The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains invites you to celebrate the 94th Anniversary of the Group of Seven painting on the Algoma Central Railway and the 80th birthday of Glenn Gould, pianist extraordinaire and devotee of Lake Superior and the Algoma Highlands.

The Group of Seven and Glenn Gould Train Event, 2012

One-day train event

This event commences September 22nd and includes a scenic train ride from Sault Ste. Marie to Searchmont Resort, traveling through a spectacular heightened display of fall colours and Algoma Highlands.

At the resort, there is a presentation on our featured artist Tom Thomson, the man whose tragic death kept him from being the first member of the Group of Seven but whose art and passion made him central to the Group’s formation.

Following a hot lunch, participants can take part in one of several art workshops that will be occuring.

There is also the option of participating in a guided nature walk or some Geocaching through the beautiful woodlands surrounding the resort.

Musical entertainment follows the workshops.

Participants will return to Sault Ste. Marie by bus to overlook the beautiful coast of our great Lake Superior thus enjoying the encompassed beauty of the Algoma Region.

Ticket prices for this One-day train event are as follows:

$65 for the train from Sault Ste. Marie to Searchmont and bus ride back, and including the Tom Thomson presentation, workshop, lunch and musical entertainment.

$50 for own transportation to and from event; ticket includes the Tom Thomson presentation, workshop, lunch and musical entertainment.

Two-day train event

There is a second day option - the two-day train event - which builds on the one-day train event.

On the two-day train event, participants leave Searchmont Resort following the lunch and travel north by coach along Lake Superior’s magnificent eastern coastline to Wawa.

Stops are made on the ride north to visit lookouts and points of interest.

In the evening of the 22nd, participants enjoy a dinner presentation on Glenn Gould, and following, stay at the Wawa Motor Inn where Gould stayed during his sojourns into the North Country.

In the morning of the 23rd participants follow in Gould’s footsteps as they tour those haunts - the waterfalls and shorelines - frequented by the pianist.

At noon participants board the Sault Ste. Marie-bound train at Wawa’s Hawk Junction and travel south through the Algoma Highlands - Group of Seven country.

As they travel south, passing by sites where Group members painted some of their most important works, participants listen to a live commentary on the Group of Seven.

Ticket prices for the two-day train event are as follows:

$340 for double occupancy.

$383 for single occupancy.

For further information or how to register for the event, you may send an email to [email protected], or call 705-949-2301, ext. 4236 or ext. 4320.
