Watching CNN this morning that the reports that came out from the attacks on the embacy were false on how things went down...then they jump to how polls are not accurate and mislead the public. Amazing how upset the super dem reporter is that the pols now favour Romney!
Best part is how positive he is that Biden will wipe the floor with Ryan.
Same guy last week predicted the One was going to dominate the debate!

statusquo 10/10/2012 7:50:28 AM Report

I would think that this old/new then new again catch phrase "wiping the floor" is getting a little stale.

As for the accuracy of it springing back into the public vernacular I really don't think Romney wiped anything other than the unmentionable on the debate I watched last week.

Granted, Obama looked tired and annoyed , but then again, who wouldn't be?
Romney "looked" good, smiled a lot and last but not least looked into the camera more often. Well rehearsed , superficial gestures no doubt drilled into him ad nauseam.
But if one did really....I mean "really" listen to what Romney was actually saying, i.e
empty words and promising that he will talk to people. The weaseling out of countering Obama when trying to explain the similarities of healthcare in Massachusetts and "Obama Care"..etc.

On Afghanistan and the Middle East, he said in one of his speeches, "I will evaluate conditions on the ground and weigh the best advice of our military commanders." ( Now that is a mouth-full of nothing!)
Ergo with naming tax loopholes and deductions he would eliminate, but he won't tell you an actual plan, but here again....he will "talk" to people.

I can't wait for the next debate on foreign policy. No doubt he will smile plenty and proclaim that water is wet. And the neo cons will lap it up.
Romney will cut domestic spending to the bone, give tax cuts to millionaires, and raise military spending . How that plan will balance the budget, well...he will talk to people.....
Cutting spending on infrastructure or education is "socialism" but giving billions worth of defense contracts to Northrop Grumman or General Dynamics is good ole' American corporate welfare and if the debt goes further in the tank that'd be called "forward thinking" and dare I say.... "Reaganesque" .

Grace: Predictions on U.S. Presidential election

It will either be won by Obama or Romney

OR

To put it another way it will be won by The "One" or "The other one"

The loser will suggest that there was something crooked about the result.

Rush Limbaugh or Chris Mathews will have their head explode, depending on the result.

The day after election the sun will rise in the east and set in the west just as it has been wont* to do since the beginning of time.

RLE will post final predictions on Nov. 7th

Finally, perhaps the level of civility will increase on this site

Talk about your re-gifting.... Obama is saying the exact same words he said four years ago, only adding that he needs four more years.
I did listen to the debate very carefully.
Is Romney going to wave a magic wand, no, but I put more stock in his ability to turn the economy around based on his experience and record than Mr. give me four more years.
Right Winger 10/10/2012 9:02:34 AM Report

Sesameas Street has told Obama to leave them out of his ads.

Obama's presidency and campaign focus too much on social programs and not on the economy. Good thing if he gets re-elected since more an more people will need his social programs as jobs disappear. Then he can spend another 4 years ignoring the economy. Pity the person who would have to clean up that scary mess. Heck the 4 years will be bad enough for Romney to clean up.

right wing...I hate to pee on your pumps but the US economy is improving.
The president can only propose fiscal plans. The House and Senate enact.
The president does have a more direct influence on foreign policy but still needs co-operation for funding unless the money is in the budget.
I think Obama's biggest failure is his fixation with being The Great Conciliator.
Abe Lincoln pulled that one off but as much as the president admires Honest Abe he ain't him.

