Good Morning Sweet Soo!
The eve of the teachers one day strike. Don't know bout you folks but on this one I've got to go with the step kids, bring it on - we don't call them strike days or snow days, I've taught my kids to call them "Lolly gagging" days. They are well defined, you do what you want and the dress for the day is PJ's. Since I've met these little gaffers it has been an objective of mine to teach them how to do a mental health day. I'm learning for instance to express my own anger rather than grow tumours. They are catching on. My little princess handed in a project that was just OK and not done over the top aimed at perfection. She and I were so proud. If I had an epitaph I would want it to read "that's good enough". Ex: my misses the mechanic in the family replaced the sump pump hose last nite with that clear 1 1/2" reinforced very expensive c/w reducers last a lifetime stuff. What was on there was a chunk of three foot plastic corrugated hose that sells for ten bucks a hundred foot. I put it in last year and it worked well until it became a soaker hose thru chaffing along the side of the pit. P.S. don't tell rw. I went and made supper, moral of the story is "that's good enough" maybe the wrong attitude to bring to the table for some tasks such as sump pump stuff and open heart surgery. Speaking of hospitals I'm off like a herd of turtles in a spray of sheep shit and gravol.

Good morning all. The phone rang last night and my wife answered it and ended up bent over double laughing. This went on for a while and she finally handed me the phone. A little voice said this is Chief Spence and I'm hungry and on and on. I finally recognized the voice which belonged to a good friend from Garden River. He said the First Nations members are backing away from her and he felt she was digging herself a huge hole now. We were both laughing so hard I didn't get a chance to ask if that was general or just a local opinion. It's too bad some of the Whiteys on here can't develope a sense of humour which most of the First Nations folk I know have.

There is something not right to allow someone to blackmail our government ..anyone else would be questioned and investigated with zeal.. BTW …It is blackmail … political and emotional blackmail, and all of the FN people will certainly suffer because of it. Spencer is only thinking of one person ..herself and now because of her antics has set the FN back …way back. I have no respect for people of any race to use underhanded tactics to try and get their own way. Well she is now in the spot light and has received attention, however this sort of attention is probably not what she wanted, with accusations of misappropriating of funds that were meant to help and not to be a slush fund for herself and relatives as she sees fit. I can only hope the government will address this as aggressive as they would if anyone else tried to defraud or mislead the government. This will now give the Gov the power and excuse to shut down many of the funds, and make it very difficult for the FN people in the future to get any assistance. I am not a racist person of any sort , I just do not like people that have such a sense of entitlement about everything in life. I hope the government is not racist either, and when they investigate, I hope they investigate this in the same manner, as they would investigate any other business or person or citizen that is suspect of any wrong doing. Karma is a bitch ...and now it may just bite the FN in the ass, thanks to their misguided leaders.

Skipper... You may get a kick out of this poem... It's "Pretty Good", written by Charles Osgood (now of CBS Sunday Morning)
From The Osgood File (1986)
There once was a pretty good student
Who sat in a pretty good class
And was taught by a pretty good teacher
Who always let pretty good pass.
He wasn’t terrific at reading,
He wasn’t a whiz-bang at math,
But for him, education was leading
Straight down a pretty good path.
He didn’t find school too exciting,
But he wanted to do pretty well,
And he did have some trouble with writing
Since nobody taught him to spell.
When doing arithmetic problems,
Pretty good was regarded as fine.
5+5 needn’t always add up to be 10;
A pretty good answer was 9.
The pretty good class that he sat in
Was part of a pretty good school,
And the student was not an exception:
On the contrary, he was the rule.
The pretty good school that he went to
Was there in a pretty good town,
And nobody there seemed to notice
He could not tell a verb from a noun.
The pretty good student in fact was
Part of a pretty good mob.
And the first time he knew what he lacked was
When he looked for a pretty good job.
It was then, when he sought a position,
He discovered that life could be tough,
And he soon had a sneaking suspicion
Pretty good might not be good enough.
The pretty good town in our story
Was part of a pretty good state
Which had pretty good aspirations
And prayed for a pretty good fate.
There once was a pretty good nation
Pretty proud of the greatness it had,
Which learned much too late,
If you want to be great,
Pretty good is, in fact, pretty bad.
Big Bad Bob 1/10/2013 11:01:11 AM Report
In catching up on yesterday’s Archive, the following thought occurred to me: whatever the outcome of the latest kerfuffle concerning the financial affairs of Attawapiskat, it is only one First Nation. No matter what goes on - good or bad – in one First Nation does not automatically hold for all of them and it would be wrong, if not a symptom of extreme prejudice, for anyone to believe or say so.

