The Popes may be 70 to 80 but the main problem seems to be that they still think this is the 16'th or 17'th century. It makes it damn tough for their clergy trying to make a difference in this century.

The best news I have heard in a long time -Ratzinger is resigning the papacy.
The chorus of relieved People of God worldwide might create a tsunami.
From a purely corporate viewpoint he has managed to do more damage to a once vibrant entity than any of the other
popes in my lifetime.
There is a reason that churches are closed and the ones that are still open are half empty.Perhaps now the promise of Vatican II will be realized.

A lot of people get on here complaining of racism and inequality so I am going to rant on here too. I took my 2-1/2 and 3-1/2 to McDonalds Playland on Friday (yes I know terrible mother feeding them that crap they call food but that's a different topic) and my little 2-1/2 year old son seen another kids spider man boots and got excited and tried them on. I quickly caught him and apologized profusely to the 6-7 year old child they belonged to. This child began throwing a huge fit throwing coats and boots and yelling that first white man takes his land and now his boots, you white people take everything from us. Excuse me? You are at tops 7 what do you really know of the situation? My kids are being raised that it doesn't matter if you are white, black, brown or pink with purple polka dots we are all the same. I am sick of hearing that every white person is a racist when it is obviously being instilled in native children at a very early age that anyone who is white is a thief. It truly saddens me that there is little hope things will change with the next generation of this country when very few from this generation of any colour are willing to put aside their prejudices to work together rather than against each other even for our children.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took to Fox News Sunday to explain that America does not have a spending problem. “It is almost a false argument to say that we have a spending problem. We have a budget deficit problem,” Pelosi insisted.

(try that one with your personal banker)

Pelosi’s motion was seconded by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) on NBC’s Meet the Press, where Durbin laughably explained that the sequester was “designed as a budget threat, not as a budget strategy” – and stated that the only approach to solving the budget problem was to raise taxes again.

...and once the U.S. has "cleansed" itself of all those "rich evil" folks the economy will forge ahead.
Poor frigging America.

flyhawk25 2/11/2013 9:14:27 AM Report

Ratzinger -aka Pope Benedict Arnold - was in charge of the Society for the Propagation of Faith prior to getting this gig. That is the Catholic equivalent of the CIA and Homeland Security.
Under his dictatorship he put more people 'to silence' than Rex Reed at a Justin Beiber concert.
His 'election' was a coup for the neo-con element of the Vatican and a clear signal to progressive liberation theologians, females and advocates of greater lay participation that the thumb screws were coming out.
This news will have at least three of my close friends - all former priests - rejoicing and screaming 'gaudeamus'.
The church is awash in scandals and lawsuits and many dioceses and religious orders bankrupt. Both financially and morally.
Now let's forget the bullshit about divine intervention in the next papal election and pray that the new majority of third world cardinals elect someone with vision and faith.
Don't hold your breath.

Agreed.
...some of the fools, regardless of which political party, are bigger than others.

This is the next paragraph from the same news release.

"President Obama himself agreed with that perspective in his weekly online address. The budget sequester he signed off on – the sequester proposal he insisted upon – is now the Republicans’ fault. Obama claims that if the sequester goes through, “firefighters and food inspectors” will bear the brunt of the cuts, as well as cancer research and people with disabilities. It’s the usual liberal demagogic approach to any problem: world to end tomorrow, minorities hit hardest."

What do you believe the jail sentence should be when a person in the ultimate position of trust commits a sexual assault.
An assault that throws the victim into a living hell.
A hell that rages in her head 24/7 and will take years to recover from, if she ever completely does.
There have been two crimes committed, one against the victim the other against society.
This is our Canadian "justice system".

Flyhawk: I am not arguing against you with your view/opinion on the current Pope. I do however, take offence at your reference to Benedict Arnold. Your USAnian background is shining through. In fact, Benedict Arnold did not betray anyone! He was a loyal officer of the British forces and yes, a spy. Bear in mind that George Washington and his followers were the revolutionaries who rebelled against the legal government of the day.

I tend to view the character Scrooge differently too, because, at the end of Dickens' book, this man was noted for his goodness and charitable ways, but people today still use his name to denigrate someone who is stingy.

Further regarding the Pope:
Ratzinger not first choice for Pope

As I understand it, Ratzinger was not the Cardinals' first choice. That was, interestingly, Cardinal Hans Grapje.