maryanne 10/10/2012 9:40:31 AM Report

I watched the segment on the cut of funding for welfare recipients at last night's council meeting with utter disgust. Not because of the funding cut, but because of the rudeness of the mayor towards Councillor Frank Fata and her unsympathetic attitude towards landlords. She has been the worst mayor that this city has ever had and I surely hope that this is her last term as mayor.
Councillor Fata spoke on behalf of landlords who are the REAL victims of a lot of welfare recipients. These very victims who Mayor Amoroso has no sympathy for are the very people who are paying the taxes to pay for her wages and the wages of the rest of council. These victims are ACTUALLY contributing to society unlike welfare recipients.
I have seen first hand how these PROTECTED welfare recipients have damaged and trashed houses, not paid rent, how landlords have not been able to evict them without paying a lot of money going through the tribunal system which cost a lot of money, and a lot of paperwork, having to hire lawyers, having to take time off to attend the tribunal, spend thousands of dollars to make repairs to their damaged properties and never getting a cent back for damages, unpaid rent, lost wages, legal fees, filing fees for eviction, sheriff's fees, etc. Why doesn't the system pay these hard working, tax paying landlords? There are very few truly vulnerable welfare recipents, very few disabled welfare recipients who are unable to earn a wage, in comparison to the overall number of these dishonest and unlawful citizens who we should be ashamed of having in this community.
The real victims are the Landlords!
I have seen these welfare recipients have their liquor and beer delivered to their door, they have been able to have a few pets who they have to feed, smoke a pack a day, yet they have no money to pay their rent.
After getting evicted from one house, they start all over again at the next -not paying their rent, damaging the property, etc. They know the broken system, and how well it works for them.
The only councillor who is speaking the truth and has the GUTS to speak is Councillor Frank Fata and I commend him for this. Mayor Amoroso has no right to try stopping this passionate Councillor from telling citizens of this city what is really going on and who their hard working tax dollars are going to.
Yes, Councillor Fata is absolutely correct - IT IS A BROKEN SYSTEM, and throwing our hard earned money is not the answer. Perhaps this is the reason why the Provincial Government is cutting the funds. I hope that this government comes up with the answer to get these people off our payroll and actually FORCE them to contribute to society - the society of taxpayers like hard working, tax paying, contributing people like landlords who have worked hard in order to afford to have a rental property and pay their taxes!!

The lefties here are still in shock that Obama had an 'emperor has no clothes moment' in that debate that's a week old! They just can't let it go. The lefties on MSNBCLSD are gone overboard with the yelling and ranting about the debate. Funny!

Obama showed America just how cool he is - he can be an empty suit and still have no clothes. Magical!

AND

That stupid Big Bird attack ad from the WH is priceless. I hope they never take it down, it shows how out of touch and silly Obama really is.

Did I mention that Romney is now leading in Ohio, with PA, WI and MI now in play?

Bye bye Bobo...

Just Curious 10/10/2012 9:56:25 AM Report

Judging from maryanne's response you would have to assume she is a landlord.
Granted there are a fair amount of losers on the dole but to paint them all that way as Frank did is unfair to the extreme.Frank to often just opens his mouth and lets out a lot of hot air without any real thought behind it.Landlords are out to make money, period, and to judge by the high rents in a low income town, are doing quite well at it. When I moved out of my apartment to move south the rent went up $300 without even a paint job. Yeah, my heart pumps P!#@ for landlords...:)
maryanne 10/10/2012 10:34:15 AM Report

Just Curious,
I am not a landlord and do not desire to be one. I have friends who are landlords and hear their frustrations all the time.
They tell me that after paying taxes, eviction fees, no rent for months, there is no money in rentals. Only when you get decent people renting, do you make money. Decent people who want to rent in this community are hard to come by. Many landlords have put their rentals up for sale because of these welfare recipients who are protected by our broken system.
I don't paint all welfare recipients with the same brush, but I can tell you that the majority can be painted with the same brush.
Councillor Fata knows what he is talking about and is passionate about this community and trying to make it a better place for all, especially honest, law abiding people.
I wish that all councillors were like him. This would be a better community.

Sorry can’t agree with your trend of thinking, otherwise why have any lock up facilities. Nobody said it doesn’t cost more to have a safer society. Having said that, we ..the non criminals, want and deserve a safer society, and if it costs more then we have to deal with it. We will always have crime, that goes without saying, but we have to try and deter crime in general, if you can stop it at the onset, then we may have some positive results in the future. We do pay more if there is crime, anyway eg: higher insurance costs, and if you were ever a victim you have money out of your own pockets to, repair or replace etc or what ever. Just saying, crime can’t be left unchecked and there has to be repercussions for those who want to break the laws, otherwise there would be anarchy.

A question was asked last night at City Council to the Commissioner of Social Services, Kim Streich-Poser, as to her thoughts on how many Saultites in the City might be part of the working poor. She had no answer. I would hazard a guess and say that it is, at least, twice as many as are on welfare & ODSP, and perhaps more (over 20%). But these people continue working, raising their family the best they can, but, accomplishing this without a welfare cheque coming in every week. These working poor are true victims of the system and of our unstable economy.

Now, I agree that everyone on welfare is not a lazy, good for nothing person, avoiding work at all costs. But many are and they abuse the system we currently have very, very well, and in some cases, for many years. And why can they do it; because the system we have allows them to. There is not enough accountability for the recipients' actions and in-actions.

