam, can you call my Mom?"
skipper dave 2/16/2013 9:20:52 AM ReportGood morning sweet Soo!
Day off here and I'm debating a pretty heavy schedule. Grilled cheese for my step Son, Egg whites for my Step daughter and scrambled for me. Wash up, and decide what book to read and what time to schedule my nap. The misses is at a CPR course for the day I'm convinced she will be missed but we will survive.
I have listened to a few of you expressing despondency about the dark side if human beings and how things are rapidly going down the toilet. I have the opposite view as some may have gathered. I believe with the advent of global information and news, we are evolving - It's like cleaning out an old closet, the brighter the light we use the more crap shows up. I'll try to list a few:
Domestic violence, today front and centre.
Mass Genocide can and has been mitigated.
Increased divorce, a good thing for women in their struggle to be treated as equals.
The corruption in our government is more difficult to hide.
The children - We are recognizing that the war on drugs does not work and redirecting our resources to treating them at a younger age is the step in the right direction.
Belief in God - I can without fear stand up today and say, uh, uh don't work for me and have no fear of being thrown on a bonfire for not singing the party song.
Our impact on the environment is on the table now?
These are but a few issues that are discussed on this blog on a daily basis. When in the last thirty years (the good old days) would we have had the fortitude or time and method to discuss at this level?
Grump 2/16/2013 9:51:07 AM ReportBad Dawg The level of entitlement that our Politicians and First Nations have come to expect as the norm certainly is a little hard to swallow as a taxpayer. I have to think it is time they all gave their heads a shake before taxpayers demand it.
Just Curious 2/16/2013 10:07:22 AM Reportnanag; Can totally identify with you on that one..Was a bit stiff when I got up this AM and when I went to walk Sir Muttly the first thing I did was slip on an ice patch before my back got limbered up.. In agony, surrounded by pillows and sucking up liptons cup of soup.Going upstairs to the bathroom is a challenge.:)Rest, relax, take lots of Ibuprofin and a glass of wine. This too shall pass...:)

Just Curious 2/16/2013 10:30:13 AM ReportBad Dawg; that was tongue-in-cheek.. I'm sure nanag knows what is best for her. It's what ever works for the individual. Myself I try to stay away from the pills as much as possible. I sympathise with you, tho, have suffered back problems most of my life..No fun,for sure...
Bad Dawg 2/16/2013 10:32:48 AM ReportI see lol keyboards need a sarcasism font :)
old-cat33 2/16/2013 10:33:03 AM Reportnanag:Also have a back problem (L5)disc.
Put on an ice pad,the idea is to take the swelling down. Check on line how to do those sacroiliac stretches and take your time doing them. Then pop an Ibuprofen 400 mil. for inflammation and relax with a pillow between your legs. Squeeze the pillow between your knees.Do about three sets for a count of 8-12 seconds.
Oh and stay off the damn couch! That's gotta be the worst piece of furniture for relaxing on or laying down on.
right wing 2/16/2013 10:46:43 AM ReportGood lord shakespeare your link was as bad as a run on sentence.
Completely agree with your statement though.

right wing 2/16/2013 11:19:06 AM ReportJustin Trudeau is under heavy criticism from both his own and opposition parties for making over 270,000 for speaking engagements since he became an MP.
Something the majority of them do for free.
He billed the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic School Board in Kingston 15,000 for a 30 minute speech and billed an extra 780.00 for limo service.
My they learn young don't they.
BIG BROTHER 2/16/2013 11:41:02 AM ReportThere is a price to pay when you want the best, even in speakers. Soon people will be able to listen to Harper...free...as he will be looking for something to do. It's simple economics...supply and demand. Besides, Trudeau needs the money. He subsists on teacher wages!!
flyhawk25 2/16/2013 11:47:47 AM ReportThe rumors of my demise...
It must have been quiet around here for even right wing to voice wonder at my absence.
Like so many others on here I have some health issues. But I choose not to air them in a public forum.
The quick answer is that I drove to London with an old friend for a consult and tests with a surgeon at Victoria Hospital.
I will return in two months for a week.
However some observations on my experience there versus here.
The difference is startling.
Granted it is a teaching hospital and the scale is much larger. In spite of ongoing construction the place runs in a professional friendly manner. That in itself put me at ease.
Consequently in spite of a fairly intrusive operation on the horizon my stress level went from 9+ to just over 1.
But that is the reality of choosing to live here. Our system -in spite of a new hospital- is best portrayed as the minor leagues compared to the south.
Having said that I made the decision to live my remaining days out here with proximity to St. Joe Island in the summer and beer on the deck in Hilton with Spelly. My kids are here and my roots and my heart are as well.
