Has there been a power failure in the area? No ducks, snide comments, world shattering insights to everything, personal attacks, or rehashing of archived comments. Time to get out there and brush the vehicle off. Everyone take a deep breath, relax, think(if possible) before you type and have a good day.

I'd have to agree with you.
Talking politics is like making mashed potatoes, the more you mix the fluffier they get, tastless and full of air!

Regarding your digging in the archives yesterday.
Did you break out in a sweat with all that digging...and you had to go back two years to find that "jewel".
I'm using flyhawk's demented reasoning on that one.
Public figures are fair targets.
Flyhawk also states it is O.K. to insult as long as you are doing it in a general sort of way ...although I'd like to see him try that in any of the minority neighborhoods in his old home town of Chicago.
The hawk would look like road kill in less than three minutes.

Today is lunch day for some of you.
I hope that all of you are "skinny" cause if flyhawk25 shows up you know what he is going to be thinking of a general sort of way.

Enjoy your lunch and don't order any poutine......

Why are we waiting at the stop lights and no one is coming?
Yesterday I witnessed more than one car/truck take off through the parking lot of that new intersection by Wellington Square. WOW! One small SUV even drove up the side walk after coming out of Community First! A little bit of patience is all you need while driving. But at this intersection there is a well travelled road through that guys property.
Now that our city has growen there should be turning lanes at ALL intersections.

Not much posting today... everyone must have looked out the window and gone back to bed except for a few brave souls..Hardly any news worth mentioning these days, unless you think of all those jobs that went to Bangladesh for the people there to work in conditions that here would not be tolerated by anyone. Seems a lot of well known brands will be in short supply for a while until they have cleared the factory that burned and killed more than a hundred has been replaced by another sweatshop.. But who cares, as long as they can buy their underpants for a couple of bucks and there are profits to be made...

Well it did not take long for our local crap disturber to check back in.
Since he is an expert on Goggle I'll offer this thought.
He makes reference to my old 'hood' in Chicago.
Check out the parish of my baptism - St. Felicitas parish at 84th and Blackstone.
Then go to the sidebar for a neighbor's walk through the neighborhood. Finally - check out the attached story about the Obama family being there handing out food to the folks in the area.No media, no fuss, just someone shooting one south Chicago family who sought out neighbors in need.Teaching their girls to give back. But yeah. There were Secret Service folks there and it would be portrayed by rw as a waste of federal funds.

TRAFFIC FLOW could be enhanced in this city.Extending Sackville Road to Third Line should be a priority. NORTH Street COULD have been extended through as well but someone at the city allowed houses to be built that block the end of North Street...dumb.
My complaint is great Northern where you are pretty much guaranteed to hit every red light. Has no one at the city heard of SYNCRONIZING lights????
Pink Peony 11/28/2012 10:05:03 AM Report

I don't understand why the city doesn't install circle intersections. They work well...never need fixing and no electricity!

I just shoveled the end of my driveway. Now I have an earache and a headache. For those folks that don't know it, it's okay to move over towards the other lane when there isn't another vehicle beside you. I swear some people resent those who shovel the end of their driveway. It's as though they move as close as they can to you, to try and hit you. Jerks!!

Great Northern and Second Line traffic light solution

how about rotating the lights so that all traffic going in the same direction gets to go - those turning left and straight through? and it's not too confusing for locals and out of town folk. It works well in Sudbury at the four corner location (Regent and Long Lac/Paris), why not here? oh wait I know why - it makes sense.

Has anyone anything interesting to say about the shingles shot? We're booked for it next week, on the advice of our doctor. It's kind of expensive and I've suggested to my wife that if just I get the shot, we can save money and that by sleeping, etc. with me she'll probably be immune as well.

Shakes...I have had shingles. If you have had chicken pox -herpes simplex - you are a target for it.
It is horrible.
Mine were on my lower rib cage and the scars are still there and the area doesn't even tan in the summer.
Pay the money and get the shot.
I did not even though I got my flu shot. The research is still pretty limited and I am counting on not getting hit again. I have enough rust on my aging body without doing the risk/reward thing with introducing another variable.
There are many myths about the illness and they are just that. It won't kill you but if it gets you around the eye area you'll wish someone would.
Brianne 11/28/2012 5:40:52 PM Report

Shakey, don't you dare get that shot ! Do some research on it !

So, ummmmm, yah, had an interesting couple of days. Worked til 10 pm last night , by the time i got home on the bus it was 11.. straight to bed, as had to be up for 5:15 am to get ready to catch the 6:15 am bus to work.

I get off the bus on the north corner of old garden river and second line, cut across that bike shop parking lot, across Michael's parking lot to get to work.

