AlgomaTrad and the Township of St. Joseph events committee present First Annual Folk at the Landing Music Fest, August 21

The Algoma Traditional Music and Dance Group and the Township of St. Joseph Events Committee are presenting an evening festival of music on the new stage at the Centennial Grounds in Richards Landing on Friday, August 21, from 5 to 10 p.m.

Folk at the Landing Music Fest features nationally-recognized performers of Canadian traditional and folk music who will be in Richards Landing on St. Joseph Island as part of the AlgomaTrad Family Camp during the week leading up to the festival.

Cost to attend the festival will be $20, $10 for students 18 and under, and children under 7 free.

Tickets will be available at the gate and info can be obtained by calling the Township of St. Joseph Municipal Office.

Folk at the Landing Music Fest will feature concerts by Everything Fitz, a fantastic family group of Grand Master Canadian Champion fiddlers, step dancers and multi-instrumentalists from Bancroft, Ontario; The Brian Pickell Band, featuring the tunes and songs of internationally acclaimed composer Brian Pickelll; the AlgomaTrad Adhochestra, a musical collaboration of AlgomaTrad instructors who have been performing together at AlgomaTrad for several years; and local lights The O’Schraves, winners of the New Emerging Artist at liveireland.com and Chicago Irish American News Best New Group in 2014.

Folk at the Landing will commence with performances by student groups from the AlgomaTrad Family Camp followed by a Rivers Speak Pageant and Parade at 6 p.m.

Rivers Speak is a community arts work-in-progress by local community arts group Thinking Rock (thinkingrock.ca).

Thinking Rock is working on this three-year project with Blind River, Mississauga First Nation, Elliot Lake and Serpent River First Nation to develop a community play with and for the people of these places.

AlgomaTrad is providing musical mentorship for the Rivers Speak project with the support of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

Interested community members can be part of Thinking Rock at AlgomaTrad workshops during the week of the AlgomaTrad family camp.

More information can be obtained from the AlgomaTrad website and through the Township of St. Joseph Municipal Office.

Everything Fitz (everythingfitz.ca) is siblings Julie, Kerry and Tom Fitzgerald.

Julie is a multiple winner of the Canadian Grand Master Fiddle championship, Tom became the youngest winner of this highly-esteemed prize in 2012, and Kerry is a past Ontario Open Step Dance champ and a popular piano and step dance teacher at AlgomaTrad for several years.

Brian Pickell (brianpickell.com) is well-known in the region for his tune and song compositions and he and his band, including local musicians and AlgomaTrad founders Julie Schryer and Pat O’Gorman, have played several sold out shows on the Island over the years.

The O’Schraves (algomatrad.ca/the-o-schraves), the Schryer/O’Gorman/Lefebvre family, are well-known in the Algoma Region for their excellent concerts of songs and tunes from many Canadian musical traditions.

The AlgomaTrad Adhochestra is a collaboration of wonderful traditional songster Charlie Cares, the ever-amazing multi-instrumentalist James Stephens, the one-and-only, coolest double bassist and singer Joe Phillips (Pierre Schryer Band, London Symphony Orchestra), cellist, violist and all around awesome string chopper Lea Kirstein and O’Schrave cellist and guitarist and Hilton Beach luthier Zachary Schryer Levebvre.
