SAULT STE. MARIE, MI -- Award-winning writer Kim Addonizio, who has been called one of our nation’s most provocative and edgy poets, will be visiting Lake Superior State University on Thursday, October 2, to present a reading and master class, as well as a public reading and reception.

The public program will be held from 7-9 p.m. in the Walker Cisler Center’s Crow’s Nest.

The master class, which is open to any aspiring writers who are interested in learning more about poetry, will be held at 2 p.m. the same day in room 305 of Crawford Hall of Science.

Those who have reviewed Addonizio’s poetry have said her work is “known for its gritty, street-wise narrators and a wicked sense of wit.”

Her book, Lucifer at the Starlite, was a finalist for the Poets Prize and the Northern California Book Award, and her collection, Tell Me was a National Book Award Finalist.

Addonizio’s many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA Fellowships, and Pushcart Prizes for both poetry and essay.

Her other books include her novel-in-verse Jimmy and Rita, two novels from Simon and Schuster, Little Beauties and My Dreams Out in the Street, and the poet’s guide Ordinary Genius: A Guide for the Poet Within.

Her new story collection, The Palace of Illusions, was released in September and has already been chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of its top 10 fall literary fiction titles.

Addonizio offers private poetry workshops in Oakland, New York City, and online, and often incorporates her love of blues harmonica into her readings.

Her Sault Ste. Marie visit is part of the LSSU Visiting Writer Series, which is organized and sponsored by the LSSU English Department.

The series was created to bring highly-acclaimed literary authors and poets to the campus to raise awareness of LSSU’s expanding creative writing program and bring together the community and college in a shared literary experience.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience Addonizio reading her work, answering questions about her writing process, and signing copies of her books, which will be made available for purchase by the LSSU campus bookstore.

LSSU offers both an undergraduate major and minor concentration in creative writing.

The program is in keeping with LSSU’s small program offerings with enthusiastic faculty who encourage innovation and experimentation.

Students develop their writing voices as they complete coursework in prose, poetry, and performance writing, and they are given opportunities to get publishing experience before graduation.