Just Curious 2/16/2013 12:12:21 PM ReportFlyhawk; I too am down here for a couple of surgeries but instead of going back and forth,I chose to stay here with Family for the winter.Get my next one the end of this month and again in early May. Yes,the difference in care is unreal. Everything is proffesional yet comforting and people are actually happy and smiling. The Dr explained everything in detail as to the surgery and also the followup and you walk away just knowing it's gonna be good..Unlike you,my family is all down here and this was to be a maybe move down here to spend the rest of my days but it's just not to be. The Soo,with all it's warts, has been my home for over 30 years and two wives and it's where I'm coming back to in the spring,or as soon as I'm cleared by the Drs. Miss the place terribly. After 30 years away from here, tho I was born and raised here,I find myself at loose ends and don't know a soul anymore. Everything has changed and I am no longer part of it..No idea what your problem is but I wish you the best of luck with it and you came to the right place...:)
Bad Dawg 2/16/2013 12:15:50 PM ReportI for one am tired of them spending my money foolishly....put them on minimum wage because it is, how they say "such a privledge to serve the Government"
I guess a future headline may read Harper Surrenders Canada's Sovereignty and Natural Resources to China, America, India.
skipper dave 2/16/2013 12:56:07 PM ReportGood to hear from the mobile medical relief unit. No doubt in my mind we sacrifice our level of care by living here. it's a conscious choice I make to be here in the Sault. I try to mitigate the negative effects by making sure I have knowledgable people advocating on my behalf and like "fly" gets me a level of care is that is adequate. It's all a trade off. I could retire tomorrow and walk away from a job I love, I could move to southern ontario and disappear into an old folks home and be closer to my daughters but lose out on my new family which I adore. I could sell my boat for a fair chunk of change and walk away from my dream. No thanks folks, I'm just the right distance from my grandkids and daughters, I am just the right distance from my former spouse who lives in Toronto with my her new hubby. I am just now at the stage in my life where I enjoy my company and that allows me to be just the right partner for the best kept secret in Sault Ste Marie. So the occasional drive for better health care is a small trade off. Thankfully my passion is not that of a casual acquaintance of mind who loves to prospect in the far north on his own and would not have it any other way cause it's just right for him - get it?
skipper dave 2/16/2013 1:01:45 PM ReportKeep seeing the AD for David "O" on this site and it's a constant reminder of how unselfish the young man is when he graciously steps down in this next election (booted out) and be willing to let the voice of the people speak to whom is best for us! Wow what a guy! This is the great part of getting older, you can stand up and say your full of ka,ka,poo, poo.
flyhawk25 2/16/2013 1:42:29 PM ReportSkipper...re. David O - this from my local surgeon - "I am tired of being a travel agent for David Orazietti".
That pretty well sums up our MPP's 'putting you first'.
Just Curious 2/16/2013 1:52:21 PM ReportSkipper; Funny you mention that, that the Soo is just the right distance from family..:) I am finding that since I have been here myself. Life was so much more peaceful living 500 miles away from the problems and sibling squables. Always had serious doubts about moving back and this short stint of it has proven me right.. The kids made their choices in life and now have to live with them. I was much happier living by myself with nobody but myself to answer too or make decisions for me..Love my kids but it is true, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Coming back home as soon as possible...To quote you...Ah,Sweet Soo.....:)
mallet 2/16/2013 2:08:11 PM ReportJ C...
I just love old sayings they have so much truth about them... You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family.... so true... One sibling I like, the other, best left unsaid. Children, grand children, great grand children, nice to see for an hour, then the novelty evaporates, then the pain in the neck or lower sets in, or the memory returns... I like to feed the GK's and GGK's with chocolate and sweet stuff and then hand them back and when asked why do you do that .... PAYBACK....
flyhawk25 2/16/2013 2:12:56 PM ReportJC...I agree.
My circumstances are a bit different.
I have a grown daughter on ODSP who has mental health issues.
We both live in our own apartments in the same building and help each other.
My son and his fiancee live in town and are close enough but not too close.
It all works for us.
In a perfect world I would be fifty, look like Tom Selleck and be rich. I am not.And I do not.
But I can say that getting back last night was a blessing.
And that is enough.
bounder 2/16/2013 3:50:07 PM ReportAs I read the latest post on pain, bad back, sore all over, aches,I would venture to say most of us are overweight, that causes a lot of bad hurts..I've lost 20 odd pounds and do want to lose another 10 minimum,5ft 11in. tall I hid 217lbs very well..I feel much better,my sore hip is not so sore. I've found a whole new wardrobe in my closet. No special diet ,just cut out bad food and eat 1/2 of what I use to eat.I use to have a dickydoo, you must know that one, your stomach sticks out further than your dickydoo.Try it it can't hurt you that's for sure.
theprotector 2/16/2013 3:55:01 PM ReportIt was so great today at 3pm to see a gmc police vehicle marked supervisor on the side pick up his girlfriend at the gym and give her a ride somewhere.
I didnt know Chief Davis had a personal use policy while on duty. It must be so convient for the local police to be able to do this while getting paid and not having to worry about the safety of their loved ones leaving the gym in the middle of the day. Now I know why I pay the taxes. I thought it so wonderful I took pictures LOL
skipper dave 2/16/2013 5:21:27 PM ReportThere has never been a Mr. Orazetti - Just a guy who lapped up the party song, never once standing up for his constituents and whose driving ambition is going to have to force his medical trip out of town in order to be surgically removed from Dalton's fundamental orifice and delicately re-inserted into the new leaders ah what's ya call it. All the while putting us first.
flyhawk25 2/16/2013 6:11:29 PM ReportBingo!
