On a more serious note - Men's health issues. Listening to RW last night guffaw about having to take viagra(this is not a put down of RW, I would have responded in the same fashion). Thank god I had the presence of mind to listen to a good Doctor friend of mine who was trying to investigate my erectile disfunction that had been increasing over the years. His discussion went something like this. Erectile difficulties are one of the strongest indicators of bigger pipes plugged up with arterial sclerosis and as go the small pipes so with the bigger. I of course confirmed his suspicions by having a small heart attack and sure enough a stent was put in and a heavy regime of heart medications begun including pipe cleaners. Lo and behold I was soon out there proclaiming to the love of my life "stand back Eve, I don't know how big this thing is going to get. So all you John Wayne's out there learn to pay attention to your bodies and have a friend you can talk to about things that matter. I'm saddened today, yesterday I was trying to rush oncology to get up to visit a terminal friend. I was too late he passed on yesterday morning. Week and a half before he pulled his beloved aside to reveal a large lump on his side that he had ignored for months. When they saw a doctor it was much too late. Shit.

Good Morning all

(can I whine???) I don't wanna go to work, I don't wanna go outside yet (stamping my foot) ... (smile) that's better

Skipper Dave

You do a good service by telling your story. Men are noted for being too stubborn when it comes to their health. They like to think they will never get sick.. but you are proof that men DO get sick. LISTEN to your bodies (not just men..women too) If something changes TELL someone.. your sweetie , your doctor... get checked out

Have a good day everyone :D

Good morning everyone. Keep hanging in there Skipper because I`m sure intestinal fortitude and big boys have a lot to do with getting well.If that`s true then you will be fine. We have an inch of snow in London this A.M. and expect to see more in the Sault when I get home. Bobby and Mallet are we doing lunch on wed. Can`t get the question mark to work on this computer. I expect the daughter and grandchildren have worn it out. lol. Have a great day everone.

Thanks jay pee, have you tried the stuffed duck yet?

On a lighter note - Grey Cup - CFL - punting game only. Sorry, boring, if I got to watch and I will it's Calgary all the way, pass the popcorn and add the butter. In my misspent youth me and three of my fellow drunks went to Tarana with tickets. Now 40 years later I can tell you we never left the hotel room. We were all out of sync and at no time did all four of us get close to sobriety in order to make sane choices.
happy to say forty years later Im still not going to be there in person. I'll try to spot loyal members of the eternal brotherhood of souses. They wear uniforms - Body paint, goofy hats and no shirts. I had a walking stick that would hold exactly a mickey of booze to tide you over. Go Calgary.

Thanks for the updates. You know that all of your cyber 'buddies' are thinking of you and sending you best wishes.

I was with a couple of friends, a few years ago. One of them is in his mid sixties now, at the time he was probably 62. We were talking about the dreaded scope (colonoscopy) and he re-iterated what I told the 'guys' in our conversation. He and I, turns out, have the same Doc. The Doc told both of us, in our individual consultations with this Doc, that he didn't believe in the scope without some pre-cursors evident. Finally, my chum was granted the test and lo and behold, they found that he was in the early stages of colon cancer. It turns out, it was our conversation that inspired my buddy to get aggressive with the Doc and have the scope. It may have saved his life. (his words)

Point is, to confirm what nanag about these things with each other. In our case, the conversation started as a cry, by me, what to do about painful hemorrhoids. Heck, I can't even spell it, let alone find any answers. He heard my story and demanded that the Doc give him the scope. The conversation isn't the most comfortable. We used to sit around and talk about women, hockey and generally all the battles in life. Little did we know. But, not hemorrhoids!!
Wicket 11/24/2012 10:02:23 AM Report

Good morning... hey fellas, thanks so much for your public service comments by sharing your personal experiences re health issues. Seriously, men are the most stubborn about talking to anyone about body functions/health issues and concerns. If you are worried or scared, it will not help you to keep the concerns to yourself. Think of the people in your life that love and/or care about you...make the change, call the doctor, if it is nothing to worry about then you have gained peace of mind.
flyhawk25 11/24/2012 10:22:29 AM Report