Thought i'd go that same route this morning, everything was fine until there was a 15 foot wall of snowbank in front of me......... yah....... stood there for a second..... nope, not turning around and going down second line to get to the road..... found the lowest spot on the snowbank, and started to traverse the hill...yup.. til i sank above my knees. Every step took me deeper into the snow. Crap ! I had to crawl on my hands and knees over the snowbank ( or what felt like a mountain). I didn't know whether to laugh or cry........... good thing it was dark out and no one saw me :)

Aside from bruises all over my legs from my adventure, all is good !
Brianne 11/28/2012 5:54:36 PM Report

By attempting to eliminate an essentially harmless childhood disease – chickenpox -- another unnecessary disaster is being created. And Big Pharma is now hard at work, creating vaccines to treat problems caused by vaccines.

That’s exactly what this shingles vaccine is: a vaccine to treat a delayed side effect of the childhood varicella vaccine.

Marc Brisson and his team said their research showed that adults living with children have more exposure to the virus that causes chickenpox, and from that enjoy high levels of protection against shingles.

Being close to children means that adults are exposed to the virus, which acts like a natural booster vaccine against shingles, they believe. But if all children are vaccinated, adults who have had chickenpox are no longer protected against developing shingles.

Fly, in the past you have frequently pleaded for civility on this site, yet you persist in referring to Mr. Ford's weight in an insulting manner. You have quite correctly nailed people who have made racist references about Mr. Obama. Many people, perhaps a majority, in our society, have a weight problem. It appears to have about as much impact on their worth as a person as does skin colour.

Do I detect a whiff of hypocrisy?,
shakespeare 11/28/2012 6:56:37 PM Report

So Brianne, it'll be just our secret, but the details on your bus stop, the store whose snowbank you had to clamber over and the vicinity you were in, suggests that you work for a W type store. Status will not be happy! Say it ain't so! Tell me it's Moores or Future shop or Mark's WW.

It does sound ridiculous that Rob Ford booted out of office by a judge for raising $3150 for charity.

He did not gain from it.The mistake was he thought it was no big deal. His mistake was using city hall stationary.

A Toronto city Councillor took $12,000 taxpayers dollars to throw himself a retirement party nothing happened.

Some believe that this was a leftist thing. It was not. There are individuals out there watching politicians. It does not matter who you are left or right.

You break the rules like Rob Ford did they will come after you.In this case the Individual had the Money to take Mayor Ford to court.

The municipal politicians who break the taxpayers trust. This is a warning these lone wolfs will come after you.

This was a win by the people who pay taxes.

Nanag Ford is a good advertisement for Weight Watchers. Honestly he needs to work on his health and set an example for a city. I know it is not nice or polite or civil to base someone on his weight but he is a role model.
nanag 11/28/2012 7:50:48 PM Report

I wasn't even talking about Ford.. I could care less.. so why direct your comment at me?
flyhawk25 11/28/2012 7:53:52 PM Report

Snobank...fair question.
Obviously I don't like Ford even though I don't know him personally. So rather than call him what I might in a private conversation I pick on one physical characteristic.
I suppose I could call him a weasel but some animal lover would complain.
Jerk is too tame. Crooked politician might leave me open to libel. If I call him a bully it might be better. But that hardly paints the portrait I want of a bellicose one trick pony gasbag who appealed to the most base levels of the electorate - saving money on public services - to get elected.
So I don't just dislike him I dislike the selfish moneyed big city power brokers who don't care about public transit and safety to name two because they can afford cabs and cars and can afford to live downtown and drink five dollar lattes.
If you think that makes me a lefty so what? I am left of center politically but I believe that politicians should serve the needs of all. Not just the rich and powerful.
My reference to Ford's size is part of his package. He made a big issue of losing weight, failed and dismissed it.If he were my relative I'd encourage him to work at getting healthier.
But he is a loud mouthed politician who thinks he's above the rules.
And I hate those types.
However if he were of a different race than me I doubt I'd even bother commenting - unless he made it an issue.
And I am sorry if you took offense.I don't dislike him for his size but for what he is about.

In my view, there is no difference between Mr. Ford and Robert Mugabe. The only difference is that Ford is in Canada and Mr. Mugabe is in other continent. Other than that, their techniques are exactly the same.

Fortunately, we are in Canada and our system is equipped with relief valves.

Mr. Ford is taking a bit of his own medicine, the gravy train. In politics, is not what you do, but how you do it.

In the other hand, what about Montreal, Laval, London?

Unfortunately this is a to often situation.

Bye bye BOBO! (streetworker dixit)

Grump...I am sorry I could not attend. As I explained to you in an e-mail I'd rather keep my private life just that.
The term is Mitt's Morons and it does not need further definition.
It is interesting to note that
President Obama is having Mr. Romney to the White House tomorrow for a private lunch. No press.
I think that is what a graceful winner should do.Mitt is a decent fellow who was defeated in a fair election.
This president has many good qualities. While I was disappointed in his first term performance I never doubted his integrity nor Romney's.
I just get nutty when the bombastic neo-cons get on soap boxes and spout crap.
I don't expect Rush will get an invite to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this term.

