Good morning everyone,keep it up, no politics like yesterday,very good.
skipper dave 1/7/2013 7:09:59 AM Report

Good morning sweet Soo! Rug rats return to school and for someone like me who enjoys their company they will be missed. Big day at city hall, the relationship betwixt council and city owned PuC will be discussed and tweaked. If not for the SAH and fatigue I would attend. Much more engaging when live rather than thru the tele. From what I've gleaned from out resident expert is the taste is a non issue that will gradually disappear. The aging infrastructures failure frequency will increase with time (you went to school for that?) The new HQ will save us money down the road and the donation was a one time screw up that won't happen again. Oh yes one other fact besides Steve Butland loving his own voice is the smart meters in conjunction with the rate increases are not responsible for the almost doubling of your invoices. it's our refusal to conserve and to vote Liberal you dummies. Sorry Bounder but there's a tad of politics in this little dirge.
mac headrick 1/7/2013 7:14:47 AM Report

skipper dave City Council well it isn't about logic - always politics.

But vote Liberal isn't Steve traditionally NDP kinda guy?

Grace 1/7/2013 7:20:47 AM Report

Skipper..if the seats in the gallery were a bit more comfortable maybe more would go out to watch.
skipper dave 1/7/2013 7:29:58 AM Report

Mac, love your stuff - the Steve comment was a tongue and cheek response to Steve's personality and in no way was meant to confer any political stripe on his personage. The liberal comment was used as an example of the very twisted logic you mention.
P.S. hows the adoption process of the pugs going? I've farmed out my two maltese to family till treatment is finished and I miss then dearly.

I think its funny that all these new uic rules come out and the feds canned everyone's ass down at the poggy office! Really so whats the point? The only people left down there are the people who tell you to go use the computer or call the 1800 number.

If you buy your gas across the river...You should watch this and see what you are getting for your so called cheap gas..It is not the tax difference.

Watch video about E15 gas if you have a car older than 2012

Thanks!

Wisenheimer 1/7/2013 8:37:50 AM Report

Do not put E-15 gas into your "flex" fuel vehicle. It causes engine to run crappy in the Summer and in the Winter. Also gets horrible mileage. The vehicle's manual even tells you this. The blend is O.K. at 15%.
Corn is of better use when fed to cattle. Marathon sells E-15. Do not be tempted to "fill er up".
Mr. Poster 1/7/2013 8:45:11 AM Report

I wonder how folks will ever be able to travel to Florida without filling up with american gas.
bounder 1/7/2013 8:47:41 AM Report

E15 Gas is a blended fuel,not the regular gas you buy in three different grades..Ethenol fuel or flex,don't use.Marathon sells good gas,it,s your choice.A blank statement about cheap gas over the river is nothing but blended fuel shows a lack of research.

Results of the INDEPENDENT audit of Spence and the spending of her reserve under her watch is now out on the CBC. No surprise that it shows complete mismanagement and lack of due diligence.

What a coincidence, eh? Just a few weeks before the audit was to be released, and which Spence has known the results since last August - she goes on a "hunger strike".
(BTW, now the ever-gullible msm are calling the hunger strike a "liquid diet". LOL
If the msm paints this as anything other than the complete fraud it is, then shame, shame on them.

learningaswego 1/7/2013 10:48:16 AM Report

The ONLY way any change will happen, IMHO, is if the people on reserves DEMAND the change or accountability, from their OWN leaders.
The leaders and their bedmates - opposition politicians - will always of course try to make "the government" out to be the problem, because they both have much to gain by doing so.
Left Winger 1/7/2013 10:54:32 AM Report

Grumpy

you just don't get it do you? once again for your reading pleasure

"Carol Martin 1/5/2013 11:37:41 AM Report

Comments questioning how our neighbours spend their money will be deleted because they perpetuate a racist myth that Anishinaabe and other First Nations citizens are supported by Canadian's tax dollars and Canadians are owed some explanation of how their money is being spent.

First Nations are sovereign nations. The transfer payments made to them are part of our obligations under treaties. Their governments are beholding to no one but their own citizens for the way they spend their money.

Canadians have no more right to ask how our neighbours in the Cree, Ojibway or other nations spend their money than we do to ask where the United States spends its money and, even if the majority of us believe the softwood lumber tariffs (for example) imposed on us by our American neighbours under one of the treaties we have with them are unfair we still have to pay them, just as we have to pay for the things our forefathers agreed to when the treaties were negotiated with our Cree, Ojibway, Iroquois and other neighbour nations.

