You are right. As I have found in my newly adopted home town of Elliot Lake, people are basically kind and can be very generous and helpful. I know there are people here in our disaster town who are getting things together to help with your disaster town..
And many on this board (even though they sound rude and grumpy at times) are just as kind and generous.

right wing 10/30/2012 8:48:49 AM ReportI don't think there were enough shots of the swinging crane in the media last night.
On top of stupid reporters standing in knee deep water they seemed to desperately want to turn this into a worse disaster then it already was/is.
There was also a failed attempt to turn Obama into a hero as the main stream media has him dashing back to the White House.
They provided intellectual quotes made by Obama such as "Sandy is a big and powerful storm" and "this will take a long time to clean up".

bluesslinger 10/30/2012 9:54:52 AM ReportHi eversons.
Anybody happen to see the two intrepid (ahem) reporters get totally swamped by a huge wave last night?
I would never want any harm to come to some stupid reporter standing on a beach challenging a hurricane, but to see these two get drenched and one go completely under was a lot more interesting (and just a tad bit satisfying) than another shot of the toppled crane.
By the way, Romney currently leads Obama 52% to 45% among voters who say they have already cast their ballots.

T-rat 10/30/2012 10:20:59 AM ReportI usually visit this site daily, more for amusement than anything else. But it never fails to amaze me that you can count on rw and bluesslinger to continuously and repeatedly utter the same old, same old negative, critical, glass-halfful, gloom and doom comments and views about anything and everthing. Are you two a couple? That would be so appropriate since misery does love company!
Wake up some morning and try to see one positive thing in your obviously gloomy and depressing existence. It just might rid you of the dark cloud you constantly walk under.

"Not as negative and gloomy as yours seems to be.", you state.
So your life is negative and gloomy, just not as bad as you perceive mine to be.
Now that you have made an open public statement that your life is somewhat negative and gloomy consider the following;
Perhaps it is this gloom and doom that you live with that is giving you the perception that others have gloom and doom in their lives when in reality they do not, due to your gloom and doom you are actually incapable of distinguishing if others have gloom and doom so in order to navigate in your daily reality you see everyone and everything as gloom and doom but not necessarily in that order or both gloom and doom at the same time.
Think about it....

There is a big difference somebody referring to their own shortcomings or appearances from others calling them names.
The guy probably had folks like yourself calling him fat all his life so he short circuits their pleasure by using the term himself, a typical and predictable behavior by those verbally bullied.
You lecture others on here about name calling yet you do so while trying to disguise it with a very thin veil.

Sam C 10/30/2012 11:48:48 AM ReportYogi... streetlights are a bit lower on the priority list than power outages. There is a patrol that takes care of street lights -- except when there are outages to correct -- but they don't respond to each report as it comes in. The report gets added to a list, and when the patriol crew is in that area they will take care of it... a more efficient method than having a crew bop around the city randomly.
As rw suggested, unless its the ONLY street light it isn't deemed urgent.

flyhawk25 10/30/2012 3:22:21 PM ReportGrace...good question.
I'd vote for Obama simply because I think he's done a reasonable job given a mess to start with.
Let me begin with what he's done that I disagree with.
Way back when I saw him reading Abraham Lincoln I had a sense that he planned to be the Great Conciliator. That's when I knew he was naive.
That would only have worked with moderate Republicans not the Tea Party mob in there now.
Remember at the beginning of his term when he moderated a sit-down in the garden over beer with two minor league clowns? Bullshit. Presidents don't have time for that silliness.
He bailed out the auto companies. I would have let GM and Chrysler fail and restructure - that's why the laws are there.Look what GM did - now they build more product offshore than ever.
I don't think he had much choice with the investment banks but to bail them out. But he neglected to protect the good smaller ones and small businesses.
They're fine now and I don't think they're voting Democrat at Lehman and the others.
He gave into the lobbyists to keep Gitmo open. He should have closed it by executive order and sent it to some Republican state that will never support him anyway.
Then he should have repealed most of the Homeland Security edicts which are more dangerous to democracy than any terrorists.
However he did get some of the bad guys dead. Good. That's all they understand and became symbols to the screwball Muslim radicals.
After trusting his military geniuses in Afghanistan he figured out they didn't know as much as they said so he unleashed drones and techno-warfare and saved American lives.
The economy is making a slow steady improvement - by all my research the most sustainable.
If I were to grade him I'd give him a C - up from a D two years ago.
But while I am no big fan I think he at least is not as dangerous and self-serving as Romney.
So far Mitt has given me no reason why he wants to be president except because he believes he deserves it.He'll say and do anything to get there and do and say anything to stay there for two terms.
And I'm not sure that Americans don't deserve that.I also don't know if anything short of a civil war can fix it.

