Good morning sweet Soo! Me and my new plastic sewer system are up early. I'm hoping more than I watched the Puc presentation on future rate hikes of 5 to 10% per annum to cover the costs of replacing the water main infrastructure over the next thirty years. I'm fascinated at how much the man with the brief case can sell snake oil to lay people. RW I'm hoping you watched. Brief case guy showed pretty charts of how long the present pipes are in the ground and what kind of life expectancy we hope to get out of them and using present day costs how much it will costs to replace. I found the whole presentation flawed from an engineering stand point. First the biggest = do you know how much technological change there will be in the next thirty years with respect to putting pipes in the ground. What if we think of the old pipe as an existing ready made horizontal shaft in place just waiting for us to insert a high carbon plastic pipe inside it from manhole to manhole? Can we live with a slightly smaller diameter main? We have line drilling now that allows us to drill horizontal holes some distance, possibly from manhole to manhole. The individual tap offsI leave to the experts like RW. What I'm saying is you may be able to think outside the box and not have to add the costs of replacing the road, by the way nobody choked on that relationship. Another biggy, what if we gamble, put money aside to replace as they fail? Empirically the data must show that they like us don't all fall down dead at the age of 74.8 years - Some pipes may live to be a hundred. Where was the city's engineering staff last night to challenge these estimates? Based on the Brief case guys presentation we are all faced with whopping big increases to bring everything up to snuff. Here's another thought who says the water main has to run under the street? Put the new ones under the sidewalk and leave the street alone? Somebody think outside the box before these guys start planning a new palatial palace to replace the thirty year old one down the road.

Yesterday I took the new Pine street extension to the second line hoping to bypass a few lights ,save some time ,pollute the atmosphere a litle less and idle a little less. After a few minutes of waiting a few cars took off turned right on second line pulled u-turns and came back up second line and were gone.I waited some more and the same thing happened, more cars took off, same thing u-turn,they were gone.I waited some more ,same thing. They should have put the sign up (EXTENDED WAIT)whtf is wrong with this engineering here, its electronics for Gods sake fix it.Now we have a accident waiting to happen.Again.

I don't know if there is a correlation between these but it strikes me that both the PUC and the SAH have become more of a 'professional workplace for suits' for wont of a better term.
The days of the Charlie Murphys at the PUC and the Grey Sisters at the hospital have been taken over by an apparent need to 'improve' our lives.
One could make the same case with Sault College. But the difference is that the former have a captive audience who have no other recourse.
The College needs clients who expect good outcomes and go elsewhere if they don't.
Just a thought to consider.

The term a lot use are pryamid builders, and instead of the traditional way of building from the ground up they start at the top and build down! Presidents have to have vice presidents who have to have assistants and secretaries, they in turn have to have managers who have to have supervisors, who have to have foremen/women in order to stay above the rank and file, thus inulating themselves from the inevetable cutback when the wage bill gets too big, or to put it another way... dogs have fleas, upon their backs to bite them, and little fleas have smaller fleas, and so ad infinitum...
RLE 1/8/2013 9:03:00 AM Report

Flyhawk:

Perhaps the following adds to your point.

A few momths ago I paid my PUC bill and Shaw bill on-line. In both cases before the due date. For whatever reason the payment was not received by either company prior to the due date. When I received my next bill I noticed that both companies had charged interest. I went to PUC and basically was told to go away, shut up and pay the interest. At Shaw cable the interest was rescinded. PUC is a monopoly. Shaw has competition. In both cases I provided proof that I had made my payment prior to the due date. As the amount of money was not significant I did not pursue the matter further, but from that point on the taste of the water was not the only thing that left a bad taste.

I just read the article regarding the water rate increase for the next 10 years.

Only in the Sault would this be tolerated. Currently we have water that is less than acceptable in purity and taste, yet we will allow an increase for a sub-standard product.

Let's face it, this corporation is NOT accountable to anyone ! Case in point is the new building, the cost of which may have put a dent in the water rate increase !

Second point, even the councillors in Ward 1 do not respond to emails, phone calls etc. anymore.

Suck it up Saultites, we have created this mess over many years, and it will take an act of a supreme power to clean it up !

Just wait for the crash of ESSAR and the Lottery leaving town happens in the near future, the increase in water rates will be the least of our cities worries.

Hope everyone has a happy new year !

There is something seriously wrong with the underlying value of our Canadian principles when the mayor of Toronto loses his job over a $3,150.00 donation to his football foundation without a declared conflict of interest while Chief Spence is heralded as an inspiration even though she cannot account for 104 million dollars of taxpayer funds.

