Showan, Milton (Bum)

Posted

(August 13, 1940 – September 15, 2014) - With dignity and grace, in his 75th year, after a short battle with cancer, Milton Showan passed away peacefully, with his family at his side. Loving husband of 53 years of Sally Showan of Spanish.  Dear Father of Todd (Cherie) of Thessalon, and Brooke Showan (Norm Grose) of Spanish.  Dear Father-Figure to Suzie Carlson (John) of Phelpston Ont. Best ever Grandad of Alexis Allen, of Thousand Oaks, California, William and Ty Showan of Thessalon, and Danielle Carlson of Phelpston, Ont.

Survived by his Brothers Gerry Showan (Brenda Robinson) and Ronny Showan, both of Thessalon, and his Sister Terry Showan (late Doug Phillips) of Sault Ste Marie. Predeceased by his parents Fred (Knobby) and Mary Showan,  his brother Ted Showan, all of Thessalon, and his In-Laws Bill and Elsie Smith, of Wharncliffe.  Dear Uncle of Marianne, Lisa and Pam Showan, of Thessalon and Sault Ste Marie, Christina Showan-McKerchie of Sault Ste Marie Michigan, Chance ( Chuck ) Showan and Mariah Showan, both of Sault Ste Marie.  Great Uncle to many more.  Born and raised in Thessalon, and a long time resident of Spanish, Milt was a proud member and elder of the Serpent River First Nation.  He was greatly respected by the people and communities he served, during and after his long career with the OPP, having retired from the Spanish OPP detachment in 1990.  He treated people well, always having a soft spot for those in need.  Milt was known for his power with a baseball bat, for being a true master at catching walleye and perch,  and his passion for all things hockey - travelling several nights a week in the winter to all points between Sudbury and the Soo to watch his grandson and take in Blind River Beaver games with his buddies.  He loved his old dogs, his old truck, his old boat, and he never met a perch he didn't like.  But what he truly loved and lived for were his marathon outings with his grandchildren Alexis, William, Ty and Danielle. Truck rides, frog hunts, fishing trips, movies and hockey talk will be memories forever cherished by the kids.  The Showan Family would like to thank Dr.'s Long and Wannan, and the nursing staff at St. Josephs Hospital in Elliot Lake for their excellent care and compassion over the past few difficult days.  Following cremation, a celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, 18 September 2014 6:30-9 pm, at Beggs Funeral Home, Thessalon, followed by a memorial service at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Thessalon, at 11 am on Friday, September 19, 2014.  In Lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army,  in Milt's memory, would be greatly appreciated.  www.beggsfh.com
