Good morning sweet Soo!
The generous giving kind human spirit resides in the West end and I witness it everyday! The perpetrator (I respect his anonymity) optimizes the word spiritual. I know because I see him every day sitting astride his open tractor with blower. He'd be the first to be uncomfortable being centred out in a public expression of gratitude, he has an image to uphold. He's a rough tough John Wayne type whose career of many years was spent in uniform serving and protecting us and apparently has a soft spot for kids and that's what he is best remembered for. Every day this big bear of a man roars down third line West to blow Skipper Dave's drive while I prepare for a day at the barn (SAH). How do you possibly thank this man? I've dreamed of winning the Lotto Max and buying him a real John Deer tractor painted green with heated cab and a big mother of a blower, but that,s a dream and don't tell me to pass it on that,s a sanctimonious lecture that he and I do not need. Instead my wife bakes him a loaf of banana bread with chocolate chips and a small card and I, well I stand at the window in my PJ's and robe and will not leave till I get his attention and give him a wave with a big lump in my throat that has nothing to do with my treatment program, no wait maybe it has everything to do with the treatment. Kindness is alive and well on third line west and has not gone out of fashion.

Skipper Dave: I was always taught that if you do good for someone else you will get repaid, perhaps not by the person for whom you did the good deed, but repaid nevertheless. So when this person is doing a good deed for you it is probably because over the course of life you have done many good deeds for others. I doubt that we know each other, but having read most of what you've posted I suspect that you are no stranger to doing good deeds for others.

I watched Hillary Clinton's testimony on the embassy raid yesterday.
For all those sensitive dolts who accused her of faking her recent illness to keep from testifying you might want to watch the face of a tough direct woman.
Then you might want to admit that you were wrong. Again.
lambkins 1/24/2013 9:12:55 AM Report

Skipper Dave thanks for your little snippets of "Chicken Soup for the Soul". Reminds us all that there is good in the world still.
Nice to read instead of all the bashing and political dribble.
skipper dave 1/24/2013 9:26:42 AM Report

On Hillary - I'm taking bets and am willing to place odds of two to one. In four years she will be the first female president and perhaps the best they have had so far. I envy the the American people and some of the genuine leaders they produce. Us, we have Harper who is so lacklustre and to me was handed the best playing cards among all of the G20 leaders and frittered them away. Imaginary conversation at the table. Harper "So what's everbody else doing" "We can do that". "I'll follow Garge's lead". "I'll pass, hold or fold".
Just Curious 1/24/2013 9:49:10 AM Report

Skipper...I'd take that bet.
She doesn't need the grief. She's had too many years of reality to need or want it.
Plus she is getting old.Plus she'd be stuck back in the White House with you-know-who with time on his hands...or whomever.
Let her spoil her grand-kids and write.

sorry people, just have to vent about Bell Canada and their Let's Talk day. Make me laugh! The WORST company with regards to customer service certainly does not practice what they preach. Long story short, I have been a loyal customer for over 25 years and due to a very bad time in my life this year, I have an outstanding balance which I cannot clear up without taking money from my food budget for my kids and horses. Try to explain to them, NO WAY, they would not TALK! They hire a 3rd party collections agency to bully and intimidate and harass me causing much stress, anxiety, depression which manifests itself in lost time from work, physical ailments etc.... Don't make me laugh, the bottome line is what they care about, not humanity or compassion when people are dealing with a rough time in their life. MULTIBILLION dollar corporation wants their money, they don't care who goes cold or hungry or what your situation is.

I was never to Sudbury Downs but it's nice to see the government keep it open. There was a lot of people going to loose their jobs over that if they closed.

I was at some horse races once across the river at Kinross Fair Grounds (I think?)and I found them boring. Besides I don't know how to bet on them? Stock racing is more exciting.
Just Curious 1/24/2013 10:25:52 AM Report

66ss; They are horses, not kids. Be realistic, you must either own or rent space for them, hay and oats aren't cheap,Vet care is astronomical. You,by your own admission, are way over your head so make adjustments and quit whining. Your kids will look after you when you get old, your horses won't. Sell the horses, pay your bill and get a puppy...:)
68ssgirl 1/24/2013 10:52:37 AM Report

All in order to apease a multibillion dollar company until I get over a rough patch in my life? I don't think so.... they can afford to wait. You obviously have never raised an animal from when it was a baby... you don't just sell them, you are committed to them and you do all you can to take care of them. Just as you would for your children. Believe me, I don't whine, I deal with everyday as it comes... but everyone deals with things that are not planned or deserved.... criticism belongs with the company who does not practice what they preach as far as "Let's Talk"....
Just Curious 1/24/2013 10:53:04 AM Report

Sorry,68ss....And I am an animal lover, had pets all my life and when I was farming had a horse (pony) for the kids but when times got tough the big pets went. They are just too expensive to maintain..
68ssgirl 1/24/2013 10:56:14 AM Report

If it was an honest to goodness, caring company, but Bell Canada has the WORST customer service, they continually make mistakes on accounts and take FOREVER to correct them, transfer you to at least 4 or 5 different people everytime you call, and each call takes at least 1/2 hour.... can't stomach a company like this who tries to portray a wonderfully caring exterior while treating their customers like crap.
Left Winger 1/24/2013 11:12:02 AM Report

I have to agree with 68ssgirl...