I have to applaud Julian Fantino for his musings on the $1 billion relief fund sent to Haiti. With a billion dollars already sent there yes we expect to see results. Especially when other countries have also been very generous with their funds. I understand this country was completely devastated but it is time we look after our own people and put our billion dollars into looking after our own poor and destitute. Yes that may sound crass but at a time when we are demanding FN to show results for $90 million in our own country I want to see tangible results for our $1 billion.

this morning the that the Conservative government's response to the crisis in Attawapiskat was unreasonable and failed to look at any remedy other than the appointment of a Third Party Manager.
Rather that own up to their mistake the Conservative government says it is "disappointed" with the decision. What will it take for this government to take responsibility for its own incompetence?
The court made it clear that Attawapiskat did not mismanage funds, as the Conservatives -- from the Prime Minister on down -- accused them of doing in an attempt to deflect blame from themselves. It also made clear that the decision to appoint a third party manager during the Attawapiskat crisis was unreasonable. But this is part of a much broader issue."

The government sent a truckload or two of money in there, sent in a bunch of houses, sent in another truckload of money and when they sent in somebody to ask where it went got stonewalled. Now ,if the city had of done the same for you or me,they would have asked for an accounting right down to the penny and if you didn't provide it they would have asked for it back, and you would have had to give it all back,no matter what. That is the difference. We(government)gave all kinds of it to them up there and there was no accountability for most of it.
Secondly,I stand by my statement,if there is no work,move....There probably isn't 10 people in that whole village that make a living off the land as their forefathers did(illegal hunting out of season doesn't count)so move where there is work and get over it. Keep the land to go hunting on or have a cottage there but get the hell out in the real world and get a job..You had to get out and get one, didn't you? Have you not ever moved for the sake of employment? I have ,lots of times. I had a family to feed and did what ever it took to do so and I'm no better than anyone else. Income tax time is coming. Wish they were lower? I have a plan. Stick with me on this,
Most people in Canada get a small refund when they file their taxes each spring. It's sort of a pleasant experience when the refund arrives. Of course what this really means is that the government has taken too much off your paycheck and has collected interest on your money that should be in your pocket. Nice system, they take your money early and a little too much. If they raise your taxes they takeoff a little extra to ensure you will still get the refund of your own money. They've tricked you into feeling grateful as they nick you for more and more.
The solution? Simple, drastic but simple: Stop all income tax deductions from paychecks.
Imagine what would happen each March when we all did our income tax and had to come up with the thousands of dollars each of us would owe. There would be such an uproar about the amount of money the government takes from us. Accountability would be demanded and if the taxes were not lowered we would tar and feather every politician we could get our hands on.
Will this happen? Not bloody likely, but I can dream.

BBB: fortunately there are only a few like "old enough to know better" who likes to make derogatory and inflammatory references to "injuns". And he/she claims to be native Canadian. Why? Because he/she was born here? The original ancestor of every single white on this continent was born somewhere else. Just as the original ancestor of every single "injun" was born somewhere else. And the reference to Indians comes from the fact that some white man from Italy landed over here in 1492, lost, thinking he had found India, met up with the locals who were here for thousands of years before he arrived, and called them Indians. Those Indians today are only too happy that the white guy wasn't searching for Turkey at the time!!!