We have a right to complain if we think a treaty is unfair but, to suggest that the nations we made that treaty with are accountable to our scrutiny is racist"

So basically Carol is saying it's none of your or anyone else's business other then the Natives.

so climb down off of your soapbox and take a break from the keyboard
Grump 1/7/2013 11:07:22 AM Report

Left Winger I get it you are a moron but bright enough to paste and copy. This is the type of information that First Nations need to be able to hold their Chiefs accountable. Now try to reason that out for yourself before you post another rehash.
Pink Peony 1/7/2013 11:09:13 AM Report

When somebody screams "state of emergency", "housing crisis" and expects it to be fixed by others, we have a right to ask "how did it get to that?". It is our business. Although our government assisted with the housing crisis, they wanted more! We have the right to ask questions and get answers.
Right Winger 1/7/2013 11:20:15 AM Report

TankGirl 1/7/2013 11:22:21 AM Report

So CBC is racist? LOL!

Left Winger - you are taking Carols comments out of context. She is not going to delete every comment related to FN funding and money. We are allowed to freely speak (type) as long as we are not twisting, falsifying or implying racism. Talking about this audit and its findings ARE NOT RACIST and IS OUR BUSINESS should it interest us as a topic of discussion. Period.

Grump 1/7/2013 11:23:45 AM Report

Right on P.P. It seems that several news networks also feel they have the right to publish and question this type of missmanagement

Yes you have a right to ask but please ask the right people namely the Feds.

If you are unhappy about the current affairs then contact your federal rep but quit coming on here bitc#3ng and whining cuz' it is not getting the job done.

Better yet, why not apply for the proper permts and hold a rally outside Bryan Hayes' offices demanding he get to the bottom of this...and good luck with that as no politican will touch the issue with a ten foot stick because they know it'll come back to bite them in the a**.

I'm sure you can get a few of these keyboard commando's on here to join you just make sure you pick a warm day since most of them are getting on in years and can't take the cold like they use to.

In spite of being dirt-poor, my parents and elders gave me a weekly allowance.

By the time I was a teen, I was able to transfer that allowance into pretty well anything I wanted. I chose wisely, learned a lot, worked hard, and retired early.

By the way, no money was ever exchanged. What my parents gave me as a weekly allowance was knowledge, guidance, support, esteem, and honesty.

Information and good lessons should always be shared.

The accountants just finished their audit for spence's reserve and there are millions of taxpayer dollars missing with NO ACCOUNTABILITY !!!!!!!!
This is OUTRAGEOUS !!!!!!!!!!!
Mayor Fontana misplaced about $21,000
federal dollars and he is up for 4 charges and is going to court. This is good but what about spence. If what is in the news is true, she should end up in jail and throw away the key.
I don't think this is an over reaction here. This spence is a real piece of work and I seriously hope that our federal government is going to deal with this alleged criminal behavior as they would if it were a non native carrying out these outragious acts.

Grump, thank you for the link to Sunnews about the Chief millionair club. I watched it to the end. The chief from the east coast getting over $900,000 is not news to me. My neighbour told me about that. She comes from the east cost.
The chiefs and council get the money and the poor Indians that are left
live in squalor.
I believe Ms Spence went on a hunger strike (a real hunger strike like Ghandi did is only water) because she was trying to divert the media from the mismanagement of her reserve. The CBC (WHO HATE HARPER) actually talked about a copy that they received of the Attiwapiskat audit. Lots of money not accounted for. There was also more monies given to the reserve by mining copy, something like $57 MILLION, and 100 members of the band work there also.
PLEASE folks don't think that I am a racist, which is what happens when you even mention anything concerning natives, my great-grandmother was pure Iroquois on my dad's side, and on my mom's side also native blood.

Sorry to offend your sensibilities fly. Funny how some people can come on this site and denigrate certain politicians or political parties and think they are being cute as long as they stick a "smiley face" at the end of their idiot comments. I'll crap on the Chief just like I would crap on anyone that I think deserves it. With the news coming out about the massive mis-management at the so-called Chiefs' reserve I think all Canadians should crap on this poor excuse for a "leader".
Pink Peony 1/7/2013 1:00:26 PM Report

TankGirl, that is such a good question! I think it would be difficult. Many are so dependent and believe that their leaders are doing the best they can by them. I may be wrong. How do we open their eyes? I liken it to an abused child...they don't say anything, they're so dependent and scared. So they end up suffering and often times grow up to carry things on the way they were. There are some that would be able to see clearly but how to unite them while excluding all the leaders...good question.
the_mage 1/7/2013 1:13:54 PM Report

Well there you go. I've been wondering when this was all going to happen.

