Good morning everyone, have a great day. See that is what happens when all you old folks stay up too late blogging. You can't haul your old butts out of the sack in the morning. I believe the work ethic is going to be a rude awakening to many but times are changing and I see that happening. Unions are on the decline mainly due to greed and electing and keeping mostly poor leadership. Business is struggling in the Global economy so all in all it's not shaping up for pretty. That said I hope everyone is having a great Labour Day Weekend. Stay safe

Good Morning All: I thought perhaps we could think about the current poll on Sootoday. Should safety measures such as this be regulated by law? Having such law would require enforcement. Do our law enforcement officers have too little to do? In the same vein, I think I read recently that Michigan did away with the requirement of safety helmets for motorcyclists. Is this an effort to clorinate the gene pool, or is it an effort to raise the number of organ donors?

I just checked the National Debt clock and Flaterty and The Strong Hand On The Economy have now run our debt up over 590 Billion. Mind you they have paid a couple of dollars off the deficit which by the way is still rising. Just keep those rose coloured glasses polished. I'll stand by for the Harperites to produce reams of B.S. excuses. LMAO

gcubed, good morning. I rode up to about 5 years ago and I'm not sure if it was old age, lack of time or finally a few brains that made me quit. I don't know what the official thinking is but helmets save the skull but generally break the neck in an accident. One way is death the other is crippled so it's not much of a choice for the rider but a pretty clear choice for the Health Care system that is struggling with increasing costs. Riding is a great thrill but as with extreme sports the risks are high. Say hello to the boss and have a great day.

Grace you sound like a nice young lady. That said get a ******* life. After what G.W. did to the States I'm surprised that the folks didn't rise up and lynch the whole damn crew. Now we have another bunch of pampered PR's who got rich on daddy's money and now want a title to put on their resume. Then they can sit on some high tone, high paying board and really screw the little guy royally. What America doesn't need is another 4 to 8 years of these selfish ,money grubbing morons. Now you have a nice day.

Grace I agree they are not the same person. (wow that's a surprise). They came up on daddy's money and priviledge and are cut from the same cloth. Yes Mitt is more personable and brighter which probably makes him a lot more dangerous. The greatest Country in the world (former) and this party wouldn't do squat for their own average Citizens. Grace please explain to me how anyone could support this crew.

a.Slowed down the recession. Nobody is talking depression anymore, and some are talking recovery.
b.Saved Wall Street. And Wall Street tried to punk him by paying itself first. In addition,he exposed the absence of regulatory oversight on Wall Street.
c.Prevented the collapse of the American automotive industry.
d.Got America out of Iraq after a loss of thousands of American lives and a realization that G.W. lied about weapons of mass destruction.
Also worthy of note President Obama got rid of Bin Laden which Georgy Porgy only talked about and Romney has criticized
e.Relaxed Anti-American tensions throughout the world.
f.Closed the prisoner “torture camp” at Guantanamo Bay. Holding prisoners for eight years without charging them was acceptable under the previous administration. It is not acceptable under this administration.
g.Made the environment a national priority, and a primary source for job creation.
h.Made education a national priority
i.Passed universal health care, with a public option, to insure everybody in America has care when they are sick. He’s did it, despite vilification of ideologues and vested interests. j.President Obama has restored credibility to the American Presidency

Well fellows I'm not here to debate all these issues but I can tell you that he has scaled down the risk of a major terrorist attack. The fact that he has gone anywhere he wanted and sucessfully targeted terrorist leaders will put a stop to most of this. These leaders now know that they will be held responsible and pay the price. This is really unlike G.W. grounding all airplanes over North America so he could fly the Bin Laden family home. Sheesh what a sweet guy but sweet never got it done.

While you people are exercising over who makes it into the White House for the next four years there are a few things here that warrant your attention. Our financial sector is a mature industry. Profit increases such as reported this past week are more appropriate to the junior mining outfits. Canada's largest bank enjoyed a profit increase of 70% in the latest quarter. That's seventy percent for goodness sake! That at a time when the economy as a whole grew by less than 2%. Canada's financial regulators need to realize that this industry needs some competition. Let's get some foreign banks in here and soon.
Profits are fine and dandy but that is ridiculous. Incidentally, the last I heard from my bank was to advise me of a whole litany of fee increases.