Now, in another situation, a person collecting EI has a specified period that he can collect and then he's kicked off. But, these people worked and paid into it, to receive EI and then they're told their time is up and they're done. Welfare has the luxury of not having these stringent rules. Maybe it's time it did.

Welfare is a broken system. It can't continue on its current path. The welfare staff that dole out the taxpayers' dollars work with the system that pays them a very good salary. I don't think they will play a big part in solving the problem though they apparently have employment counsellors working closely with the employable, welfare recipients, trying to get them off the system.

Taxpayers have to start getting involved. Call the welfare hotline if you know someone who is scamming the system. They are out there, such as those collecting a welfare cheque and working at jobs for cash money. Combine the two income sources and they live better than, at least, the working poor. I've also been told that vacant homes and apartments are, allegedly, being used, fraudulently, as drop off points for welfare cheques. If this is true, there should be "zero" tolerance for this. Most definitely, zero tolerance !!!

Landlords also have to deal with welfare recipients and they have many horror stories that they can share with you. Non-payment of rent, sometimes in the thousands of dollars, damage to the residence is very common, paying for eviction procedures and finally paying thousands to repair the apartments and homes. Then we complain that there isn't enough affordable housing in this City.

Yes, I strongly believe the system is broken, but, unfortunately, more time and energy is spent trying to bend over backwards to find the money from various sources, such as the United Way, then there is to try and get the able-bodied and fraudulent welfare recipients off the system and into the world of self-sufficiency.

theprotector 10/10/2012 2:29:03 PM Report

thats my point tfinn, deterrance, we have none, penalties do not deter. all too often we simply treat the symtoms of a problem and not the root cause. Granted some people you just cant fix and they should be sent away for a long time. Minimum manditory sentences do nothing but cost money. This is what brough Californa and Texas close to bankrupcy was the 3 strikes your out rule. Remember the maxium sentence for a home break in is life in prison. Look that the home break ins we have. We cannot afford to build enough prisons if your goal is solely based on punitive action. We need to look closer at restorative justice and socail causes to crime. Not the bablonian eye for an eye.
cathyh 10/10/2012 2:40:38 PM Report

It's quite clear to me from reading your posts about the welfare system that not one of you has the answer. The politicians and the people who create the laws are a mirror image of all of you. There is no affordable answer. After saying that I do believe that our system of welfare, even with the cheats, beats the countries that have no welfare systems. Look at cities in Africa, India, Mexico, etc., where all the down and outers are on the streets begging. I certainly wouldn't like to see that in our city.

TankGirl 10/10/2012 6:59:42 PM Report

You can't paint all landlords with the same brush much the same as you can't paint all tenants with the same brush. There is good/bad in everything.

There are also so many variables with rentals that you can't assume when a landlord raises rent when one tenant leaves means they are ripping people off. For example, if that Appartment is all inclusive that landlord is commited regardless of increasing electricity/gas bills for the length of stay with that lease to the agreed rental price. They cannot pass that expense onto the tenant more than a rental raise of somewhere around 2%yr. This is one example of many.

Yes it is. One never knows when the next bus is heading for you.
But one must look good and project confidence whilst going through the travails of life.
Having said that...I just watched something on TV about looking good on a budget.
The reoccurring word is "moisturizing".
I've struggled for years to keep my skin properly hydrated.
Apparently, allowing coconut milk to dry out and using the remaining goo , "shmearing" it liberally on your facial skin and scrotum will "smoothify" and assuage the wrinkles and other imperfections accumulated over a life of disappointments and setbacks.
Life is a struggle indeed, the least you can do is going at it with style and properly taking care of your skin.
Exfoliating is fine, but if you don't moisturize properly your efforts will be in vain.
Also, and I can't stress enough ...

Flu shot , hmmmmmmm

Lets take a look at the ingredients of a flu shot:

Formaldehyde ......... cancer causing

Polysorbate 80........ can cause severe nonimmunologic anaphylactoid reactions

Hydrocortisone...... a medication that is not to be taken internally........

Gentamicin sulfate......... Serious adverse effects are nephrotoxicity, auditory or vestibular ototoxicity, impairment of neuromuscular transmission, and hypersensitivity reactions. Neuromuscular blockade and respiratory paralysis have occurred after administration.

Mercury.......... Mercury is the second most poisonous element known to man and studies have shown that neurons begin to disintegrate in its presence. Some of the most serious side effects of mercury are liver disorders, injury to the cardiovascular system and hematopoietic system, deafness and ataxia.