dreamer, why should it be news? she is a fraud and I would be willing to bet odds that most of the leaders(sic) that went to see her are kicking their collective asses now that some of the truths are starting to come out. Most of these guys are just looking for a parade to get in front of for publicity and now it's gonna bite them in the ass.Pretty soon she is going to demand the Pope and jesus show up for this meeting or she ain't going. Methinks she may have been eating fish broth a bit tooooooo long....:)

Good idea,Snobank, but the employer has no choice in the matter. The only way around it is to be an independent contractor and even then you have to pay quarterly or they come after you. I am on OAS and CPP and I still have to pay taxes,if I don't they just deduct it from my cheque. I was overpaid on CPP disability(their fault) and I am paying 110 bucks a month for the rest of my life until it's paid back, and they don;'t give a damn if I have enough left to live on or not..Kinda glad to be able to get my foot in the door as Metis, just hope I live long enough...:)

I am all for dispelling myths.
I read your link and the suggestion, based on three examples, that it is First Nations that has been subsidizing Canada.
I have not researched the other two (yet, and I will) but the claim that Attawapiskat does not have an agreement with De Beers Mining is completely untrue.
This one I had researched extensively and did so when the housing crisis first came to light.
Attawapiskat and De Beers had an IBA
(Impact Benefit Agreement)since the mine began construction in 2006.
That agreement includes specific compensation and protocols to ensure Attawapiskat First Nation is the primary beneficiary of benefits available during the construction, operation and closure of the Victor Mine.
Compensation includes items such as training, employment, business opportunities and direct financial compensation.
Since the start of construction, over $325 million in contracts have been awarded to solely owned or joint venture companies run by the community.
If you try and trace this money I hope you have more luck than I did as there seems to be no solid answers as to where it went.
There were other that had similar concerns.
Check out Mike Koostachin he is from Attawapiskat and works as a cultural liaison in the schools teaching Cree values to children.
He started the blockade to De Beers mine just outside of Attawapiskat.
In an interview he had very harsh words for both De Beers and First Nations leaders.
This is part of that interview with Mike Koostachin by Marc Choyt.
How was the original IBA agreed upon?
It was voted on, as a referendum. People wanted the mining to go ahead. About 270 said yes, and 80 to 90 that said no.
People that said, yes, thought that they would get money from the project, in their hands. They were promised 2 million a year—a million up front for signing the agreement and 2 million a year for the life time of the mine. Basically, it would be 30 million over the course of the mine to 1800 to 2000 community members. Less than 20% voted, but De Beers said it was 90%.
Why didn’t more people vote?
People were not really into the process of it—there was a lack of understanding.
Then, during the referendum, the community had a signing agreement ceremony. Now, we have nothing from the IBA and no employment opportunities.
Have members of the tribe, the larger community, get the money?
No. There has been no money. The leadership established a trust fund for the community. Though the funds are there, but there is no accountability, no reports from the tribal leadership report to the shareholders.
Still don’t know what the IBA money is doing?
But De Beers can’t be blamed for that.
It is the First Nation’s leader’s fault. They have funds coming into first nation – no transparency, to this day.
You can find the full interview on the internet.
With First Nations members like Mike Koostachin demanding transparency from their own leaders combined with continued pressure on the government of the day, hopefully these issues will one day be resolved.

I like your thinking, however it will never happen because Canada followed the U K pattern of taxation, especially for employees. The employer is responsible for taking a set amount off your paycheque every week/fortnight/month as set out in a set of tables from Revenue Canada. In England it was called P.A.Y.E or pay as you earn. You can ask your employer to take MORE but he cannot take LESS. Only way you do not have to pay is if you have your own business then of course you can set your own income and deductions as you wish, until of course they audit you and then, your various bodily orfices may become much larger than normal!!!

"De Beers has negotiated a lease area. Although it is acknowledged that the mine is on Attawapiskat traditional land, the royalties from Victor Mine, flow to the Province of Ontario, not Attawapiskat First Nation. They have 500 full-time employees with 100 from Attawapiskat First Nation."
There is a lot more to that interview with M Koostachin.
It points to the complex issues troubling Attawapiskat.