Grace 10/30/2012 5:25:03 PM ReportBlues ..very interesting story.
Sure is a different viewpoint VS what we see in the main stream media
Even members of the community who do still support Obama, like Rashida Ali, admit a completely different understanding of the economy than the President does. Rashida explains, “most American people, especially people of my ethnicity, they don’t understand that people create jobs, not government.”
The “war on women, war on minorities, blacks, immigrants, gays and war anyone else who the left claims can only in their right mind, be and vote for the Democrat Party,” highlight a strategy to pit Americans against one another. Most Americans, however, do have conservative values. Even those you might think agree wholeheartedly with the government media are waking up to the liberal agenda, which is not about women, black people, or poor people--it’s about liberalism.
“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.” –Frederick Douglass

You meant tongue ya rat,all your post are b.s.Quack quack quack quack quack, more to come.
right wing 10/30/2012 5:53:02 PM ReportGrace...good question.
First I'd like to thank our moderator, Grace, for posing such an important and serious question.
I'd vote for Mitt Romney simply because I think he's capable of doing an excellent job given the mess he will be left with.
Let me begin with what he's done that I agree with.
I want to state first that I never saw him reading Abraham Lincoln.
A man being successful and wealthy is not a crime and is the underlying reason that the U.S. became what it is.
The right to pursue your dreams, your happiness and to live free.
Although Mitt had been painted as the "evil" corporate ruler by the Democrats my research on him proved to be the opposite.
The man that showed up to campaign and at the debates proved to also be otherwise and not as the Democrats portrayed him.
After his first debate it became clear why the Democrats were afraid of this candidate.
He has a solid record as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts.
He was immersed in politics at an early age as he participated in the political campaigns of both his parents.
He has a Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young, a joint Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Harvard.
Unlike the popular belief that Romney was given a silver spoon he secured his own position in management consulting and in 1977 he secured a position at Bain & Company. Later serving as its chief executive officer, he helped lead the company out of financial crisis.
Romney has a solid record as a leader and problem solver....and the U.S. certainly has it's problems.
All this talk about moderate Republicans and the Tea Party mob is just that, talk, political sparing if you will.
Why I'd vote for Mitt is as much about why I would have not nor ever would vote for Obama.
When the name Barack Hussein Obama first became thrown around as a potential Presidential runner I did as I always have...researched who this guy was.
It did not take long to realize Obama had virtually zero experience.
It was obvious that folks were voting against Bush as much as they were for Obama.
Folks also voted for him because he had the chance to be the first black president, he did run a slick campaign and he was up against what I would call a weak opponent, John McCain.
Remember at the beginning of his term when he promised transparency, change and fiscal responsibility.
Well I hoped then that he meant it.
It is now four years later and Obama, leaning on a dismal record is basically asking the American people to give him a pass, four more years and they will somehow move forward?
These claims that the economy is making a slow steady improvement are just that, claims, empty hollow ones.
If I were to grade him I'd give him a D- about the same grade I gave him about a year after he started and kept on using the mess he inherited as an excuse.
Each and every president inherits a mess on some level.
It is hogwash that Mitt thinks he "deserves it" and is "self serving."
Mitt Romney certainly does need the most unappreciated job in the country by any stretch of the imagination.
If there has ever been a presidential candidate that is not pretentious it is Mitt Romney.
I don't pretend to believe that Mitt Romney is a miracle worker or has all the answers.
I do believe that Mitt Romney has the experience, the education and the record to back up his claim that he can turn things around, bringing unemployment down which in turn will bring the economy up.
I see him being a no nonsense leader. A leader that will not waste time wallowing in blaming somebody for the mess, but as his record shows, will tackle the job given to him successfully as he has proven to do time and again.
right wing 10/30/2012 5:57:41 PM ReportSorry for the delay Grace, you knew I wouldn't let you down.

