In the news, the kids who bullied that school bus monitor recently were just suspended for a year.
Not from the bus but from school.
Amazing.
The school board will provide tutors but they will be isolated from their peers in class and it is their grade eight year.
Short of a public flogging I can't imagine a better sentence.
Finally - a school board with some backbone.

At the risk of being branded a communist - Why do we encourage foreign ownership of our national resources. Can't we develop them on our own. It's not like we won't have customers for the product. It strikes me as ironic that the ring of fire is being developed on First Nations deeded land and we fill them and in at the last minute? I'm proud to be Canadian - Let's stop giving it away. If I see another beautiful Maple log heading over the bridge to be finished I'm going to puke.

Happy Canada day folks - Let's start treating Canadians the way we treat others. I know, let's elect folks to parliament who will truly represent us and not the interest of the money elite. Gawd I love shouting I'm Canadian, let's do Canadian. Wonder if we start another Party? Up with Canucks!

I guess you only look for today's news.. There have been calls for an inquiry into the deaths of two miners at one of Vale (inco) mines in Sudbury for some time.
Oh yes, by the way, I have been waiting to hear of further collapse of the Mall in Elliot Lake, which was going to happen at any moment according to the engineers on site at the rescue/recovery, prehaps Mine Rescue would have been quicker after all..
And don't bother replying, after all I am just blathering, I only had 40 odd years in heavy industry and what would I learn in that time..

Mallet I hope you at least learned to not pay any notice to what we always referred to as "Sidewalk Superintendents" or "Keyboard Commandos" or "Armchair Architects" because BS does not baffle brains contrary to popular belief. Keep that damn beer cold because you never know when Bobby and I are coming around the corner.

RE Dominion Day. I guess while most of the first settlers to Canada were from the UK there were also a lot from France. Since that time many groups have immigated from all over the world. We still have minor ties to Britain but to be fair I believe Camada Day has a better feel to everyone than Dominion Day. I'm sure many will not agree but my family came from the UK and I still think it should stay Canada Day.

We can agree on many topics on this site but the balance of your above post.... you sound like the rooster at sunrise crowing away at nothing.
Did you throw your chest way out as you typed those words?
What does your whatever+ years have to do with rescue and on site engineering expertise is a situation as unique as what happened in Elliot Lake.
That is unless you are going to tell me you are a structural engineer or did any type of rescue for all those years.

When the mall was built in 1979 they never installed a membrane to protect the roof. Mistake. When the current owner purchased the mall he was told to have the mall properly repaired a membrane needed to be installed @ a 1,000,000 cost. Instead it was a patch job, year after year. Even then contractors have been always told to repair the mall the cheapest way possible. In fact no local contractor wanted to work there fearing their safety.
So here it is many years later, a disaster waiting, which did happen.

In my defense....I was the only poster mentioning Canadian Ryder Hesjedal when he won the Giro d'Italia.

what baffles me is how this mall passed the inspection.
Maybe the structural damage was hidden, maybe the inspector wasn't thorough...maybe this, maybe that.
Reading through various blogs I came across several mentions of the Gardiner Express Way waiting for a disaster to happen and various Montreal bridges in disrepair .

Why would that be Un-Canadian? I am a limey and I shall be watching the team that beat England, not going to say if I will be rooting for them, but I do know more Italians than Spaniards. I have to be honest they beat the German team well, and there are a lot of German cottagers out here now. All I hope for is a good clean game without "niggling tackles" and after that I just hope the best team wins, just wish it could have been England involved,Ah maybe next time....
