Good Quacking morning to you jean-paul!
Went back and read the posts after I signed out last night and I feel kind of bad that I left RW alone to defend the just plane obvious when it comes to the usage and posts here in the blue room.
Retread, nanag, and Just curious....seriously?
You haven't mastered the life skill of SCROLL?
You see...us righties and lefties...well..we mastered the skill when we first learned how to work a computer and we are pretty good at it..no brag...just fact.
I suggest how ever that when you see a post starting with the names Grace, Right Wing, Right Winger, Status, Learning,Fly hawk, Blueslinger, Spellchecker etc (sorry would be a long long list couldn't get everyone)...practice the age old tradition of S>>C>>R>>O>>L>>L
BECAUSE MORE THAN LIKELY WE WILL BE TALKING YANKEE!

Post to your hearts content on any topic you wish..either we practice our scroll skills or comment.

I scroll what I choose to scroll and I post when I feel like it.
At least when I throw out a comment the "Yankee" chat ceases for a line or two while you "speak" to those of us who don't care to endlessly "speak" political (seems to be the main language here).
Most times I find the conversations boring but once in a while there is something to "listen" to.(but that happens very rarely).
I just enjoy throwing in a comment once in a while... to see the verbal reaction. You know .. like throwing out something shiny on the ground and watching a whole murder of crows fight over it. Hilarious.. you guys remind me of keystone cops stepping all over each other trying to be the first to respond to my comments..it worked every time :D

Jimm good morning! Don't you find it odd and somehow wrong to have campaigners coming from other countries.
If I am not mistaken canvasers are paid for their time. Wouldn't bringing in people from other countries displace other US citizen workers?
Seems hypocritical at the very least...

Good morning all! Just thought I would let you know that at this point all is well in Wawa! Highway 101 has opened one lane so we can get out if need be and grocery trucks can get in! 2 houses lost and one motel but no reported injuries! We are a lucky community at this point in time. Have a great day to all of you out in the real world.

You missed a good talk show this past week on CBC radio.
The topic was why do Canadians get so involved in U.S. politics.
This is a country wide phenomenon and many folks like it.
One of the main reasons given was that U.S. politics is more interesting and exciting
It was also the view that who gets elected as the U.S. president is important not only to Canadians, as their main trading partner, but important to the world.
Grump 10/27/2012 8:37:55 AM Report

What's all this nonsense about interest in Canada? This is a true blue American site. Didn't you know that?
Jimssm 10/27/2012 8:57:49 AM Report

rw...

The US economy was going into the dumpster long before Obama.

...and no, it wasn't Bush either.

The left-right polarization of their politics is putting them into a gridlock where their system can't react as it should.

example...Obamacare. A bureaucratic nightmare that is much too complicated to run efficiently. Wasted money going to insurance companies, middle men, and pencil pushers long before it gets to the people that need healthcare. Why ? Because it couldn't be put into practice without giving all the Doctors, drug companies, insurance companies, politicians, HMO's all their piece of the profit.

Romney says he will dismantle Obamacare if elected....but he can't without a Repub Senate. All he can do is strangle it by regulating it to death.

The US system as a whole is very inefficient. That was ok in a closed, US-only economy, as the waste was spent in the USA and profitted Americans. Now however, with a global economy, waste increases debt, and that debt is sometimes owed to people/companies/countries that aren't American.

So yes...down the dumpster.

statusquo 10/27/2012 9:05:29 AM Report

I guess I have to be careful about what I post in here as some posters apparently get irritated when U.S politics are discussed.
Having said that, since there has not been a decapitation, a police bungling or a hit and run of a family pet as of late I really have no idea what to post except something about the by far most entertaining reality show there is......the U.S election .
We could talk about the non-event of Orazietti not running for the liberal leadership and then watch the regular airheads descent into "lefty" /"righty" babble ad nauseam.
Very rarely has any political thread in the Blue Room been conducted in a civil and constructive manner, be it federal. provincial or on U.S politics.
Folks voice their displeasure about the constant babble regarding the election south of the border but don't seem to mind the incessant , idiotic quacks of our resident cretin. Or the Bible quotes that come with a certain regularity. I scroll by for the most part.
For those who think that politics south of the border don't affect Canada , think again. Canada is utterly dependent on a healthy U.S economy and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Regardless of the outcome of the election, the U.S.A will remain the dominant military and economic force for some decades yet .