Jimssm 10/30/2012 6:17:02 PM ReportGrace...
Between Romney and Obama, I would vote Obama.
Even if you discount all of Romney's changed positions over the last few months (moving to the left), he is still an unknown quantity.
We know the businessman Romney, but we do not know how much he will be influenced by The Tea Party, the neo-cons, lobbyists, once he becomes President
With Obama, we know what we're getting.
So, I choose the devil I know.

In many cases he borrowed money to invest and his successes were worth more than his losses.Seldom did Romney invest more than 20 % of the Company's net worth from his own funds without borrowing the other 80 %.
Some of the Companies that he invested in were mostly turned around by moving their businesses out of the U.S.A. for cheaper labour.
He seldom became involved in the workings of the Companies he invested in---except to be a Director of the Companies.
His claim to regain 40 Million jobs back to the U.S.A. is as bogus as you get. Most of the Companies that left the U.S.A. will not return under any of Mitt's proposed plans.
The only way to regain 40 Million jobs in the U.S.A. is to become more competetive than the Foreign Companies and that just will not happen when the Foreign Companies have such cheap labour costs.
But you stick to your guns and support Romney but remember his failures with his successes.
Romney said that he would never borrow money from any foreign country--and he mentioned China---but first he has to pay off the massive debt that the U.S.A. has from China so he will have to deal with China whether he likes it or not.
right wing 10/30/2012 6:44:18 PM ReportOldie Goldie
Thanks for supporting and proving my assertions that Mitt is constantly portrayed as the "evil" corporate guy.
His record proves otherwise and the claims you are making proven to be false.
The media and Obama's campaign have given up on the falsehoods but hey you have at it.
right wing 10/30/2012 6:46:59 PM Report"In many cases he borrowed money to invest and his successes were worth more than his losses.Seldom did Romney invest more than 20 % of the Company's net worth from his own funds without borrowing the other 80 %."
Hahahahahahahaha....I hate to tell you Oldie but that is simply a smart business man.
Now you see you just can't make up entertainment like this.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 6:50:08 PM ReportJimssm, I wouldn't go so far as to call him a devil, but I don't think you really know him. If you did, I don't think you would choose him. In fact, I don't think most of the people who voted for him would if they really put in the time to research him instead of believing everything they are spoonfed by the entertainers, educational system, and left-wing media. They should look at some of his own words in his book, his early influences, and the way he is treating our allies in favour of those that hate us.
Just Curious 10/30/2012 7:14:32 PM ReportWelcome to the right wing google, copy and paste column...I think they need to give you your own column as they did Hammertime. He faded off into the sunset soon after...Wicket,it's useless, regular news dosn't stand a chance on here anymore.Over half the posts on here are RW,and he still claims to have a job/business..:)
statusquo 10/30/2012 7:19:09 PM ReportSpelly,
I think the reason you wouldn't choose him is rooted in the fact that "Obama" is not a "good" Christian.
He is too liberal and God forbid, potentially a Muslim.
(Note the blatant contradiction in my last sentence)
I never had a preference for either Democrats or Republicans. In fact, I still believe that Richard Nixon was a very good president....and so was Bush senior.
Having said that, currently the GOP has been soiled by the utterly demented Tea Party. A collection of Christian right adherents, i.e "freaks" that frankly, scares me. These folks are completely out of their minds!
They take the Revelation literally!
Where have the intellectual, cerebral righties gone?..i.e Buckley and Will? Folks that could actually sustain a reasoned opinion and could actually persuade by their sheer acumen?
Now we have buffoons like Rush and that skank Coulter. Utterly despicable characters.
Now our neighbours to the south can potentially choose a Mormon as their next president. Have you looked into the Mormon myth ? Do you know what it is based on? It is more fantastic than the Bible and it's plagiarized derivative the Quran . It's utterly laughable.
Having said that, a homosexual black Jew would stand a better chance to become President than an atheist in the good ole U.S of soundbites.
(smiley face)
Snobank 10/30/2012 7:26:21 PM ReportAre Canadian and American interests and objectives identical? In his last post Spelly used "we" as if he was a citizen of the United States. He is not the only poster to do this, just the most recent. Posters of all leanings do lt. Should we just lower the Maple Leaf and just run up Old Glory?
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 7:27:47 PM ReportYes, I know about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and some of the tenets of Mormonism. I don't agree with lots of it but each to his own religion, even you atheists occasionally make a good point, if only you didn't totally denigrate someone else's view.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 7:29:51 PM ReportSnobank, I just mentioned our allies in that post. Most of them happen to be the same.