Harper better bring a quarter pounder with cheese.
Wicket 1/7/2013 1:27:06 PM Report

Most of the citizens of Attiwapiskat travel to Timmins to make purchases. If you know any native people there that would make them aware of what is going on without the propaganda, then do so. I am totally unaware of what news they actually receive in such a remote community. Do they have satelite TV where they would be aware of this themselves, or computers, or would the average household have phones? They need to be made aware of reality and not through anyone that is on the payroll of the community.
And, was one of the East coast reserves, by any chance, Restigouche in the Gaspe? It is one of the wealthiest and the chief supposedly/allegedly will not allow staff to respond to people trying to trace ancestory as he does not want to give up land or money by descendants making claims.

steelworker...you raised a valid point re. humor.
If you are referring to SQ I find him funny but at times like all of us who use humor to make a point he occasionally goes a bit far.
I have done it myself on occasion.
But I have gotten to know him through the Summits and enjoy his comments. I don't recall having met or gotten to know you.
Lest you think that just because SQ and I share a common left slant on things I agree with him I don't always.
But the opposite is true with Spelly. We do not agree at all politically but I enjoy his company enough to drive to Hilton in the summer to meet with him.
Finally - recently I was taken to task in an e-mail from a regular conservative poster on here for writing things he considered hurtful.
After I thought about it awhile I realized that I had done so unintentionally and apologized.
His friendship and political viewpoint are far too valuable to me to try to hurt his feelings.
My point is perhaps if I knew you I would better understand your thought process. I find many of your comments insightful even if I don't always agree with them.
I hope that clears this up for you.

I remember Ms. Arsenault's coverage and the position of Ms. Spence has been untenable from the get go. Like many, I was suspicious when the hunger strike started and now that the auditor's report is out, I can only guess that she was hoping that she could get Harper to meet her before the report to "deflect". I bet Paul Martin is feeling a little foolish today. The cynic in me predicts that shortly before the Harper meeting, Ms. Spence will be "rushed" to hospital.
If nothing else comes out of this, I hope that that grassroots First Nations people will fare better in the future and I hope that issues like waterway management do not get flushed away with the Spence issue.

