Not to get technical on ya but if you had bothered to read through Wikki you would have found that they also state that "dry rot" or "true dry rot" although a widely used term has no scientific evidence that it exists.
The name "dry rot" is a misnomer as wood decaying fungi will only flourish in moist environments.
Moisture must be present for the fungi to develop and exist.
Spellchecker 6/25/2012 8:57:53 AM ReportOn the subject of dry rot, I was led (note the correct spelling of the word LED) to believe it occurs when a wooden boat is stored in an unventilated area.
Another spelling reminder seems to be in order these days as some of my former spelling class students are falling back into their earlier habits.
The contraction for YOU ARE is YOU'RE.
YOUR denotes possession, as in YOUR book, or YOUR boat, or YOUR recidivism into poor spelling habits.

The term dry rot has a long history and can be traced back to sailing ships.
It is a misnomer as the fungi needs moisture to form.
That is why it is most commonly found on wood that is touching the ground, has little or no ventilation or in wet damp areas.
Spellchecker 6/25/2012 9:28:10 AM ReportSo there we are, no ventilation would cause the buildup of mosture which would attract the fungi which would cause the rot. Hence, no such thing as dry rot, a euphemism in fact, for moist rot.

Does not matter the topic, somebody will bitch about it.
I have been following the Elliot Lake mall nightmare, it has made national news sources.
I was going to post on it a couple of times but the words that I thought might be appropriate somehow did not seem enough for what they are experiencing in that small town.
The mall roof had been inspected by an "engineer" a month ago and deemed safe.
Hope his liability insurance is paid up, he/she is going to need it.
It is also clear why they waited for the experts on this (some questioned why they did not send in miners) as the instability of the building is making it a hazard for any rescue teams.
I hope they find the person(s) that were the source of the tapping still alive.

So there we are, no ventilation would cause the buildup of mosture which would attract the fungi which would cause the rot. Hence, no such thing as dry rot, a euphemism in fact, for moist rot.
**********
No ventilation, humidity, moisture build up, lack of hygiene or maintenance, will ever attract anything. Those are only some of the conditions that will create the proper environment.
Your assumption is wrong.
Unfortunately, you can not find much information about how complex is the botanic science, twice as large as medicine.
Fungi multiply by spores, a very minuscule particle or structure that can move around earth two or three times (sort of) and if landing in the right environment, it will grow in less than six hours. Humidity and/or the existence of moisture in the environment will attract absolutely no fungi. By the contrary, if an spore lands in a proper environment, it will instantly start it's development. If there is no propensity in the environment, then will not be fungi.
It requires not only lack of air movement, but certain level of humidity, certain temperature and few other conundrum.
There is a theory, that cancer in itself is a sort of fungi, kept under control by the immune system and once the immune system fails for whatever reason (stress is one of them) that failure generate the proper condition for the spore to grow as we know it for cancer.
Of course, I know nothing about it, I'd only google it. And please, you stop changing the google page, I know it's you, because the words are always pointing towards the right side of my screen.

skipper dave 6/25/2012 5:02:27 PM ReportRW - I take exception to you lecturing Grump this morning on what the meaning of dry rot is. You clearly enjoyed copying and pasting from the net. If showing the rest of us how stupid we are gets your rocks off then so be it. I can tell you without ever having spoken to Grump that both of us understood what we meant by dry rot. The operative word is rot and nautical people still use the term DRYROT and always will. Someone poking their nose in to give us an encyclopedia version of white rot, brown rot or wet rot does nothing to enhance the discussion nor himself. I bet Grump has poked his fingers in more rotted wood than any plumber I know.

right wing 6/25/2012 6:39:20 PM ReportNow on to more important matters.
The rescue operation is over????
I get that you can't send crews into unsafe areas.
I have been listening to reports all day on CBC radio but have not heard, yet, that they are completely over.
The latest story by SooToday is suggesting they are worried about the entire building coming down.
Then it jumps to the responsibility of the demolition being the municipalities.
What about those still in there possibly alive?
Pretty dam confusing "news" story.
djjazz09 6/25/2012 6:45:18 PM ReportI am assuming that they want a demolition plan to remove the escalator and staircase so that rescue workers can work safely to bring those people who are still trapped to safety.
djjazz09 6/25/2012 6:53:12 PM ReportIf they put the rescue effort on hold then the chance of someone being alive would be slim, depending on the type of injuries.
right wing 6/25/2012 7:01:22 PM ReportThe OPP have confirmed the sound of breathing in the area of the escalator, the original area that tapping was heard.
Victims have been know to live over two weeks buried in rubble.

