Well look who gets to say Good Morning Kids

Giddyup it's gettin late
Grump 2/8/2013 7:34:55 AM Report

Good morning nanag and all. I was up before six but had some thing that needed getting done. rw you should read your posts from yesterday , you are a bright fellow and I understand a fairly nice one. That said maybe you could consider being less of an ass. Try it and you will like it, so will others.
Mr. Poster 2/8/2013 8:22:09 AM Report

Folks have talked for years about abolishing the senate. What purpose does it serve except to reward party faithful? Lets get rid of this cash sucker once and for all. When senate members are called on the carpet for being is time to end all these perks that Canada can really not afford.

It is sad to see the Northern Brewries burning yesterday on here.
I have never tasted Cream Soda pop the way they made it.I can remember the painted on labels but I think it said Dorans Beverage? OH well can't really recall that far back,God I forget where I put my truck keys at home??

I tried to find a Dorans soft drink bottle in Google images but all I could find were a few beer bottles, including Edelbrau. Remember that weird tasting stuff?

Less of an ass?
Less of an ass than who, you?
As I said yesterday, I rarely draw first blood and did not again today.
I do enjoy the retort, very much.

...I heard they had to cart Snobank off to the "institution" as yesterday he posted that he thinks he might be related to me.

Poor fellow.

Hey don't forget Doran's draft. Remember in my yute the major breweries being on strike but Sudbury, Timmins and the Sault being awash with Silver Foam and Draft. On a similar topic - The brick smokestack was there long before Dorans. And the spelling on the logo says SOO ..........? Any history buffs?
right wing 2/8/2013 9:58:30 AM Report

skipper dave

I remember that.
The line ups were out the door and down the street on Bay.
The bottles of beer were still warm in the cases and you had to let them cool down.

rw I could well be too. That said I try not to advertise it many times daily.

I have a friend in southern Ontario who used to call me up and say "I am all bound up. Can you Fed Ex me some of that low level calonic Dorans Beer?"
Of course I'd send him a half dozen Northern and a few days later I'd get a relieved call back.
Dorans Beer - aged a full fifteen minutes.
But it was mother's milk to our generation.

Google Soo Falls Brewing Company
Shakey 2/8/2013 10:29:44 AM Report

As I haven't lived in the Soo for years can anyone tell me if Northern Breweries was still brewing beverages up until the fire? Still reading this column regularly, always entertaining.
Sam C 2/8/2013 10:33:56 AM Report

Wikipedia has a brief history of the Brewery...

I do recall, also, that the original Soo Falls Brewery was established on the site of a former foundry. The SSM Museum website has info on this, BUT... they have experienced technical problems, and the site is temporarily unavailable, so I can't check.
Sam C 2/8/2013 10:35:06 AM Report

Shakey... no, production ceased around 2006 or so, when the company went bankrupt.
Just Curious 2/8/2013 10:45:54 AM Report

Remember the old days....When you actually had to GO to the meseum to find out something??? LOL Wonderfull place, that. Have spent many afternoons just wandering in there...
NB113 2/8/2013 10:51:58 AM Report

The brewery in the Sault opened as Soo Falls Brewing in 1899. It was not built on a foundry. Soo Foundry was down the street from the brewery.

NB113: I thought Soo Foundry had a stack also? Everybody had a stack back then....LOL.
Sam C 2/8/2013 11:30:26 AM Report

Thanks for the clarification, NB.

I do recall when the waterfront was entirely industrial -- coal and shipping docks, warehouses, etc. The south parking lot of the Station mall is entirely landfill.

Wicket 2/8/2013 11:39:21 AM Report

Sam C, so is most of the mall building itself located on land fill. If you look at the credit union building which hasn't moved....the water line was only a couple of hundred feet away from it. Have looked at pictures that show a board walkway across the water so that people from boats could get across beside the credit union over to the old hotel that burned down.
old-cat33 2/8/2013 11:42:16 AM Report

There is a lot of water being dumped on that fire.I wonder if the water is metered on those fire trucks? Someone has to pay for the water because it's going up 10%??
I'll have to ask one of my fireman buddies next hockey game.