Grapje was raised in a Catholic school in The Hague and, as a young man, aspired to become a priest, but was drafted into the Army during WWII, and spent two years co-piloting bombers until his aircraft was shot down in 1943 and he lost his left arm. Captain Grapje spent the rest of the war as a chaplain, giving spiritual aid to soldiers, both Allied and enemy.

After the war, he became a priest, serving as a missionary in Africa,
piloting his own plane (in spite of his handicap) to villages across the
continent. In 1997, Father Grapje was serving in Zimbabwe when an
explosion in a silver mine caused a cave-in. Archbishop Grapje went down into the mine to administer last rights to those too severely injured to move. Another shaft collapsed, and he was buried for three days, suffering multiple injuries, including the loss of his right eye. The high silver content in the mine's air gave him purpura, a life-long condition characterized by purplish skin blotches.
Although Cardinal Grapje devoted his life to the service of God as a
scholar, mentor, and holy man, church leaders felt that he should never
ascend to the Papacy. They felt that the Church would never accept a
one-eyed, one-armed, flying purple Papal leader.
Pink Peony 2/11/2013 11:08:50 AM Report

right wing, the father used all the right words so that the sick twisted system would only give him a slap in the wrist. That little girl will NEVER completely heal from that. Her life has been changed forever. He may find out what it feels like to be violated. From what I understand, folks in jail don't take too kindly to those who hurt children.

G3...to put the reference into the context I intended.
Arnold is viewed in popular mythos as a traitor and that was my intent.
Ratzinger in my view betrayed the public trust.
We're both aware that someone's freedom fighter might be another some one's terrorist. Just as the Jesuits labeled NA natives 'les sauvages' we know that the winners get to write the histories.
Ask any theology professor at random in a Catholic university - off the record - what they think of this pope.
Finally - I've been in classes where the local bishop showed up to 'monitor' a theologian's class. And that same prof was removed before the course ended.
The only reason Ratzinger did not commit religious genocide is because he did not have the means or opportunity.
The guy makes Dick Cheney look like Mother Teresa.
In his world Jesus would not have been allowed to live as long as he did. And I won't go to hell for saying that.

When the resident USA watchers on this site natter about the intimate details of that country’s internal affairs, it would be useful if they would provide an analysis of the significance or importance of those affairs for Canada. Otherwise I for one am not interested in such affairs and find it tiresome to have to wade through such boring items while looking for others which are in fact significant, useful or interesting. Today’s debate about the Papacy, for example, is interesting and instructive whatever my assessment of individual opinions expressed.
sweetc 2/11/2013 12:22:53 PM Report

yes, Wisenheimer, it would be a waste to ruin the park. The parks should be kept as is for all who enjoy the outdoors to do so. From my read of things Benedict Arnold was first a loyal officer of the American revolutionaries. He fought the British. It was after he turned, feeding information to the British, that he became a British officer. If he had been caught by the Americans, he would have been hanged, as one of his co-conspirators was. Mr. Poster---David O. was one of the biggest enemies of the Teachers and their Unions---even though he was the Chief Negotiator for the Secondary Teachers and a strong Union Member his days of getting Co-Operation from Teachers are now GONE.

Liz Sandals was a Trustee for the Public School Board before getting a Provincial position.

I am sure the Catholic Teachers and their Boards are surely going to enjoy that.

She has stated, many times, as a Public Board Trustee that there should only be one School Board for all of Ontario.

Boy, she will make a good Minister of Education won't she.

Gerard Kennedy, who was the Queen maker for Ms. Wynne at the end of the Leadership Convention, was once the Ontario Minister of Education and should have been made Minister of Education if Ms. Wynne is looking for experience.

Perhaps it was that Mr. Kennedy is a man and Liz Sandalls is a Woman---nah that can't be the case.
learningaswego 2/11/2013 1:35:17 PM Report

I hear ya on that one oldie; or it could also be that Kennedy is:
- a perennial loser
- is a leftist/socialist, who would therefore be (another) lap dog of the teachers' unions.
- is not elected - doesn't have a seat, and is unlikely to get one
- has been "kingmaker" for other losers - a.k.a. Stephane Dion.