No matter what it is there is always someone worse off.
Case in point - in the US this week a lady died who had been in a coma for 42 years. She outlived her mother who was her primary caregiver and never regained consciousness.
Think about the cost of that in terms of dollars and emotional wear.
I would encourage everyone of 'an age' to assign someone you trust Power of Attorney with the ability to sign a Do Not Resuscitate order.
None of us will get out alive so why do we as older people want to burden folks with impossible requests?
We treat our aging and ill pets more humanely.
In the Ukraine apparently public hospitals will not admit anyone over 65.
Spend the money on an Irish wake and a Viking funeral.
Brianne 11/24/2012 10:26:16 AM Report

Women can be just as stubborn as men on medical issues. I remember my mom breaking her wrist at camp, it was broke for two days... she came home and showed me. It was all bent and crooked, and made her go to the doctor. She also complained of severe hemorrhoid pain for years. I used to beg her to go and get it checked. It wasn't until she started having incontinence that she finally went......... too late ! Gone 5 weeks later. :(

Would she still be alive today ? More than likely.
nanag 11/24/2012 10:33:34 AM Report

A lot of the "fear" is embarrassment. The "I don't want some guy(male or female) grabbing my (boys) or stuffing something up my" ....well you know. But let me just tell you.. the guy doing the exam ... he/she is not judging what you have or have not(physical endowment) etc. I have been doing my job for many years and have seen a lllooootttt of bare parts. There is no mystery.. there is no judgement.. there is just "doing the job". As for the scope.. they give you a little something to dull the experience and you feel nothing pretty much... nearly everybody says.. "that wasn't bad.. don't know what I was so worried about" brave men.. us women have been poked and prodded and squeezed forever.. and we have not died from embarrassment.

Enough of that... I am getting in the mood..(wink wink) for Christmas shopping.. yes I said Christmas not holiday shopping.
Brianne 11/24/2012 10:40:01 AM Report

In the meantime, watched a Leonard Cohen concert on tv last night. Wow, that man has one sexy singing voice ! It appears he's having a comeback !
BIG BROTHER 11/24/2012 10:51:57 AM Report

There is no doubt...Cohen is a Canadian jewel. And he gets better with age, like wine. A line from one of his songs seems fitting to the topic, du jour........."I'm aching in the places where I used to play"!
BIG BROTHER 11/24/2012 11:07:52 AM Report

A coma doesn't mean they are on life support. The DNR only works when life support systems may be involved. Otherwise, a body can, sadly, remain alive for a long time, in some cases. I know you are aware of this, but it should be an addendum to what you've stated.

I have an acquaintance in town, who spent over 10 years in the old hospital, in a coma. He is now a resident of the new hospital, still in a comatose state, allegedly brain dead, but still alive, with no life support. Very sad indeed. A vital, athletic person, reduced to this!!
BIG BROTHER 11/24/2012 11:10:41 AM Report

Ooops, I suppose he would be on intravenous. That would be considered life support, as far as DNR's are concerned.
Brianne 11/24/2012 11:12:32 AM Report

I was totally enamoured listening to him, brilliant lyrics !
flyhawk25 11/24/2012 11:44:29 AM Report you know I've always thought of Cohen first as a poet.
That said - performing pays a lot better.
Frankly I am not impressed with his performing skills but so what.He gets paid to sing and my singing clears rooms and makes babies cry.
Of course I think of Willy Nelson as a great writer too. And of course Kristofferson (sic?).
And how about Gord Lightfoot who defined the Canadian landscape.
Pity old Al Purdy didn't sing.
Pity that Clint Eastwood does.

Big Bro: Know what your going through.

Well the day after Black Friday and took a quick jaunt to Crappy Tire for some Christmas light bulbs and hockey tape and it didn't seem all that bad? The only thing that took the time was stopping to chat with everybody.
There was a young couple with a crying young one (bad place to take the little one this time of year)and some were upset that they couldn't find what was in the flyer on the shelf along with people mad because someone saved up their Canadian Tire money all year to buy that item that was on sale.(And they were at the front of the line up as usual!)
All in all Ti's the season kiddos.