Seriously JC, what local news would you like having discussed?
The car break ins? ok....damn scumbags!
The Wawa flood?...ok....damn rain!
Mr "Nothing" Brian Hayes?...ok, damn voting for the ruling party.
Harper turning Canada into a giant Walmart for China?..ok...when's the next election?
Caps on environment Canada weather reports?....sizzling topic but SamC covered that...can you google "soporific"?
If you want to discuss local topics then throw me a bone.
If you like to discuss topics that are to your liking then get on facebook or come up with an original idea.
In the meantime may I suggest the scroll button.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 7:40:56 PM ReportI haven't been able to locate the word "we" anywhere in my post. I was just responding to Jimssm's post.

Interesting topic.....I thing we in Northern Ontario have more in common with Northern Michigan than we have with Toronto.
Having said that, my cabinet post for you is still open for the event that Northern Ontario should separate and become it's own province or "Reich" as it were.
As long as I am supreme leader I am willing to assign you a ministerial position of your own choosing.
My first dictum would be open season for ducks year round.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 7:49:02 PM ReportSnobank, you may have a point there. Maybe we should run up Old Glory. We're going down the same road, and we will get to the end of it together.

I honestly wish that Obama's record during his first term in office was even half way to a stellar performance resulting in an unquestionable winning by a landslide.
Now I already know what some of my lefty friends are going to say in response to this post but I am sincere in my statement.
Instead Mr. Hope and Change can lay claim to a couple of short term downward points in unemployment numbers, Obamacare which is a nightmare and the majority of the American people don't want and he killed Bin Laden.
statusquo 10/30/2012 7:56:12 PM ReportSpelly,
You may not have used "we" per se, but "I" comes out loud and clear and repeatedly...i.e "semantics"

;)
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:01:14 PM ReportCome on right wing, you know you don't believe those unemployment numbers and neither do I. They don't count the people no longer on unemployment benefits or those on less than full-time employment. Real unemployment is far higher than those numbers suggest. Our hero, Rush, called that lower unemployment number. He said they would bring it down right before the election and, lo and behold, there it was.

Oh I don't believe them, I stated that he could lay claim to it.
He can also lay claim to killing Bin Laden although very few ever saw the body.
Bin Laden was quickly disposed of at sea so as not to give a place to worship.
Pretty hard for anybody to worship Bin Laden nailed to a wooden stake out front of the world trade center memorial now wouldn't it.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:06:38 PM ReportStatus, your comprehension leaves something to be desired if you think anything in that post has anything to do with me thinking as an American. It concerned the way I perceive the American president and I was conveying my feelings to Jimssm, nothing more than that. Any place the word "I' was used it was not in the context of thinking of myself as American.
statusquo 10/30/2012 8:14:23 PM Reportrw,
No one, not even Jesus H. Christ himself could have turned the state of affairs around in a mere four years!
And the state of affairs will not be turned around anytime soon.
We are dealing with a world wide shift in the economic and social structure as we know it!
Obama has steadied the disintegration somewhat but there is only so much he can do. Taking into account the steadfast refusal of the extreme right to work with him on a compromise i.e Rush's statement "we want him to fail"..Obama has been fighting an uphill battle from the day he took office.
He averted a depression with the bailouts...bailouts that were started and approved by the previous Bush administration.
He has restored good will in foreign policy and has not alienated so-called allies as erroneously stated .
The economic disaster started under Bush Jr..... the ultra expensive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan started under Bush Jr....Wars that have destabilized the whole region and will haunt the U.S and us for decades to come.
The Republicans with Romney and his douchebag sidekick Ryan are just not credible for the discerning mind. The only reason they are a possibility for a win is the fact that things aren't rosy and won't be rosy in the conventional sense and they represent a different flavour. A glimmer of hope for a return to the fifties. But that ain't gonna happen..no matter whom they elect.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:21:12 PM ReportGoodwill in foreign policy, excuse me while I
ROTFL.
Goodwill with whom?! Certainly not with our allies. Excuse the word "our", I would hate to have it to be once again misinterpreted.
And as far as Rush wanting Obama to fail, you with your advanced comprehensive skills should have been able to see that he meant he wanted the policies to fail because he could see where they would lead.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:24:49 PM ReportThose bailouts did nothing but rob the taxpayers.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:28:54 PM ReportIf Britain and Israel didn't have to retain a conciliatory tone with the POTUS they would tell you how they have been alienated. And do you really think telling Putin he would have more "flexibility" when re-elected was a good idea? Putin is playing him for a sucker and having great success at it.

