Boehner is a jerk. Pure and simple.

John Boehner is the poster boy for country club politics.
Christie in the other hand would be my current choice to be the next president. He is a fiscal conservative, pragmatic and recognizes bullshit from a mile away.

Thanks Ace of Bass, very interesting, also quite interesting that some here pick and chose when a treaty is no longer valid " stating "no King so not valid" .. By that thinking one could state that there was no Prime Minister or Canada when other treaties signed so then void.

No wonder treaties cannot be taken at face value, they are so vague and un comparable to todays world. There will never be consensus with in the multitude bands and reservations in Canada. (600 all wanting to be nations)

Good morning sweet Soo! I'm thinking this theatrical presentation by congress may be the best thing that has happened to the Republicans. The two gentlemen who stood up and refused to sing the party song will be their salvation. There are some very valuable lessons here that I doubt canadian politicians will profit from. The biggest of course is if you see the party song does not represent the people who sent you there STOP singing it, your constituents aren't stupid. Example our own Mr. Orazoonie who has been passed over twice for promotion by Dalton still aligns himself with his master! Example the Federal Liberals needed a new leader so they pick the most unlikely candidate to connect with the people then all jump on the teflon ramp down too extinction with no one having the balls to say we picked the wrong guy. Instead they tried to sell the people a pig in a poke and they were not buying it. Dave I haven't given up trying to shame you into growing some balls. The alternative scares the crap out of me. He has a wind up key in his back and I'm not sure who safe guards it.

Ace... not sure where you got that "excerpt," but the copy of the Huron Robinson Treaty I am reading says:

"THIS AGREEMENT, made and entered into this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty, at Sault Ste. Marie, in the Province of Canada, between the Honorable WILLIAM BENJAMIN ROBINSON, of the one part, on behalf of HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN, and..."

The Treaty was signed during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Grace... It wouldn't matter whether or not there is a King or Queen, either is the Sovereign, and any document that refers to one also refer to the other.

The treaties are not "outdated."

If your great-great-great grandfather bought a piece of property, and the deed was handed down through the generations to you, it would not be "outdated" -- it would still be valid, and you could claim ownership of that property.

Legal documents do not expire.

Ace... those treaties are more complicated than you seem to be suggesting.

On the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development website you will find the full text of the treaties, as well as accepted interpretations of them.

The treaties are a basic fundamental knowledge of Canada?
It certainly is not with the majority of its citizens.
The truth of the history of the treaties and First Nations Peoples, their treatment under past and present government, is not taught to our "citizens" in the schools and it should have been from an early age.
This is a major problem with understanding the disputes, a complete lack of knowledge and truth.

As I suspected right wing now offers a weak defense of Boehner by saying there is enough blame to go around.
That seems to imply that the Speaker of the House didn't drop the ball.
We'll see about that as this plays out.
Certainly the GOP don't have the rigid party line all to themselves.
But what I find interesting is that Boehner got side-stepped by the Republican leaders.
The President did not suffer the same fate with the Dems.
When a guy like Christie calls you out the GOP listen.
But rw will keep defending the neo-con nuts right up to the point when the Tea Party is just a stain on the house floor.
Then he'll say the Dems have nuts too.
They do. Get over it.
But this president made the call and came through. That's called leadership.
Boehner caved to the loopy quasi-power-brokers. That's called lack of leadership.

Sam C

The First Nation Treaties of the 1800s are greatly outdated. The economy of the 1000 reserves in the 1800s revolved around Hunting,Fishing and Fur trading. These economies no longer exist. Many of these 1000 reserves have no economic activity within 100 miles of their reserve yet they continue to be maintained.
The costs of Healthcare, education,Social welfare, construction, road maintenance, police services and water/sewer infrastructure have gone up a little bit since the 1800s. All these services are duplicated on an administrative level for every one of the 1000 reserves throughout Canada. The Department of Indian Affairs serves as an administrative duplication of all regular government services. These administrative costs are mind boggling.
Accountability for the disbursement of funds to these reserves are poor at best.
The high priced Chief on her Hunger strike did not do her job when her reserve members used the wood from their homes to burn as firewood when there was a forest 20 feet away of available firewood. When the construction of the homes were compromised and the homes not properly heated mould set in as reserve members spent their monies on other things other than oil for their furnace. So Ottawa and the taxpayer have to replace these homes due to mould. In 200 years this reserve has not developed skilled tradesmen to deal with the everyday maintenance of a remote nation. When things go wrong it is Ottawa's fault and that of Stephen Harper.
The Public Sector Fiscal mess we are now in can not be properly dealt with until the people rise up and demand to throw political correctness out the window and deal with the insanity of current public sector spending.
BIG BROTHER 1/3/2013 12:33:02 PM Report