Grump: Good point about rw. I couldn't agree more. Hard to be believe that anybody on here could be so persistently 'combative' and negative. Even his response to you today speaks about drawing "first blood"! Not something civilized people usually do when simply having a civil discussion. Maybe some people just wake up every day and see the glass half empty. How depressing. His persona indicates that he couldn't give a s#@t what anybody thinks of him or his opinions and that's OK but at least he knows. Sad to be SO FAR RIGHT all the time that you're actually WRONG on so many levels so much of the time.
Brianne 2/8/2013 12:24:15 PM Report

skipper dave 2/8/2013 1:01:54 PM Report

Please oh please 17 year old misdirected water front renewal personage? If your out today please don't get it in your head to torch Spelly's beloved Norgoma. She may be steel but she has 24 coats of oil based marine paint and there is more thousands of board feet of 100% dried wood in the interior staterooms than Soo Mill has seen in a long time. What I'm saying is she would go up faster than a butane lighter right down to the water line and all us heartbroken souls would be left with is the insurance money. Although we might be able to get the grass to grow along the west side of the marina. The wayward yute would probably get 30 days concurrent to what she will receive for torching our historic rat infested brewery site. I'm just speculating here folks about putting a positive spin on anything as long as no one gets hurt cept Spelly's broken heart and that can be mended with time and a few nascar races at the Tilton Hilton.

OK, anybody but me getting the irresistible urge to jump in my fathers Buick Road Master and go on a gawking tour of the conflagration site? Or am I way behind in the getting out of bed to help our city's finest try to figure this one out. 17 year old too easy, this one's got conspiracy written all over it, how do I know? The demolition permit says the starting date is the end of this month. There has been no going out for demolition quotes yet. A little smelly from where I sit. Let's pole our neo-confanatacs to see where they were during yesterday lunch hour and saying you were at the Tim Hortons on Bay don't cut it.
theprotector 2/8/2013 1:15:38 PM Report

yeah it does stink a tad doesnt?
Wicket 2/8/2013 1:29:57 PM Report

I thought I read in the newspaper a couple of weeks back that the demolition contract had been awarded??? and if this was 'fixed', then why pick the small building on the corner, if the bigger one had been torched, then everything would have been burning.
flyhawk25 2/8/2013 1:31:45 PM Report

The word I'm hearing is that it was pay back from the Coors brewing family for Northern Brewery trying to cut into their market years ago.
Seems there is no limit to what those ultra-right wing NRA nuts will do for revenge.
The poor girl was just a pawn in the plot because her mother owed money to a certain local John Bitch member for installing a water purifier and she did not pay.
I'm sure it's probably just another urban myth.
Just Curious 2/8/2013 1:34:56 PM Report

Wicket, the big one is concrete block and pretty much a shell. The smaller one was mostly offices and stuff,I think.I wonder why they even bothered to try to put it out, should have just let it burn..IMHO...
skipper dave 2/8/2013 1:53:47 PM Report

Anyone looked at the disgruntled employee angle or customer. Now here me out. The brewskie company serves notice on the plumbers union (they are the ones who make the wort and insure an ample supply of strained filtered water for their product. Anyway they have this plumber who has only drank Dorans Draft in a keg. You might say he needs his draft every day.) anyways they are going out of business. This focused young plumber rather then take a buy out, he gets paid off in kegs. They ran out last week and he goes berserk. His friends notice he is in a constant hissy fit of rage willing to take on all comers. Yesterday he goes to lunch at Tim's on Bay and sits alone. When he leaves the sound of sirens can be heard charging down Bay. Tragic folks.
flyhawk25 2/8/2013 2:02:48 PM Report

As conspiracy theories go that might trump mine.
Someone was seen running in right hand loops around the site during the worst of it.
Well done. I like yours better.

I wonder what "the system" will do for this 17 year old. She is so young, things aren't hopeless for her if she gets the right support. A person at that age doesn't get to a point of destruction without a reason, whether the destruction is to themselves, someone else or something else. Any time I read news of a young person doing something that is breaking the law in a major way, being destructive through drug abuse or whatever, my mind automatically wonders about the parents and their role in that young person's anger. Our system fails at rehabilitating people in my opinion.
Snobank 2/8/2013 2:21:30 PM Report

Just returning from my RW recovery program session. May not have fully taken, my car keeps pulling right. Need a Dorans.
learningaswego 2/8/2013 2:34:13 PM Report

The kid will probably get 40 hours community service time. As just the sound of that remotely resembles something like "work"; it will prove to be a huge deterrent of similar bad behaviour in the future.

The kid will protest - on tv and after alerting the CBC to her "victimization", and this outrageous and unfair "sentence". The CBC will be right on board to help; and the Idle No More movement will hail her as a heroine of "the 99%".

A leftist-socialist political party will offer her a job as a "researcher" or "community activist", and in a few years she'll get a $120,000 a year job with a human rights tribunal; then of course later run in an election for the leftist-socialist party.
BIG BROTHER 2/8/2013 2:44:24 PM Report

Perhaps Harper could appoint her to the Senate!! There is about to be a vacancy in the Con. caucus!!
learningaswego 2/8/2013 2:47:13 PM Report

The young waif, now a leftist-socialist politician, will run - while living in the Soo - in a riding in Quebec she has never heard of, and couldn't find on a map. She will not campaign in the riding or appear there, and will just put up a few signs among hundreds of others with Jack Layton's picture on them.
She will get elected as a Quebec MP (of course), and even though she didn't finish Gr. 9, or ever have a real job, lefty-socialists far and wide will applaud.
The resident lefties of Sootoday will prostrate themselves in awe of this bright young star, and convince us of how unfairly she'd been treated all of her life.