I would really like to have this discussion with you at some time...The feds are giving up to the provinces all the little lakes and streams that they in conjunction with the provinces they jointly used to have control over, and just keeping control of the larger bodies of water and rivers. Now if you think that is wrong I disagree with you, if I lived alonside a stream say like Stokley creek and I wanted to put in a turbine I have to get federal and provincial permission then it would not get done due to the cost of two enviromental studies and the min of fish and oceans study.. Do you really think that the Provincial will be any kinder than the Federal? When the Province has the full power , maybe things will get done or not done any quicker but with a lower cost. From a CBC news report:
The audit was requested by the federal government to ensure that the approximately $104 million it provided to Attawapiskat between April 2005 and November 2011 was spent as it should have been. The accounting firm Deloitte was engaged to perform the audit in December 2011.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``
The funding was intended for housing, infrastructure, education and other services. CBC News obtained a copy of the audit before it was made public. ~~~~
In a letter dated Aug. 28, 2012 that was written by Deloitte to Chief Spence and copied to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the auditing firm says that of 505 transactions reviewed, more than 400 lacked proper documentation.
The letter says "an average of 81 per cent of files did not have adequate supporting documents and over 60 per cent had no documentation of the reason for payment."
The letter to Spence also says there is "no evidence of due diligence on the part of Attawapiskat of funding provided by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada for housing projects and Health Canada for health-related projects."
Funding conditions may not have been met
~~~~~~~~~
CBC News's National Affairs Editor Chris Hall says the audit shows "fairly significant findings" about the problems on the reserve, "but what the audit could not do really was to determine whether the money was spent the way it was intended to be."~~~~~~`

My comments:
??? Funding was meant for housing, education,infrastructure and other services and then the audit says ' could not do really was to determine whether the money was spent the way it was intended to be'??? What???? "Funding conditions may not have been met." What???? Ask the people living there, was infrastructure (I assume meaning water, sewer, electrical infrastructure) done? Do they have adequate housing with heat, running water, etc. (housing); are the children attending a school housed in a decent building to receive their education. Really! How hard can it be to determine whether monies did actually get spent on what it was intended to be for??

Grump,
You've achieved a goal here tonight. Your 7:31 post is right up there with steely and bluesy.

Everyone who has a different opinion than you is now a moron. But your over the top, grade 3 comment about 'smoke signals' is neither funny nor showing any depth of thought or character. It is stereotyping to the nth. degree. It puts all white people in your category, just like you just put all Native people in their category. You are no better than they, my friend, and your bigotry is a mere scratch below the surface.
BIG BROTHER 1/7/2013 8:36:04 PM Report

Further, your comment makes me embarrassed to be a white man.

That's Mr. Steely to you chump.

Big Brother, get a sense of humour, or a life or simply run along and be embarassed, it's your call. That said please do it quietly. Not that I owe you anything but a good fried (First Nation) called me this evening and he was embarassed over Chief Spence. Now he had a reason while you sir are being an ass.

Aha!
I just got my e-mail back with the help of my new best friend in Calgary at Shaw.
Young lady from Pakistan originally and young enough to be my granddaughter.
Polite enough to not call me a dumb old fart.
Rats - I forgot to ask her if she knew Stephen Harper. Probably too polite to admit it.
One problem solved. Now if I can just find where I left that box of Depends I can get ready for bed.

More of the same bullshit grump. No, I won't go away, either quietly or loudly. Your childish rant is only outdone by your childish defense. I find your statement very offensive to a group of people who have suffered enough at the hands of ignorance. Your perpetuating the stereotype does little to solve the issue, but much to inflame it.

Your native friend has a right to be embarrassed by Spence. It is his prerogative, just as it is mine to be embarrassed by your comments. If you are unable to understand what I'm saying, I can understand why you have little empathy for the plight of the Native people. Ignorance is bliss!

Big Brother: I think your being a little hard on Grump. Yes, he's a little politically non-correct and perhaps not too sensitive. But the natives are demanding that we stick to the treaties and recalling the past and all Grump did is recall a little of their past,too. I didn't find it insulting and it was a joke at flyhawk 25.
I don't think that if I was a native I would be offended at Grumps' humor.
Jack Ford 1/7/2013 11:10:28 PM Report

There are currently 2100 people in SSM utilizing the Ontario Works Program.This number is a conservative estimate based on a recent report.The 2100 receive payments being made at an average cost of 900 dollars per month.

900 per month x 12 months = 10800
10800 x 2100 = 22 680 000 per year
These families for the most part are having a very tough time making ends meet!

If you spread that out over the 6 years that the Attawapiskat Audit covered that would add up to 136 080 000.oo.

The 104 000 000 broken down the same way:
104 ,million / 6 years / 1549 band members / 12 months

=
932 dollars per month per band member.

For the record I do not agree with Chief Spence....and I see her tactics as nothing more than fraud in theatrical garb. And her and her "CAO" make a little more than 270 000.oo per year tax free.....

But I think the social issues are everywhere and that our own back yard could use a good clean up before we peek over the fence......

Jack

P.S. It is hard not to look over the fence when your "neighbor" is blocking the gate to your own yard with their new car in an effort to get you to agree with how difficult his or her life is.....

I was totally appalled to hear that Chief Spence was given 104 million dollars for housing, education, and infrastructure in her community of 1800 people and that this money disappeared with no accountability.
She earns 72,000 annually and her commonlaw husband earns over $800.00 a DAY as a consultant. I would be very interested to see his creditentials as an actual consultant. How convenient - Spence's "COMMONLAW HUSBAND" bringing in this astronomical amount of taxpayers' money for Spence and himself to spend!
I hope that the Harper Government sues and lays charges to these individuals for mismanagement and theft of our hardworking money. These people are CRIMINALS!
Also, stop feeding Spence a liquid diet!
If she is on a so called "hunger strike", she should go hungry and be given nothing to eat. She does not deserve to live.
This Idle No More movement is a complete JOKE. The more we give, the more they want. I, as a taxpayer am sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck and our government giving to First Nations people who get free education, have a green card not paying provincial sales taxes and living tax free on land while our property taxes have been skyrocketing.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
gcubed 1/8/2013 12:13:04 AM Report

Jack Ford's numbers are correct, but he is not taking into consideration that the 1549 is the Total population, which includes every man, woman, and child. I understand that there are 300 homes in the community so, looking at it in another way, it means that, on average, each home is receiving about five of those monthly amounts, for a total of about $4,600.00 per month. This does not take into consideration the salaries of people who work at the diamond mine, or the millions in contracts to band members etc. The 104 million is only what the federal government poured in.
