Two car shows cruise into St. Ignace, Michigan in June
ST. IGNACE, MI - June is all about cars in St. Ignace, Michigan, where automobile enthusiasts have flocked for decades, and this year is no exception.
Two major car shows transform the streets of this charming Upper Peninsula town every June at affordable events that are chock-full of classic cars.
Set against a backdrop that includes the mighty Mackinac Bridge, the brilliant blue waters of Lake Huron, and Mackinac Island, the St. Ignace community hosts Antiques on the Bay June 20-21, followed by the traditional St. Ignace Car Show Weekend, June 26-28.
As the name implies, Antiques on the Bay is focused on older cars.
This show features original/restored vehicles from 1989 and earlier.
It includes a Mackinac Bridge Rally on Friday evening - fun for participants and spectators alike.
Typically, Antiques on the Bay garners roughly 125 vintage cars and trucks, which will be on display Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the St. Ignace Marina park, Mackinac Grille, and Star Line Dock all on State Street.
Spectators can enjoy this family-friendly event free of charge.
This year’s event will give special feature to Fords from the 1955-1957 era.
With no limitations on the year or type of entry, the 39th annual St. Ignace Car Show attracts a larger number of exhibitors with a wider variety of vehicles.
More than 700 entries are on display during a typical year, including hot rods, custom vehicles, trucks, and more.
Since some are registered in advance and others at the start of the show, it is difficult to say how many will attend this year.
Spectators will have plenty to see and do this year - all with free admission.
This year’s guest of honour is Dana DeCoster, creator of Cruis’news – a publication launched in 1995 that is custom-made for the car buff, with information about swap meets, classic car events, and other car-specific content.
Attendees will get a chance to meet and hear from DeCoster about his car-obsessed youth and how it led to a media presence that includes print and online.
Another guest is sure to attract the interest of car lovers.
Al Oppenheiser was named the Vehicle Chief Engineer for the Chevrolet Camaro on November 1, 2007.
He is responsible for bringing the 5th Generation Chevrolet Camaro into production, in addition to the Pontiac G8.
He joined the Global Rear Wheel Drive team after spending four years as the director of concept and vehicle integration for the GM Performance Division.
In addition to these special guests, dozens of vendors will also participate in the show, selling all sorts of products and food items.
The event kicks off with Kewadin Casino Cruise Night on June 26, followed by the Down Memory Lane Parade on Friday, June 27, and a full day of car show activities in Downtown St. Ignace on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
