Native Protest - Idle No More

Saturday, January 05, 2013   by: Mac Headrick

One of my New Year resolutions is to better inform myself about native issues in Canada. A combination of events; the Idle No More movement; Bill C-45; the hunger strike of Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence etc., have provided the inspiration. For many years I have avoided thinking about the plight of our native people. When the subject came up in the media I would change the television channel, not read the newspaper or switch to another station on the radio.

It is not because by nature I am not a compassionate individual. It bothered me greatly that in a country such as Canada we have citizens living without adequate housing, clean water, poor nutrition and the list goes on. Now Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are the present focal point of ongoing native protests. It hasn’t escaped my attention that the Liberal Party were in charge for the majority of the last 50 years in Ottawa. Instead of addressing native issues the powers to be have followed the following process; funnel money to the native politicians; react to crisis situations by again allotting some cash. Complicit in this arrangement have been the native political establishment. In addition to the above instead of meaningful negotiations all sides seem to invest in paying lawyers to fight it out in the various courts.

My point is that although I certainly sympathize with the plight of Canada’s aboriginal population, I had given up hope for any solution. By chance I happened to observe an interview on television with a young native man about the Idle No More movement. For some reason I didn’t change the channel. He spoke of Bill C-45 which, by coincidence, is a piece of legislation that has bothered me. I hadn’t considered Bill C-45 in terms of native issues until then. I appreciated this young man’s perspective and sincerity. Perhaps his passion reminded me of my quest for change in the late 60’s, early 70’s. Whatever the case I decided to put away my cynicism and become re-engaged.

I stated above that I have a concern about Bill C-45. I have observed the following situation on this site and others many times. Someone will make a negative remark about native protests. There will be a response from another subscriber asking the first individual if they have ever read Bill C-45. While Bill C-45 is approximately 457 pages long, I very much doubt that anyone pro or negative native protests have ever read this bill. No disrespect to Sault Ste Marie’s Member of Parliament Bryan Hayes intended. I would be extremely surprised if Mr. Hayes had more than a very brief idea what this bill contains. Think about it… 457 pages of financial and legal information. What I do not like about this bill, per say, is that I believe it is so large as to discourage democratic participation. It is all about control which has been Stephen Harpers method of operation. I am thankful that native protests have at least inspired some dialogue on Bill C-45.

I believe some of the Idle No More protests are sporadic and it is a grass roots movement. I haven’t read the following anywhere else. Has it occurred to any media that if the Idle No More movement is successful the major conflict may not only be with the Conservative government in Ottawa? What about the established native leadership? Many supporters of Stephen Harper’s approach to relations with native groups state that many reserves are poorly managed. I am sure on some reserves there is dissent between the residents there and their own chiefs. For the sake of argument, even if this is true there still has to be discussions held between native leaders and government representatives. Harper’s approach has been, up to now, to arbitrarily make decisions that affect native lands and treaty rights.

The following is not a criticism on the Idle No More movement. The organizers claim that their purpose is to inform Canadians about native issues and how it affects non-natives. I do not disagree. Shouldn’t the protests at some point be held in Ottawa and/or Toronto? There was a protest walk down Great Northern Road to David Orazietti office. I personally do not mind protest walks. I participated in many as a young man. I checked all the major newspapers in Toronto and Ottawa when traffic was delayed on the highway through Garden River for 12 hours recently. There wasn’t a mention of the event.

Is there any hope for remote native reserves? I wonder about this. I have been reading about the Attawapiskat, more specifically the opinions of the residents there. I found it interesting that even though living conditions and employment opportunities are so poor, residents there are afraid to leave. Forget about the financial costs. Spend a billion dollars, two billion whatever it takes to provide good housing, clean water etc in Attawapiskat. You will still have a reserve with what… a 70% unemployment rate. A native man once said the quickest way to kill (the spirit) of a man was to pay him to do nothing. I do not have an answer. We always discuss remote reserves in terms of dollars. What about the human costs? Is it possible to create economic opportunity in remote reserves and give the residents who live there purpose?

Finally I don’t see many news articles celebrating the success stories on reserves. These are important in two ways. They provide hope. Secondly they provide a blueprint for success.

As I see it in the past I avoided native issues because the politics involved by all sides didn’t address the needs of the individuals concerned. The Idle No More movement and the connection to Bill C-45 eliminated my apathy.

Well said Mac. The Native issues are very complex and can't be rendered down to a few sound bytes or one line, one size fits all solutions. The 'Idle No More' protest and Spence's hunger strike have brought attention and discussion to the front burner. I believe the Omnibus Bill, C-145, has plenty of fodder for all Canadians to be in an uproar over. We should be thankful to the Native Community for drawing attention to the Bill and we should be hoping they are successful in stopping such overwhelming legislation.

nice story mac.
I noticed you remembered that the liberals
were the party in power for most of the 50 years prior. Did you also remember that in the short time Paul martin was prime minister he sign the national
accord with the first nations only to be defeated by Mr. Harper thus the end of meaningful dialogue and any actions.

