Cashmier 10/12/2012 1:59:32 PM ReportI see someone made the same comment on a point I was trying to make the other day... opinion on who won and who lost in the debates is entirely based on bias. This type of performance is almost impossible to view objectively.
I had too much to do last night, so I didn't catch more than a snippet of the debate. The portion I caught was when Ryan was arguing against the removal of troops in Afghanistan. This is central to my issue with the Republican platform.
The Republicans have been running a campaign based on the economy, but they are running a completely contradictory campaign when it comes to international relations and the US armed forces.
One of the biggest hurdles to their economic recovery is their national debt - a debt in large part created by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In order to improve the international value of their dollar, thereby improving their ability to drive economic recovery, they need to reduce their debt. This is a very simple and basic economic principle.
Military activity = government spending = taxpayer money. The US cannot maintain their current military activity and simultaneously decrease their national debt. Romney and Ryan keep talking about a strong military and wanting to meddle in the conflicts of other countries. They simply cannot conceivably maintain or expand American military activities and improve their economy at the same time. I'm sorry, but this is very basic economics and this contradiction should cause intelligent people to question the validity of their claims and promises.

He and I are the same age and neither of us suffer fools well.I would have probably melted down and said "Look sonny, stop banging the party drum for a minute and do your homework. Our moderator has traveled and analyzed the world more than you."
But Ryan was every bit as good as I expected. He is a bright, articulate and apparently decent man.
Certainly in comparison to Palin, Quayle, Agnew and Gore he is effective. Unfortunately he's nowhere as nasty as Cheney.
None of this will matter for the Democrats if Obama doesn't grow a pair and pound Romney. And Mitt is 'poundable'.

66cherokee 10/12/2012 4:22:05 PM ReportI have been away, so haven't kept up with View Room. I am making a comment on teachers. I believe that they should be entitled to bargaining, that's a given, but they should also be considered "Essential". A nurse, fireman, paramedic can't strike because they are considered "Essential services". Well the teachers say that they look after your child during a day more than a parent does. I have an empty nest. If bargaining is taken away, so it will be with other proffessions. Now the teachers want to take a "PAUSE" because it's all volunteer work Well what about that hockey coach, baseball coach, soccer coach, and any of those coaches out there; convenors, the person who takes the time to make schedules. Those people may not have any children playing sports, but they volunteer. These people don't get paid. And more than LIKELY coach some of those teachers children. So, I think those teachers should take a hard long look at what they are doing. Between the Liberals and the teachers, the students are being ignored. THEY are the loosers in this conflict.
Some of those teachers are taking this into their classroom, and as far as I can remember, teacher/government conflicts were not part of the curriculum. I know that this is going on as I have a granddaughter who talked about it. Politics should be banned from classrooms, that kind anyway.

Teachers shouldn't bring politics with them into the classroom, but the students are asking questions and deserve answers.
Those answers should be as straight-forward and unbiased as possible, explaining the facts of the situation without any unhelpful hyperbole and rhetoric.
I understand what you're saying about other volunteers who are not teachers. Teachers are not choosing to withdraw from these activities simply because they are unpaid and on their own time; they have chose to take this action because there are no other options open to them to make a point with the government.
Yes, students become pawns in this situation, but let's not forget that it was the government that stripped-away teachers' right to bargain and to take job actions (strike).
And it has already spread to other sectors: OPSEU and CUPE have joined with the two teachers federations (ETFO and OSSTF) in filing suit against the government.

What Ryan was arguing about when it came to Afghanistan was when to pull out of the country and how to do it.
He made several excellent points. Advertising to your enemy what the exact date of withdrawal is NEVER a brilliant idea.
There are fighting seasons in Afghanistan they coincide with the weather, i.e., winter, this must be coordinated with a troop withdrawal.
The U.S. must ensure that they have completed what they started, training of the Afghan forces, slow withdrawal of U.S. troops to ensure the security of what has been gained.
This is what Ryan was trying to debate with Biden.
You want to blabber about the economy.
Well pal, Obama had his chance to completely pull out of Afghanistan when he first took office but did not.
Why.
Because he suddenly found himself in the grown up chair and instead he had to eat a word that must have tasted like sh*t to him.
A word that he at one time stated over and over again would NEVER work....SURGE.
Obama had to do exactly what had to be done in Iraq, a military surge and it cost plenty of lives.
Now he is focusing on staying in that grown up chair because he likes it...doesn't know squat, but he likes it.
Now he is pulling the troops out so it looks like he is concerned, and doing something, about the economy.
Biden's responses to Ryan on this were like a spoiled child stamping his feet.
But you probably missed that because as you said...you only caught a snippet but based an entire post on it.