Snobank 11/28/2012 8:16:40 PM Report

Fly, you used a lot of words to describe your opinion of Mr. Ford. Most of your words I tend to agree with. You said you were frustrated because you could not think of one word to sum up your feelings. So, you pick an irrelevant physical characteristic to label him and that seems fair to you?

Your plethora of words after the fact does not diminish or excuse what you did. You don't need to apologize to him as I suspect he is not an avid follower of this site, but, you do need to stop used the same tactic on which you call out others.
flyhawk25 11/28/2012 8:23:11 PM Report

BIG BROTHER 11/28/2012 8:52:11 PM Report

I somewhat agree with your sentiments. Name calling is code for 'I just ran out of arguments'.

However, Rob Ford himself mocks his weight. Every comedian in Canada has enjoyed taking a shot at Ford, Mayor of Canada's largest city, for his rotund body style. To compare the 'cracks' about his obesity to bigoted comments about Obama or his wife is a stretch. There is a vast difference

As the Mayor of Canada's largest city, he not only represents Toronto; he represents all Canadians, to some extent. He is in the midst of making a mockery out of Democracy. He is still, today, turning his nose up at the law, claiming he is going nowhere. He is embarrassing all Canadians on the international scene. His antics have become fodder for talk shows. His skin is as thick as his skull. fly is not alone in his frustration with the imbecile. Rational talk is ignored by him (Ford). He is willing to embarrass the whole country to hang onto his kingdom. All over 3 thousand dollars? I don't think so! His sense of entitlement is astounding and if name calling works...good! Logic sure as hell isn't!
shakespeare 11/28/2012 9:01:35 PM Report

I used to direct stress reduction workshops to various agencies and corporations around town, not in terms of the yoga or breathing aspects of things, but more the psychology and philosophy of stress. There are so many things to help one deal with it. Several posters seem to get inordinately involved with things that are so far away from their field of influence and become fanatically involved in things that are, let's say, not too important... a case in point: a group of New Zealanders are totally "hot to trot" about three horses, and some chickens who died during the shooting of "The Hobbit", although they, apparently did not die as part of the filming but on a farm". I mean, who can really get excited about that, when children are dying elsewhere in the world. I cannot get stirred up about the Ford issue! He's a fool! There is no comparison with him and Mugabe.

Perhaps the best and the most cliched response to stress is the following. Although I'm an agnostic, I'm not going to butcher the beautiful words:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

flyhawk25 11/28/2012 9:28:14 PM Report the top of my head -where the point is - my layman's definition would be someone to the right of center politically. Far right.
In my usage I see them as doctrinaire and unwilling to see beyond their beliefs.
In Canada I would include Harper and company,Harris and his group and Ford. It is not limited to them but it is an easy illustration by example.
In the US it would include the Tea Party.
On that right side of the spectrum as you get closer to the center here we get folks like Bill Davis.
In short neo-cons are a group entrenched in a particular view with whom I disagree.
I have no animus towards conservatives. We just agree to disagree but generally believe in being inclusive in governing through compromise.
I believe that extreme beliefs at either end of the spectrum don't last long.

I know them both.
One has a sense of humor. The other has no sense and no humor.
You sort it out.

I think that Everson should concentrate on getting rid of the fat between her ears.

Couple of little news items that may interest a few... Germany is thinking of banning "bestiality", which robs me of one of my favourite jokes. The other was a anticle regarding the "beheading of a 14 year old girl in Afghanistan, because neither she nor her father wanted her to get married". We lost how many men and woman to help liberate these people from a form of government we thought was wrong?? We courts martial men who broke our rules of warfare trying to help these people?? Good God above we stand by and allow this sort of thing and then wonder why our service people suffer from PTSD.. Boy oh boy, how things have changed in my lifetime, some may say for the better, however I have serious boubts about that...

Had a good lunch meeting thanks all... Do again some time..

Tisk, tisk.

I went back to 2010 in the archives and read that line that you took out of context.
Now that I re-read my comment in the full context and remember what I meant by it, I stand by my statement that it was not racist or an insult to the "first lady" in any manner.
Unless comparing ones strength to a gorilla is insulting or racist...I'm sure the lefties will come up with an angle.

I have met flyhawk a total of three times.
Trust me, he knows of me but he does not "know me".

everson 11/28/2012 9:59:06 PM Report

Well Steels the word "tard" is so typical of you and rw. You are what is wrong with society. moronic imbeciles. Yes rw some and a very very very small population Of about 1 percent are fat because of medical reasons the rest is just complacency on their health and we all pay. But go ahead be Steels "lapdog". I rest my case with your moronic idealized world. Wake up.
everson 11/28/2012 10:03:04 PM Report

Who wants to know rw anyway just look how hypocritical he is.

I was actually leaving for an early night, when my daughter in Calgary called to ask advice on a few discipline problems in her grade 3/4 class, regarding childish insults and lack of respect. As she explained, I started laughing. She asked why. I said, "I'll give you some specific suggestions for the situations you gave me, but, in the meantime, look at the view room for sootoday for the last few hours."
She is a little disillusioned.