I for one feel saddened by the revelation that all is not kosher with our hunger campaign. Again we have victims. When we put people on a pedestal and we all do, checking their resume should be a must. Like a candidate running for office, make sure you are squeaky clean, you will be found out. So if there is a hint of truth about this Chief then I feel saddened for the people who have been duped. The cause is still just and right but that may be overshadowed and lost thru the discrediting of the messenger. I'm wondering if maybe the first nations hire some objective legal advice before starting off on this type of campaign. Like getting in a tank full of sharks before knowing anything about their feeding habits. Wouldn't surprise me if the conservatives had full knowledge for some time but waited for the maximum impact.

Skipper you are too nice a guy. I would be surprised had they not had that info all along.
Budster 1/8/2013 10:01:38 AM Report

Skipper you are right timing is everything in p;olitics. I believe that Harper planned this release for maximum impact but for him to be able to do this there had to be some lead time because these audits are not a one day affair. So I also believe Spence had forewarning that it was coming and what they would find...hence Harper had better timing than Spence. Notice Spence didn't allow any questions from reporters since the release.
Wicket 1/8/2013 11:18:25 AM Report

The last part of my post from yesterday evening, referring to a CBC news report concerning the audit:

??? Funding was meant for housing, education, infrastructure and other services and then the audit says ' could not do really was to determine whether the money was spent the way it was intended to be'??? What???? "Funding conditions may not have been met." What???? Ask the people living there, was infrastructure (I assume meaning water, sewer, electrical infrastructure) done? Do they have adequate housing with heat, running water, etc. (housing); are the children attending a school housed in a decent building to receive their education. Really! How hard can it be to determine whether monies did actually get spent on what it was intended to be for??

What's really sad is that Chief Spence's hunger strike occurred near the same time as the Idle No more movement.

There is no connection between the two except what is being generated by the media.

My understanding is that the Chief is on a hunger strike to get Haprer to meet with all of the Chief's while the Idle No More movement is a protest against the omnibus bill stripping the need for environmental assessments prior to any work taking place ie mining, oil pipelines etc and the selling of reserved lands....

Her common-law partner and co-manager of Attawapiskat, Clayton Kennedy, said there are no allegations of "misappropriation or anything like that."

Kennedy defended his and Spence's reported combined household income of about $250,000 a year, saying: "I think it's adequate for the job that is being done."

Pink - her next move was played today to further deflect the attention on the audit. She stated she was adding to the cause of her hunger strike and demanding measures of the C45 Bill be removed.

She is playing the same game she is accusing the Government of. Creating smoke screens to steer the public eye away from the truth.

Chief Spence is a joke and the people of Attawapiskat need to know this and demand her removal. They deserve more and can have it if she leaves and they can replace her with someone with morals and accountability to their people. They can make this happen much easier than we can with our Governement. But, we would stand beside them and help them fight! There are many reserves that have done much more for their people with less money and resources so we know it can be done.

I see comments about posters complaining about money, blah, blah. I am not arguing against the people of Attawapiskat and their funding. I am saying it has not been managed properly and the evidence is clear when you see pictures and video of the state of the reserve. So please don't put me in the category of people arguing about who deserves what money, where it comes from or anything else. They have the right to the money but deserve someone who will do the job right.

I worked closely with local First Nations people and saw some wonderful and some very bad nepotistic things going on.

I'm on equal billing with the PUC. I learned that way of cooking about 3 years ago. Since then, the amount I have to pay has gone down close to $50 per month. PUC has paid me back money every year so far. 1st, they gave me back about $600. Last year, it was only $13. Year before, about $200. Having the house insulated helped big time too. I keep my thermostat 10 degrees F lower than before and I don't have to turn the heaters on, on the east side. Next (anything to pay less to PUC), I'm going to get a wood burning stove to heat the place. My house is small and I should save about $1000/1100 per year on PUC. Wood will cost me about $500-600 per year. An added bonus will be that I'll get good exercise chopping, piling, etc!

JC, copied and pasted

My aunt taught me something a few years ago about cooking veggies like turnip, carrots, potatoes. It saves on electricity if you have an electric stove.

Instead of covering veggies with water, bring to a boil and continue to boil until tender, try this.

Put a bit of water (an inch or so, all veggies won't be covered) in the pot with veggies. Put the lid on tight. Bring to a boil, then turn off the burner. Don't remove the lid for about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. They'll be done, tender. You will have very little water to drain and that means fewer nutrients lost too.

Or do they care?