Mac, I have often said and will continue to say it and that is that most politicians probably begin their career with all kinds of good intentions and at some point, many of their nice plans fall by the way side. Many of them begin to take on other qualities to describe their personality like self-serving, arrogant, greedy and " I'll get re-elected at any cost and to hell with the electorate ". After all, there's a nice fat pension (pot of gold) waiting for me at the end of the rainbow.

This Country has been extremely generous to special interest groups that represent the minority but squeak the loudest and thus, have been having their way for much too long. This, I know, has cost Canadain Taxpayers millions and millions of dollars, now and into the future.

It is time that this Conservative majority government and our Liberal provincial government begin to listen to the average, middle class, hard working, tax paying Canadians. It's time that government begins to work for the interests of these Canadians who pay 70-80% of the taxes and stop catering to the 15-20% who demand that they get what they want and if not, they can and will rebel because, after all, they're entitled and deserve everything they demand.

Maybe, just maybe, it's now time that the average, middle class Canadian remain "IDLE NO MORE".
Because, I believe, if the average, middle class Canadian weren't there to pay the (tax) bills, this Country would be nothing more than a 3rd world nation. And, if this Country didn't have these average, middle class Canadians carrying the vast load, there would be no opportunity to "spread the wealth" to those that sit around and continually have their hand out.

This, of course, is just my opinion. But I have a feeling that it might be shared by a lot of you out there, though, of course, you may want to be politically correct and not come out and actually admit it.

any GROUP..ICLUDING THE NATIVES...who prevent me from moving freely in our so called free country will NEVER get my support. If I and a group of my friends were to stage a PEACEFUL protest by blocking Queen Street ,,,I venture to say we would be arrested. WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD HERE?
fatafr 1/7/2013 11:57:40 AM Report

The accountants just finished their audit for spence's reserve and there are millions of taxpayer dollars missing with NO ACCOUNTABILITY !!!!!!!!
This is OUTRAGEOUS !!!!!!!!!!!
Mayor Fontana misplaced about $21,000
federal dollars and he is up for 4 charges and is going to court. This is good but what about spence. If what is in the news is true, she should end up in jail and throw away the key.
I don't think this is an over reaction here. This spence is a real piece of work and I seriously hope that our federal government is going to deal with this alleged criminal behavior as they would if it were a non native carrying out these outragious acts.
Mr. Poster 1/7/2013 12:33:22 PM Report

Very few people will be surpsrised by this. Does Harper and his croonies have the gonads to deal with it ? I doubt it. The Liberals never bothered either.
maryanne 1/7/2013 11:45:25 PM Report

I was totally appalled to hear that Chief Spence was given 104 million dollars for housing, education, and infrastructure in her community of 1800 people and that this money disappeared with no accountability.
She earns 72,000 annually and her commonlaw husband earns over $800.00 a DAY as a consultant. I would be very interested to see his creditentials as an actual consultant. How convenient - Spence's "COMMONLAW HUSBAND" bringing in this astronomical amount of taxpayers' money for Spence and himself to spend!
I hope that the Harper Government sues and lays charges to these individuals for mismanagement and theft of our hardworking money. These people are CRIMINALS!
Also, stop feeding Spence a liquid diet!
If she is on a so called "hunger strike", she should go hungry and be given nothing to eat. She does not deserve to live.
This Idle No More movement is a complete JOKE. The more we give, the more they want. I, as a taxpayer am sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck and our government giving to First Nations people who get free education, have a green card not paying provincial sales taxes and living tax free on land while our property taxes have been skyrocketing.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
Javaman 1/8/2013 8:43:27 AM Report

maryanne...many folks will agree with you. As a taxpayer we are required by law to report all earnings....file a tax return...pay additional taxes owing in some case. Why are natives not under the same scutiny if they are truly "with us" in Canada? What is Spences husband "consulting? on a daily basis?..her weight? her ego? RIDICULOUS.
The problem is..what to do about it without being accused of being racist.
KENNEDY919 1/8/2013 9:06:31 AM Report

There is something seriously wrong with the underlying values of our Canadian principles when the mayor of Toronto loses his job over $3,150.00 donated to his football foundation without a declared conflict of interest while Chief Spence is heralded as an inspiration when 104 million dollars of taxpayers money is unaccounted for.

The true scandal of First Nations' funding -- not the Deloitte and Touche version!

The argument in the case of Attawapiskat should not be with the government, the focus should be on Spence, and the previous band council. I have a First Nations back ground. In other words, I have an opinion, not a racist comment.

Income tax time is coming. Wish they were lower? I have a plan. Stick with me on this,

Most people in Canada get a small refund when they file their taxes each spring. It's sort of a pleasant experience when the refund arrives. Of course what this really means is that the government has taken too much off and has collected interest on your money that should be in your pocket. Nice system, they take your money early and a little too much. If they raise your taxes they takeoff a little extra to ensure you will still get the refund of your own money. They've tricked you into feeling grateful as they nick you for more and more.

The solution? Simple, drastic but simple : Stop all income tax deductions from paychecks.

Imagine what would happen each March when we all did our income tax and had to come up with the thousands of dollars each of us would owe. There would be such an uproar about the amount of money the government takes from us. Accountability would be demanded and if the taxes were not lowered we would tar and feather every politician we could get our hands on.

Will this happen? Not bloody likely, but I can dream.
