Good morning to all,
When ya get older, you realize there are some things you cant do anymore. Like get up on the roof, push your neighbours car out of the snow. Yepper..that snap, crackle, pop, is not the cereal, it is your body saying...DONT DO THAT!.
have a good day, dont over do the shovel thing, take your time. Dont want to see you laying on the ground with a heart attack. :-)
skipper dave 1/20/2013 5:42:29 AM Report

Good morning sweet Soo!
morning itsky!
On getting old - Yes you are right there are some things that become apparent that we are no longer young orang-utans . Now I fall into my philosophical mode forgive me?
I have only one life and it is enough if I live long enough to see change in me. I am a more patient man, I am a better Partner (now that I've learned to listen, truly listen). I am apparently (my kids and step kids do the qualifying on this one) a better parent.
The one area where discipline must exert itself for me is I limit my time grieving over all my screw ups of the past. My part in the failure of my first marriage, I wish it were not so, the number of times my daughters saw me drunk. The money I've stupidly thrown away but most of all the number of years I spent trying to run away from me. That grief must be felt and cried for but not to stay there!
Today is so much better itsky - I sit here by myself content and at peace. Enjoying my solitude for the four days that my family is away. My continuos battle with cancer has shown me what's truly important about life and what's not. Ex: When I'm watching a documentary on TV and one of my step kids comes in to ask how my day is going (bam) the child is looking to connect. Off with the TV on with the ears. Didn't know how to do that before.
I leave you with this simple set of instructions for a great marriage. It hangs on my office wall above my phone and brings me back to what's really important in life.

Could You Just Listen?
When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn't feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem.

Listen! All I asked was that you listen, not talk or do - just hear me.

Advice is cheap; 20 cents will get you both Dear Abby and Billy Graham in the same paper.

I can do for myself; I'm not helpless - maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless.

When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy.

But when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and can get about the business of understanding what's behind this irrational feeling.

When that's clear, the answers will come to me.

So, please listen and just hear me.

And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn - and I'll listen to you.

. . . Author Unknown

And my own quote - oz never gave nothin to the tin man that he didn't already have. Quote popular rock song of the seventies.

Good Morning Everybody

Skipper... good read as always, excellent advice in it.. sometimes it is the most difficult thing to just sit and listen.

Was great to see hockey again.. would have liked to see Pittsburgh play but Toronto was worth watching.

Football on today yippeee.

Going out to my daughter's in Goulais for a few hours after work.. then home to watch football

Who could ask for any more. Have a great day everyone. Be careful shoveling... don't over do it
flyhawk25 1/20/2013 8:07:06 AM Report

Skipper Dave...once again you have some good ideas to begin the day.
That reminded me of something a friend and colleague taught me.
He asked me once who my favorite student was. I thought for a bit and said that I really could not say - there were so many kids over the years.
So I asked him the same thing. And he said that it was the one that he was talking to at the moment.
Wow.
It took me years to finally see that there were always a pile of kids but only one of me. And in the rest of my career I finally started to see each one of them as individuals with their own stories.
Pity it took me so long to realize that.
skipper dave 1/20/2013 8:15:17 AM Report

the lighter side - Went back to bed this morn and just got up - What the hell happened to my driveway? it's gone. With all our technology do you think we could come up with a way of turning a switch to melt the drive or a robot snowblower to be operated from your front picture window remotely? Imagine having your coffee and remotely playing with the blower?
itsky123 1/20/2013 8:18:09 AM Report

Skipper Dave
unlike your self, I also have learned to smell the flowers, and look around and see how rich I realy am.
I have a loving wife, who is supportive in most of my decisions( and kicks my butt when needed.)I am 65, and hate this getting older. I still do my trade of 40 some years (bricklayer ) and I enjoy my work. I get cabin fever this time of year, looking forward to the spring. You Sir...are a inspiration to all.
skipper dave 1/20/2013 8:20:42 AM Report

When I moved here from Sudbury in my mid thirties I laughed at all you Sault wienies with your John Deers. That is until I used the snow float four times in one day to make the drive passable. Don't have to beat me with a stick to get me to change.
flyhawk25 1/20/2013 8:22:13 AM Report

Imagine?
My underground parking garage has a ramp just like that.
I moaned and complained yesterday when I actually had to use my snow brush in a parking lot.
For the second time this week.
Do you remember a few years ago when it started snowing Boxing Day and didn't seem to stop until Valentine's Day?
One of the happiest days of my life was when I sold my snow blower and lawn mower.
skipper dave 1/20/2013 8:25:31 AM Report

Itsky I am 65 and still employed. When asked when I will retire - A year before my death of course my body has to come along for the ride. So if you are still in your first marriage, enjoy your trade and understand the word moderation - you sir are the inspiration!