Bell is one of the worst offenders for harassing their customers with threatening phone calls etc...

I found out that we are actually paying a month ahead of time so in reality they are threatening to cut off service for something you haven't yet received.

And don't get me started on the run around when calling. I was sent a disconnect letter stating that it was because I had not paid my bill on time. When I reviewed the paid bills they had been the first I paid. I informed them of this and they had me call another number to straigthen the mess out. I was told that if I payed my bill on time this would not happen...WTF is that? I stated that my bill was paid on time, it was their screwup but it's hard to work with someone who is in India to resolve the issue.

long story short, time to give Shaw a try again.

In politics as in life timing is everything.
Hillary had her shot and got run over by the Obama bus.I truly believe this health scare and now knowing just how screwed up the world is first hand she'll try growing roses or painting. Not unlike Churchill.
She will be remembered well by history as probably the best president who never got elected. Rather like Robert Stanfield here.Or Ed Broadbent.

Fly I agree with you whole heartily except for one thing. Our gal has been an overachiever all her life and I think as much of a fan as I am of Obama his bus will not have the horsepower to overcome the idiocy of the right. Churchill got the boot and he had his fondness for booze to help Hillary just has her Mr. Right but not the brass ring. She will appreciate the rest but putting it in neutral when you've trained your entire life, don't think so. PS. of course the bet is off.
Brianne 1/24/2013 11:39:19 AM Report

68ssgirl....... if your bill has gone to collections, it was sold to the collection company ( they have paid your bell bill for you). this is why Bell won't deal with you anymore. Send them a money order for $1 a week.......... you will be making payment, and they have to accept it.
flyhawk25 1/24/2013 12:01:34 PM Report may be correct about 'the idiocy of the right'. Just read what passes for intelligent narrative on here.
But the reality in the US is that there are just a few rigid Tea Party newbies who are holding the country hostage.
I suspect Boehner and the other experienced pragmatists will find a way to circumvent them.
If they don't the country is in a very big mess and the blame will not rest on Obama.Up here the next election will serve as a diuretic to purge the country of another rigid conservative reactionary.
Or we'll join Uncle Sam in the toilet bowl.

thats right they have to accept it however they can also demand payment if the terms of the contract were violated. The court will look at the attempt to repay if sued and determin whether or not an honest attempt has been made. Yeah bell sucks....but they are in business to make money, you got service for them and didnt pay it. It is not relevant how big the company may be it is getting something for free when it ought to have been paid far as comparing pets to kids LOL I am an animal lover however anyone who has kids will tell you, that comparision show nothng but an immature lack of knowledge statment for which you should be ashamed of making. Pay your bills dead beat!
RLE 1/24/2013 1:01:09 PM Report

68ssgirl: Back when, when I was in a similar situation to yours and Bell was the only game in town, I got behind on my phone bill and was told be Bell that if I didn't pay by the 28th my phone would be cut off. I called and advised that I got paid on the 29th and would pay it then. There response was pay by the 28th or you lose service and will have to pay$200.00 to get reconnected. Fortunately my income tax refund arrived prior to the 28th and I avoided the issue. Shortly after that my wife found another job and we could pay the bill on time. When Shaw arrived I switched to them. as quickly as it was humanly possible to do so. That was several years ago and to this day I still get calls and mail from Bell wanting me to come back to them. There is about as much chance of that as SSM growing palm trees in January
68ssgirl 1/24/2013 1:12:51 PM Report

My point is not to argue the position I'm in or how I got there. Suffice it to say that is my business and I didn't get there by being a "dead beat" or wanting something for nothing. My point is that this huge company is sponsoring such an event when they do not practice the compassion that they pretend to be showing.
bounder 1/24/2013 1:23:23 PM Report

To all of you getting rid of Bell was the smartest thing to do.The only thing I have left now is one cell phone attached to Bell, corporate plan. But if you don't pay the bills they are all the same.I really got a laugh when they were told that I was quitting them, they would offer deals and say (you have been such a long time customer).Well why not give me a deal before I quit, why does it take that I'm quiting to get a deal.Suck it ma bell.I hope everone quits them,I worked as a cable splicer in my early youth and got fired by trying to bring in the IBEW.Pay back is a bitch.
Resident 1/24/2013 1:24:44 PM Report

theprotector: There are people (and MANY) who have almost as close attachment to their pets as to their children. Why shouldn't someone want other alternatives available? I have known of demands of people to sell their belongings and/or getting money from friends/relatives. That is also difficult for some to do. What is wrong with paying what you can until you get caught up? From what I understand it wasn't just not bothering to pay!
Resident 1/24/2013 1:27:05 PM Report

And yes, show the compassion that Bell professes to have!
Just Curious 1/24/2013 1:57:58 PM Report

I had Bell for the best part of 50 years before switching to Shaw and when I was younger got disconnected a few times before I figured out this bill paying thing. Even Shaw will get a bit testy if you don't pay them on time.
Bell tends to forget they don't have a monopoly anymore and can't just do what they want. That being said, when you sign on the dotted line for a service you are expected to pay as promised. I learned over time that with just about every body as long as you stay in contact and don't ignore them it's better. Call them once in a while before they call you, throws them right off.
68ss,just put the phone in someone elses name, lots of people do that and after a couple of years you can get it back...But still, get rid of the horses, they don't really classify as pets.I don't think even a judge would cut you much slack on that one...