We as Canadians should be paying close attention on what goes on south of the border but also to what goes on in Ottawa under the current government.
China is on the rise but has slowed down considerably and internal turmoil and corruption is something we don't get to see . Yet Harper wants to strengthen economic ties with them, i.e he is working to push through something called the Canada-China Foreign Investment Protection Agreement (FIPA).
It this comes to fruition it will give China carte blanche to buy out Canada's natural resources....not just oil.
Under this trade agreement Chinese companies could sue Canadian governments, federal and provincial
outside the Canadian court system if our
government would try to enforce laws to protect Canadian interests such as the environment , labour laws etc.and such laws would be perceived to limit profits for said companies.
It would curtail Canada's sovereignty over the distribution of tax revenues and essentially paralyze our own government's input on job creation , environment , labour laws due to the Billion Dollar lawsuits that Chinese companies could pursue against our government .
Harper does not seem to have a problem with that. Sure Canada needs foreign investment to develop these resources but we should be more careful whom we borrow from and under what conditions.
After all, China is still a communist country with an atrocious human rights record, and a blatant disregard for the environment and a penchat for shutting down News channels if the content is not to their liking.

Ok...done....happy now?....The O and R were never mentioned.

Ace of base..I'm just wondering what your answer would be if any of our local municipal politicians went south of the border to capaign for either candidate.
I would think that since as an elected official.he or she's first obligation is to the constituants that voted for them and by going to the states for this purpose is not in their duty or role as an Ontario municipal councillor.
As a private citizen sure but once elected would they be in breach of their responsability as a representative?
Just wondering..you seem to know alot about this stuff.

Well said Status. These bright neo- con stars haven't got a clue just how dangerous P.M. Harper is and will be. Sadly by the time we get rid of him it will be a very different Canada. 'It was also the view that who gets elected as the U.S. president is important not only to Canadians, as their main trading partner, but important to the world.'

I couldn't agree more rw. I've said it before...truth of the matter is, the republicans in power are probably a better deal for Canada. They are less protectionist and therefore more open for business, which we know we need.

Having said that, their (GOP's) business at any cost ie. environment, labour and their lack of respect for other countries (ie. Iraq) right to sovereignty over their own country, is at the root of my dislike for them. At their heart, it is profit and greed...nothing more than that.

SQ has it right....China is who we should be paying attention to; more-so with Harper at the helm in Canada. He fits the GOP mentality...profits above all else!!
Grump 10/27/2012 9:45:12 AM Report

Grace slip off the rose coloured for a few minutes. When I complained about MP Hayes doing nothing all his supporters jumped in saying give him time. He has had time now and we have Federal jobs leaving the Sault in alarming numbers. We have not seen a dime of the big Federal announcements, one made by Harper in person and others just announced. There have been cuts on many things the most vulnerable Canadians need to exist while pouring billions out in aid worldwide. These new laws he is ramming through without debate or time for anyone to scan them is setting Canada on a dangerous course. He has truly earned his 50% plus disapproval rating. If he has some good points please attach supporting facts not the usual gruel your peers would provide.

Grump,
You have definitely hit on a sore spot with me.

Tony Martin was/is a decent man. He worked hard for all of his constituents, from a grass roots approach. Certain people on here went very far out of their way slamming Tony, explaining to all of us unwashed, how much better off we would be with a rep from the governing party instead of a 'do-nothing' rep. from the 3rd. party.

Well, where are these 'prophets' of all things Tory. As you said, Federal jobs are evaporating from our tax base at an alarming rate.