OH Yeah..I am retired, but cant give up my creative side, and it gives my wife a break with me out of the house( instead of me passing the apt.)..lol

You never know skipper, that little bit of discussion last evening about the false theory of evolution might spur me on. I doubt it though, it would all be for naught.
right wing 1/20/2013 10:17:18 AM Report

Spellchecker

That is because they do not want to discuss the fact that Darwin's theory has been proven wrong and this fact is being accepted by many in the scientific community.
This pretty much freaks the Dawkin's worshipers out as they just can't handle that they now might have to read some more books.
The most devastating thing for the Darwin fanatics were the advances in microbiology.
How devastating for them that it is science and not religion that put the first tears into this very old theory.
This is not easy as Darwins theory is a first generation theory and essentially needs no proof, just theory.
Imagine if Darwin himself could come back and peer into a modern day microscope revealing complex mechanisms requiring hundreds of parts working together at once, complex cellular structures, DNA, blood-clotting mechanisms, molecules, and the cell's tiny flagellum and cilium.
Darwin's theory was that life started with single celled life forms and the discovery of these complex structures consisting of multiple parts each relying on the other all but dissolves that.
Darwin himself stated that if they could ever discover this that he would be wrong.
Well we have.
right wing 1/20/2013 10:36:38 AM Report

Spellchecker

Did not want to misquote.

"If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down."

This has been, without question, demonstrated.
I don't understand why some of those claiming to be a "scientific" thinker (us amateurs ones) are so afraid of this.
With this being true does it not make way for further scientific study and further the chances of arriving at the truth.
The exploration of string theory may endanger Einsteins theory of relativity and one day bring about it's faults, but this does not bring about the end....but rather the beginning of something wonderful and new.
Perhaps in secret they believe what I openly like to discuss, how science will one day prove, without a doubt, the existence of a creator.
skipper dave 1/20/2013 10:37:03 AM Report

right wing - say it ain't so! I'm living proof - Got five brothers with hairlines down to their eyebrows, I before chemo, chrome dome. Their knuckles drag on the ground, I walk upright. They have a seven word vocabulary of which they use four, I went beyond grade eight. If you line us all up can you not see evolutionary progress at work?
right wing 1/20/2013 10:50:14 AM Report

Hahahaha...no, you would see DNA at work.
Your mudders and you fadders.....

...and skipper, I am not saying that evolution does not play a role, for it is obvious that it does.
Just not with Darwin's theory of natural selection.
right wing 1/20/2013 10:54:20 AM Report

...and skipper, my older brother is completely bald as is my younger.
I have hair, thinning it is and grey but still some on the roof.

Can of worms…

It’s hard to be faithful to any ideal, particularly Christianity, when much of its foundation was determined by a bunch of clerics sitting around a table some 1700 years ago.

Similarly, it’s difficult to base my faith on teachings that use a collection of so-called ‘God-inspired’ writings that contain stories of questionable value in the modern era.

Oh, ya!!! I’m only supposed to use the good parts and reject the questionable stuff.

skipper dave 1/20/2013 1:09:44 PM Report

rw damn it I have to agree with you again. I don't know why some thick heads keep rejecting it when all you have to do is look around to believe. I'm not talking about the mouth breathing knuckle draggers but folks who are certainly bright enough to get it. Carry on.
right wing 1/20/2013 3:31:56 PM Report

Grump

Having somebody like "theprotector" post what he does all the while calling others dumb brings a whole new meaning to the word stupid.
The problem with folks like the "theprotector" is they are completely unaware that the closest they'll ever get to a brainstorm is a light drizzle.
When making hamburger helper they call up another person for help and believe that menopause is button on their DVD.
The last thing they failed was their own blood test and from childhood they believed Peter Pan's a wash basin in a whorehouse.
They don't watch sixty minutes because it takes them two hours.
We need folks like "theprotector" around as they live in such complete blissful ignorance.
The rest of us can breath a sigh of relief and realize while we may not know everything at least we're nowhere close to that category of stupid.

You may and thanks for saying so.
Humour is the best gift we as humans have been given.
First learn to laugh at oneself, then focus on what folks supply for you.
I'd like to say it's all original stuff, some is, but I simply have and always had a great capacity for remembering, especially what I read.
I think of humour like this...it's all butter...what you are spreading it on is the only thing that changes.
RLE 1/20/2013 5:11:09 PM Report

Winter boredom??? You are kidding, right?

Snow Shovelling: I’ve done it 24 times this winter, since Nov. 24th; Bon Soo starts in 12 days, for 10 days of fun. Too bad about cancelling the snow sculptures; I-500 is in two weeks. Nothing like ear-splitting noise and the smell of blue exhaust (Love it). Drive over on ‘Empty’ and come back ‘Full’; Searchmont is open, even if you go there just to watch 4-year olds master something I never did. Making it down the hills without falling; There are X-C ski trails. They look much better when you ‘Do a loop’; Snowmobile trails are there for those who invested a whole whack of moolah for 6 weeks of exhaust-sucking, crotch-cracking, chiropractic calisthenics. How about ice fishing, skating, snowshoeing, library, museum, art gallery, and so much more.

And of course, there’s lots of free entertainment… just stand at any intersection downtown during, or just after a snow fall.
statusquo 1/20/2013 8:09:06 PM Report

Ahh, good old Bon Soo,

A collection of the dispossessed.
Snot nosed kids of ethnically different backgrounds wondering what the faux excitement is all about.
Community day in winter sans pit-bulls and tattoos.
I'd rather watch the Discovery Channel and "learn" about Darwin's mistakes.
"Waiting for summer my pastures to change".