Most of you have left Bell for greener pastures for whatever your reasons. I, personally, have never had problems with Bell and have not and probably will not switch to anyone else.
That being said, last year I missed, inadvertently, paying my PUC bill on time. Two weeks after the due date, we received a pink or yellow coloured past due notice that our service would be cut off within ten days if it was not paid before that time. From what some of my friends tell me who have their own businesses it is often difficult to get paid by people they know and should be prompt.
So I assume if a person would jerk a friend around the big companies face the same cash flow issues but on a bigger scale.
Having worked where I was the victim of "oops, I thought I signed that..."I can sympathize even with Ma Bell who I dropped for all of the previous issues.
I also have experienced paying cash at the time of purchasing goods or services at local businesses and can testify that when I call with an issue I get prompt service.
All businesses have overhead - some just bigger than others.

Europeans (including Germany) are the "idlers of the world" and there are more practising Christians in China recently than in the whole of Europe.
I can recommend a book called Civilization: the West and the Rest by Niall Ferguson. I heard him last year on Q and was fascinated. Very well written and extensively researched. I see... can't think of any one taking it personal... when you're in charge of the road killing machine.

Should I read under the water...were the road killing recipes, really banned?

Well, at least I could see you writing God with capital F...

You're gonna be cured in no time my boy!

Have a good night.

Spence finally quit her faux hunger strike after coming up with a list of 13 "demands" to the Canadian taxpayers. She is currently toddling off to the dung-heap of history where she so rightly belongs.

"What was the issue regarding Chief Spencer? "

The intent generated a national dialogue. Good!
"Idle No More" was spawned in the West from a general discontent with the status quo but its genesis was mainly triggered by the omnibus bill rammed through by our current government..btw..the worst government Canada has had to endure.
Harper has to go!
Spence rode on the coat tails of that movement and by and large has been an embarrassment to the cause, due to a more than opaque financial audit in Attawapiskat.
She was never in danger!
She is doing well.....the same can not be said of the folks she is supposed to shepherd in Attawapiskat.

Opportunism at its best.

Another voice of reason…

Anthony Sowan is a registered Cree living in Red Deer, Alberta. He writes: (Edited)

"Our country should offer no free rides to anyone. No help for those who refuse to help themselves. No quarter for those who would inhibit the lives and the success of others.

It doesn’t matter who built the first camp fires and communities on this land...

The first step toward healing is putting the past in its place. The healing you want and need can come from no government program, and no external source."

Canna D. Something,

Some segments of our population are entitled to a free ride. They have payed for it in the past!
They should get a free ride and then some!
Having said is very hard not to be cynical.
Spences' "escapade" is a bit much to swallow.
Posturing at it's best. Self immolation would have gotten my attention! A "hunger strike" on fish broth....not so much!
The First Nations have been dealt a stinky deal from the get go. Things need to be re-negotiated . We should not and cannot tolerate a situation like Attawapiskat. It's shameful.
Spence brought it to light...yet she is exactly the poster girl as of why things are the way they are.
Opportunism in the face of despair and a total lack of self awareness. You should not drive an Escalade while kids in your jurisdiction sniff gasoline!
In the age of "facebook" and "twitter" she represents what is wrong with our sense of social awareness..or the lack of it.
Her self imposed "hunger strike" is no more salient than an appearance on Canadian Idol.

I had to look up the word salient ... just saying

Status: I agree with most of what you said about Chief Spencer (and harper). I'm glad that at least there are going to be meetings and that harper has been forced into acting like he is open to discussion. I DO NOT think that Chief Spencers eating at Taco Bell or whatever has anything to do with the issue.
Resident 1/24/2013 10:28:13 PM Report

Status, I think your last posting is much more salient regarding the issue(s)!!!

"You should not drive an Escalade while kids in your jurisdiction sniff gasoline!"

And how does that differ from 'white or whatever' leaders?

"Saliency" is in the eye of the beholder.
I am somewhat glad you get my point (s), and don't throw me into the trough with "steelworker" and like minded trailer park residents and Walmart shoppers, (no insult's a fact we all have to deal with) consuming FOX news and popular norms and "googled" wisdoms.
A world view spawned by ignorance and a diet of hard working steel mill shift work reality.

I am afraid that the discourse between First Nations and the Institution called Canada will never be solved.
It is something we will have to deal with!
It will be ongoing and "irresolvible".

It doesn't!...but it doesn't make it right!
steelworker 1/25/2013 4:37:01 AM Report

...always nice to hear from the holier-than -thou ivory tower segment of the population. Oh well; I'm off to work to help pay for people like Spence and company.