IMHO, giving Kennedy a cabinet post would have the public image of "throwing in the towel". LOL

In response to old cat I agree they need to do something better for the Bon soo concert. Now that you have got me started on this topic I am very disappointed how bonsoo was ran this year first I have seen comments about the hot air balloon rides for the kids were free.. Great it's just to bad that they did them on a Monday from 1:30-3:30 hmmmm nothing like holding it when our kids are in school. I will try to write a letter and have it posted on the main page of sootoday I believe that Bon soo needs to know how poorly it was ran this year with the lack of advertisement most people I talked to didn't even know what events were going on or when and where they were. I have a lot more to talk about I could go on for hours. Mostly about how the president only showed up at the events that held a party afterwards.....in my eyes not a very good president or manager was in control of this hope they clear out all who is involved oon the board and in the office and retrieve some of the older people that made this carnival what it used to be. And by that I mean for the kids and families.
old-cat33 2/11/2013 7:35:03 PM Report

woole44: I just got done reading the skinny Sault Star and there was a concert across the river at Dream Catchers so that could have cut down on the attendance?
But I agree with you there seemed like there was more activities during the carnival time. I like it when they bring in those show bands.
Still one has to remember that this event is run on volunteers.
woole44 2/11/2013 8:11:30 PM Report

Yes but if you look at past concerts that Bon soo has had over the years there has been concerts at the same time either across the river or here in town within a few days essar is famous for booking the Bon soo event then killing the ticket sales by bringing in a bigger show. Like this year they are bringing in the hip the show is tommorw and well of course people are going to buy those tickets before they buy the Bon soo ones which is good because maybe it will teach the people who are running the carnival that they need a big show to increase there sales and make the money they are always crying they want to make. This year was the 50 birthday of mr. Bon soo where was they big concert to calibrate it. They should have brought in another cirque show all I have heard is how much everyone in the sault that attend the cirque show when essar held it here was how much they loved it and would def. go again if they every got another one. The president of Bon soo or the manager of Bon soo should have known that seeing as how last years concert the only good thing about it was the little cirque act they had prior to the concert. That's just my opinion. Oh yes and from what I hear is that Bon soo has no problem getting lots of volunteers lol... I beg to differ

Bon Soo! I don't attend anymore since it's focus has changed to one of little local business trying to get patrons indoors and to separate their funds using Bon Soo as the Schtick.
When I first arrived in my adoptive city in the late seventies your famous winter carnival still celebrated people outdoors doing outdoor activities.
What happened to the chain saw competition, axe throwing, dog races, dog pulling, outdoor hockey, outdoor ice races with cars and trucks. Big bonfire of all the christmas trees returned, International whale boat race across the ice and water of the St. Mary's river. Change the venue back to down town marina area. Block off some streets and fit the midway in. Sleigh rides. Hay rides. Have a free moccasin dance at the essar centre. Closing ceremony fireworks again. ice fishing derby at the sailing club basin. On and On and most outdoors, and free but OUTDOORS. Get it?
Wicket 2/11/2013 9:10:53 PM Report

Agree with Skipper Dave 100% about Bon Soo. Bring back the outdoor FAMILY actiities that he mentioned, forget about all the bar/drinking/partying stuff and return it to what the original purpose was - to get families out of the house in the middle of winter to enjoy themselves, see old friends and neighbours, have fun!!!!! Our grandchildren are not even interested in attending and it sure isn't fun for us without them. Actually, there really isn't anything to do.
woole44 2/11/2013 9:15:25 PM Report

Couldn't have said it better my self skipper. You are right the focus has been taken away from the family activities I remember being younger and riding around on the hay rides at the John Rhodes site all day I would ride them then go in and get a hot chocolate then I would either go look at all the snow sculptures done by the snomadness teams then ride the hay rides again or go skating at the oval I would attend the family dance which was always sold out and I would also return the next morning with my mother and father to attend the pancake breakfast that would take up the whole ice pad of the Rhodes rink after that I would go watch some of the snomadness events wonder around the snow sculptures again and ride the hay rides again before leaving to go attend other events outdoors around the city all weekend and all week my family and I would be busy doing Bon soo activities. Man where did those days go? Oh that's right the new president doesn't like being outside that is why the only out door event he attended was the polar bear swim hmmmm had to try to keep up with the past president on that one wouldn't want people to ask why he wasn't following suit. In my opinion they need new staff to try to save what is left of what they used to call the greatest snow on earth.. Where did that saying go ? Oh ya new president new slogan Bon soo it's for you. Should be Bon soo the carnival I drove into the ground in one year.
