Sault arts collective Ears and Eyes recently hosted its first show at 180 Projects on Gore Street featuring the talents of Gunner & Smith and Twin Voices with local opener Aldous (Nick Luck).

Well, sort of.

Normally a Saskatoon-based six-piece folk band, Geoff Smith was the sole representative of Gunner & Smith during this Sault Ste. Marie stop.

He was backed during his set by Laura Beach (pictured) of Twin Voices and Matt McLaughlin from Six Moons Later.

Returning the favour - following a few numbers during which she wove delicate loops of voice, violin and guitar - Beach was backed by Smith and McLaughlin.

The tour that saw the trio perform at 180 Projects is in support of new releases from both Gunner & Smith (He Once Was A Good Man) and Twin Voices (Sing To Me EP).

"[Performing solo] is something I do off and on so it's not that big of a stretch. It's how I write all the songs to begin with," Smith told us that evening.

While touring solo has certain advantages over traveling with a full band, it can be more difficult to connect with the audience and be noticed, he said, which why a performance hosted at a venue such as 180 Project can be an ideal stop.

The audience is there for one reason and one reason only - to listen to live music.

"[Touring] is one of those things that as an artist you need to put your time in. You can't just throw something out there and expect people to pick it up. You have to bring it to them," Smith said. "If the music is something fulfilling to me and is bringing enjoyment to other people, that means a lot to me."