Learning I see your neo-con cousin Senator Brazeau has been charged with sexual assault and assault. Certainly another shrewd move by your commander Herr Harper. It's comforting to know that he will recieve his salary for many years to come as we can't expect him to earn it can we.
skipper dave 2/8/2013 3:29:11 PM Report

PinkPeony - sadly the system can do nothing for the 17 year old because they think her problem is drugs! if we could just get her off drugs then she would be OK. Not so, her problems in life come when she's cold sober and full of anger and fear. We don't acknowledge that and we certainly don't have the means to fix it, we do have people who know how but it ain't addictions councillors. They are in charge of the itch not the cause of the itch. Someday when we have time I'll share some of my thoughts, not now. We have too many just put the plug in the jug folks listening and they're worse then a whole gaggle of rw's. But on the positive side you can addiction proof any child if you start young enough.
Pink Peony 2/8/2013 4:04:00 PM Report

skipper, I understand the system and how it doesn't work although there are some in the system that truly care and do the best they can (within their guidelines at work). I believe this girl just needs to know that she is worthy, a worthwhile human that can understand and overcome anything that got her to the place she is in now and that she could be an asset to many people. I think we could have a good conversation and I completely understand why you don't want to get into it on here. I believe that 17 is a good age for her to meet a good mentor and overcome her issues. A good mentor could help save her from a lot of years of struggling, rebelling, raging, drinking, drugging, etc.
mallet 2/8/2013 4:17:12 PM Report

Skipper Dave...

Exactly what do you think we, as society, should do with these young people who go astray?? The system gives them many chances to "straighten out", however as you see from the police beat, many do not take those chances, and thus the charge "breach of undertaking/probation etc etc etc. Are we all supposed to be "our brothers/sisters keepers" "turn the other cheek". Society has removed the word "discipline" from the childs world and we are reaping the benefit of those actions, if there is a need for medical treatment give it, however if there is a need for punishment then it should be NOW not 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 months later. I know many will disagree with me, but I do not seem to remember all the crime/vandalism in my youth, I am sure there was some, but it was dealt with very quickly, and generally painfully, so the knowledge that doing something wrong had serious repercusions..

P P..

Read my whole response.... If you did you would see that I said if Medical treatment is required give it, however if there is no mental problem then that is a different matter altogether, and the punishment should be carried out NOW while the memory is there.... Half the time the persons have forgotten what the heck they are being punished for because the Justice System is so slow... Judges, prosecutors and Defence Lawyer all have to line up as well as the witnesses and the defendent... Why is it that the offender always has to be seen as a social misfit because of hardships in life and thus a victim... what would your response have been if there had been some other person there who did not escape the flames, would the 17 year old then be given as much sympathy...

We can all be fairly sure another was involved. The system that we have is horrid! The whole system wants to keep drug addicts, alcoholics ect the way they are.It is alot less expensive and they don,t have to do a thing. If they were put directly into rehab for thier conditions, they would be a mush lesser rate getting back in trouble.Places like the Donald Ducette Youth Centre have been doing extremely good work . I personaly can name 5 teens now working,at school doing great due to there good food, lots of sports and terrific councilors. They are very strict there .This should be a eye opener for the A.T.R.C. who just locks them ,feeds them then lets them right back!Good luck and I hope this girl gets the help she needs. They need###parent,.single or not!!

When I was a teen and the age was 18 to consume alcohol, all the draught in Northern Ontario had to be Doran's Draught. No other draught was available anywhere.

The first glass was awful, second one, nearly passable, from then on, anything was good as your taste buds were numb. Waiters came to the table with a tray full of draught in glasses clearly marked around the top with a circle indicating 12 ounces. The waiter waould only say "how many?"

When competition came to town, the horrible Dorans Draught was soon to become history.
I had family members who worked at the Lock City Beverage part of that plant which made pop. It was always great pop and yes the labels were painted on clear glass. You had to have an opener to get them open, so when you went to camp, openers were a must have.

Zing,I had just the opposite reaction about draft beer in the north. When I travelled up here on repair work for a company in London years ago,the draft beer was one of the reasons I looked forward to the work. After I moved here I drank virtually nothing but Northern Ale for years until Northern shut down. To this day I have never found a draft beer I could like as much as I did Northern draft. I guess it is a matter of personal taste but I like both a beer or a Rye that fights back when I drink it...:)
