Obama's second inauguration: Is the thrill gone?

The excitement among Americans for President Barack Obama's first inauguration appears to have diminished as he begins his second term, according to a new national survey.

Hmmm...wonder why??

“Taken as a single geographic entity, Europe has the largest economy in the world. Should it choose to do so, it could become a military rival to the United States. Europe is one of the pillars of the global system, and what happens to Europe is going to define how the world works. I would argue that in 2013 we will begin to get clarity on the future of Europe.”

George Friedman, Stratfor

The future of Europe will be a resurrection of the Holy (misnomer) Roman Empire with Germany running the show.

Good morning sweet Soo! Says wind chill of -29, not bad! I'll ring up the loved ones slumbering in their London On. hotel, they wish to take their time coming home today. I will be forced to vacuum the guinea pig cage before their arrival and bag the garbage to hide the evidence of my less than balanced diet for the last few days. Even went so far as to purchase paper plates. What else to come up looking like a rose? Oh ya clear the history file, empty the cache and dump cookies. She's already on to me and suspects I've been looking at pictures of naked boats all weekend. Course having an empty cache is evidence itself. Now this week promises to be a bitter cold one just like we remembered as kids period. Sorry but as I get older I have no tolerance for the cold. Often thought that if you wanted a successful old volks home run the tropical theme with palm trees lots of water and plenty of tranquilizers. tune into you later.

So it is with second term presidents. His public approval rating is still around 51% compared to less than 20% for the GOP congress.

Bad Dawg.. waiting yesterday a.m. to turn left from South Market onto Trunk. Sitting correctly in the turning lane. Van next to me (in the go through lane) beeps at me as i begin to move into the intersection.

He waves toward the back of the van.. i'm guessing in an attempt to ask me to check his signal light. He was attempting a left turn from the wrong lane.

Now, as I tell my students, no one should die because of mistakes and we all need to help each other in traffic issues. WHo knows? Maybe a newbie to the intersection and didn't quite know where the lanes were under the snow..

BUT

I couldn't see his signal lights as the entire back of his van was caked in salt and snow. Couldn't see his brake lights either..

This moves it from helping someone who has made a mistake to well.. culling the herd..

Before you move it, people. clean it OFF!

Obama has a very ambitious agenda.
His top three are reported to be the debt, gun control and immigration.
I hope Obama gives his all to the debt problem as gun control and immigration pale in comparison.
The most Obama will gain with gun control is perhaps some stricter gun purchasing application laws.
With immigration he has as much chance reforming it as Clinton did in his last term with long term peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

It has been my experience that if you give the narrow-minded jingoists enough time they will self destruct.
Admittedly it never seems as fast or thorough enough at times but eventually they choke on their own venom.
As so it is again today.
One sad angry poster whose written history on here is repeatedly negative and poorly thought out again self-destructs when challenged by fact.
Sadly there have also been postings on other topics which are thoughtful and balanced.
That dichotomy is part of man's nature.Each of us is a complex amalgam of our experiences and education.
I remain hopeful that each of us can learn and change.
That optimism keeps me trying to seek new ideas for myself and hoping that others will try as well.
I refuse to despair but it is a challenge.

I'll let up on you a tad did not realize you were choking on venom.
...and yes remain hopeful that you can learn and change and work hard on that "refuse to despair".
It is a challenge but, dare I say it,...I'm betting on you....

How about a world discussion! Does anyone have a point of view regarding the Algerian army operation to free hostages from the hostage takers, note I have not called them any nationality or religous group. Some are saying that Africa is becoming a hotbed for Islamic Jihadists,being supported by Libya and Egypt. One has to wonder, if this is true, what our various leaders think of the situation now, after having deposed the previous rulers/dictators. Are they really sure they want to depose Basir Alasad in Syria, and risk the same situation in the Middle East? It is said that hindsight is 20/20 vision, I just wish all the various world leaders could see past the end of their nose, it might just make the world a more peaceful and secure place..

I see so many comments about peoples spelling, not using a (,) etc.
When some one says "Hi there itsky, how are you today" , I dont give a darn what is a noun/verb/adjative/subjective completion/ or the spelling in the comment. Nothing wrong with being corrected from time to time,yes, we should not revert back to learning the language. But(love that word)most people dont need their nose rubbed in a lesser education in the proper spelling, or use of words in a sentance.
How many languages do the people who do spell checking on this site, speak.
A lot of older people came to canada, not speaking english, so all you spell checkers out there, ease off with the " hey you spelled that wrong, I know I have a ba in the english language"....ok, does that make you better than others on this site, or in the world..

I marvel at how Americans preach egalitarianism and fawn over winners.
And there was no hiding House Speaker Boehner's pickle puss. I haven't seen such a sour visage since the first Obama coronation with Dick Cheney doing a Dr. Strangelove imitation.
The Republicans still don't get it.
You cannot govern when you control only 1/3 of the legislative system. Consequently until they realize and accept the fact the the people wanted a Democratic president and senate they will be viewed as obstructionists.
Time for John Boehner to get pragmatic and look to make nice with the two time winner.
Take small victories, regroup and take your chances the next time or face a party doomed to the ash pile of irrelevance.

Also the Conservative Government has Canada`s the best economy of the G20 and growing.
Whereas other G20 countries are or just about economic basket cases. I.E.Portugal,Italy,Ireland,Greece...

Conservatives were good to weather the recession now they are tackling the 36 trillion debt.

If you recall it was the BQ,Liberals and the NDP who demanded that the Conservatives spend to get out of the
recession with their Action Plan.

Let us not forget that it was the Conservatives who gave the official apology to our fellow Canadians for the Residential School abuse.For that they made PM Harper and honorary Chief of the Blood Tribe of Alberta.

Regardless of political stripe, part of what President Obama said today could very well apply to Canadians as well.

Case in point: President Obama (edited):

What binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional is our allegiance to an idea;

While truths may be self-evident, they have never been self-executing;

You cannot replace the tyranny of a leader with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob;

When times change, so must we;

Preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action;

Our obligations are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity;

We must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the victims of prejudice;

We cannot treat name-calling as reasoned debate;

We must act, knowing that our work will be imperfect;

You and I, as citizens, have the power to set this country's course.

Obama as a second term president only has 24 months to govern under their system. Surely none of us are of the illusion that any of the parties actually rules the US. The actual owners of the US and Canada are the large corporations and they flex their muscle thru their lobby groups. Your vote and your party are an illusion of control.
Take for instance gun control. Most of us know that anything short of banning hand guns constitutes a gutless symbol designed to fail miserably. The next 24 months will find a president pretty well ineffective in making lasting change. Sorry to burst your bubble. The one bright hope we have is still revolution not evolution. Hopefully peaceful.

We're being sold to China, and at a discount price too. It's all about the fortune 500's lust for economic global domination.

It's sad, if this bill passes China can dispute bills passed on a provincial level here in Canada. I always thought our sovereignty would be lost to the USA but China sneaked in the back door with an offer Harper, the greedy troglodyte he is, could not refuse. And I'm sure there was plenty of incentive given to him as well. That's how these things work.

We're all being turned against each other while these back door deals are being done by our leaders, and we'll have no one but ourselves to blame for our passiveness, turning against each other as we have, and the fear of leaving our comfort zone for the sake of not taking any risks. Not wanting to poke the sleeping Lion.
