Good morning Sweet Soo! Morn Bounder my son. Someone mentioned last week about the proliferation of charitable hands out that was becoming a turn off. My answer and it's taken 65 years to thicken the skin. "Thank you for asking but I've already donated my quota to the charity of my choice." I believe I'm being respectful to the person but above all I am being respectful to myself. Took me years to overcome my catlick guilt and the mistaken belief that you can earn future merit in the afterlife which was a big fundraising scheme of the Vatican for centuries.

Funny, uplifting christmasy stories.

My dear friend Paul who after the passing of his wife retired and fulfilled the dream of every Cape Bretoner and moved back home. Paul's dear wife was bound to a wheel chair with MS. Now I've set up the story.
It was Paul's habit to take his beloved out to a restaurant for Christmas dinner since his daughter was all grown and out of province. I wish I could mimic his thick east coaster accent. Anyway he and the misses are driving around and happened to stop at North 82. The place was packed and there was no menu but you got a big platter with all the trimmings. The company was boisterous and cheerful just like down home. The quandary arose when Paul asked for the cheque only to be told the meal was free. Now I've heard this story more than once from Paul and each time his face would redden as he described trying to pay for the meal and realizing the significance of the event. Truth be told Paul was a vey well paid steelworker and was embarrassed by his circumstances. He did finally find one of the event organizers and was able to make a donation. And you say there's no Santa. Paul wherever you are on the east coast may your christmas be less painful sourrounded by your family of origin.

Good morning everyone. Spelly you are going to have to watch that PROFANE stuff or you will surely go to hell. I watched Peter Mansbridge on his year end wrap up of Canadian Politics. He and his guests all agreed that Peter McKay would not be Defence Minister next year. They further said that the average Canadian didn't seem to be upset with the Harper gov't not meeting a fiscal target yet and piling up the debt. They agreed that Conservatives were certainly upset with this. Just about the time I was almost convinced by rw and the posse that I was a lefty, I find out I'm a Conservative. That sure leaves me wondering just what they are. LMAO and have a great day all.
RLE 12/14/2012 7:21:23 AM Report

Skipper Dave: Great story. Unfortunately it appears that this event may not happen this year as the organizers can't find anyone to bring those in need of a ride to North 82. This information is from a Sault Star article published a couple of days ago.

Pink Peony 12/14/2012 9:41:12 AM Report

For quite a few months there has been a male grackle hanging around my property. He couldn't fly. He would hop up branches of my trees that would get him to the safety of the fullness of a balsam fir. That's where he would sleep and hang out a lot once the snow flew. He had a loyal female that would behave just as he did. Although she could fly, she wouldn't. Instead she hopped around the ground, up and down the branches just like her mate. She was much more nervous than he was.

I fed them every day. They would wait for me to go outside. Once I stepped outside onto my deck, I looked over towards the fir tree and they would be making their way down the branches. I would toss peanuts and they ate them. Sometimes I wouldn't get outside until a little later in the morning. The male grackle would be sitting on a branch low to the ground waiting for me. Once he saw me, he would stretch and look at me. Yes, I talked to him...."hello golden eyes". When there was no snow, he would hop towards my deck, stop and look at me. He came as close as he could while still maintaining a safe distance that gave him enough space to escape if needed. Although a wild bird, he became dependent on me. I cherished every day because I had that to look forward to. It made me smile and felt good to know that I was helping him to survive. Although sad about the fact he couldn't fly and I knew it was a matter of time before he met his fate, he gave me great joy every day. There were times when he would be at the back of my yard, going through the garden. When I came outside, he would run towards the deck and look at me, waiting for the peanut.

Three days ago, I went out and saw him and the misses in the fir tree. I went over to place peanuts on the top of the fence. I could see both of them. Then all of a sudden, a crow went in and snatched the male. The crow took him to the next tree and started to tear into his gut! :(:(:( Oh my God!!!! Not something I needed to witness!!!

The female was safe. She wasn't vulnerable like he was...she could fly! She remained in the fir tree for about the next 24 hours. She was talking a lot. I placed peanuts on the fence but she wouldn't take them. About 24 hours after my precious little grackle met his fate, his loyal mate flew away and I haven't seen her since.

I hate crows right now!! It's all about survival and if other creatures have a weakness, are vulnerable, it's just a matter of time before they become victim.