It sure is true what they say about religion and politics... both topics are not fit for a civil discussion. As can be witnessed today, for the most part it has remained civil.
Even JP quacked one for the good ole'skipper. Good for you JP, if only you could make an effort to expand your vocabulary.
The down side is , we are discussing probings and end of life issues, not exactly conducive for "LOLs".
I once went to get "probed" and I am not sure what the good Doc was using as a probing device when I realized both his hands were firmly placed on my shoulders.
I was visualizing Andy Williams singing "Moan River"....anyhoo....I am better now and still feel "manly".

Ok, so...I have given rw plenty ammunition to come back at me and I am sure he will not disappoint.

Colonoscopes, probing, hemies and asskicking. Sounds like a Liberal Party Convention to me. BTW according to the Pink Pony (the littlest Turdeau) Alberta rhymes with Steven Harper. When called out on his rant about the Conservative Party the Turd claimed that his interview in Keebec was taken out of context and he loves all people from Alberta except Harper. Also the Liberals "own" Canada so standby to be made into Liberal Party bitches.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

There ya go trying to think again. Don't strain yourself or you might get a hernia.
shakespeare 11/24/2012 5:03:30 PM Report

Regarding the Justin Trudeau "misspeak" ... yup it's hurting him and his party at this moment. But, let's cynically look at how it may play out and this was discussed by Nick Nanos, the pollster. Harper once said to Danny Williams that he didn't need Newfoundland to win the election, and I'm sure that, although he wasn't thinking this way at the time, Trudeau, if elected, would not need Alberta. So, all those NDP seats in Quebec might be up for grabs for someone who would represent La Belle Province and speak so highly of it. Let's look also at the gender vote (as many did with Obama), let's also look at the ethnic vote, as they did with Obama. Trudeau has taken a chance, and stolen the Tory thunder by coming out in favour of the controversial pipeline. Another thing I was reading is that Trudeau has surrounded himself with some pretty canny advisors. I don't know enough of him to form a strong opinion, but he's had the guts to take on a proven tough guy in the ring and hammer him. It seems that Steely may represent the dwindling number of uneducated, red-neck white males who used to hold sway and will do so increasingly less in the future.

Thanks Grump: hope to see you Monday or Wednesday.

I was as annoyed by PET's son's response as anyone.
But I agree with Shakespeare - there is a whole new electoral demographic.
I saw his father in action - both the good side and bad.
I saw his mother implode from the pressure of trying to rise above being eye-candy and a fertile receptacle.
The young man is bright, media smart and charismatic.
He has been the crown prince in waiting since his father's funeral.
He probably is flawed and perhaps as nutty as all of us. But he is very, very electable.
Most Canadians east of Alberta are fed up with the Alberta/Reform arrogance born from the good fortune of natural resources.
The kid is right - play to the eastern powerblock and screw the newly minted Teabillies out in the land of oil and big cows. And the cattle.
Getting voters out and controlling the 30 second sound-bytes wins elections.
The Obama team led by David Axelrod has created the primer.
If anyone still believes in an altruistic messiah look at history - Jesus couldn't win an election today.

I guess Harper is running so scared that in giving Justin Bieber the Diamond Jubilee Award for ... ???, he has insisted that the Biebs take up boxing and French lessons. He's also thinking of playing cameo performances at the Bieb's concerts. Clapton's version of "Alberta, Alberta" will apparently replace the national anthem to open tomorrow's game.

"We are still working on paying down a debt that he burdened this country with 40 years ago."

True, but Mulroney ran up an even larger bill. When Mulroney took over the deficit was $24 billion. When Mulroney stepped down, even though he had originally campaigned on eliminating the deficit he had instead run it up to $42 billion, adding greatly to the national debt. So I don't think it is fair to lay all the blame on Trudeau, although he certainly started us on the deficit road.
mallet 11/24/2012 11:03:16 PM Report

Problem is not with the people we elect, I regret to say it is us. We demand more and more but neglect to understand that we are the ones who have to pay in the end. Politicians only do what they think we want and like children we don't like to hear the word "NO" we cannot afford this or that service, so the only way left is for the government to borrow the money to fund the "WANT" of the people. Then of course we get to moan about the "deficit" and or "TAX INCREASES" to pay for what we have received in the past or are receiving.. And with that .. Good night.