I have never wrote that I think that Obama is some hero, but he was handicapped from the beginning. Two wars, a housing crisis brought on by Wall Street scam artists(who are still controlling the reins), bank failures, an automotive industry self imploding, Republicans who were and still control both the House and the Senate(re-writing or defeating any large piece of legislation) and having to implement the Bush tax cuts. He has done a "B" job in the three years. Besides, knowing how the US Government works, it is surprising if anything can get done. Partisanship is at an all time high and everything, including committees, sub-committees, and the judiciary fall along party ideology.

As a socialist democracy we Canadians exist with two contradictory and competing concepts, both of which are necessary. We have capitalism, whose function is to increase profit for its owner(s). We have socialism whose function, very simply put, is to spread around the largess as evenly as possible among the populace. They exist with an uneasy tension between them.
Personally, I think this is a workable ideal. At least nothing better comes to mind. It does present though, an eternal dichotomy. Owners believe, with some justification, that as owners the profit belongs to them. If we didn't have owners taking risks and trying to make a profit there wouldn't be businesses. When something tends to cut their profits they believe that this is unfair.
Socialists, (read union workers,) believe they need to be rewarded more fairly because without them to do the work the owners would not be able to make the product(s) that produce the profits. They believe not receiving more of the profit is unfair.
Unions and owners will always believe the other side is demanding too much of what they themselves should rightly have. It is important to realize that they will never strike a perfect balance. There will never be a perfect contract. Owners will always believe that workers have and demand too much. Workers will always believe that they are not receiving their fair share. There will never be a perfect balance.
So what?
Conservatives will side with industrialists. Liberals will side with labour. The balance will always swing back and forth. Each side will always believe the other is unreasonable and of questionable character and virtue.
So what?
We have a democracy so we will vote parties representing different parties in and out as the times seem fit. In good times labour will make gains. In bad times management will take some of those gains back. In really bad times the situation will screw up completely and entire industries or economies will fail.
So what? History will march on, perhaps with a better system, but until then socialistic democracy seems to be the best method we have devised, albeit imperfectly, to try to merge capitalism with social justice for the masses.
So what? We'll all be dust some day anyway.

For the first two years of Obama the Dems controlled both, (and didn't do a thing in terms of a budget that made sense, in fact the Dems - NOT the Republicans - rejected every one of Obama's ideas) currently the Republicans control the House and the Democrats control the Senate.

The Congress is the Legislative Branch. Its main function is to make laws.
The House of Representatives is currently composed of four hundred and thirty-five members.
The Senate and the House are both required to approve legislation before it becomes a law. The two houses are equal in legislative power, but revenue bills (bills relating to taxation) may only originate in the House. However, as with any other bill, the Senate's approval is still required, and the Senate may amend such bills.
While most votes require a simple majority to pass, it sometimes takes three-fifths of senators to bring a bill to a vote.

right wing: I actually hope that Romney wins. I am not a Democrat, but I think that Obama has had an impossible situation to deal with. I try not to subscribe to hysterical extreme media coverage. Romney would do worse, I'm afraid to say. However, I'm still certain that Obama will win and that you will be eating crow!

The almost insurmountable National U.S debt is, by popular belief, blamed on liberal policies and by extension on the democrats. But the charts say it ain't so!
The facts are that the U.S Congress was only Democratic 8 out 20 years, and in those 8 years, on average, Congress passed far leaner budgets than the then Republican presidents were asking for.
Googling a variety of sources for budget charts, under Reagan and the two Bushes one can clearly see the ballooning of the national debt.
Under Ronnie Reagan and Herbie Bush a 3.5 Trillion increase.
But wait...there is more....Doubleya added an additional 6 Trillion!..that is almost 10 Trillion and I haven't even added interest!
Under Clinton the graph line stabilizes a bit but at least it's not going up.
During Doubleya's eight year reign of ineptitude it spikes up drastically.