It was extremely painful/sad to watch my sweet little golden eyes meet his fate.

Awww, Pink Peony, sad end to your story. I have never liked crows, we had a huge flock of them living in the evergreens in the neighbourhood for about 3 years and then they moved on. While they were around here, there were no songbirds at all. My sister-in-law is from Alberta and when she came to the Soo, she was shocked that we weren't allowed to kill them as they eat the crops out west and can be killed.

Wicket, I've marked my calendar.

I've always liked crows (although at the moment I hate them) because they are smart, they're real survivors. But to watch them in action is hard. With this latest incident, it was so much more difficult to see because a bond had been formed between myself and that crow's prey.

The obsessed Harper-haters don't get it, rw (or just refuse to acknowledge the truth, lest it gets in the way of a good anti-Harper, anti-conservative rant).
The lefties will rant and rave about corporate profits and capitalism being evil; and often in the same breath demand that "the government" guarantee them a good pension.
They don't get that "government" and all pensions, are dependent on those big evil corporations making profits and capitalism. They don't get that the very foundation of all pensions and social programs is business and capitalism. In fact, the profits they make, the better and more sustainable a person's pension can be.

Canada's economic success is seen as a failure in their eyes, they want bad reports so they can finger point and do their "I told you so".
How sad for them.
Big Bro showed us that with his bank retort to a report of good news.
What he did not add was what this downgrade really means, basically nothing, except an increase for those investing in these institutions.

"The firm lowered its ratings by one notch on Scotiabank to A-plus. National Bank of Canada, Laurentian Bank of Canada, Central 1 Credit Union , Caisse centrale Desjardins and Home Capital Group were also lowered one notch.

The outlooks for all six financial institutions are stable."

Wait until the deficit starts to get under control and decline and the lefties can't bitch about that anymore.
They'll always find something.

Do you as a taxpaying Saultite feel that the PUC is responding to the smell/taste complaints about the city's water in a timely and "successful" manner?

O YES
O NO

OR

Have the continuing and most recent traffic blockades/disruptions by FN groups made you more sympathetic to their cause of complaint?

O Absolutely yes
O Somewhat
O No effect
O Not really
O Absolutely not

To the STPTB feel free to amend either (lame it down as usual) ...

OR

Ignore totally and post some meaningful Poll ... as in:

That was my point,rw. The intent was the same but the means by which to carry out attacks is so much easier in the U.S. I am not about to get into an acrimonious argument as I am, like most, including you, dumbfounded by the mindset that can carry out such evil. Suffice it to say that the gun-mentality that permeates the U.S. is a real cause for concern. You cannot legislate against mental illness or utter malevolence, but you can take measures to make it less likely to happen.

This type of tragedy has happened world wide in countries with the strictest gun laws.
Your on the wrong track if you think strict gun laws will make this disappear.
You ever hear the statement "locks only keep out honest people"....

...and thanks for sparing me fly, over the sadness.

rw,

"This type of tragedy has happened world wide in countries with the strictest gun laws."

Sure it has. Many "different" instances in many "different" countries under "different" circumstances. But in those countries it remains an aberration! (google "abearration"). The U.S stands alone in repeated, almost predictable instances over and over and over again.

In all honesty rw , I don't know why I even bother with you....I know you're not stupid but please ...return the favour .....

The real fear now is that someone will try to "copy" this tragedy. Even our schools/malls/hospitals etc. need to be on high alert and much more vigilant. Not just looking for a nutcase walking the halls with a gun.. but the people in the school(malls, hospital.. whatever) who may have problems that need to be addressed before they turn into a massacre.. employees or students with an odd attitude or a huge chip on their shoulder. I think all the publicity that these events generate feed the people with purpose to share in the "glory".. it's scarey.
This makes me want to hold all who I love and hold dear, close to me .

Give me one...ONE valid reason to own a fully automatic assault weapon......and I will give you a reason why I should be legally allowed to cook Meth for the purpose of fertilizing my garden....

Jesus H. Christ! You're either dense or demented!

Before guns are sold there should be a 90 day waiting period to ensure those who purchase such guns are of a sound mind and that their background checks. This includes 4 references and that each reference is checked. Being pro-active instead of what occurred today may save many lives and deters others from potential disasters.
