Good morning everyone.
Back to the old grind today after a week or so of holidays.....sigh.
For those students (including my youngest daughter) and teachers starting back at school, best wishes for a successful year. To my oldest, who is starting her Clerkship at SAH today...they'll love you so don't worry.
To all those parents out there...congratulations, you made it through another summer. Welcome back to The Routine.
For those of you following, my two refugee sons are adapting quite well. They start university and college this week. If they apply the work ethic they have demonstrated around my home, I expect they will be very successful.
Some minor bumps in the road regarding their diet, as neither is used to what they call 'fridge food'. They find our food has no taste, and blame it on keeping it cold all the time. I chalk it up to our mass produced meat and veggies, versus their home grown stuff.
They like pasta so what else do they need, right ?
So far the Soo has been very good to them, lots of friendly, helpful people. Only a few incidents of what I saw as 'racism', but they didn't catch on (so I didn't tell them)
I like that they call me Dad and introduce me as such to their friends.
I'm taking them to the Greyhound game on Thursday to introduce them to the Canadian game.

I am all for giving the seperatists a little "shove"...to MAKE them go. If they think they can do better without Canada so be it. However...I do not want to see any Canadian tax dollars being doled out to a province that decided they can do better on their own. You make your bed...you .lie in it.

In reading through the treason laws there are a couple of areas that could be viewed as treason by the separatist leaders.

I agree, let them seperate and give them nothing in return, no say in how the country is run, no military no NOTHING. Their own arrogance with be their downfall or the join the US which I feel they will fit in nicely.

Jimssm If you want to perk up their appetite then rice is a must. Various hot sauces will take care of the rest. Any meat or veggies thrown in will taste just as it should for them. One word of caution, don't dive into this yourself until you get climatized. After spending years in the Middle East you adjust first and then enjoy so give them what they like.

I think any talk of charging people with treason is ridiculous.
Nobody forced any province to join confederation, so nobody can force them to stay, either.
And any discussion about how easy it would be, or how much better Canada (or Quebec) would be apart is shortsighted at best.

Quebec separating - this is very much like a divorce and we all know the courts are choked up to the brim with couples who don't know how to process their anger in a healthy mature fashion. I am sincere when I say let them go and wish them well. What do you gain by trying to kick the crap out of them for standing up and saying this is not working. Stop trying to bribe them into staying. Try making a great neighbour out of them. Trying them for treason - jeez that's a good first step? Do you really want to be in a relationship where one of the parties is held captive, too many marriages like that today. Quebec wants what we have not to give - If they wish a separate distinct society then after a period of time maybe we can come over for Sunday dinner?

It would be terrible if quebec separated from CANADA.Mostly for quebec.They would inherit their share of the debt and they would loose alot of business.Good points,if quebec seperated then CANADA wouldn't have to be bilingual.That would be great news for many Canadians who can't get jobs because they are ENGLISH,despite their unniversity educations.It's time quebec grew up and became a part of the world.Will Montreal ever become a world city? Not with the separatists 18th century mentality of preserving culture,their culture and not accepting others.I think if quebec has another referendum,the rest of CANADA should also have a referendum with a clear question that would ask if the rest of CANADA wants quebec to stay or not.One more thing.If quebec did separate it wouldn't look like it does now on the map.Would natives want to separate?Would different regions want to as well? All of this is a fun exercise but it's like your child threatening to run away from home.
The rest of the family wouldn't let that happen and we won't either.
Eventually we are all back together.
Read 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Max came back - and his supper was still waiting.
In spite of the wild things yelling, "Oh please don't go. We love you so."
In the end we all recognize that we need Max - and Quebec - for our family to be complete.
In both languages and cultures.
All of this is a fun exercise but it's like your child threatening to run away from home.

If Quebec ever separated they (the politicians and bureaucrats) would simply declare they owe nothing, to anyone. They probably already say this now.
In fact, the promoters of separation would probably declare the rest of Canada owes them a few billions before they part.

Does Quebec not draw more in funding from the government of Canada than it pays back in taxes. I'm sure the USA or any other nation would not want to take them on. They sure would leave the rest of the country a lot of money if they separated lol
Do not the native community "own" most of QUebec, and would they not take back their land.
How would they be able to support themselves ? I know I certainly wouldn't want tax dollars to go to them if they wanted to leave Canada. Maybe we should just kick them out of the "union" if they want to separate that badly...... then watch the influx of " movers" out of that province !
I say let them go, and peace be with them, but don't count on our support, for you are not wanting to be a part of "us". You want to leave, then do it, carry on on your own......... see how long it will be before you are seeking help from another nation.

I know that Quebecers (Eastern Townships) feel they will still keep the Canadian Milk and egg quotos if and when they seperate and of course they think they will also keep the Canadian currency. There are so many silly ideas concerning this subject that when they are facing the reality of it it won't happen. They might as well roll up the pavement in Montreal and Quebec City if it ever happened.