Bad Dawg 2/16/2013 6:35:15 PM ReportI'm not overweight.... 178lbs very active in sports, playing with my kids and dog. The wife even got me doing yoga, which actually helps a lot.
Going to a fast food place for a salad is like going to a hooker for a hug.
Why can't fast food places refuse service to help fight obesity?
We have discouraging warnings of health problems on cigs, why not pics of heart attacks and overweight peoples bed sores on fast food wrappers??
*theprotector where would one find those pics?? you could make a youtube clip....
All Is Well 2/16/2013 7:11:14 PM ReportCome on Skipper, isn't Mantha doing a great job for you in Algoma? I guess I am old enough to say ka ka poo poo, too.
atticus 2/16/2013 8:13:10 PM ReportNews ... from Chicago ... Sault Ste. Marie style.
The young folk from White Pines did an awesome job. Something tells me that a certain teacher or two didn't withdraw their extra curricular hours. Thank you so much! You have all insprired my own children. Way to go!!
Grump 2/16/2013 8:26:10 PM ReportWell all you fellows complaining about David O. have damn short memories. I guess you liked the lean years of nothing but B.S. from Tony, certainly no money coming in here for anything. Then again maybe you would like to have another zero like Bryan Hayes. David has worked hard for the Sault and brought home the bacon. Moaners like some of you lot are the reason the Sault has had so little for so long. Fellows like you are the reason Harper is where he is tearing everything good about Canada apart while running up the debt higher and higher. I'm not going to argue about Dalton but he ran his bill up building and supporting schools and hospitals. Harper has run his bill up with more Senators, self advertising and taking care of his friends. You moaners deserve whatever you get.
statusquo 2/16/2013 8:53:11 PM ReportThe reality is that Northern Ontario and the Sault is the unwanted stepchild.
Not much influence in the scheme of things and at the mercy of more populous ridings. David O. is a career polititian and he does what he can.
He is slick and smart. But he is first and formost a "politician".
Not any political party is going to do or CAN do squat about our station in the great white- upthere- somehwere -north.
If you want a voice, move south and shut up.
Federally we voted out Tony Martin. Now we got Hayes. We might as well have voted in a bag of hammers. The results would be more or less the same.
Peterson was an arrogant prick....in comes the NDP with Rae....he got tossed...then comes Harris ...an arrogant and drunken idiot..almost ruined the Province....now we have an unsavoury prune with a douchebag agenda...I say...elect me...statusquo...running on a platform of a nuclear powerstation in every township...tearing down all windmills, a single, secular schoolboard dedicated to teach math and science and not some touchy-feely "respect" for questionable ideologies such as Christianity or Islam, a centrally run healthcare system with one CEO making no more than a Tim Horton's night manager and no car allowance. How much worse can it be?
Legalizig any and all drugs...heck...subsidising drugs!! Thereby reducing the police force by 50%.
Banning all Walmarts and mosques, immigration reform focusing on people with a trade and proficiency in the English language. Making Canadian Tire money legal tender, dismantling the welfare system and raising the minimum wage to 25 dollars an hour.
Banning credit cards and any and all Tim Hortons, any "drive throughs" and subsidizing Canadian made thermoses.
Re- instituting the death penalty for overcooked pasta and pineapple or pepperonies on pizza.
A new provincial anthem by Bob Dylan "The Times They are A Changing".
I know my platform is draconian but it would work!
statusquo 2/16/2013 8:57:58 PM ReportAnd one more thing!!!
If you MUST ride your bicicle in the winter at night....buy some decent reflectors!!! I almost killed you on Wellington Street.....Idiot!!!

Snobank 2/16/2013 9:13:35 PM ReportWow! What a dystopian day of comments on this site. Is there anything in or about the Sault or its representations you guys/gals approve of?
statusquo 2/16/2013 9:25:07 PM ReportSnobank,
The Sault is a great place.....wouldn't want to live anywhere else...well...maybe...Monte Carlo, lying naked on a couch, being fed grapes by voluptuous nymphomaniacs.
Truth is.... we can't bake our cake and eat it too. I love to complain....I would find fault in Jesus. (he didn't cross train).
The main issue of today's ramblings was healthcare and the lack of it.
The facts are that the province is out of money. Years of mismanagement, a top heavy bureaucracy re-inventing itself and a lack of vision.
I honestly don't know how to fix it and all I can do is bitch about it.
nanag 2/16/2013 9:49:05 PM ReportStatusquo
I would vote for you :)
I don't much care for pizza but what is wrong with pepperoni on it??

mallet 2/16/2013 9:53:15 PM ReportSure you do Status...
You run it like a business, what you need, not what you want or think you want. You give value for money, taxpayers money, not money you do not have yet, no more mortgaging the next few generations to satisfy every lobby group that comes along. No more hand outs to failing companies only secured loans, if it is a reasonable request. Yeah, Yea, I know, can't be done, too many people could get hurt, unfortunately this will happen sooner or later, and then watch the fur fly....