Grace You are a little confused but certainly sound more like a Liberal than anything. I was a long time Conservative back when it didn't spell sleazy. I'm now a Blue Liberal, I believe most are Red Liberals but I also know Orange Liberals. This is far from perfect but at least it sets a middle course. I admired Jean Chretien as when it came to the economy he was pretty far right and when it came to social issues he was a little left. That said He and Martin paid down the debt while Harper has added over 200 Billion to ours and still climbing. That said it appears he was an effective Conservative while Harper is a free spending Reformer. Actions speak to me not rhetoric. No doubt the Chinese are holding this new paper and therefore are holding Steve by the boys.

This time I went to Bay St.and acted like a dumb old guy. No stretch for me.
Time - 12 days.
The difference was that here I had to pay to park. There it cost me travel expenses but got to visit family and friends.
Missing in all this is the 5 year renewal - another cash grab.
But no different than what Ontario's Liberals are doing with 'free' health care.
More on my experience a bit later.

Big Brother I believe that Tony started off a decent man but when he voted the party line and not his own or the majorities beliefs that was no longer a decent man. Further when Tony publically took credit for things coming into the Sault that he had no effect over he was past decent in my mind. That said I was one of his most vocal critics but found it hard to believe that the backlash would elect a dud like Hayes. Also in fairness I'm sure Tony tried at least in the beginning but he had little education, little to no work or life experience other than a failed priesthood and the soup kitchen. You have to wonder why the Sault elects folks like Tony and Bryan who at best are poorly qualified.

Since we're talking US politics, here's what's coming out latley about the Benghazi massacre that Obamma is lying about. (you know the one where Obummer allowed four of his own citizens to be murdered and didn't lift a finger to help, all in the name of political expediency)

These are facts that Obummer is denying and dodging;

Washington officials watched, received emails and denied calls for help in real-time.

The State Department was watching the attack live, in real-time.

Emails were sent to some 400 people in Washington DURING the attack, in real-time.

Among the recipients of those emails was the White House Situation room.

At the time those emails arrived at the White House Situation Room, Obama was meeting with his Security Team.

The calls for help from the CIA operatives were NOT ignored and did NOT go unanswered. The requests to enter the fight from bases in Italy were NOT ignored and did NOT go unanswered.

All were DENIED.

Two of the Americans that were murdered were at one point on the roof of the annex and from their vantage point, could see the position of the mortars being fired at them. They “painted” that position with a laser used to guide weapons from military aircraft.

But the aircraft, which could have included Blackhawk helicopters and a C-130 gun ship, (which is specifically designed for close air support roles supporting ground troops, and flying urban ops)had also been ordered to stand down.

Obummers Worst Nightmare is catching up with him.

Now let's hear from the President of the Maroons for Obummer Society and his underlings...:)

Grump,
I don't like party line either, but I don't have to tell you the realities of party line in a Parliamentary system. Go against party line and you will definitely find yourself way out in the back bench. As Don Cherry would say...'even the Hockey News won't be able to find you'!! Therefore, it is important to understand the ideology of the party you vote for or that you vote against.

As far as taking credit for any of the 'good' announcements coming to the Sault...that is just what a politician does, as you are well aware.

I think you simply have a hard time with NDP and that's understandable. Party's on the outer edges scare me also. But I'd rather err on the left than the right.

I went for my flu shot yesterday. Had to wait a month for the appointment but when I got there the service was very prompt, professional and friendly.
No cost.
So I asked the lady with the needles about pneumonia shots and shingles shots.
She explained that my doc could do it.
The pneumonia shot is - no cost. However the shingles shot is - $190.Unless I have private insurance.
Now I've had shingles and really don't want it again. And I can afford the $190. But my understanding is these shots are a bit of a risk.
So do I want to pay that kind of money to have to be protected - maybe.
I already have to pay cash for PSA blood tests for prostrate cancer. But women get breast cancer screening for free.
Seems to me that being an old guy in Ontario is not only risky but expensive.