Also...remember the polls in the Alberta Election..things aren't always as they seem or reported.
There is always a large undecided, undeclared vote that can sway elections.

I always thought that Quebec separation would be inevitable due to the volatility of Quebec voters and the changing demographics of Older Federalists versus younger separatists.
Older Quebeckers who experienced the depression and World War Two were more likely to have a committment to Federalism and Canada. In Quebec they use to say that every day a separatist is born and a federalist passes away.
The idea of Quebec separation will never go away. It sits there like an active land mine waiting for the right political catalysts to ignite its fury. Those catalysts include fear of cultural assimilation,economic downturns and disdain for federal initiatives or lack of federal funding to feed Quebec interests.
A PQ minority or majority will be the first spark to igniting the separatist agenda. PQ demands to Ottawa may fall on deaf ears as Harper only has 5 MPS in the province of Quebec.There is already existing disdain for Harper and the PCs already in Quebec. The PQ party cannot lose as they either reap the benefit of their demands to Ottawa or they fuel the separatist cause when Ottawa refuses to cave into their demands.
Quebeckers are running out of political options thus making the land mine of separation a casualty of the perfect storm that is starting to now brew.
The current PQ leadership want to implement an immigration policy that would take an uneducated unskilled worker from Haiti than an educated well skilled immigrant from India for the Haitian speaks French. Choosing immigrants on the basis of language skills rather than brain power and ability will not prepare Quebec for its future whether it be in Canada or as their own country.
The Harper/PQ relationship will be interesting to watch. A political storm that may provide the catalysts for another separation referundum where Canadians outside of Quebec sit powerless as Quebeckers again affect their future.
I always thought that Quebec separation would be inevitable due to the volatility of Quebec voters and the changing demographics of Older Federalists versus younger separatists.
Older Quebeckers who experienced the depression and World War Two were more likely to have a committment to Federalism and Canada. In Quebec they use to say that every day a separatist is born and a federalist passes away.
The idea of Quebec separation will never go away. It sits there like an active land mine waiting for the right political catalysts to ignite its fury. Those catalysts include fear of cultural assimilation,economic downturns and disdain for federal initiatives or lack of federal funding to feed Quebec interests.
A PQ minority or majority will be the first spark to igniting the separatist agenda. PQ demands to Ottawa may fall on deaf ears as Harper only has 5 MPS in the province of Quebec.There is already existing disdain for Harper and the PCs already in Quebec. The PQ party cannot lose as they either reap the benefit of their demands to Ottawa or they fuel the separatist cause when Ottawa refuses to cave into their demands.
Quebeckers are running out of political options thus making the land mine of separation a casualty of the perfect storm that is starting to now brew.

Cathyh......... the usa would step in, create martial law and disband the political system in quebec. The St. Laurence seaway ( shipping) is too critical an area to be left in the hands of a separatist nation.

Most of the land north of the Montreal--Quebec City corridor belongs to the First Nations---That's where most of the Hydro Electric dams are and the First Nations are not likely to give up their land. So without the First Nation people on board Quebec cannot survive as a Nation.
I don't think that most Quebecers even realize what might happen if they leave Canada--they are being fed a lot of bull by the P.Q. Government.

Cathyh I was not trying to be funny, getting along with Quebec or any other province requires an emotional maturity that I don't see. The result will not be chaos, just different. Your life journey will not be affected drastically. My children will continue to speak french and I will still drive by montreal on my way to the east coast. Ask the Russians if they survived their family re-organization.

Fear not! Quebec will not separate. The vote is anti-Charest, not pro-PQ. Marois is a racist (witness her plans to stop religious signs in public ... except Christian ones) Steelworker is right in his depiction. As soon as the old guard is gotten rid of (if it is), the young will rejoice, but the young are too cosmopolitan to pursue the separation thing. The majority of the people in Quebec do not want to separate. The NDP have the chance for a fertile ground to sow!

Hey bonjour,I was born and raised there ,you people know nothing of french culture let alone politics.You are all quaking for nothing.Had to be there when bombs where going off,and Trudeau was the bonehead who sent in the army..Dont guess what is going on, get the facts of living under British rule and understand the peer pressure.I would love for all you to leave Canada and leave the the country to us.We founded most of it.So hit the road and dont look back as there is no trees in your road or hooks in your butt.

Regarding Pink Ps Problem last week,I was out at camp,where we have a small hot Water tank under the kitchen counter, Plugged into the stove. It is 110 volts 15amp fuse,. the tank is Ok. for our needs. sorry I am a week late.

It's interesting to note that the Libs in Quebec and the CAQ have 30% and 27% respectively of the votes, which translates into 47 and 18 seats. We really do have to find a new system of democracy!

Proportional Representation is all very well and good, however the one drawback to that is that the "reserve list" of people to go into the "proportion" could be made up of losing candidates, which would in theory give someone two bites of the apple/cherry so to speak. Would you really want a losing candidate to sit for you?? The first past the post has worked reasonably well for many years, why would you want to tinker with it?