Kenedy,
The public sector fiscal mess has been with us for as long as I can remember. It is a political tool, used by various governments, to help sell their particular programs. The treaties were written in terms that the average Canadian, at the time, could barely read, let alone understand. How could we/they expect the Natives to understand them when most natives couldn't read or write English. They (the treaties) have not been re-written nor followed, according to the way they were supposed to be. Now that the Natives are demanding consultation when the treaties are being altered, they are being treated like criminals for asking what they were entitled to from the beginning, yet have been denied from that same beginning.

This is not just Harper, but a succession of government's responsibilities being neglect. Of course the Natives are indignant about opening their books for public scrutiny. The money is theirs to do with what they decide. We may not like it, but think about the many things they may not like and yet, can't have addressed.

“(Spence’s) message is that the chiefs must and will redeem themselves despite an imperfect past; the time has come for the leaders of our nations to become one and the same as the people,” reads the letter from Angela Bercier.

“The chiefs have made mistakes in the past, but don’t shame them for these. They are, after all, our people. The chiefs are ready now to humble themselves for the people.”

http://tinyurl.com/a8zjbzv

Shame/blame the government instead and use non native people as pawns, after all they are not their people. So, government is suppose to pay for their mistakes? I don't know about that. When I've made mistakes in my life, I pay for them. I live with the consequences and I make changes if I choose to do so. Sure my history, where I had no control, may have something to do with the mistakes I've made but the bottom line is, it's my choice to either repeat or learn from my mistakes. Why give special treatment to the FN for their mistakes.

Let go of the past and move forward but stop trying to take, take, take from others. That won't fix things...the fixing needs to be done in the mind first.

Although I'm tired of the bs, the longer it goes on, the more truth that comes out. It seems that chiefs are to blame for the plight of their own reservations...not the government.

Why can't we all just be ONE nation.

PP,
The behavior of the Native people is learned behavior. The elders in their society are the 'one's' who were the product of the Residential Schools. They have not truly learned the traditional ways and have not learned the mainstream ways or white ways. Their's is a tragic story...a nightmare we should all be thankful we didn't have to live it. We (our government) pushed them on to reserves, separated them from mainstream society and expected that we 'done good'. Throw some money at them and forget about them. That has been the so-called cure.

Personally, I think projects like the James Bay/Labrador power projects should be dedicated to the Native people. Profits, after expenses, including maintenance, should be directed back to the Natives...100%. That is the land that sustained them for a couple of thousand years. It should still be sustaining them.

Instead, we give them a million dollars, knowing this will fail, then demand that they open their books for public scrutiny. Feed the propagandists more ammunition and sneak through more legislation aimed at stripping more rights away from them. The million dollars is a pittance, compared to what we owe them.

Do you remember training schools for example. I believe the only way is to move forward and leave the negative things of the past behind. I understand about wanting to hang onto culture and that can be done. I don't believe reserves were or are the solution. They bring about isolation and division.

PP,
Well said. Reserves were/are not the answer, but they weren't the Natives idea in the first place either. None of any of this was their idea. They have merely been spectators at the ritualistic signing of these documents. Then followed what they were told to do.

Yes, we have all felt the wrath of bad government policies. We were also given or taught the tools to fight back or use the system to our advantage.

Yes, the treaties are outdated, but they are the only documents left to work with and our past and present governments haven't lived up to the spirit of them. Why would the Natives want to give those up, with no other consideration.

I believe the 'hunger strike' is having it's desired effect. People are paying attention and the discussions are happening. It worked for Mandella, Ghandi and MLK...non-violent protest!! Bring attention to your cause.

I worked with a fellow who was taken away from his parents at age FOUR! This happened (as well as worse things in the Residential schools) to a GENERATION. Ask yourself how you would do (and your parents and other family members) if this happened to you. Pink Peony 1/3/2013 7:43:05 PM Report

I think the other things that need to be considered, to be realistic, are population increase and the advent of industrialization since those treaties were signed. I doubt that either side could have begun to imagine both of those things to the extent that they have become. With the increase in population, more people needed the resources available. With industrialization, all resources and all land has been affected. I guess that's where the protests regarding parts of C-45 come in. In the bigger picture though, we have a lot of people to accommodate. We need to establish and or maintain relationships with other parts of the world, have allies.

