NIXON, John Donald QC

Posted

It is with sadness that the family of John Donald Nixon QC announces his passing at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice on the evening of November 12th, shortly after his 90th birthday.  Donald was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth (Senyk). He was the father of Tracy (Wendy), Jay (Karen) and George (Pia); and the grandfather of Jordan, Emily, Mae, Jac, Ben and Charlie. Donald was born on a West Korah farm to George and Isobel Nixon. He was the brother of the late Betty (late George Grant) and Peter (Dorothy). Donald began his education at the one-room Base Line school and continued on to Alex Muir, Sault Collegiate, Queen’s University and Osgoode Hall. He practiced law in Sault Ste. Marie for over 50 years, during which time he was named a Queen’s Counsel. He served as an officer in the Canadian Army during the Second World War. Donald will be remembered by his many clients and by those with whom he shared a story, a joke, a song, a work of art, a poem, a special memory, a theatre production, a gourmet meal or a glass of fine wine. Friends and family will particularly remember Donald’s love for that special place: his “Camp” on Calm Bay at Batchawana. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment of his ashes at West Korah Cemetery. A celebration of Donald’s life will be held next summer at Batchawana. The family acknowledges with appreciation the special care and support provided to Donald in recent years. In Donald’s memory, donations to ARCH will be appreciated.

Requiem
Robert Louis Stevenson

Under a wide and starry sky
Dig my grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you ‘grave for me:
Here he lies where he long’d to be:
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Rest well Donald.