What I am trying to understand is the mechanism necessary in order to instill so much hatred that one would plan, contemplate, stalk and hunt down a girl, a child essentially, and shoot her with intent to kill.
What rationale has been put in place to justify that? It would be easy for me to go on an Islamophobic rant but that would be a facile way out....i.e it's "them"....and "we are better"...but it ain't so!
Fanaticism and extreme ideologies are born out of frustration and discontent, a fertile ground to spawn this kind of tragedy.
Would you and I ever be capable of something like that? I would hope not but we are lucky to have been born into circumstances that do not provide an excuse to resort to such inhumane acts.
We, as a western society have perpetrated equally atrocious acts..The fire bombing of Hamburg and Dresden...the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan....the gassing and summary execution of "enemies of the state" both in Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union, Pol Pot in Cambodia , The Christmas bombing of Hanoi etc,.....I think you get the drift....
We are witnessing a clash of cultures like never before. The internet and social media have opened up the world . Knowledge is no longer the privilege of the ruling elite.
This girl was blogging about getting an education and one day becoming a lawyer.
Radical Islam cannot tolerate this. One can postulate as long as they want about how the majority of Muslims are hard working, peace loving folks....and that is true, but, at it's core, in it's essence...Islam is patriarchal and rigid. Christainity used to be just as archaic but with the reformation and internal turmoil it has softened and by necessity has allowed a culture of "perceived" tolerance . This shift in thinking has not happened in Islam and it won't in the foreseeable future.

You or I are (we both like to believe) certainly not capable of such atrocities but then we pick up the paper and read about the "Hannibal Lecters" of our society.
The nice guy next door.
The difference is the majority of our society shares in that shock and expresses outrage, the evil piece of dirt is perused and punished.
The day that I see peaceful Muslims take to the streets in large numbers protesting this type of behavior is the day I will start to believe there may be a difference.
statusquo 10/12/2012 9:03:39 PM ReportFly,
With all due respect, but did you read what I posted?
statusquo 10/12/2012 9:06:30 PM ReportMallet,
You're lucky Guenther Of The Apes is too busy peeling bananas or he'll descent upon you like Adolf on the Sudetenland.

Not one of those assassins were a Christian.
You're a Christian are you not?
right wing 10/12/2012 9:08:54 PM Reportstatusquo

He's to busy being old and so much wiser......

The truth is we cannot state what the truth really is, political correctness you know, the race card, painting with to broad a brush, intolerance and all that other B.S.
...and make no mistake, it is well known that we are, in the name of representing all that is "good", defeating ourselves.
statusquo 10/12/2012 9:14:10 PM ReportGeez rw,
Never thought that would ever happen...you and me ganging up on dearly beloved ole Fly.....
He was probably smirking like good ole Joe Biden when he posted that.
(big...really big smiley face)
flyhawk25 10/12/2012 9:17:26 PM Reportright wing...not Christians?
What were they - Democrats?
And what I believe is the stuff of tomorrow but tonight more important things beckon.
Baseball.
right wing 10/12/2012 9:23:39 PM Reportflyhawk25
No.
Two were communist.
One, no set religious denomination.
The other, not really proven to have been the assassin and was an atheist.
You figure out who belongs where as you are the all knowing wise old owl.

I get my butt gang kicked around enough on here, what makes him exclusive?
;)
right wing 10/12/2012 9:27:23 PM Report...and by the way, one was a card carrying democrat.
steelworker 10/12/2012 9:42:40 PM ReportYou can polish a turd all day long but at the end of the day it's still a turd.
Wisenheimer 10/12/2012 10:08:29 PM ReportFlyhawk25 ... I believe Oswald was a communist
useful idiot and Sirhan Sirhan a muslim. You weren't a history teacher I'm guessing.
right wing 10/12/2012 10:12:48 PM ReportAwwww....you're helping out the "teacher" Wisen.
Don't you know that they were all Christians.
statusquo 10/12/2012 10:31:40 PM ReportWisenheimer,
With all due respect but you're over your head and beyond your depth,...keep quoting stock prices or join Jean Paul and quack me a river...
(smiley face)
In other words ....you're an idiot!
Having said that and on second thought....you're an idiot!
I can't put a finger on it as to the why you're an idiot and I can't provide facts why I came to that conclusion but reading your monosyllabic, inane posts I can't think of an alternative conclusion.
ruptured spleen 10/12/2012 11:59:38 PM Reportrw
In Canada that perv would have probably got 30 months...if the judge was having a bad day...sad...
I like the sentences in the USA...
Cashmier 10/13/2012 1:04:53 AM Reportrw - just to clarify, I am basing my comments on the MANY statements made by Romney regarding international relations, stability in the Middle East, and his desire for a strong military lead me to conclude that he wishes to increase military activity. Which, again confuses me because that negates any attempts to improve the economy. Ryan's comment only served as a reinforcement to my previous observations - and a little memory jogger.
Spellchecker 10/13/2012 9:33:35 AM ReportFlyhawk is confusing nominal Christians with real Christians.
Statusquo is waiting for the human race to evolve. He'll see it evolve into something worse before it finally does get better, and now the EU receives the Nobel Peace Prize. Such irony, first Yasser Arafat, then Barack Obama, and now the European Union, the embryo of Germany's forthcoming empire.
LOL
Sorry status, but I just have to laugh out loud on that one, but here's a smiley face for you.
:)