The protests are stirring up anger, resentment, hatred too. Not good. They may be peaceful protests but for many of those inconvenienced (in my mind, used as pawns), it isn't leaving much of a peaceful feeling.

What inconvenience?

15 minutes stuck in traffic or 200 years of oppression?
The natives have been handed the short end of the stick from the get go.
This situation will never be solved...ever!
We've created a culture of dependency.
The treaties that were drawn and signed are redundant as they do not work for either side and times and circumstances have changed.
Leases and contracts have an expiry date and on that date things need to be renegotiated.
The native people never invited us . We crashed the party and then some.
But it is what it is...and I am not going to pack my bag and move back to Europe. I contributed and my kids will contribute to what we call Canada.
We are in this boat together whether we like it or not and unless we learn to co-operate this crap will continue forever.
The living conditions in Attawapiskat are untenable and pumping money into it is not going to solve anything.
We seem more preoccupied with million dollar contracts for Hockey players than the fate of kids living in abject conditions with but a scant hope of a better life.
We have designed a nation of "us" and "thems" and both sides are more or less responsible for that and yet we seem upset at the results.

I think this is where a lot of confusion is coming in.. When all these treaties were signed most First Nations people were Hunter/gatherers and they were not concerned with the advent of the immigration policies of the time, nor the industrialization either. Fast forward to the present time and there are very few First Nations people who fit the bill as Hunter/gatherers anymore. Most use the motor vehicle for transportation, Metro, AP or No Frills for groceries, PUC or Gt Lakes for water and Energy, yet they want to be treated and acknowledged as different according to a treaty signed 150 years ago, which did not envision a world like we have today. I have not seen one First Nation person come on here and say which of their rights under the Treaties is being renaged on, I have not seen any specific reason for all the "protests". A Band Chief does not want to disclose the Salary she gets and how many of her relatives have their fingers in the cooker jar, thats between her and the paymaster, not me or the rest of Canada. You want my supprt, fine, but be honest and specific in what it is you feel is wrong, but just remember this was the Lady was given a dozen quarter million dollar homes just last year...

On another note...

The numbers from the holiday RIDE programs have just come in, seems that people are just not getting the message, prehaps it should go to Zero tolerance as the idea thats its O K to have a couple appears to be the normal.. Prehaps the law should be changed that if you are found driving with alcohol in the body you are immediately banned from driving for say 3 months and the vehicle impounded for that length of time too along with any other licences you may have. Second time the vehicle is forfeit and a lifetime ban. The present set up certainly doesn't seem to be working...

Status...

We seem pretty much agreed that the world has changed since the treaties were signed. But what is the answer to the F N peoples problems. Scrap the Indian Act, okay, but what then, do we call in the tribes, the Cree,Ojibway however many there are and say what? here is so much land, money, now go on your way? This is a situation that can never be solved in a satisfactory way to everyone... I do not know how much you keep up with situations in Europe, but at the moment it looks like Belgium could separate into the Walllons and Flems..

Mallet,

There are folks on the road that should be banned from driving even if they are sober!
I consumed two beers in five hours on New years eve and I drove home.
I was stopped at the old hospital and was asked if I had anything to drink and I told them exactly what I had...they made me blow.....they told me to have a nice night.

Mallet,
Belgians are a horrible people....sprouts and waffels and the occasional foray into the Congo.
Never much cared for them.
(smiley face)
They never settled on being French or Dutch.

"....they made me blow..."

How many officers before they let you go without a ticket?

Congratulations to the City for opening up Pine Street to 2nd Line! Makes it almost impossible to make left hand turns onto Pine from Tilley, Willoughby, Pleasant, Food Basics etc. Driving traffic back onto Great Northern. Brilliant!

Have a plan here. Sence Quebec and First Nations seem to want the samething, all the money they can getfrom Canada and answer to no one.. I say give Quebec to the natives. They can all live together and the rest of Canada can be happy for ever after.
Wicket 1/3/2013 11:12:15 PM Report

Oh wisen..... give it a rest, learn to deal with it, being patient and waiting for a break in traffic to turn. Those of us living on streets that feed onto Queen or Wellington, have been doing this foreverrrrrrrr.....
So sick of all the negativity posted on here, didn't realize how many sad, unhappy, bitter, complaining people actually lived in a free country. Go and volunteer somewhere so that you will learn to appreciate what you have.