So, the "Frankenstorm" will be upon us in a couple of days................ power? Outages?

I often wonder, when the power goes out, what happens to the "dumb meters" do they reset themselves and send false information ?

Why doesn't PUC credit everyone's account, everytime there is no power, after all every other service you have ( phone, cable) will all do that.

Bets on the power outage when the big snow storm hits and how long it will last. Winner gets a nice cozy winter hat or mitts or scarf, made in their favourite colours/design handmade by me !

SO, lets set up the rules for this bet.

1. length of power outage ( even if it only affects a small area in town)
2. How much snow will fall

( I will mark down everyone's entry ) IF the power does not go out....which is not very likely haha, then it will be based on the total snowfall !

In anycase he is gone and we have another and we can trade stories some day.

It sounds you are some what like my beliefs in Politics. I consider myself a Social Conservative ... we will always have some poor people who will require assistance at some time; but assistance should not last forever.
What seems to be the larger problem is Gov't is not shy about removing the restrictions on big business, however they are constantly regulating "mom's & pop's" into extinction. In order to impress the rest of the world Canada seems to be giving unrestricted access to our natural resources.
I understand this is not a simple solution but that is what they get the big bucks for.
I would also like to have the vote for PM instead of party choosing who I should like. As it stands right now the candidate that throws the most money to the party gets to be PM reguardless of his points of view.

If I remember correctly Grump, the vote on same sex marriage was a 'vote your conscience' vote. Party discipline wasn't required.

These aren't arguments Grump. They are facts. Not facts according to me. They are just the reality of Canadian politics, whether I like it or not.

I am a liberal at heart. The cons lost me at Mulroney. His deceptive way of sneaking in Free Trade was over the top. Among other things.

Sorry Spelly...but since you're back let me point out your error in grammar yesterday.
Semi-colons are used to divide structures of equal value.
For example:
two main clauses with subordinate clauses;
lists such as this.
Colons are used like those ubiquitous dashes that many of us use - to point to things.
And thanks again: my prostate is still standing.

Thanks for the grammar lesson, flyhawk. I'm sorry it will probably be to no avail. You know the old saying, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I have observed that very thing in recurring errors on my WORDS OF THE WEEK lists. I suppose I forgot that grammar lesson many moons ago and I am too lazy to expend the effort to re-learn it.

I am please to report that my prostate also appears to be in good condition. Perhaps we can indulge in a libation down the road some day to revel in the state of our respective prostates.

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #396
It appears as if roughly half the people in this country think that they're in mortal danger from their own government. That's a lot of people sensing a lot of malice and threat. I worry that I don't see it. Sure, I see inefficiency and incompetence, but I've always seen that - regardless of which party's in office. And frankly, I've always welcomed it. I don't like my big bureaucracies to be cold, calculating, profit-making enterprises driven by a steely, clear-headed singular vision. A cursory glance through history would indicate that well-organized governments tend to enjoy well-organized parades, followed by well-organized ethnic cleansing. Which is why I celebrate the magnificent, muddle-headed ineptitude of our democracy. As far as I'm concerned, a little confusion and waste may keep the trains from running on time, but it also keeps people like me from getting a one-way ticket in a cattle car. Are our tax dollars being misspent on poorly run social programs? You bet! Do we get more buck for our bang at the local Post Office, Amtrak station, nuclear submarine or methadone clinic? Of course we do! But keep in mind that bureaucrats who can't find their ass with a flashlight and a hand mirror are not likely to find you either. To paraphrase Bobby McGee: "Freedom's just another word for who the hell's in charge here?!"

This again , shows how lack Canada is in emergency measures. To me, the attitude is, well, we'll just sit back and see if anyone steps up to help, then we'll decide what to do :( Again, a crisis situation ( sort of reminds me of the failure of action in Elliot Lake), let's not do this again. This will cost millions of dollars to fix, and also millions of dollars more on shipments to take the long way around. The highway should be gone over with a fine tooth comb , as who knows where it will let go now.