It will take at least a couple of months before a demolition order can be made.. and then the owners will contest it... and then the demo will have to go out to tender... it may well be a year or so before they can do the recovery of the persons trapped inside... watching the news, the old lady who asked why they did not accept the offer from mine rescue I do not know... Underground there is all sorts of problems and mostly if they have difficulty they use a form of cribbing to allow work to progress... guess these people from TO haven't heard of that stuff. To abandon someone is not what rescue is about...
jean-paul 6/25/2012 8:01:09 PM ReportRIGHT WING. Thank u blah blah blah like blah it blah.
Bobby Nerves 6/25/2012 8:12:04 PM ReportMallet, as I said in the beginning, everything goes by liability.
In these cases, the court will end spreading the liability in percentage points to different organism, professionals, and the owners. It's early to make a call, but human error is there, no doubt, but, as it is Northern Ontario, we have to wait for the results.
I don't know where your expertise is coming from, but should the Fire Marshal be in charge, and he decides a demolition, it'll be executed in no more than 48 hours. In this case, I believe it is Emergency Management Ontario that has its people working there and they are the ones making the calls.
Remember that at this point the building structure belongs to no one, but the Ministry, Ministry of Safety and Correctional Services, and if the person in charge (Emergency Management Ontario) decides that demolition is the way to go, no one can stop it and will be executed in matter of hours.
I've been there.

Nunavut 6/25/2012 8:44:47 PM ReportIf the Elliot Lake tragedy had occurred in the 1970's or 80's the emergency staff would of been allowed to be heros and risk life and limb to rescue people from the building , but here we are in 2012 when insurance risk and lawyers cause emergency staff to never be heroic in their efforts. The World trade centre still had a few heroic emergency crews in 2001 , but here in Ontario we have redtape. A sad day when we abandon the injured.
epc 6/25/2012 8:56:48 PM ReportSuch a tragedy in Elliot Lake on all sorts of levels.
My heart aches for those trapped waiting for help and for their families.
skipper dave 6/25/2012 9:16:19 PM ReportElliott Lake a tragedy yes but hold off on judging the rescue effort to be not the very best. No one puts the rescue team in harms way without ensuring a good chance of success, even mine rescue. For all we know this whole complex may be on the verge of collapsing and retrieving victims means removing fallen structure. These folks are professionals. Or the mess may have shifted and any sign of life may have ceased with a shift. Do you risk losing the team to bring out the deceased or do you bring in the heavy machinery. We are not there. I can't imagine anything but the very best effort from a team of dedicated men and women. Life and death situations like this don't need our "they should have". Thank god in Canada we have the good Samaritan law that frees these folks from the litigious morass that would befall them if it were happening in the land of the dollar bill.
Sam C 6/25/2012 9:32:35 PM ReportWell said, skipper.
The first rule of emergency response is to ensure the area is safe for the responders.
sweetc 6/25/2012 9:43:20 PM ReportI agree that the area has to be safe for the workers,,, but in this day and age they should have the technology to be able to get on with the search safely. To just throw in the towel after only 2 days does not say very much for us as Canadians. step back, regroup and ask for help if you don't know what to do but don't abandon the trapped people. sad day for sure.
mallet 6/25/2012 10:32:11 PM ReportSkipper Dave and Sam C.
Skip, ever hear of the RNLI? They go to sea when just looking at it can make good men puke...
Sam, Does the fire dept say, well lets put the fire out before we go look for people, if they think there are people inside?
In both cases these people risk life and limb to try and save survivors, even if they know there is not much chance. There are riggers and millwrights who can do things which some experts say are impossible, if given the go ahead. You shore up an area if it looks unsafe, you shore up a building if it looks like falling. I have fotos which my daughter had sent from some people in Elliot Lake, and I agree it looks a shamble, but YOU DO NOT ABANDON a search while there is a hope there are people inside, hurt, waiting for rescue. If the place falls down on it's own in the next week I will apologise to all concerned, but I don't think it will.
