Sam C, so is most of the mall building itself located on land fill. If you look at the credit union building which hasn't moved....the water line was only a couple of hundred feet away from it. Anyone looked at the disgruntled employee angle or customer. Now here me out. The brewskie company serves notice on the plumbers union (they are the ones who make the wort and insure an ample supply of strained filtered water for their product. Anyway they have this plumber who has only drank Dorans Draft in a keg. You might say he needs his draft every day.) anyways they are going out of business. This focused young plumber rather then take a buy out, he gets paid off in kegs. They ran out last week and he goes berserk. His friends notice he is in a constant hissy fit of rage willing to take on all comers. Yesterday he goes to lunch at Tim's on Bay and sits alone. I wonder what "the system" will do for this 17 year old. She is so young, things aren't hopeless for her if she gets the right support. A person at that age doesn't get to a point of destruction without a reason, whether the destruction is to themselves, someone else or something else. Any time I read news of a young person doing something that is breaking the law in a major way, being destructive through drug abuse or whatever, my mind automatically wonders about the parents and their role in that young person's anger. Our system fails at rehabilitating people in my opinion.

The kid will protest - on tv and after alerting the CBC to her "victimization", and this outrageous and unfair "sentence". The CBC will be right on board to help; and the Idle No More movement will hail her as a heroine of "the 99%".
A leftist-socialist political party will offer her a job as a "researcher" or "community activist", and in a few years she'll get a $120,000 a year job with a human rights tribunal; then of course later run in an election for the leftist-socialist party.

PinkPeony - sadly the system can do nothing for the 17 year old because they think her problem is drugs! if we could just get her off drugs then she would be OK. Not so, her problems in life come when she's cold sober and full of anger and fear. We don't acknowledge that and we certainly don't have the means to fix it, we do have people who know how but it ain't addictions councillors. They are in charge of the itch not the cause of the itch. Someday when we have time I'll share some of my thoughts, not now. We have too many just put the plug in the jug folks listening and they're worse then a whole gaggle of rw's. But on the positive side you can addiction proof any child if you start young enough.

skipper, I understand the system and how it doesn't work although there are some in the system that truly care and do the best they can (within their guidelines at work). I believe this girl just needs to know that she is worthy, a worthwhile human that can understand and overcome anything that got her to the place she is in now and that she could be an asset to many people. I think we could have a good conversation and I completely understand why you don't want to get into it on here. I believe that 17 is a good age for her to meet a good mentor and overcome her issues. A good mentor could help save her from a lot of years of struggling, rebelling, raging, drinking, drugging, etc.

Exactly what do you think we, as society, should do with these young people who go astray?? The system gives them many chances to "straighten out", however as you see from the police beat, many do not take those chances, and thus the charge "breach of undertaking/probation etc etc etc. Are we all supposed to be "our brothers/sisters keepers" "turn the other cheek". Society has removed the word "discipline" from the childs world and we are reaping the benefit of those actions, if there is a need for medical treatment give it, however if there is a need for punishment then it should be NOW not 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 months later. I know many will disagree with me, but I do not seem to remember all the crime/vandalism in my youth, I am sure there was some, but it was dealt with very quickly, and generally painfully, so the knowledge that doing something wrong had serious repercusions..

If you did you would see that I said if Medical treatment is required give it, however if there is no mental problem then that is a different matter altogether, and the punishment should be carried out NOW while the memory is there.... Half the time the persons have forgotten what the heck they are being punished for because the Justice System is so slow... Judges, prosecutors and Defence Lawyer all have to line up as well as the witnesses and the defendent... Why is it that the offender always has to be seen as a social misfit because of hardships in life and thus a victim... what would your response have been if there had been some other person there who did not escape the flames, would the 17 year old then be given as much sympathy...

When I was a teen and the age was 18 to consume alcohol, all the draught in Northern Ontario had to be Doran's Draught. No other draught was available anywhere.
The first glass was awful, second one, nearly passable, from then on, anything was good as your taste buds were numb. Waiters came to the table with a tray full of draught in glasses clearly marked around the top with a circle indicating 12 ounces. The waiter waould only say "how many?"
When competition came to town, the horrible Dorans Draught was soon to become history.
I had family members who worked at the Lock City Beverage part of that plant which made pop. It was always great pop and yes the labels were painted on clear glass. You had to have an opener to get them open, so when you went to camp, openers were a must have.