Also with more rain/snow in the forcast, it's not looking good for Wawa right now.
sweetc 10/27/2012 8:07:28 PM Report

Grump 10/27/2012 8:09:29 PM Report

I don't recall who mentioned trucks and equipment problems. Most of the east/west trans Canada trucking is already up on Hwy. 11 and will stay there for some time to come. Secondly there is likely more heavy construction equipment north and east of Wawa than you would find in the Sault. That said both governments need to get off their respective asses and help out now!!!!
sweetc 10/27/2012 8:15:11 PM Report

If you ask the truckers, Grump, yuo will learn that it is a terrible route. Not to mention very long especially if heading to Southern Ontario. Not all the trucks are licensed to go into the States so for a lot of them that is not an option. Of course I guess they could ship out of Thunder bay by boat to Southern Ontario instead of hwy 11. Just think of how long it will take SSM to get anything from the west.

Well, we're screaming aren't we !

What a shame, that when disaster strikes, the "gov\t is closed for the weekend'. There should have been "officials" there yesterday........... where is the emergency/disaster crews ?

Really !!!! Where are they, and secondly, WHO are they......... no one knows.

I bet not one mp knows who to contact for such a situation, and like typical gov't offices " oh, you have to call this department " and so on and so on.

Someone mentioned earlier about women being in power......... I think it's time........ nothing better than someone who cares about the people......... time for change !

Sweet and Brianne..
Emergency measures are being implimented and procedures ar being followed.
This is not the first time this highway was closed due to wash outs. I remember way way back After a flash heavy rain below the mile hill to Old Mill bay The harmony bridge and the culvert over the creek just before you reached the camp ground both being washed out. Always remember watching a normally slow river rage through where the day before there was a bridge.
About ten years or so two houses slid down a 50 foot embankment on the Goulais river..

Relax a little bit..skilled people are on it. Help where you can.
Donations will be made neighbours and strangers will band together offering suport and comfort and everything will work out.

Horrifying, yes, i'm sure the people who have lost their businesses, homes, vehicles, personal belongings, would agree with you that it is a humbling experience and are totally awe inspired by the whole thing. I bet they are all relaxed while they've lost their personal possessions, businesses, income, etc.

I'm sure they also agree that it is amazing that the water destroyed the highway and that there is no way out or in , possibly for days, and that at best it would just be a cow trail for now.

i'll bet they also agree that getting air lifted out of their homes was a pleasant experience and having to stay somewhere else.

I'm also sure that the people on the reserves are also happy that they've been evacuated from their homes too, and having to live elsewhere.

No Grace no Wawinions are rioting yet not sure that will happen anymore than usual on a Saturday night LOL.
We have lots of groceries and stuff as highway 101 is open in one lane so we can get out if need be!
The crews are working very hard here to get the roads open, I know that quite a few of them were stranded between washouts overnight were flown off them at 3 pm the next day they went home ate and were back out at it. My cousins husband and friend's hubby have not been home for more than an hour at a time since this has started. It is a very humbling experience but it has been a blessing too no one was injured or died and we are extremely thankful for that. It has also pulled us together as a community big time! Our Mayor is working really hard to get the right people here to help us and doing everything in her power to get the right people here to fix this mess! And Guys please don't be so hard on Grace if you scroll up I put an update on early this morning and she thanked me for it and asked if any aid was being planned or sent from the Sault. Have a great night all!!

Glad to hear some efforts are taking place, no news about anything is being broadcasted online etc.

We are concerned for the well being of those in need. And I for one will be making my donation to the family in need this coming week.

Death is not the only devastating occurrence in someones world.. of course it is at the top but everyone handles and processes situations differently.

Some people on here (and elsewhere) are saying "nobody died"..the road is washed out big deal BUT...for some it goes much deeper than that.

Just the change in everyday routine can seem overwhelming to some. We all need to realize compassion and empathy goes a long way in helping people deal with what some feel is "no big deal".

A kind word and a little generosity goes a long way