Jimssm 10/30/2012 8:40:55 PM ReportSpelly...
My point is that I know him a lot more than I know Romney. The big argument against Obama was that he was unproven. Well, now he is.
The proof is in the pudding. Unless Obama is hiding it very well, he hasn't brought all the left wing socialists into positions of power as the far right predicted. He's had 4 years to do it and it hasn't happened.
He's got a good portion of the lobbyists out of the beltway. Romney would return them to the trough, no question.
Romney has surrounded himself with many of the same people that helped GWB. How is he going to resist the pressure when they demand payback ?
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 8:48:44 PM ReportOf course he has appointed left wing socialists. How about Van Jones, the avowed communist who had to resign once his radical leanings were discovered?

“I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested,”

right wing 10/30/2012 8:51:46 PM Report"He's got a good portion of the lobbyists out of the beltway"

I could care less about any of that stuff… If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don’t know me.”

Van Jones was a minor advisor to the CEQ, a position that didn't even merit vetting by Republicans.
It was only after Glenn Beck got on his case that he resigned. And just because Beck called him a Communist doesn't make him an 'avowed Communist'.
Do you have any other examples of left wing wackos CURRENTLY in the Obama administration ?

Honey Boo Boo, if she was old enough to vote would cast her vote for Obama.
On the other hand, "Snookie" is cheering for Romney.
The intellectual morass is mind-boggling.
What to do?
Jimssm 10/30/2012 9:12:51 PM Reportrw...
Christie IS touring with Obama tomorrow.
Romney did get his photo-op, though. Loading a box (probably empty) into a truck.
Sandy has to be driving both of these guys nuts. Obama wondering if his lack of being on the campaign is hurting him. Romney going crazy because Obama gets to act 'presidential'.
All the while the typical American is relieved because they get a respite from all the election BS.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 9:13:25 PM ReportThe fact that Jones is avowed means that he admits to it. It just took Beck to disclose it.

Spellchecker 10/30/2012 9:19:49 PM ReportJimssm has just described politics in general. It's not limited to the United States although they do carry it to the extreme. That's why we're heavily into it here in the blue room. They're always electioneering. It's a steady stream. Loads of fun.
Jimssm 10/30/2012 9:21:30 PM ReportSpelly...
The same thing happens in Republican administrations too.
They appoint people who get vetted and later have to resign because of stupid things they say or said earlier in their lives.
They fall on their swords to protect the boss.
Spellchecker 10/30/2012 9:22:20 PM ReportHere you do again, status, with that comprehensive skill of yours. It was Jimssm who mentioned Beck, not me. It matters not, really, whether I consider him credible or not. Nothing I said infers that I consider him credible.

Spellchecker 10/30/2012 9:39:05 PM ReportI never said anything about descending into hell. You have just made another assumption about my beliefs. Oldie Goldie 10/30/2012 9:39:17 PM ReportRight Wing--- I posted as much about Romney as you did but your posting did not talk about his business failures.

I think I struck a nerve when your attempts at salience when quoting inane bible verses where rebutted by me.
You take things far too personally.
I would suggest to keep your religion to yourself and quit complaining about "foul" language.
World history is "foul" and perfuming it in pleasant terms isn't going to make it smell any better.
If anyone needs to cool down it ain't me.

statusquo 10/30/2012 10:04:03 PM ReportSpelly,
Dante's inferno isn't to be taken literally...like you take the Bible. It's a metaphor of the human torment. A heros journey into the abyss. In it's essence it is more salient and pertinent than any passage in the Bible i.e....a book crafted for political reasons by an oppressed people with some folksy wisdoms but not much else.
End of discussion and good night!