Flu shots also cause Guillain-Barré syndrome........... which is very prevalent here in the sault. My cousin got it after a flu shot........... destroys the coating on your nerves and can cause paralysis.

lets get that flu shot !

Try eating a natural ph balanced diet, there will be no need for flu shots..... and no GMO foods ( which is under huge scrutiny right now ) Testing has shown that if bugs eat GMO foods their bellies explode, but yeah, lets eat that !

Shingles Vaccine

The shingles vaccine temporarily "protects" about half of those vaccinated (CDC, 2011). No one knows how long the "benefits" of the vaccine will last, and each Zostavax shingle vaccination contains a litany of additives including MSG and aborted fetal cells and DNA, among things. Shingles cases result in three times as many deaths and five times the number of hospitalizations as chicken pox

MSG .......... Monosodium glutamate is known to cause a long list of side effects and health problems. Here are some to watch out for:

Allergic reactions
Alzheimer's disease
Asthma attacks
Burning, numbness, or tingling in or around your mouth
Brain damage
Cancer
Chest pain
Confusion
Damage to your unborn child
Death due to an MSG reaction
Diarrhea
Eye inflammation
Flushing
Free radical damage to your blood vessels (this can lead to a heart attack or a stroke)
Headaches (including migraine headaches)
Heart disease
Memory loss
Nausea
Pressure or tightness in the muscles in your face
Fertility problems (for both men and women)
Rapid, fluttering heartbeats
Seizures
Shortness of breath
Stuttering or speech problems
Sweating
Swelling of the brain (brain edema)
Type 2 diabetes
Weakness
Weight gain (the weight you gain from eating MSG is very difficult to lose)

Yup, lets get that "shingles shot" !

Do the research folks, these medications/vaccinations cause all kinds of side effects and deaths and disabilities. Eat right, get off the processed foods and you'll have no need of those shots

Lots of theories Stats, the cut hunter theory,etc.etc.

Many , many vaccines are linked to autism which is becoming highly prevalent .

What about the Gardasil vaccine which has killed and disabled and deformed many young women .........
Brianne 10/10/2012 10:17:07 PM Report

woops posted too soon.

over 10,000 young women have had adverse affects of the gardasil vaccine for HPV, now they want to give it to young men ? How many of those young men will die or become sterile or disabled from this vaccine?

Brianne,

Not sure about Gardasil....but let's take a look at ADSD and Methylphenidate aka Ritalin.
An invented condition with a convenient solution.
Diagnose the kids with dubious parameters and rake in the dough.

Yup, all the while it causes weak bone density, and easy bone breakage. Let alone the damage it does to the brain and central nervous system. It is classified in the "cocaine family"

Makes the "War on Drugs" postulated by Reagan and Bush sorta laughable....doesn't it?

As the saying goes:

Medicine is not health care.... Food is healthcare. Medicine is sick care. Let's all get this straight, for a "change".

Another quote that hits home too

I don't understand when we destroy something created by man, we call it " vandalism:, but when we destroy something created by mother nature we call it "progress"

Sorry Brianne, but this old guy is gonna get his flu shot, too many snotty nosed little grandkids and their friends running about to want to get laid low by a flu bug. I agree that prehaps some new drug/vaccines are not exactly what they claim to do, but it has been said many times before that the cure is sometimes worse than the malady. However if you beleive everything that is said then you would not take any asprin, insulin, you name it for the fear it may harm you, and if you take this to the logical conclusion you would not get out of bed for fear of tripping down the stairs, going outside and being struck by lightning, crossing the street and being struck by a mac truck, or being shot by the jealous wife of a former boyfriend. Any of these things could happen, but they don't in a normal lifetime, live dangerously, get a flu shot, don't trip down the stairs, look both ways before crossing the street....
Brianne 10/10/2012 10:58:18 PM Report

bahhhhhhhhhh, i've never had the flu shot and i work with the public on a daily basis. Have I gotten colds and flu, yep.

The choice is yours grump, if you have a predisposition to pneumonia, etc. yah, i'd get it, but if you are perfectly ( as well as can be) stay away from the flu shot. It's not a necessity for normal healthy people........ really.......... until the day comes along that the anti viral resistant bugs come along, then what. We are creating our own demise.

Am I a fear monger? No

I just don't believe in taking something that is going to do worse for me than good. My antibodies will be strong and able to fight off the flu. :P
